Roque Martinez vs. Alexander Romanov booked as late addition to UFC on ESPN+ 35

Roque Martinez is the newest member of the UFC roster – and he waste no time in making his debut.

A heavyweight matchup is a late addition to the UFC on ESPN+ 35 lineup.

Former RIZIN fighter [autotag]Roque Martinez[/autotag] has signed with the UFC and will take on Romania’s [autotag]Alexander Romanov[/autotag] at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas on Saturday.

MMA Junkie confirmed the booking with a person with knowledge of the situation after the fight appeared on the UFC’s official stats page.

Romanov (11-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) was supposed to compete last Saturday at UFC on ESPN+ 34. However, hours before the event’s scheduled start time, Romanov’s fight was pulled from the lineup as a result of his opponent Marcos Rogerio de Lima testing positive for COVID-19.

The cancellation was the third in as many bookings Romanov has faced since signing with the promotion in early 2019.

As for the 34-year-old Martinez (15-5-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC), the Guam-born big man has won three of his most recent four outings. In his five RIZIN outings, Martinez won three fights – only losing to Mirko Crop Cop and Jake Heun.

Glover Teixeira out of UFC on ESPN+ 35 after positive COVID test; Thiago Santos fight rescheduled

UFC on ESPN+ 35 loses its main event, which is considered a light heavyweight No. 1 contender fight.

[autotag]Glover Teixeira[/autotag] vs. [autotag]Thiago Santos[/autotag] is still set to happen – just not next week as originally planned.

Texiera (31-7 MMA, 14-5 UFC) is out of his scheduled UFC on ESPN+ 35 headliner against Santos (21-7 MMA, 13-6 UFC). As a result, the fight is off the Sept. 12 card but has been pushed back to Oct. 3.

A person with knowledge of the situation confirmed the new date to MMA Junkie late Wednesday night following an initial report from Combate, which attributed the change to Teixeira testing positive to COVID-19. The person asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an announcement.

There is no word on what the new UFC on ESPN+ 35 main event will be. Currently, Holly Holm vs. Irene Aldana is slated to headline the Oct. 3 event expected to take place on “Fight Island” in Abu Dhabi.

With Jon Jones vacating the UFC light heavyweight championship recently, the promotion booked Jan Blachowicz vs. Dominick Reyes to take place for the vacant title Sept. 26 at UFC 253. The fight between Santos and Teixeira, which presumably could be three rounds instead of five if it’s not a main event, is considered to be a No. 1 contender fight. Both men have challenged for the belt before.

Santos has not competed since a close split decision loss to Jones in July 2019 at UFC 239. In that fight, Santos tore ligaments in both knees, which required surgery.

As for Teixeira, the 40-year-old has won four straight fights, including most recently a dominant beatdown of Anthony Smith in May.

With the removal, the UFC on ESPN+ 35 lineup includes:

  • Angela Hill vs. Michelle Waterson
  • Andrea Lee vs. Roxanne Modafferi
  • Tyson Nam vs. Matt Schnell
  • Bruno Silva vs. Tagir Ulanbekov
  • Frank Camacho vs. Brok Weaver
  • Kyle Nelson vs. Billy Quarantillo
  • Bryan Barberena vs. Anthony Ivy
  • Matt Frevola vs. Roosevelt Roberts
  • Bobby Green vs. Alan Patrick

Bobby Green steps in for Rodrigo Vargas vs. Alan Patrick at UFC on ESPN+ 35

After losing his scheduled opponent for next week’s card, Alan Patrick has a new one.

After losing his scheduled opponent for next week’s card, [autotag]Alan Patrick[/autotag] has a new one.

Patrick (15-2 MMA, 5-2 UFC) will take on short-notice replacement [autotag]Bobby Green[/autotag] (26-10-1 MMA, 7-5-1 UFC) after [autotag]Rodrigo Vargas[/autotag] (11-4 MMA, 0-2 UFC) recently was removed from the lightweight fight. UFC officials announced the change Wednesday.

UFC on ESPN+ 35, headlined by Thiago Santos vs. Glover Teixeira in a key light heavyweight matchup, takes place Sept. 12 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The card streams on ESPN+.

Green has back-to-back wins for the first time since an eight-fight winning streak in Strikeforce and the UFC from 2011-2014. After consecutive decision losses to Drakkar Klose and Franciso Trinaldo, Green has bounced back in the COVID-19 era with decision wins over Clay Guida in June and Lando Vannata a little more than a month ago. The Vannata win was a rematch from a split draw the two had at UFC 216 in 2017.

Patrick (15-2 MMA, 5-2 UFC), a training partner of Ronaldo Souza, has not competed since October 2018. Patrick was scheduled to fight Frank Camacho on April 25, but the event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He was then booked to fight Marc Diakiese on July 15, but withdrew for unknown reasons.

Vargas (11-4 MMA, 0-2 UFC) still was in search of his first UFC win. After losing a unanimous decision to Alex da Silva in August 2019, Vargas was disqualified due to an illegal knee in his second UFC outing against Brok Weaver. In 11 wins, Vargas has eight finishes. But now his quest for that first UFC victory is on hold.

With the addition, the Sept. 12 lineup includes:

  • Thiago Santos vs. Glover Teixeira
  • Angela Hill vs. Michelle Waterson
  • Andrea Lee vs. Roxanne Modafferi
  • Tyson Nam vs. Matt Schnell
  • Bruno Silva vs. Tagir Ulanbekov

  • Kyle Nelson vs. Billy Quarantillo
  • Bryan Barberena vs. Anthony Ivy
  • Matt Frevola vs. Roosevelt Roberts
  • Bobby Green vs. Alan Patrick
  • John Allan vs. Ed Herman
  • Justine Kish vs. Sabina Mazo
  • Ottman Azaitar vs. Khama Worthy

John Allan now has two UFC bouts booked on his upcoming schedule.

[autotag]John Allan[/autotag] now has two UFC bouts booked on his upcoming schedule.

Already slated to compete at UFC 255, Allan also will step in as a late replacement for Gerald Meerschaert to fight Ed Herman Sept. 12 at UFC on ESPN+ 35.

A person with knowledge of the situation confirmed the development to MMA Junkie’s Farah Hannoun but wished to remain anonymous since the UFC has yet to make an announcement. MMA Fighting was first to report the news.

[lawrence-related id=431448,540646]

Allan’s short-notice replacement fight is in addition to him meeting Roman Dolidze on Nov. 21 at UFC 255. As of now, the UFC plans on keeping both bouts for Allan (13-5 MMA, 0-0 UFC).

Allan last competed at UFC on ESPN+ 13 in August 2019. The 27-year-old Brazilian  defeated Mike Rodriguez in his UFC debut, but the victory was later overturned to a no contest after Allan tested positive for tamoxifen – a prohibited substance. He was issued a suspension by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency.

Allan is 5-1 in his past six bouts and trains out of Chute Boxe Monstro. Allan also competed on Dana White’s Contender Series where he suffered a submission loss to Vinicius Moreira.
