LSU 2023 undrafted free agents tracker

Six Tigers were selected over the weekend, but draft day isn’t the end of the story.

It wasn’t quite as eventful a draft weekend as LSU fans have grown accustomed to in recent years. Still, after the 2023 NFL draft was all said and done on Saturday, six former Tigers heard their names called as they were selected to join the professional ranks.

But as you likely know, draft day isn’t the end of the story. Once the fanfare is over, players who weren’t selected are eligible to sign with whomever they choose. Many of these players go on to have long and successful careers.

Twenty-two of them have gone on to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Whether any of this year’s crop will achieve that status remains to be seen, but following the draft, several former LSU players reached deals as undrafted free agents. Here, we’ll keep you updated on every UDFA deal former Tigers reached.

The 10 best undrafted free agents after the 2023 NFL Draft

Between Andre Carter, Lonnie Phelps, Jalen Redmond and Isaiah Land there’s no shortage of pocket-crumpling defenders on the open market.

Every year, there are more undrafted free agents than first round picks on NFL rosters.

Of course, that’s just a matter of sample sizes. There are only 32 Day 1 picks each year — 31 in 2023, thanks to the Miami Dolphins’ shenanigans. There are more than 1,000 undrafted free agents who’ll get calls from teams, contract offers and training camp invitations

Still, several players have gone all seven rounds without hearing their names called just to thrive in the pros. Tony Romo slid under the radar at Eastern Illinois to become a Pro Bowler with the Dallas Cowboys. Kurt Warner went unselected, ground his way through the Arena Football League, then became a two-time MVP and Hall of Famer. Six-time Pro Bowl center and 1-7 NFL head coach Jeff Saturday counts himself among the undrafted free agent success stories.

2023 will produce its share of starters and future stars. We’re not sure who that’ll be just yet, but if we had to place a bet these are the 10 players we’d back.

Tracking every reported undrafted free agent signing for Seahawks

Here’s where we will be tracking reports of undrafted free agents signing with the Seahawks.

For the Seattle Seahawks, the three-day grind of the 2023 NFL draft has finally come to an end. Now comes the hard part. Seattle still has more than two dozen roster spots to fill and very little cash on hand to get it done. That means they will have to be as aggressive as ever on the undrafted free agent market.

Here’s where we will be tracking reports of undrafted free agents signing with the Seahawks.

Tracking the Chargers’ 2023 undrafted free agent signings

Keep up with who the Los Angeles Chargers sign from the undrafted free agency pool.

The 2023 NFL draft has wrapped up, and teams will now begin filling their 90-man offseason rosters. After selecting seven players in the draft, the Chargers will now turn their attention to signing undrafted free agents.

While there’s no guarantee that any of this year’s UDFAs will turn into big contributors, Los Angeles has had an excellent track record of finding hidden gems throughout the years.

We’re going to be tracking all of the team’s college free-agent signings here. So please refresh this page because the list of players will be updated every time we learn of a new signing.

Here is a list of the UDFA’s Los Angeles has signed thus far:

Saints among NFL’s biggest spenders in signing 2022 undrafted free agents

The Saints were among the NFL’s biggest spenders in signing undrafted free agents last year, but will that trend continue after the 2023 draft?

This is interesting. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero shared a report from the NFL Players Association breaking down each team’s spending on undrafted free agents from the 2022 rookie class — and few teams spent as heavily to recruit undrafted talent as the New Orleans Saints.

In total, the Saints guaranteed a whopping $1,242,000 to the rookies they signed after the 2022 draft. That’s double the average spending by team ($600,551), ranking third-most behind the Philadelphia Eagles ($1,882,000) and Dallas Cowboys ($1,842,500). Teams are limited by how much they can guarantee to undrafted players, and the Saints came close to maxing out their rookie pool.

So where did that money go? The Saints guaranteed $222,000 to former Weber State wide receiver Rashid Shaheed, one of the highest totals for an undrafted player around the league (despite him recovering from a torn ACL at the time). They signed 19 undrafted rookies to an average guaranteed signing bonus of $9,294, so Shaheed was someone they valued very highly. If he had been healthy they may have drafted him in the sixth round instead of Air Force defensive tackle Jordan Jackson, who spent his rookie year on the practice squad before jumping ship for the Denver Broncos; but that worked out better for Shaheed because only $176,688 of Jackson’s contract was guaranteed, because of his draft slot. Shaheed signing an undrafted rookie deal actually allowed him to get more money in guarantees.

But only two of those undrafted players made the roster, in Shaheed and backup offensive lineman Lewis Kidd. Eight others earned spots on the initial practice squad. Only the Indianapolis Colts (4 on the roster, 7 on the practice squad) and Jacksonville Jaguars (3 on the roster, 9 on the practice squad) had more first-year players make the team.

On one hand, that’s impressive, but on the other hand it goes to show how serious the depth issues have gotten in New Orleans that so many undrafted players were in the mix. The COVID-19 pandemic-fueled salary cap crunch hit them harder than most teams.

Still, the Saints have a history of finding value among the players who aren’t fortunate enough to hear their name called on draft day. They aren’t afraid to spend big to bring in players who they believe in. We’ll see who joins the list in 2023.

Best New Orleans Saints undrafted free agent signings since 2006

We’re recapping the best New Orleans Saints undrafted free agent signings since 2006, from Pierre Thomas to Rashid Shaheed and everyone in-between:

The New Orleans Saints have a proud history of finding diamonds in the rough during undrafted free agency, signing rookies who weren’t fortunate to be picked during the selection event. It’s something that they’ve always valued with Mickey Loomis as general manager, but which really took off as a point of emphasis once Sean Payton took over as head coach. With the next wave of undrafted rookies looking to make their mark, it’s a great time to look back on the players who came before them.

We’re only counting players who signed with the Saints as rookie free agents — so guys like Delvin Breaux (who played in Canada) and Lance Moore (who started out in NFL Europe) were not included, even if they’re similar success stories who did not hear their names called from the stage on draft day. That’s also the case for former undrafted free agents like Chase Daniel and Brian De La Puente who landed in New Orleans after getting their pro starts elsewhere around the league.
