UFC on ESPN 35 video: Francisco Figueiredo, brother of UFC champ Deiveson, scores nasty kneebar

Francisco Figueiredo’s first octagon finish was a nasty one as he he violently tapped out Daniel Da Silva at UFC on ESPN 35.

[autotag]Francisco Figueiredo[/autotag]’s first octagon finish was a nasty one when he violently tapped out Daniel da Silva at UFC on ESPN 35 on Saturday.

Figueiredo (13-4-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) wasted no time getting the job done at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. After getting taken down by da Silva (11-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC) early on, he rolled into a kneebar and cranked to elicit the tap from his opponent just 78 seconds into the flyweight fight.

Check out the replay of Figueiredo’s victory, which was the kneebar in the history of the 125-pound division, below (via Twitter):

Figueiredo, who is the younger brother of reigning UFC flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo, had split results in his first two promotional appearances. He finally showed some of his best in his third fight, getting a critical finish against da Silva, who had never been submitted prior to the contest.

“I’ve been training jiu-jitsu a lot and been training really hard,” Figueiredo said through an interpreter during his post-fight interview with Michael Bisping. “The technique, it just came out automatically from all the training we do.”

UFC on ESPN 35 video: Rob Font misses weight for main event with Marlon Vera

Rob Font stepped on the scale 2.5 pounds over the bantamweight limit for the UFC on ESPN 35 headliner with Marlon Vera.

LAS VEGAS – The main event for UFC on ESPN 35 is official, but it didn’t come without hiccups

[autotag]Rob Font[/autotag] (19-5 MMA, 9-4 UFC) missed weight for the bantamweight headliner with [autotag]Marlon Vera[/autotag] (20-7-1 MMA, 10-6 UFC). Both men stepped on the scale Friday in Las Vegas to make the UFC on ESPN 35 headliner official.

Vera was the first fighter at the weigh-in session to step on the scale. “Chito” used his one-pound allowance for a non-title bout and weighed in at 136 pounds. Font, however, entered the weigh-in room approximately 61 minutes into the two-hour window. He was 138.5 pounds, which is 2.5 pounds over the limit.

If Vera accepts the fight at a catchweight, Font is expected to be fined a percentage of his purse, which will be issued to Vera.

Check out their trips to the scale in the video above and check back for more updates.

Marlon Vera thinks title contention on line in UFC on ESPN 35 main event vs. Rob Font

Marlon Vera expects title contender status with win over Rob Font at UFC on ESPN 35.

[autotag]Marlon Vera[/autotag] thinks a lot is on the line in his next UFC bout.

The rising UFC bantamweight thinks title contention is in the horizon, and if he beats Rob Font, he’ll quickly enter the top of the division. Vera (20-7-1 MMA, 12-6 UFC) and Font (19-5 MMA, 9-4 UFC) are set to clash in the main event of Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 35 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Its Vera’s first headlining bout under the UFC banner.

“I believe a great win on Saturday night would put me on title contention,” Vera told reporters at the UFC on ESPN 35 media day on Wednesday. “Depending on how the cards are played at the top, it’s either I can go straight for the belt or I have another fight. But a win this Saturday puts me right there.”

[lawrence-related id=2532046,1574032]

Currently, Vera is on a two-fight wining streak. He’s coming off a highlight-reel knockout win over former campion Frankie Edgar this past November.

The Ecuadorian fighter is 8-2 in his past 10 UFC outings. The only defeats came in 2020 in a controversial split decision loss to Song Yadong and a unanimous decision defeat to former featherweight champion Jose Aldo.

At 29, Vera thinks he’s in the best form of his career.

“I’ve got a lot of tough opponents in front of me, a lot of former champions,” Vera said. “I feel like all that and fighting at the top consistently will just make me a better fighter and make me more dangerous for future fights.

“I feel I’m at a great moment and a good mental space. Physically, I don’t think I can train harder than I already did. So I feel great, and Saturday night will come and I will kick Rob’s ass.”

On three-fight winning streak, ex-UFC champ Andrei Arlovski not ruling out another title run

Former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski has the title on his mind ahead of his return at UFC on ESPN 35.

LAS VEGAS – It shouldn’t come as a surprise, but [autotag]Andrei Arlovski[/autotag] finds himself back on another winning streak.

The former UFC heavyweight champion and longtime MMA staple has put together three wins in a row over the past year and will attempt to make it four Saturday. Arlovski (33-20 MMA, 22-14 UFC) returns to the cage in the UFC on ESPN 35 co-main event against Jake Collier (13-6 MMA, 5-5 UFC).

It’s the first time Arlovski has more than two consecutive wins since his 6-0 UFC title contender run from 2013-2015. At 43, Arlovski is not ruling out another crack at UFC gold.

“(I want to) be champion again, to fight the top fighters,” Arlovski said at Wednesday’s UFC on ESPN 35 media day. “I’m an employee of the UFC and I’m going to fight what they give me to fight. Jake is another tough, young stud and a dangerous heavy hitter. I have to be alert and I have to stick to my game plan, as usual – keep my hands up and move around.”

[lawrence-related id=2541924,2541881]

On top of having a chance to extend his wining streak to four, Arlovski also can tie the record for most wins in UFC history. Arlovski currently sits at 22; Donald Cerrone and Jim Miller lead with 23.

Arlovski does appreciate being in the record books, but beating Collier on Saturday is far more important to him.

“For me, of course it’s nice. But it’s more important for my striking coach, Paulino Hernandez,” Arlovski said. “He’s all about the records like strikes per round, etc., etc., etc. For me, it’s more important to beat my opponent.”
