Bryce Mitchell doubts UFC Oklahoma City fight happens, but he’ll stay ready for it

Bryce Mitchell expects his fight with Charles Rosa to fall through because of the coronavirus outbreak, but he’s still training hard just in case.

[autotag]Bryce Mitchell[/autotag] doesn’t like his chances of competing on May 2.

Mitchell (12-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) is scheduled to face Charles Rosa at UFC on ESPN+ 32 in Oklahoma City, but because of the coronavirus outbreak, he doesn’t think it’s likely the fight happens as planned.

“You know, if there were bets to be placed on it, I’d probably bet it wasn’t going to happen,” Mitchell told MMA Junkie. “If I had to be honest with you, it’s probably not going to happen and if it does, they might not do my fight, like the prelim fight. They might just do the main event or something.

“I doubt (it), but I’m going to train like I’m scared that another man is going to try and kill me, and when I’m in that mindset – somebody’s trying to kill me – and I gotta be in good shape, I’m going to be in good shape, and I’m going to train just like I’m fighting somebody on that date.”

Mitchell’s fight with Rosa started coming together on social media, when Rosa respectively called him out. Mitchell was happy to oblige.

“My manager runs my Twitter, and he was telling me this dude was calling me out and he said, ‘I’m going to agree to fight him for you,'” Mitchell said. “I said, ‘Yeah, that’s fine, especially if he’s calling me out. That would be great.’ And so we agreed to it on Twitter.

“I said, ‘All right, I’ll fight him, and I’ll try and shut him up.'”

Rosa returned from a more than two-year layoff last October, scoring a first-round submission over Manny Bermudez. Prior to his return, Rosa competed in April 2017 before Mitchell even joined “The Ultimate Fighter.”

So Mitchell admits that he wasn’t too familiar with Rosa.

“I think I’ve heard the name before, but I’ve never done any film study,” Mitchell said. “Never even seen him fight before. I’ve done some film study and seen who he is since then.

“There’s a very good chance it could go to the ground, and I see me winning.”

Mitchell was a breakout star in 2019, capping things off with a “Submission of the Year” over Matt Sayles at UFC on ESPN 7, scoring only the second twister in UFC history. He’s taken relatively long breaks in between fights, but there’s a reason for that.

Mitchell wants to make sure he’s a much more refined version of himself the next time out, a formula that has worked for the undefeated Arkansas native.

“It takes time to improve,” Mitchell said. “If you could instantly improve then anybody can just instantly jump up off their couch and get good at MMA, but it takes time. And so, I want time between fights to progress and another reason is, I have to put on a lot of weight. I have to put on a lot of muscle because that weight cut takes the muscle and the weight off of me, so I don’t want to turnaround and fight in two months.”

That being said, if Mitchell’s fight on May 2 does end up getting postponed, it won’t be too much of an issue for him personally.

“With this coronavirus, it’s going to be a long time before I fight, but I train all the time,” Mitchell said. “It’s not like I’m just taking off and not training. I’m training all the time, and I think the longer that goes by, I think the more prepared I am, and I’ll be prepared May 2. But if the fight gets postponed, I’ll be even more prepared.”

Menifield stayed unbeaten in June 2019 when he stopped Paul Craig in the first round at UFC on ESPN 3. The promotion announced the news in a tweet Tuesday.

Hall has only competed twice since December 2016. In his most recent outing in July, Hall defeated contender Darren Elkins by unanimous decision. Prior to that victory, Hall picked up wins over B.J. Penn, Gray Maynard and Artem Lobov.

Since his most recent bout, Hall expressed his frustration with opponents. Hall named names and cited a handful of ranked contenders who turned him down.

As for Lamas (19-8 MMA, 10-6 UFC), the 37-year-old fighter has dropped three of his past four. After he defeated Darren Elkins in November 2018, Lamas was knocked out by Calvin Kattar at UFC 238 in June. Shortly after the bout, Lamas revealed he broke his jaw in three places.

[autotag]Philipe Lins[/autotag] won a PFL championship in 2018. Now the Brazilian big man sets his sights on UFC gold.

Lins (14-3 MMA, 0-0 UFC) has signed with the UFC and is booked for a May debut vs. former heavyweight champion [autotag]Andrei Arlovski[/autotag] at UFC Oklahoma City.

The promotion announced both bookings through The Oklahoman on Thursday.

Although Lins won the 2018 PFL Championship and the $1 million that came from it, he withdrew from the 2019 season due to an apparent injury. Prior to his undefeated four-fight stint with PFL, Lins competed in Bellator from 2014-2017. During his Bellator tenure, Lins went 3-3.

As for Arlovski (28-19 MMA, 17-10 UFC), “The Pitbull” has struggled as of late, going 1-4 with one no contest in his most recent six fights. Arlovski’s most recent bout came in November, when he was knocked out by surging Surinamese heavyweight Jairzinho Rozenstruik.

A five-round middleweight fight pinning former UFC champ [autotag]Chris Weidman[/autotag] against top contender [autotag]Jack Hermansson[/autotag] has been verbally agreed to, a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed to MMA Junkie on Thursday.

The person asked to remain anonymous as the bout is not set and the promotion has yet to make an announcement. The news was first reported by ESPN.

UFC Oklahoma City takes place Saturday, May 2 at Chesapeake Energy Arena. The event does not have an official numerical designation, though it is expected to stream on ESPN+.

Claudia Gadelha gets wish, meets Marina Rodriguez at UFC Oklahoma City

A strawweight bout between Claudia Gadelha and Marina Rodriguez is the latest addition to May’s UFC Oklahoma City lineup.

Not long after telling MMA Junkie she wanted the fight, [autotag]Claudia Gadelha[/autotag] got her wish for a matchup with [autotag]Marina Rodriguez[/autotag], which is the latest addition to May’s UFC Oklahoma City lineup.

UFC officials announced on Wednesday the bout between Gadelha (17-4 MMA, 6-4 UFC) and Rodriguez (13-0-2 MMA, 2-0-2 UFC).

UFC Oklahoma City takes place May 2 at Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma. The main card streams on ESPN+ following prelims expected on ESPN.

Gadelha, No. 6 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie MMA strawweight rankings, was supposed to fight Alexa Grasso at UFC 246 in January, but the fight was called off on weigh-in day when Grasso missed weight by 5.5 pounds. She hoped for a quick turnaround, but will have to wait until May to build off the momentum of her decision win over Randa Markos at UFC 239.

No. 12-ranked Rodriguez will get the chance to make a leap up the rankings when she takes on a former title challenger. She’s unbeaten four fights into her octagon tenure, but that includes the statistical oddity two draws, the latest of which came against Cynthia Calvillo at UFC on ESPN 7 in December.

The latest UFC Oklahoma City card now includes:

  • Sarah Alpar vs. Duda Santana
  • Claudia Gadelha vs. Marina Rodriguez
