ULM vs Appalachian State Game Preview

Why ULM Will Win

Where did this come from?

In one of the best stories of the 2021 season, ULM went from nothing to being in the mix for a bowl game by winning four of its last six games.

How?

Eliminating mistakes has meant everything. The team doesn’t beat itself – there aren’t a lot of penalties or turnovers, and that’s combining with an offense that’s ramping things up as the season has gone on.

The Warhawk O has produced progressively more over the last four games, highlighted by a shocking upset over Liberty and a 555-yard day against South Alabama.

Freshman QB Chandler Rogers stepped in and has been amazing, throwing eight touchdown passes and just one pick over the last three games. For all of the great things Appalachian State has done, it’s allowed 200 passing yards or more in every game, but …

Why Appalachian State Will Win

The ULM run defense is about to be hammered.

The team has been sharp enough and good enough to overcome a slew of problems, but Coastal Carolina, Georgia State, and Liberty all ran well on the Warhawk D, combining for over 850 yards and ten touchdowns over a three week span before the South Alabama game.

Appalachian State won’t do anything crazy here. Hand the ball off, hand it off again, and get out of the way. The team is 5-0 when running for 160 yards or more.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Can Appalachian State keep the turnovers to a minimum?

ULM isn’t going to screw up – it’s +8 in turnover margin on the year and +4 over the last two games – and Appalachian State has turned it over 13 times and is a -5 over the last two games.

It’s going to be a good fight with a whole lot of offense, but Appalachian State will keep the production going from the win over Coastal Carolina to continue to push for a spot in the Sun Belt Championship.

South Alabama vs ULM Game Preview

Why South Alabama Will Win

Don’t turn the ball over.

ULM was able to get by Troy several weeks ago with just one takeaway, but how did it pull off one of the biggest shockers of the 2021 season against Liberty? Three takeaways, all picks.

The ULM offense is okay, but it’s not anything to worry too much about.

The team is awful at third downs on both sides of the ball, the O line gives up way too many plays in the backfield, and …

South Alabama’s defense is brilliant on third downs and defensive front comes up with a whole lot of plays in the backfield.

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why ULM Will Win

So besides picking off Liberty QB Malik Willis, what else is ULM doing that’s able to get it to a stunning 3-3?

It really is about the turnover margin. It’s not good enough to overcome a slew of mistakes, and it doesn’t screw up enough to matter.

The offense takes advantage of almost every opportunity, the defense does a lot of bending without breaking – sometimes; there were problems against Coastal Carolina and Georgia State – and …

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

South Alabama should be able to do what Liberty didn’t.

The Jaguar passing game won’t make the big mistakes, the yards will be there throughout, and the ULM offense won’t be able to keep up unless it’s +3 in turnover margin – which it won’t be.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Liberty vs ULM Game Preview

Why Liberty Will Win

The Flames got back on track in a hurry.

They lost the weeknight game to Syracuse, and that only seemed to anger them with blowout wins over UAB and Middle Tennessee to follow.

The offense has been terrifically balanced – well over 200 rushing yards and 200 passing, with 331 against UAB – the explosion is there, and the defense is cleaning up everything else by getting off the field in a hurry.

ULM’s offense is a work in progress.

It was able to throw a bit in the blowout loss to Georgia State, and it ran a little in the win over Troy, but it’s dead last in the nation overall averaging just 239 yards per game.

Liberty isn’t the team to play when you’re trying to get things going.

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why ULM Will Win

The Warhawks are doing a slew of the little things right.

Penalties are a massive problem for Liberty, but ULM is only getting hit for around five a game.

The Warhawk O – for all of its issues – is at least putting points on the board when it gets the chance, and there aren’t a lot of turnovers and mistakes with just four giveaways.

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

ULM just doesn’t move the ball well enough.

It doesn’t have any offensive explosion, and the defense is about to have a long day with the Liberty backfield that should be able to roam free. Get ready for a monstrous disparity in third down conversions.

ULM Warhawks College Football Preview 2021: Offense

You could see it coming. The ULM offense lost star QB Caleb Evans, it was a total rebuild, and the O really, really didn’t work. Enter new head coach Terry Bowden and offensive coordinator Rich Rodriguez to make it all go again … with a TON of help coming from the transfer portal.

Don’t get comfortable with any sort of depth chart – it’s all a work in progress as the coaching staff keeps looking for more help and more talent.

No position in more in flux than quarterback. 6-4, 245-pound Colby Suits led the team in passing last year, but he’s not much of a runner. He was in the transfer portal, but he appears to be staying for now. 6-3, 230-pound Jeremy Hunt is another big passing option, but Arizona transfer – and Rich’s son – Rhett Rodriguez is the best fit for the gig. Dad wants the quarterbacks to be mobile.

Leading rusher Josh Johnson is gone, but 210-pound freshman Kadyn Roach is back after finishing second on the team with just 112 yards and a score. This is a work in progress – it’s not a deep group.

Four of the five starting offensive linemen are back. They have good size  and there’s experience and versatility to play around with, but the group has to be far better for the running game and has to be far, far better in pass protection.

The loss of tight end and leading receiver Josh Pederson to the NFL hurts, but the offense has a good playmaking receiver in Perry Carter – he just needs the ball more. The top five wide receivers are back, and more are on the way through the transfer portal.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: ULM Warhawks Offense 3 Things To Know

The Warhawk offense has to somehow go on without Caleb Evans. The longtime star quarterback is finally done, and now it’s going to take some work to come up with the right guy who can make the attack that averaged 461 yards – second-best in the Sun Belt – and 32 points per game,

[jwplayer DWq0llPr]

Sophomore Colby Suits will get the first look after being Evans’ backup. He’s a 6-3, 242-pound passer who can move a bit, However, he’s going to have to hold off JUCO transfer Jeremy Hunt, a 6-3, 215-pound dual-threat option who fits the offense perfectly.

Leading receiver Markis McCray is done, but Josh Pederson is a fantastic tight end who caught a team-high nine touchdown passes on his 43 grabs as a go-to target and safety valve

The receiving corps is full of field stretchers options. It’s a deep, loaded group even without McCray with junior Perry Carter ready to take on a bigger role in his spot.

The quarterback might have to be a big part of the rushing element – Evans was second on the team in rushing and led the way with 12 scores – but it all works around senior Josh Johnson, a tough 215-pound veteran who averaged well over six yards per carry with 1,298 yards and 11 scores.

The offensive line that was so strong in pass protection – Evans had a lot to do with that – but had problems keeping defenses out of the backfield against the run has to all but start over. Senior Samuel Williams is back at one tackle, and everyone else has to be replaced.
