UFC on ESPN 55 winner Don’Tale Mayes wants quick return on hometown Louisville card

Don’Tale Mayes campaigned for a quick turnaround to fight in Louisville after his UFC on ESPN 55 victory.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Don’Tale Mayes[/autotag] has a plan in place after getting his hand raised Saturday at UFC on ESPN 55.

Mayes (11-6 MMA, 4-4 UFC) got back in the win column in the heavyweight division with a unanimous decision victory over Caio Machado (8-3-1 MMA, 0-2 UFC) at the UFC Apex, scoring a critical first-round knockdown that tipped the scorecards in his favor.

Although he’s frustrated he couldn’t finish the job early, Mayes knows it was important to emerge victorious after a lethargic performance in defeat against Rodrigo Nascimento in November.

“I feel some type of way when I don’t get the finish, but it could be worse,” Mayes told MMA Junkie and other reporters post-fight at UFC on ESPN 55. “I’m still happy getting the win. Getting the win feels good. He was a lot more durable than I thought, really.”

Mayes, 32, admits he has “a few scratches” after a 15-minute fight with Machado, but it’s not enough to stop him from calling for a quick return to competition.

UFC is hosting an event in Mayes’ hometown of Louisville, Ky., on June 8, and he badly wants a spot on that card.

“I’m hoping I can get on that UFC Louisville – that’s the hometown,” Mayes said. “I haven’t fought there since my pro debut and I’m hoping I can get on that. It’s probably six or seven weeks.

“(I’ll fight) whoever. Give me No. 15, give me No. 14, No. 13 – No. 10. I just want someone that can help pack the house.”

GLORY Kickboxing vet Jhonata Diniz ready for ‘big names’ at heavyweight after UFC on ESPN 55 win

It was former Glory kickboxer vs. former NFL player, and Jhonata Diniz reigned supreme – but he’s not getting ahead of himself.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Jhonata Diniz[/autotag] broke through Saturday at the UFC Apex, but is taking things step by step.

As he sat onstage for his UFC on ESPN 55 post-fight news conference, Diniz (7-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) glowed with a huge smile. He broke out his always-improving English to explain the moment of his first UFC victory.

“I feel great today,” Diniz told MMA Junkie and other reporters. “It’s the most special day of my life in my kickboxing and MMA career. I really, really am happy today. … We already knew he was trying to put me down, to work his grappling. But we trained a lot to defend him. I was sure that when we stayed up, I would knock him out.”

Diniz, 32, is a former GLORY Kickboxing combatant who transitioned into MMA in 2022. He earned a contract on Dana White’s Contender Series in 2022 and picked up his first UFC win Saturday with a knockout of former NFL player Austen Lane (12-5 MMA, 0-2 UFC).

While he’s maintained a 100 percent knockout/TKO rate through seven professional outings, Diniz won’t let the statistics go to his head. He recognizes the difference between short-term and long-term goals.

“Of course, I want to fight with the big names,” Diniz said. “Why not? If I want to be the champion, I have to beat the best guys. Who is the best? Just bring the name. I don’t care against who (I fight). … I don’t think about (title fights) because I think it will all come at the right time for me. If the UFC says, ‘OK, you’re ready to fight for the title,’ I will be ready for this one. I have to trust them. I’m just an employee. If they say I’m ready, I will do this one. I don’t care about that.”

Mick Maynard’s Shoes: What’s next for Alex Perez after UFC on ESPN 55 upset win?

Alex Perez put himself back in the flyweight championship mix with a thrilling knockout of Matheus Nicolau in the UFC on ESPN 55 headliner.

Uros Medic knows Ian Machado Garry won’t fight him but in his ‘humble opinion,’ would knock him out

Uros Medic explains why he doesn’t think Ian Machado Garry is worthy of the hype after his UFC on ESPN 55 knockout of Tim Means.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Uros Medic[/autotag] sees some winnable fights for himself in the UFC welterweight rankings.

After scoring a first-round knockout of veteran Tim Means on the main card of Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 55 at the UFC Apex, Medic (10-2 MMA, 4-2 UFC) has now won two of three fights since moving up to the welterweight division from lightweight.

Medic is wise enough to realize he’s unlikely to land a fight against a ranked name next, but when he looks at the current top 15, he sees a number of favorable matchups – especially with undefeated [autotag]Ian Machado Garry[/autotag] (14-0 MMA, 7-0 UFC).

“I’ve seen a lot of guys that I don’t find them as a big threat, mainly Ian Garry,” Medic told MMA Junkie and other reporters post-fight at UFC on ESPN 55. “He’s a big name and he won’t fight me exactly yet. But I would look at some of his fights and think, ‘How is this guy ahead of me in the rankings.’ In my humble opinion I would knock him out.

“He’s an interesting personality online. I don’t know him personally. Maybe he’s not a bad guy. He’s definitely a target for bullying.”

If it’s not Garry or a similar ranked name, Medic, 31, will continue to push forward in his career and try to deliver performances that prove worthy of that opportunity.

He understands the 170-pound division is among the toughest in the UFC, but he’s ready to put his best foot forward and either thrive on fail, which was his mindset stepping into the octagon with a much more experienced foe in Means.

“I feel bad for the other guy a little bit,” Medic said. “But this is what we signed up for and this is part of the gig. We’ve all been on that side and we’ve all been on this side as well. We’ve all done the walk of shame and the walk of fame. So I’m happy that tonight is the walk of fame for me.”

Alex Perez content UFC on ESPN 55 served as reminder: ‘Honestly, I haven’t changed’

Former UFC title challenger Alex Perez won his first fight since 2020 on Saturday as he knocked out Matheus Nicolau.

LAS VEGAS – It may have looked foreign to some fans, and [autotag]Alex Perez[/autotag] doesn’t take offense to that.

Perez (25-8 MMA, 7-4 UFC) not only competed in a fight Saturday at UFC on ESPN 55, he won. That’s something fight fans don’t see every day and Perez recognizes that. He’s heard the jests, insults, and complaints.

Just like many commenters and critics wanted him to do, Perez was eager to fight. Due to injuries and other circumstances, that didn’t happen. But Saturday, it did. Perez knocked out fellow contender Matheus Nicolau with a clean right hook in Round 1.

The win may have signified a point-proving moment to outside observers, but not Perez, who never lost faith in his abilities despite his inactivity.

“I mean, honestly, I haven’t changed,” Perez told MMA Junkie and other reporters at a post-fight news conference. “A lot of it is just mental things. Don’t get me wrong. When the fights started canceling and stuff like that, I feel like, ‘Damn, dawg. What’s going on?’ I kind of felt sad and stuff like that. But at the end of the day, I can tell people just because something is going bad in your life, doesn’t mean life stops. I have a son. I have bills to pay and stuff like that. I’ve got to keep grinding. My boy Billy Bigelow be like, ‘Stuff those feelings away, deep down inside until it’s time to come out. I just kind of kept moving forward and listened to my team. I owe a lot to my manager, Jason House, Jeremy Luchau, Lance (Spaude), and coach Collin Oyama. …

“All these guys who stuck with me and told me, ‘Hey, you’re one of the best in the world.’ I spar with these guys nonstop and I can hang with these guys. I take Ricky down all the time, just gonna put this one out there. I hang with these guys all the time. Confidence? Yes, I still have it, right? It’s just showing the world I still have it and I think I showed that tonight.”

Perez, 32, said his lack of knockout power has become a friendly target that those close to him joke about. After Saturday’s performance, perhaps those wisecracks can be retired.

“Honestly, because all my friends always call me ‘Pillow Hands’. Now they can’t call me that no more,” Perez said. “My buddy was calling me ‘ASP,’ Alex ‘Sleeping Pill’ Perez. Not because I was putting people to sleep. But because I was putting him to sleep every time he would commentate my fights because I’d just take the guy down. It just shows that I’m evolving. Obviously, the footwork was a little different. I have some stuff that I’ve been working on that I haven’t been able to show. … But it showed off tonight. We’re going to keep working and going from there.”

[lawrence-related id=2737135,2737131]

The flyweight division’s future top-tier matchups are largely unmapped beyond the promotion’s May 4 title fight between champion Alexandre Pantoja and rising contender Steve Erceg.

While other fighters may have called for a big contender fight or title shot, Perez, as he did during his skid of misfortune, elected to leave the decision-making up to those who are employed to make those calls.

In the meantime, Perez will resume his position as “Dad.”

“Honestly, I’m not a matchmaker,” Perez said. “I’m a fighter. So whatever my management team and all those guys want to do, I’m down for. The biggest thing right now is that I’m going to go hang out with my son. I’ve been away from him. Before the last fight, I was away. Some stuff happened, so I wasn’t around him for pretty much the whole camp. I saw him fight week, and then obviously I stayed here to help with Cody Garbrandt and help Cynthia (Calvillo) for their fights, so I didn’t get to see them too much.

“So right now, all I’m worried about and focused on is going to see my son and hanging out with him and having him freak out seeing me on TV, seeing me in real life coming back and forth. We’ll enjoy some ice cream and pizza.”

In defeat, Nicolau falls into a skid for the first time under the UFC banner. He was finished with strikes in his previous outing, a first-round loss to Brandon Royval.
