UFC on ESPN 51: How to watch Vicente Luque vs. Rafael dos Anjos, start time, fight card, odds

Here’s what you need to know to watch UFC on ESPN 51 in Las Vegas with Vicente Luque vs. Rafael dos Anjos and Hakeem Dawodu vs. Cub Swanson.

The UFC is back in its home base in Las Vegas on Saturday with UFC on ESPN 51 at the UFC Apex. A former champion is at the top of the lineup.

Here’s how to watch UFC on ESPN 51 with welterweights in the main event.

Terrance McKinney steps in on short notice at UFC on ESPN 51 vs. Mike Breeden

At UFC on ESPN 51, Terrance McKinney will look to snap a two-fight skid against Mike Breeden in a lightweight bout.

[autotag]Terrance McKinney[/autotag] raised his hand – and he’s been called upon.

With [autotag]Lando Vannata[/autotag] out of UFC on ESPN 51 due to injury, McKinney (13-6 MMA, 3-3 UFC) steps in to fight Mike Breeden (10-5 MMA, 0-2 UFC) on Aug. 12 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, his manager, Oren Hodak, of KO Reps, told MMA Junkie on Thursday.

An additional person with knowledge of the matchup confirmed the booking to MMA Junkie but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

McKinney, 28, looks to snap a two-fight losing skid. After a 2-0 start to his UFC tenure, McKinney has dropped three of four. He most recently competed July 15 when he was submitted by Nazim Sadykhov. Win or lose as a pro, McKinney has never gone the distance.

Breeden, 34, also finds himself on a two-fight skid entering the bout. Since his UFC signing in 2021, Breeden has only competed twice. He was finished by Alexander Hernandez in his October 2021 promotional debut before a unanimous decision loss to Natan Levy in April 2022.

With the addition, the UFC on ESPN 51 lineup includes:

  • Rafael dos Anjos vs. Vicente Luque
  • Chris Daukaus vs. Khalil Rountree
  • Mike Breeden vs. Terrance McKinney
  • Hakeem Dawodu vs. Cub Swanson
  • Martin Buday vs. Josh Parisian
  • Iasmin Lucindo vs. Polyana Viana
  • JP Buys vs. Marcus McGhee
  • Isaac Dulgarian vs. Francis Marshall
  • Jaqueline Amorim vs. Montserrat Ruiz
  • Juliana Miller vs. Luana Santos
  • Josh Fremd vs. Jamie Pickett
  • AJ Dobson vs. Tafon Nchukwi
  • Da’Mon Blackshear vs. TBA

Lando Vannata off UFC on ESPN 51 due to injury

Lando Vannata vs. Mike Breeden is off UFC on ESPN 51 and its unclear what the promotion’s plans are at this time.

[autotag]Lando Vannata[/autotag] is off UFC on ESPN 51.

Expected to fight [autotag]Mike Breeden[/autotag] on Aug. 12 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Vannata (12-7-2 MMA, 4-7-2 UFC) recently withdrew from the lightweight bout due to an undisclosed injury. It’s unclear if Breeden (10-5 MMA, 0-2 UFC) will remain on the card.

Two people with knowledge of the situation recently informed MMA Junkie of the withdrawal but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

Vannata, 31, would’ve looked to snap a two-fight skid with losses to Charles Jourdain and Daniel Zellhuber in that stretch. Breeden, 34, is also on a two-fight losing skid, consisting of losses to Alexander Hernandez and Natan Levy.

With the change, the UFC on ESPN 51 lineup includes:

  • Rafael dos Anjos vs. Vicente Luque
  • Chris Daukaus vs. Khalil Rountree
  • Mike Breeden vs. TBA
  • Hakeem Dawodu vs. Cub Swanson
  • Martin Buday vs. Josh Parisian
  • Iasmin Lucindo vs. Polyana Viana
  • JP Buys vs. Marcus McGhee
  • Isaac Dulgarian vs. Francis Marshall
  • Jaqueline Amorim vs. Montserrat Ruiz
  • Juliana Miller vs. Luana Santos
  • Josh Fremd vs. Jamie Pickett
  • AJ Dobson vs. Tafon Nchukwi
  • Da’Mon Blackshear vs. Brady Hiestand

Vicente Luque medically cleared for UFC on ESPN 51 after brain hemorrhage in 2022

While it was not previously publicized, UFC welterweight Vicente Luque suffered a brain bleed in 2022 that put his career on hold for a year.

[autotag]Vicente Luque[/autotag] has been cleared to fight in his upcoming UFC main event after a special hearing during by the Nevada Athletic Commission.

Fighter licensing and re-licensing applications are typically approved in waves, as was the case for 72 other fighters during Tuesday’s monthly meeting. Luque, however, was singled out and needed special approval due to what the commission revealed was a brain hemorrhage stemming from his August 2022 TKO loss to Geoff Neal.

While the bout was not specifically mentioned as the cause of the brain bleed during the meeting, NAC executive director Jeff Mullen later confirmed that detail to MMA Junkie.

The NAC unanimously approved Luque, 31, to compete again after he received what was deemed to be sufficient medical clearance.

“He suffered a brain bleed (a year ago),” NAC executive director Jeff Mullen said. “He had a suspension of one year. He had to bring before the commission clearance from a neurosurgeon and a neurologist independently who recommended he be licensed. We have that material. … I have faith in our doctors.”

Luque (21-9-1 MMA, 14-5 UFC) is scheduled to headline UFC on ESPN 51 against former lightweight champ Rafael dos Anjos (32-14 MMA, 21-12 UFC) in a welterweight clash on Aug. 12 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

In a recent interview with Middle Easy, Luque did not specifically mention the brain bleed, but he explained how he was required to undergo additional medical testing in order to return to competition. That could be why, according to Luque, his bout vs. dos Anjos was moved from July to August.

“I’m not 100 percent sure why it moved,” Luque said. “But I believe part of it was kind of the commission wanted me to get some more exams and get cleared since my last fight because I got suspended six months. I was cleared to fight in February but still they wanted some more exams. (We’re) just making sure I’m 100 percent. I do feel 100 percent, so I’m sure that everything is going to be good. They wanted to wait maybe a year after my last fight.”
