ABU DHABI – [autotag]Modestas Bukauskas[/autotag] beat Andreas Michailidis with a first-round TKO Wednesday on the preliminary card at UFC on ESPN 13 in Abu Dhabi.

Take a look inside the fight with Bukauskas, a former Cage Warriors light heavyweight champion.

Result: Modestas Bukauskas def. Andreas Michailidis via TKO (strikes) – Round 1, 5:00
Updated records: Bukauskas (11-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC), Michailidis (12-4 MMA, 0-1 UFC)
Key stat: Bukauskas won for the seventh straight time – all of which have come by stoppage.

Bukauskas on the fight’s key moment

“I knew once those shots were landing that they were going to be hard because in my last fight in Cage Warriors, I finished the guy with the exact same finish. Even when I went with (Michailidis) to the medical room, he was completely dazed and confused. So I wish for a speedy recovery for my opponent. I would have liked to finish it in a different way because I was just starting to feel my range … but to come out there and see those elbows and land them, I couldn’t have asked for anything better.”

Bukauskas on seeing his UFC dream come true

“I feel absolutely amazing. I’ve been visualizing this moment. Every single time the opponent got announced, I was visualizing it every single day – visualizing the finish, writing it on my board and everything like that. For it finally to come to fruition in the cage is absolutely amazing. To be part of such a historic event, as well – I couldn’t have asked for anything better.”

Bukauskas on what he wants next

“I’m really hoping to get on the next ‘Fight Island’ card. I know they are going to be running events in Las Vegas and depending on the pandemic, they’re going to come back here. So I would love to be back on a show on ‘Fight Island’ the next time around. I’m going to let this leg heal, get the swelling down, but then I’ll be back into training and ready to go and take on new challenges.”

Chimaev on returning to welterweight

“I feel amazing. This was the plan: Smash the guy, take the money and go home. My coach told me, ‘You have to do wrestling now. Take him down and smash him.’ I listen to my coach. I did this. This division is not my division, … but I felt good. I did this before – same weight class. But down in weight is much better for me. I want to be champion at welterweight. I’m going to be champion in that.”

Chimaev on what he wants next

“I could fight next week if they have (a fight). I told them, ‘Give me Donald Cerrone.’ If they give (him to) me, it’d be an amazing fight for me. I’m going to smash him and everybody is going to talk about it.”

Murphy on the “Fight Island” experience

“Dana White has done a fantastic job with keeping these fights on with what’s going on. I’m very grateful to even get out of the house and come to Abu Dhabi, where the hospitality is amazing. If ‘Fight Island’ comes back later in the year, I’ll be here.”

Murphy on what he wants next

“I wanted to prove that I belong here in the UFC. I plan to spend the rest of my career in the UFC, climb to the top, get into that top 15 and obviously one day be champion. I’m just going to go back, heal up for a month and then get back to training and grow and grow. That’s all I want to do: grow.”

Unbeaten Jack Shore would put his rear-naked choke up against any UFC bantamweight

Take a look inside Jack Shore’s submission of Aaron Phillips at UFC on ESPN 13 in Abu Dhabi.

ABU DHABI – Jack Shore beat Aaron Phillips with a second-round submission Wednesday to open the preliminary card at UFC on ESPN 13 in Abu Dhabi.

Take a look inside the fight with Shore, an 8-1 favorite who stayed unbeaten and got his 12th finish in 13 fights.

Result: Jack Shore def. Aaron Phillips via submission (rear-naked choke) – Round 2, 2:29
Updated records: Shore (13-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC), Phillips (12-4 MMA, 0-3 UFC)
Key stat: Shore landed three takedowns and outstruck Phillips 42-7.

Shore on the fight’s key moment

“I honestly believe if I get in that position on anyone in the division, they’re in trouble. That’s my go-to (submission). I’m very dangerous from that top position, especially in MMA with the ground-and-pound and the elbows. When I lock that body triangle in and they start to go belly down and turtle up, I know the end is near then.”

Shore on fighting off cage rust

“It was a good performance, all in all. I felt a little sloppy at the beginning of the first. … The fight week’s been tough with the time change, the change of opponents, and also I’ve been out of the cage about 10 months now. … It took me a minute or two to get in the flow.”

Shore on what he wants next

“I’m in non rush. I’m 25 years of age (and) I’ve got 13 pro fights and 12 finishes. What I’m doing at the minute is obviously working. I don’t want to be one of those guys banging a fight out for the sake of it because I need the money. I want to bring a better package to the octagon ever single time. I want the next version of myself to be able to smash the me from this fight. … I’d like to fight again before the end of the year.”

Sean Shelby’s Shoes: What’s next for Calvin Kattar after UFC on ESPN 13 win?

See who Calvin Kattar should fight next after his victory over Dan Ige in the UFC on ESPN 13 main event.

(ALSO SEE: Sean Shelby’s Shoes: What’s next for Dan Ige after UFC on ESPN 13 loss?)

[autotag]Calvin Kattar[/autotag] was able to display the depths of his talent Wednesday when he earned his first main event victory against Dan Ige at UFC on ESPN 13.

Kattar (22-4 MMA, 6-2 UFC) emerged victorious from the featherweight headliner with a unanimous decision over Ige (14-3 MMA, 6-2 UFC) to give him four wins in his past five fights.

The Boston native put Ige’s name on a resume that includes other notables such as Jeremy Stephens, Ricardo Lamas and Shane Burgos. He called for a title shot against Alexander Volkanovski next, but with multiple big fights reportedly on the horizon at 145 pounds, chances are he won’t be next in line.

[lawrence-related id=535369]

He could get the next best thing, though. As suggested in the UFC 251 edition of “Sean Shelby’s Shoes,” former champ Max Holloway (21-6 MMA, 17-6 UFC) could be a logical foe .

But does that fight make the most sense for Kattar? Watch the video above for thoughts and analysis on his future.

Sean Shelby’s Shoes: What’s next for Dan Ige after UFC on ESPN 13 loss?

See who Dan Ige should fight next after his loss to Calvin Kattar in the UFC on ESPN 13 headliner.

(ALSO SEE: Sean Shelby’s Shoes: What’s next for Calvin Kattar after UFC on ESPN 13 win?)

[autotag]Dan Ige[/autotag] was not able to take the next step forward in the featherweight pecking order on Wednesday when he came up short against Calvin Kattar in the UFC on ESPN 13 main event.

Ige (14-3 MMA, 6-2 UFC) had his six-fight winning streak snapped with a unanimous decision loss to Kattar (22-4 MMA, 6-2 UFC) in the headlining bout, which took place at Flash Forum at Yas Island in Abu Dhabi.

Although he came out on the wrong side of the scorecards, Ige showed tremendous durability and some dangerous offense. It wasn’t enough against Kattar, but it proved he belongs in the upper tier of the 145-pound weight class.

[lawrence-related id=535369]

Even in defeat, there are all sorts of options on the table for “Dynamite.” A matchup with [autotag]Jeremy Stephens[/autotag] (28-18 MMA, 15-17 UFC), who is also coming off a loss to Kattar, could be a potential option.

Is that what makes most sense for Ige after the loss? Watch the video above for thoughts and analysis on his future.

5 biggest takeaways from UFC on ESPN 13: Calvin Kattar a contender, UFC newcomers shine, more

Thoughts and analysis of the biggest storylines coming out of UFC on ESPN 13, which took place Wednesday in Abu Dhabi.

What mattered most at UFC on ESPN 13 in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi? Here are a few post-fight musings …

* * * * *

1. Calvin Kattar proves he belongs

[autotag]Calvin Kattar[/autotag] left no doubt about his position as a top featherweight with his win over Dan Ige in the main event. Yes, we knew he was good before the unanimous decision, but the performance answered some critical questions about exactly where he fits in.

Kattar’s win over Jeremy Stephens at UFC 249 was a highlight-reel finish, but “Lil’ Heathen” is on a five-fight slide, so it’s hard to quantify what that really means. Ige, meanwhile, brought a six-fight winning streak into the matchup and all the momentum a fighter could ask for.

That momentum was brought to a halt by Kattar, who showed off his slick boxing, durability and conditioning to go five rounds at a strong pace. Those are all tools “The Boston Finisher” will need if he wants to make it to the very top of the stacked 145-pound division. Kattar has solid fight IQ and knows how to fight to his strengths, though, and that will take him a long way.

At this point it’s almost impossible to pick a bad fight for Kattar when sifting through the rest of the division’s contenders. That’s a credit to his style, and unless something dramatic changes, Kattar is going to be part of the conversation at featherweight for years to come.
