Ducks move up slightly in USA TODAY Coaches poll

With the win over Washington State, the Ducks moved up three spots to No. 15 in the latest USA TODAY Coaches poll.

As one would figure, the Oregon Ducks football team managed to climb in the USA TODAY Coaches poll after their 44-41 road victory over Washington State.

Oregon moved up three spots to No. 15 in the poll that came out Sunday morning.

USC moved up a spot to No. 6 after the Trojans’ 14-10 win in Corvallis over Oregon State. Utah also moved up a spot to No. 13 with its win over lowly Arizona State.

But it was Washington that took the biggest jump. The Huskies moved up six spots to No. 18. They are quickly becoming a team that no one saw coming. They are 4-0 with a trip to Tempe to take it to the Sun Devils next weekend.

Notre Dame tumbles out of latest USA Today AFCA Coaches Poll

It gets worse

The Irish didn’t draw it up like this and it reflected in the latest USA Today AFCA Coaches Poll. Everyone associated with Notre Dame would like to hit the restart button on the season, especially head coach Marcus Freeman. As Nick Shepkowski so eloquently up it, the honeymoon is over.

The Irish weren’t the only other team that would fall on what could be deemed “upset Saturday” in college football. Sixth ranked Texas A&M lost to unranked Appalachian State at home, No. 8 Baylor lost to No. 25 Baylor on the road, No. 20 Kentucky defeated No. 19 Florida in Gainesville, unranked Tennessee also went on the road and defeated No. 14 Pittsburgh, and No. 18 Wisconsin lost at home to unranked Washington State.

Find out below where each team is ranked after the chaotic second weekend of college football. (Last week’s ranking in parenthesis.)

USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll reflects Pac-12’s Week 1 struggles

Utah and Oregon took significant hits in this week’s USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll

Sorry, Buffs fans, no college football head coach is quite convinced that Colorado is a top-25 team just yet.

So at least for now, we’re going to be stuck analyzing the Pac-12 and the Buffs’ remaining nonconference opponents, Air Force and Minnesota.

The Pac-12’s three-loss Week 1 was rough. With Utah losing to Florida and Oregon getting pummeled at Georgia, the revamped USC Trojans could be the Pac-12’s best hope at reaching the College Football Playoff. In Tuesday’s release of the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll, USC’s Week 1 victory over Rice propelled the Trojans three spots up to No. 12, while Utah dropped seven to No. 15 and Oregon slid 12 spots to No. 24.

Besides those three, UCLA, which comes to Boulder for Week 4, received six votes. Oregon State also snuck in with three votes. I wasn’t totally impressed with the Bruins’ 45-17 win over Bowling Green (UCLA fell behind 10-7 after one quarter), but Dorian Thompson-Robinson and Zach Charbonnet are going to be fun.

But within the Buffs’ more immediate concern, Air Force had 18 votes and Minnesota was given five. Chances are we’ll see at least Air Force inside the top-25 sometime this season.

Notre Dame falls but how far in lastest USA TODAY AFCA Coaches Poll

It could have been worse

It was a hard fought loss for the Irish on Saturday evening and although they did not come out on top against Ohio State in prime time and it reflected like that in the lastest USA TODAY AFCA Coaches Poll. As Marcus Freeman put it in his postgame press conference, “we’re not in it for moral victories, man.” Being tough on yourself and your team will get Notre Dame far, but as he also said, “we didn’t finish.”

Around the rest of the college football world, No. 1 Alabama and No. 3 Georgia (over No. 12 Oregon, wow) cruised, No. 8 Utah was upset by Florida, while No. 13 NC State narrowly escape the upset bid by East Carolina. In the other top-25 matchup, No. 23 Arkansas “upset” No. 22 Cincinnati at home.

Find out below where each team ranked in today’s latest Coaches Poll with their previous ranking in parenthesis.

#25 – BYU (NR)

#24 – Oregon (12)

#23 – Ole Miss (24)

#22 – Texas (18)

#21 – Wake Forest (19)

#20 – Kentucky (21)

#19 – Florida (NR)

#18 – Wisconsin (20)

#17 – Arkansas (23)

#16 – Miami, FL (17)

#15 – Utah (8)

#14 – Pittsburgh (16)

#13 – NC State (13)

#12 – USC (15)

#11 -Michigan State (14)

USC rises to No. 12 in USA TODAY Coaches Poll

Here is the full USA TODAY AFCA Coaches Poll. The #Pac12 took a hit, but #USC did not. The Trojans are the highest-ranked team in the conference.

The USC Trojans are No. 12 in the latest USA TODAY AFCA Coaches Poll.

USC defeated Rice, 66-14, on Saturday afternoon in the Los Angeles Coliseum in the first game of the Lincoln Riley era at the school.

USC’s offense dazzled, and its defense — especially up front — leaves a lot to be desired. The Trojans have a ton of work to do on that side of the ball. Alex Grinch has his work cut out for him. The hope is that the defense can do a tolerably sufficient job — nothing spectacular, but a lot better than the rock-bottom standard of last season — in September to keep the team afloat. Giving Caleb Williams a chance to win games in the fourth quarter is what the defense must do, at minimum, in the first month of the season.

Across the country, we saw a lot of significant developments in Week 1.

Oregon got demolished by Georgia and nearly fell out of this poll, but the Ducks managed to stay in at No. 24. The Ducks will not make the College Football Playoff.

Utah lost at Florida and fell behind USC in the rankings. The Utes have to run the table to have a shot at the playoff.

It was a brutal week for the Pac-12, and USC might already have the best odds of making the playoff from the conference.

Here is the full poll, starting with No. 1 and going down to No. 25:

USC football opens at No. 15 in USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

The preseason USA TODAY AFCA Coaches Poll is out. #USC is ranked behind Utah and Oregon. See where all the top teams landed in the first poll of the new season.

The USC Trojans were ranked No. 15 in the preseason edition of the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.

Some might view that as a surprise, others might view it as expected. Some might find the ranking too high, others too low.

What matters is that USC has to earn its place in college football. It won’t be handed to the Trojans on a silver platter. The Trojans need to take what’s out there. No one will roll out the red carpet for them and make this easy. It’s not supposed to be easy.

Notably, Utah and Oregon were ranked ahead of USC. The coaches think the Trojans won’t make the Pac-12 Championship Game this December in Las Vegas.

The coaches poll mirrors the Pac-12 media vote, which also had USC third behind Utah and Oregon.

Motivation? There should be no shortage of it for USC in 2022.

Here is the full poll:

  1. Alabama
  2. Ohio State
  3. Georgia
  4. Clemson
  5. Notre Dame
  6. Michigan
  7. Texas A&M
  8. Utah

Oregon just misses the Top 10 in first 2022 USA TODAY coaches poll

Oregon will begin the 2022 season as a top-15 team in the country, according to the first USA TODAY AFCA coaches poll.

The 2022 college football season is around the corner and the first USA TODAY AFCA coaches poll has been tabulated and published with the Ducks just missing the Top 10.

Oregon is ranked No. 12 in the poll with Utah being the highest ranked Pac-12 team at No. 8. But perhaps more importantly is that the Ducks’ first opponent and the defending national champions, Georgia Bulldogs, comes in at No. 3.

USC, who finished the 2021 season unranked, has reshaped its entire program with a new coach in Lincoln Riley and a bunch of new transfers. Those efforts were clearly noticed as the Trojans will be the No. 15 team in the country when the season begins.

In other noteworthy news with the poll, Mario Cristobal’s Miami team is No. 17, and BYU, who comes to Autzen Stadium in Week 3, just missed the Top 25. Besides the big three of the Pac-12, no other conference team was able to crack the poll.

Arkansas a Top 25 Team in Final AP Poll

The Hogs landed at #21 in the final AP poll, the last of five ranked teams from the SEC.

Sam Pittman’s second year as Arkansas head coach was an unmitigated success. Wins over Texas, LSU, and Penn State highlight a season to remember that ended with the Hogs as a ranked team in both major polls. This hasn’t happened for Arkansas since 2011.

The Hogs landed at #21 in the final AP poll, the last of five ranked teams from the SEC.

The USA Today AFCA Coaches Poll comes out later today.

Where do Colorado’s 2022 opponents stand in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll?

Five of Colorado’s 2022 opponents were featured in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll

Who says it’s too early to start thinking about the 2022 season? Just 271 days from now, the TCU Horned Frogs will make their way into Folsom Field on Sept. 3 for the season opener.

If the current state of the transfer portal is any indication, college rosters are likely going to look drastically different than they do here in December. Regardless, the final USA TODAY AFCA Coaches Poll until the conclusion of the CFP was released on Sunday, and a number of Colorado’s 2022 opponents were featured.

The newly-crowned Pac-12 champion Utah was ranked the highest at No. 10 in the poll. That number could change, however, following their date with Ohio State in the Rose Bowl. Colorado will host Utah next season.

Oregon, which Colorado also welcomes to Boulder in 2022, dropped five spots to No. 15. With Mario Cristobal house hunting in Miami and Lincoln Riley doing the same in Los Angeles, the Ducks and Oklahoma Sooners will meet in the Alamo Bowl.

Three other 2022 CU opponents missed the top-25 but received votes in the poll. We all sadly remember Minnesota silencing the Buffs’ offense this season and these programs will meet again in Minneapolis on Sept. 17. The Gophers finished their regular season 8-4 and received 17 points in the poll. They’ll see West Virginia in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl.

The 9-3 Air Force Falcons, another nonconference opponent that recently upset the Buffs at home, snagged 15 votes and will face Louisville in the First Responder Bowl to wrap up this season. While it could end in another loss, I’m looking forward to the Buffs playing at Air Force in Colorado Springs on Sept. 10.

Finally, the UCLA Bruins received three votes in the poll after winning their final three games of the regular season. Chip Kelly’s squad will face North Carolina State in the Holiday Bowl before coming to Boulder in 2022.
