UFC on ESPN 10 results: Takedowns help Andre Fili to decision win over Charles Jourdain

Takedowns helped Andre Fili to a split decision win over Charles Jourdain.

It seemed early in [autotag]Andre Fili[/autotag]’s fight with [autotag]Charles Jourdain[/autotag] that it might only be a matter of time before someone caught the other with a highlight-reel finish.

That finish never came, though not for lack of effort. Fili (21-7 MMA, 9-6 UFC) took a split decision from Jourdain (10-3 MMA, 1-2 UFC) with a pair of 29-28 scores in a close fight that may have been decided by Fili’s takedowns. A dissenting scorecard was 29-28 for Jourdain.

The featherweight bout was part of the UFC on ESPN 10 main card at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. It aired on ESPN and streamed on ESPN+.

[lawrence-related id=526716,526720]

Jourdain kicked to the body early, then tried to push forward. But Fili stung him with a right hand and came back with a left hook a few seconds later. Jourdain kept kicking to the body, then tried to go up high, but Fili worked his way through them. Fili kicked high, himself, a minute in. They traded high kicks, then continued to land on each other to the body. Midway through the round, when Jourdain kept coming hard with the kicks, Fili drilled him with one when he spun around. A knee landed a moment later.

But with 90 seconds left, Jourdain drilled Fili with a left hand and sent him crashing to the canvas. He went after him, but Fili recovered and was back to his feet relatively quickly, where Jourdain kept after him with another body kick. They swung for the fences inside the final 20 seconds, and Fili grabbed Jourdain and picked him up for a slam. The two jaw-jacked at each other before going back to their corners.

The second round was more of the same with plenty of kick exchanges – each out of both stances. Most times Jourdain kicked to Fili’s body, Fili returned fire with kicks up high. With two minutes left, Jourdain tried a spinning back fist that caught Fili flush, but didn’t put him down. The back-and-forth striking battle continued, but with 30 seconds Fili landed a takedown that may have been a difference-maker in a close round to score.

Fili landed a high kick early in the final round that nearly took Jourdain off his feet. Seconds later, he had to dip away from a spinning attack from Jourdain. Fili kept the pressure on, but after ducking past a jumping knee from Jourdain, he took him to the canvas for this third takedown – one in each round. Jourdain’s striking slowed down late after he got back to his feet. He was able to defend against another Fili takedown attempt with 45 seconds left, but not long after Fili took him down again to seemingly seal the deal.

Ray Borg issues positive statement on son’s condition after UFC on ESPN 10 withdrawal

Good news from Ray Borg regarding his 2-year-old son, Anthony.

Good news from [autotag]Ray Borg:[/autotag] His son is OK.

Two days before UFC on ESPN 10 took place Saturday, Borg withdrew from the event. Although an official reason wasn’t disclosed, Borg indicated on social media that he went home to be with his son.

On Saturday, Borg issued a statement on Twitter, providing a positive update that his son’s health scare was just that – a scare.

“Thank you all so much for the overwhelming love and support,” Borg wrote. “As you all know I pulled from my fight to be with my son. With his condition being lifelong, he is at risk for surgery every day. Although there were some worries about his shunt failing due to some malfunction symptoms, I am happy to let everyone know that he is at home doing well and will not need any surgery. Thank you everyone who had reached out. We love you all.”

Borg’s 2-year-old son, Anthony, was born with a brain condition in 2018, which contributed to a long layoff in Borg’s career.

On Saturday, Borg’s opponent, Merab Dvalishvili, won a dominant unanimous decision against replacement Gustavo Lopez at UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Tyson Nam obliterates Zarrukh Adashev with perfectly timed counter-punch knockout

“Holy smokes, don’t blink tonight!”

Now this is how you snap out of a slump.

On Saturday at UFC on ESPN 10, [autotag]Tyson Nam[/autotag] absolutely obliterated Zarrukh Adashev with a picture-perfect counter right hand just 32 seconds into the first round of their flyweight fight at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Adashev came out with an early mini-blitz, indicating he was ready for a scrap. Which apparently was all good with Nam, who delivered the boom moments later.

Check this out (via Twitter):

“His only chance was to come in hard from the start, but I’m gonna fight fire with fire,” Nam said afterward. “Like I always say, even though these guys can hit hard, I feel like I could always hit harder.”

With the devastating result, Nam picked up his first UFC win in three tries, snapping a two-fight losing streak.

That’s how you do.

UFC free fight: Cynthia Calvillo outpoints Cortney Casey to earn decision win

Ahead of her flyweight debut on Saturday, relive Cynthia Calvillo’s win over Cortney Casey at UFC on ESPN 1.

Although [autotag]Cynthia Calvillo[/autotag] wasn’t able to get the fight to the ground against [autotag]Cortney Casey[/autotag] last year, she showed off some of her striking skills en route to a notable win.

Calvillo (8-1-1 MMA, 5-1-1 UFC) faced Casey at UFC on ESPN 1 in February 2019 looking to make it two wins in a row.

In Round 1, Calvillo used effective leg kicks to keep Casey at bay and was able to land a strong knee in the clinch, followed by a right hand off the break. She continued to mix things up nicely by going to the body as well, as she showed solid improvements to her striking game.

Calvillo opened up Round 2 with some more leg kicks as Casey struggled to score anything effective moving forward. Calvillo landed a nice overhand right, using it to grab a hold of Casey’s back, but Casey was able to disengage with relative ease. Casey was having a hard time landing, but she did connect with a good lead right and a low kick that seemed to hurt Calvillo.

Casey recognized that Calvillo’s leg was bothering her, and looked to capitalize by attacking with leg kicks. Calvillo looked for the takedown by stacking Casey against the cage, but Casey defended well. The crowd started to grow restless as both women continued to engage in a gritty, tactical battle.

But as the clapper sounded to mark the final 10 seconds of the fight, Calvillo and Casey bit down on their mouthpieces and landed perhaps the best exchanges of the fight as the fight went all the way to the scorecards. After the judges rendered their scores, Calvillo had done enough to earn the decision win.

Calvillo then went on to battle to a majority draw with Marina Rodriguez last December in a fight where she missed weight by four-and-a-half pounds. Now she will make her flyweight debut this Saturday when she takes on Jessica Eye in the main event of UFC on ESPN 10. The event will take place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Before she faces Eye, relive Calvillo’s win over Casey in the video above.

Jessica Eye stands up to Joanne Calderwood criticism after UFC on ESPN 10 weight miss

Jessica Eye was in no mood to hear criticism after a tough weight cut resulted in her missing 126 pounds for UFC on ESPN 10.

For the second time in as many fights, [autotag]Jessica Eye[/autotag] missed weight – and this time she heard about it from a prominent UFC women’s flyweight contender.

Prior to UFC on ESPN 10 weigh-ins, Eye was confident that there would be no issues, chalking up her five-pound miss from December to bad timing with her menstrual cycle. On Friday, Eye was visibly in bad shape as she needed to the hoop to step on the scale but came in just over the limit at 126.25 pounds.

Not long after, 125-pound contender [autotag]Joanne Calderwood[/autotag] took a not-so-subtle jab at Eye in a tweet with the hashtag #makeflyweightgreatagain.

That prompted a back-and-forth between Eye, who was knocked out by women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko last year, and Calderwood, Shevchenko’s next challenger.

Calderwood questioned the validity of Eye’s official weight since her hands weren’t visible while on the scale.

Was it really .25 because I’ve heard from multiple people that you were 4lbs over 15 mins before you actually weighed in. Main event spot or not if you know your not gonna make it don’t take the fight.

Eye fired back, offering to fight outside of the octagon.

@DRkneevil your comical Jo jo, you play this sweet, incident person. You are as fake as the act you put on. Make sure to don’t play nice when see me at the @UFCPI. if you don’t want to take a fight in the octagon because you scare let set up gym fight your gym right by my house

And on they went.

it’s called being civil in a professional environment @UFCPI ain’t nothing I’d not say to your face..just like when you made comment on my cardio on one of my fights and when you first got to the pi I asked you in the locker room…are you here for the great cardio? Bu

Crazy how you went the internet to try to recruit people . 👏🏼 crazy because you could have had this conversation with me private but you prove to show how fake you are with this sweet girl attitude . Thanks for reminding me who you really are for second I kinda thought your were

Despite the weight miss, Eye’s fight against Cynthia Calvillo will continue as the UFC on ESPN 10 headliner, which takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex and will be simulcast on ESPN and ESPN+.

Dana White sounds off on ‘bullsh*t’ media stories regarding Conor McGregor and UFC 249

Dana White made it a point to set the record straight.

If there’s one thing guaranteed to light a fuse under UFC president Dana White, it’s “the media.” That was the case again Friday, and this time it had to do with [autotag]Conor McGregor[/autotag].

Speaking to reporters at the UFC Apex, White clarified remarks he recently made about McGregor’s potential involvement in UFC 249.

“The bullsh*t that I have read this week. I started scrolling through: ‘Dana White rips Conor McGregor.’ What? When did I f*cking rip Conor McGregor?” White said. “The media is so full of sh*t. And the f*cking headlines are such f*cking bullsh*t. You literally can’t believe anything you read.”

White’s anger stems from how his words were interpreted in subsequent media reports after he appeared on ESPN’s “First Take.” When asked on the show about McGregor’s status in the wake of his surprise retirement announcement, White indicated the former UFC two-division champion is unhappy with the fact that he hasn’t been granted a fight against interim champ Justin Gaethje, who earned a shot at champion Khabib Nurmagomedov after beating Tony Ferguson at UFC 249.

“(McGregor) wants to fight Gaethje. Gaethje just won to get the fight with (champion) Khabib,” White said on “First Take.” “He just beat Tony Ferguson. Conor had the opportunity to slide into that spot if Khabib or Tony fell out. He came back and said, ‘I’m not a replacement fighter. I’m not going to do it.’ He would be in that position now if he took the fight. He didn’t, Gaethje did, so Gaethje gets it.”

[lawrence-related id=525765,525466,525360]

Multiple media outlets took those remarks as a slight against McGregor. However, White clarified Friday that McGregor’s agreement to step into the UFC 249 headliner was “long before the fight every fell out” between Nurmagomedov and Ferguson. It applied to the pre-coronavirus pandemic version of the event scheduled for April 18 in front of fans in Brooklyn, N.Y. – not May 9, when UFC 249 ultimately took place behind closed doors in Jacksonville, Fla.

“Never did Conor turn down a last-minute fight,” White said. “He told us way before that, that he was out of the fight, and we never even asked him again.”

Therein lies the confusion, which White didn’t specify on “First Take” and led to the stories written that had White fired up.

“All these idiots start writing stories that I ripped him and that I said he wouldn’t take the fight and everything else. It’s all bullsh*t. Absolute f*cking bullsh*t,” White said. “And the only thing that was stupider than the f*cking stories they wrote was the headlines that they put on it. It’s f*cking unbelievable. You literally cannot believe anything you read.”

‘Hard nips’? Listen to Jessica Eye break the ice with Cynthia Calvillo during their faceoff

LOL nothing to see here.

Was it cold this morning at the UFC Apex? According to [autotag]Jessica Eye[/autotag], it was.

When Eye stepped up to face off with [autotag]Cynthia Calvillo[/autotag] ahead of their UFC on ESPN 10 headliner, she had a thought on her mind that she shared with her opponent, which led to a good laugh.
