UFC on ESPN 37 medical suspensions: Josh Emmett among 6 fighters suspended indefinitely by Texas commission

Six fighters were handed indefinite medical suspensions after what many fans are calling the most violent UFC card of the year.

UFC on ESPN 37 took place Saturday at Moody Center in Austin, Texas where the promotion put on what many fans are calling one of the most violent cards of 2022.

With violence, however, comes injuries. Tuesday, the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR), the commissioning body that regulated the event, released a list of medical suspensions for UFC on ESPN 37 fighters. The TDLR does not give injury specifics, but reveals the duration of suspensions.

Among those handed indefinite suspensions were main event winner Josh Emmett, co-main event loser Tim Means, Albert Duraev, Julian Marquez, Deron Winn, and Kyle Daukaus. Note: fighters can return sooner than the date listed if they receive medical clearance from a physician prior to completion of their suspension.

Dana White: Joanna Jedrzejczyk ‘without a doubt’ a future UFC Hall of Famer

Dana White says Joanna Jedrzejczyk is UFC Hall of Fame-worthy.

AUSTIN, Texas – [autotag]Dana White[/autotag] has a special place for [autotag]Joanna Jedrzejczyk[/autotag].

The UFC president has assured Jedrzejczyk (16-5 MMA, 10-5 UFC) will have a spot in the UFC Hall of Fame in the near future. This comes just weeks after Jedrzejczyk decided to hang up the gloves following a knockout loss in a rematch to Zhang Weili at UFC 275 in Singapore.

“Oh, without a doubt,” White told MMA Junkie at the UFC on ESPN 37 post-fight press conference. “(She was) one of the women who helped build women’s MMA, especially in the UFC – always fun to watch, always came to fight.

“Her walk in that night when she got to the arena, (was) gangster as usual. I love everything about Joanna, and I’m glad that she fought and ended her career here with us.”

Jedrzejczyk walked away from MMA after fighting for 10 years professionally. She remains the most dominant strawweight champion in UFC history with the record for most consecutive title defenses in the division with five.

The Polish fighter, who held the title from 2015 to 2017, has notable wins over Jessica Andrade, Michelle Waterson, Tecia Torres, Claudia Gadelha and current champion Carla Esparza, among others.

Judges Gonna Judge: Was Calvin Kattar snubbed in split decision loss to Josh Emmett at UFC on ESPN 37?

Our MMA Junkie judging panel takes a closer look at the scores in the UFC on ESPN 37 main event between Josh Emmett and Calvin Kattar.

Welcome to “Judges Gonna Judge,” where our MMA Junkie staff panel revisits the most controversial decision that occurred over the weekend.

This week, we take a look at the UFC main event showdown in the capitol of the Lone Star State, a five-round featherweight battle between [autotag]Josh Emmett[/autotag] and [autotag]Calvin Kattar[/autotag]. The fight headlined UFC on ESPN 37 at the Moody Center in Austin, Texas.

On a night filled with stoppages, the bout scheduled for the longest time saw the final horn, and ultimately sparked the latest MMA judging debate after Emmett was announced the winner by split decision.

Two of the five rounds were split among the three men who rendered their decision. Rounds 1, 3, and 5 were scored identically by each judge, but Round 2 and Round 4 resulted in differing opinions.

Official judges Chris Lee and Doug Crosby scored the second round in Kattar’s favor, while Sal D’Amato saw it for Emmett. Lee scored the fourth round for Emmett, while Crosby and D’Amato gave it to Kattar. Ultimately Emmett earned 48-47 totals from Lee and D’Amato, while Crosby turned in a 48-47 for Kattar.

Of the 19 media scores submitted on MMA Decisions, 14 scorecards saw the fight for Kattar, including one 49-46 scorecard. The 5 scorecards for Emmett were all 48-47 totals.

MMA Junkie’s Matthew Wells, Farah Hannoun, and Nolan King put on their judging hats and break the fight down by each round.
