The Nominees

Daniel Rodriguez def. Tim Means at UFC on ESPN+ 25

[autotag]Daniel Rodriguez[/autotag] (11-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) rose to the occasion in his UFC debut, taking out Tim Means (29-12-1 MMA, 11-9 UFC), a 21-fight veteran of the organization, in the second round of their welterweight bout.

After battering Means on the feet and putting him in serious danger of a knockout, Rodriguez changed his attack to a standing guillotine choke. It went in deep, and shortly thereafter Means tapped and the fight was over.

Alex Polizzi def. Jamal Pogues at LFA 82

[autotag]Alex Polizzi[/autotag] (6-0) scored his ticket to a Bellator contract by claiming the LFA light heavyweight title with a submission finish of Jamal Pogues (7-3) in the championship rounds.

Although submissions decrease in likelihood later into fights, Polizzi snatched the leg of Pogues in the early stages of the fourth round and locked in a heel hook. Pogues tapped out, and Polizzi remained undefeated in his young career.

Georgi Karakhanyan def. Paul Redmond at Bellator Europe 7

In his return to the lightweight division, [autotag]Georgi Karakhanyan[/autotag] (29-10-1 MMA, 7-8 BMMA) picked up a much-needed win against Paul Redmond (15-9 MMA, 2-1 BMMA).

After going on a three-fight drought, Karakhanyan had an entertaining battle with Redmond before locking in a guillotine choke in the early stages of the round to finish the fight and get his hand raised for the first time in 21 months.

Jimmy Crute def. Michal Oleksiejczuk at UFC on ESPN+ 26

[autotag]Jimmy Crute[/autotag] (11-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) rebounded from the first loss of his career with an impressive finish of Michal Oleksiejczuk (14-4 MMA, 2-2 UFC) in their light heavyweight matchup.

Crute put his sizable ground advantage to use when he put Oleksiejczuk on his back and synched in a Kimura to elicit the tap in just over three minutes.

Jordan Griffin def. TJ Brown via guillotine choke at UFC on ESPN+ 27

Just when it seemed he was not going to get the finish, [autotag]Jordan Griffin[/autotag] (18-7 MMA, 1-2 UFC) choked TJ Brown (14-7 MMA, 0-1 UFC) out cold.

Attempting to lock in a guillotine choke from bottom position, Griffin’s attempt to finish the fight appeared that it would be unfruitful. Seconds later, though, the fight was over and Griffin had his first UFC win.

The Winner: Jordan Griffin

[vertical-gallery id=495276]

Griffin’s first UFC win was an impressive one.

After going 0-2 with two unanimous decision losses to kick off his octagon tenure, Griffin needed to get his hand raised in order to ensure his future with the organization.

He did just that, and in slick fashion, no less.

Griffin went for a usual guillotine choke while on bottom, which cageside commentator Michael Bisping wrote off as having any real chance of finishing the fight. He was wrong, however, because Griffin was able to finish the fight with a useful technique.

ā€œI love that choke ā€“ thatā€™s one of my go-to submissions,” Griffin said. “When you hook that in over the shoulder, itā€™s almost impossible to escape. People think they can circle around because their legs are free, but that actually makes it tighter. As soon as I locked it in, I knew it was over and that he was out. Thatā€™s my black belt killer right there.ā€

  • Deiveson Figueiredo beat Joseph Benavidez at UFC on ESPN+ 27, but wasn’t eligible to win the flyweight title. So what now for the division?
  • And what about the future for Benavidez after his loss, now that he’s lost three flyweight title fights?
  • UFC Norfolk also saw Felicia Spencer and Megan Anderson pick up big women’s featherweight wins. So which of the two should be next for champ Amanda Nunes?
  • UFC 248 goes down this week with Israel Adesanya’s first title defense against Yoel Romero. We break down that fight, plus …

USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie rankings, March 3: How high did Deiveson Figueiredo climb?

Deiveson Figueiredo picked up arguably the biggest win of his career when he knocked out Joseph Benavidez in the UFC on ESPN+ 27 main event.

[autotag]Deiveson Figueiredo[/autotag] picked up arguably the biggest win of his career when he knocked out Joseph Benavidez in the UFC on ESPN+ 27 main event.

But because Figueiredo missed weight by 2.5 pounds the day before, he was not eligible to win the UFC’s vacant flyweight title. Benavidez was eligible, but fell short for the third time in his UFC career.

Even though Figueiredo couldn’t win the title with his knockout victory, it won’t hold him back in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie rankings. But how high did he climb, and how far did Benavidez fall with the loss.

Plus, what were the repercussions in the women’s featherweight division, in which former Invicta FC champions Felicia Spencer and Megan Anderson both picked up knockout wins ā€“Ā and made cases to be the next challenger for dual champ Amanda Nunes?

Take a look at all the moves in the latest rankings. This week should create some movement, as well, with the middleweight title fight between champ Israel Adesanya and Yoel Romero, and the women’s strawweight title fight between champ Zhang Weili and Joanna Jedrzejczyk.

Luis Pena: ‘I wouldn’t want to watch’ my UFC Norfolk win over Steve Garcia

Take a look inside Luis Pena’s win over Steve GarciaĀ at UFC on ESPN+ 27 in Norfolk, Va.

NORFOLK, Va. ā€“ [autotag]Luis Pena[/autotag] beat Steve Garcia with a unanimous decision Saturday to close out the preliminary card at UFC on ESPN+ 27 in Norfolk, Va.

Take a look inside the fight with Pena, who got back in the win column and has won three of his past four.

Result: Luis Pena def. Steve Garcia via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
Updated records: Pena (8-2 MMA, 4-2 UFC), Garcia (11-4 MMA, 0-1 UFC)
Key stat: Garcia outstruck Pena 89-27, but it was Pena’s control on the canvas that appeared to win over the judges.

Pena on the fight’s key moment

“There was definitely a time when I had his back that I thought, ‘Forget this. Let me push off and stand this thing up and bang.’ But then I got back in myself and focused on winning. As much as I want to entertain, I want to win and I need to make that money.”

Pena on an opponent switch early in fight week

“As much as Iā€™d like to say that the last-minute change in opponents messed with me, once I got in there it was just a fight. It was a big stylistic change, and we had to redo the game plan on the fly, but I canā€™t use that as an excuse.”

Pena on putting on a show next time

“Iā€™m happy with the win, but thatā€™s not the way that I like to do it. This is my job, this is my career, and I want to put on a show for the fans. Sometimes, when you are in that situation, you have to do what you have to do. But Iā€™m an entertainer. I go out there and put on a show for my fans. I like when people tell me that they like watching me fight, and I wouldnā€™t want to watch that fight.”

After 13 months away, little bit of everything fight perfect for Kyler Phillips at UFC Norfolk

Take a look inside Kyler Phillips’ win over Gabriel SilvaĀ at UFC on ESPN+ 27 in Norfolk, Va.

NORFOLK, Va. ā€“ [autotag]Kyler Phillips[/autotag] beat Gabriel Silva with a unanimous decision Saturday on the preliminary card at UFC on ESPN+ 27 in Norfolk, Va.

Take a look inside the fight with Phillips, who picked up a win in his UFC debut.

Result: Kyler Phillips def. Gabriel Silva via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
Updated records: Phillips (7-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC), Silva (8-2 MMA, 0-2 UFC)
Key stat: Phillips landed nearly 60 percent of his strikes and outstruck Silva 112-43.

Phillips on the fight’s key moment

“He hit me with a good right hand and that knee bar was close, but he was never going to finish it ā€“ I would let it break first. … That kid was tough. I knew he would try to wrestle me, but I let him do it a little bit so I could feel his energy, and then I hit him with some big shots. I felt like I could finish him, but I tired myself out a little bit in the first round. I knew I would have him in the second and third, though, and win those wrestling matches and jiu-jitsu transactions. I kept him busy with movement and jabs. Heā€™s tough, but I just kept at it and focused on winning the grappling matches.”

Phillips on fighting after a long layoff

“I hadnā€™t fought in over a year, so I knew that would be the perfect fight for me. I got to grapple a lot, had some muay Thai and karate stuff, good hard boxing, and ground and pound ā€“Ā so I needed that to get back in this game.”

Phillips on his cardio

“Iā€™m excited. I know I can push that full gas tank. Some people questioned that because I was finishing everyone, but I proved that to everyone tonight.”

Sean Brady wants a big name next after UFC Norfolk win over Ismail Naurdiev

Take a look inside Sean Brady’s win over Ismail NaurdievĀ at UFC on ESPN+ 27 in Norfolk, Va.

NORFOLK, Va. ā€“ [autotag]Sean Brady[/autotag] beat Ismail Naurdiev with a unanimous decision Saturday to open the preliminary card at UFC on ESPN+ 27 in Norfolk, Va.

Take a look inside the fight with Brady, who stayed unbeaten with his fourth decision victory in his past five fights.

Result: Sean Brady def. Ismail Naurdiev via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27)
Updated records: Brady (12-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC), Naurdiev (19-4 MMA, 2-2 UFC)
Key stat: Brady landed four takedowns and outstruck Naurdiev 78-34.

Brady on the fight’s key moment

“(The) strategy going in was definitely to use my grappling. I was trying to feel him out a bit at the beginning. He came out hot. I didnā€™t come out as fast as I wanted to and didnā€™t get the takedown. I knew he would start to slow down because he throws a lot of big, explosive stuff, so I knew Iā€™d be able to take over in the second and third rounds and impose my grappling.”

Brady on showing more elements of his game

“When I fought Court McGee, I showed a lot more of my striking, so it was nice to show off my grappling a little bit more. Iā€™m a way better grappler than I am a striker, and Iā€™m a pretty good striker. Iā€™m looking forward to improving and showing off new skills each time.”

Brady on what he wants next

“A couple hundred people drove down from Philly, so it was nice to hear that crowd so early on in the night. If the UFC wants to keep fighting me on the East Coast, Iā€™ll bring crowds in all day long. Iā€™d like a bigger name now. Court had a big name. Ismail didnā€™t have the biggest name, but heā€™s super tough. Iā€™m ready to keep proving myself.”

Brendan Allen wants to avenge Trevin Giles loss from 2016 after UFC Norfolk

Take a look inside Brendan Allen’s TKO of Tom BreeseĀ at UFC on ESPN+ 27 in Norfolk, Va.

NORFOLK, Va. ā€“ [autotag]Brendan Allen[/autotag] beat Tom Breese with a first-round TKO Saturday on the preliminary card at UFC on ESPN+ 27 in Norfolk, Va.

Result: Brendan Allen def. Tom Breese via TKO (strikes) ā€“Ā Round 1, 4:47
Updated records: Allen (14-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC), Breese (11-2 MMA, 4-2 UFC)
Key stat: Allen outstruck Breese 38-5 en route to his TKO win.

Allen on the fight’s key moment

“I hit him with the body kick, and that made him move back a little and he shot from there. If he wants to go to the ground, thatā€™s fine with me. When I was on top, I just kept hitting him and found the openings. I took my time, but he wasnā€™t moving, so I just unloaded until they stopped me.”

Allen on winning some new fans

“Hopefully I have a lot of fans tune in now. Hopefully I get a big boost in my following, and hopefully the bosses realize that Iā€™m someone who can make an impact in this division. … I felt good tonight. Iā€™m really happy right now, itā€™s hard to put into words. I think Iā€™ve found my stride and Iā€™m really coming into my own. I have the best coaches in the world and I wouldnā€™t travel so far from my little baby if I didnā€™t believe that. Iā€™m blessed and happy to be here and canā€™t wait to show more.”

Allen on what he wants next

“Iā€™d love to avenge one of my losses at ‘International Fight Week’ coming up (against Trevin Giles). But right now, I just want to go home and see my baby.”
