Erin Blanchfield aims to shake slow starts, explains Alexa Grasso callout at UFC Fight Night 246

Erin Blanchfield already holds wins over two former UFC champions… Will she make it three?

EDMONTON, Alberta, Canada – UFC Fight Night 246 marked a big moment for [autotag]Erin Blanchfield[/autotag], as she defeated former champion Rose Namajunas by unanimous decision.

The five-round co-main event took place Saturday at Rogers Place and propelled Blanchfield (13-2 MMA, 7-1 UFC) one step further toward getting her first UFC title opportunity.

It didn’t come without struggle, however. Namajunas (13-7 MMA, 11-6 UFC) puzzled Blanchfield with her striking in the first two rounds before Blanchfield swung the momentum to take the final three rounds.

“It was a super tough fight,” Blanchfield told MMA Junkie and other reporters at a post-fight news conference. “I feel like I won the last three rounds, and we dropped the first two. I think it was a really good experience.” … I know I always have that in myself. I wish I would stop dropping those first one or two rounds. But I knew if I found my timing with that takedown again, and I knew it was my fight.”

While there’s still much to improve on, Blanchfield said she wants to make sure another big matchup is next. Given that a title fight is likely out of reach with Manon Fiorot waiting in the wings, Blanchfield called for the next best option: [autotag]Alexa Grasso[/autotag] (16-4-1 MMA, 8-4-1 UFC), the woman who held the belt prior to the current champion Valentina Shevchenko.

“I think she already said something that she would love to take that fight, so I think it’s going to happen,” Blanchfield said. “… She’s another great boxer just like Rose is. I could see it being similar. … I feel like all my fights that I’ve had have led me up to that point. Fighting against these levels of opponents will really set me up.

“I don’t want to fight people that are not necessarily going to ever be champs themselves. I feel like that’s not going to give me the experience I need. That’s why I called someone out, someone like Alexa.”

Brandon Moreno delighted with UFC Fight Night 246 performance: ‘All the pieces were in the right place’

Former UFC champion Brandon Moreno reviews his win over Amir Albazi at Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 246.

EDMONTON, Alberta, Canada – [autotag]Brandon Moreno[/autotag] is more than satisfied with how things went down in his return to MMA competition.

Moreno, who took a break from MMA earlier this year citing fatigue, made his comeback this Saturday in the main event of UFC Fight Night 246, where he defeated top contender Amir Albazi. Moreno (22-8-2 MMA, 10-5-2 UFC) put on a boxing clinic, and dominated Albazi (17-2 MMA, 5-1 UFC) to win a unanimous decision.

For Moreno, things couldn’t have gone any better.

“What can I say? I feel just amazing,” Moreno said at the UFC Fight Night 246 post-fight press conference. “All the vibes, all the environment around my training camp was on point. It was just perfect. I wanted to show that in my performance tonight, and I feel I did it.

“I felt so connected, and I felt all the pieces were in the right place. It was a dominant performance, and this is the kind of performance I know I’m able to do in my next fights.”

The victory over Albazi snapped a two-fight losing streak for Moreno. Now on the win column, the Mexican star wants to recover what he lost in 2023 – the UFC flyweight title. He knows the division is a bit complicated at the moment, which is why he’s fine taking another fight if a title shot doesn’t come his way next.

“I don’t know, man, hopefully (I get the title shot),” Moreno said. “I have to be honest with myself, maybe I have to fight one more time before the title, but I don’t know what the UFC is thinking right now. Maybe they get so impressed with the performance tonight that they say, ‘Maybe he can get the title next.’ I know Royval is there. I know Kai Kara France is there trying to get their opportunity for the title next. I don’t know. I’ll be ready for whatever.”

UFC Fight Night 246 results: Brandon Moreno styles on Amir Albazi in stellar shutout performance

Former champ Brandon Moreno turned in an impressive performance to return to the win column in the UFC Fight Night 246 main event.

Former UFC flyweight champion [autotag]Brandon Moreno[/autotag] returned to the win column with a stellar performance against Amir Albazi.

The flyweight bout was the UFC Fight Night 246 main event at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Moreno (22-8-2 MMA, 10-5-2 UFC) styled on Albazi (17-2 MMA, 5-1 UFC) over the 25-minute fight, earning unanimous scores of 49-46, 50-45 and 50-45.

The fight started with a measured pace, with both fighters working behind jabs. Moreno’s primary weapon was the left hand, which set up the occasional combination. Albazi looked for a few leg kicks in his offense but was outstruck by the former champion in the opening round.

Moreno found success early in Round 2 with a solid left head kick that wobbled Albazi. After quickly getting up from a takedown, Moreno continued to lead the dance with effective striking on the feet, stumbling Albazi with a punch in the last minute.

With Albazi bruised and bloodied, Moreno poured on the pressure early in Round 3, getting a bit sloppy at times as he tried to create a big moment. Albazi found a home for a few solid punches, but Moreno quickly settled back in and continued to lead the fight.

Albazi’s corner implored their fighter to ramp up the aggressiveness heading into the championship rounds. That’s easier said than done against Moreno, who was loose and flowing with his offense.

In Round 4, Albazi did let his hands go more, but Moreno was more than willing to quickly return fire as he maintained control of the center of the octagon.

Albazi entered the final round needing a finish, but he was met with an aggressive Moreno, who came out fighting like he was the one down on the scorecards.

Shortly after an eye poke to Moreno caused a brief pause in the action, the former champ cracked Albazi with a big punch. The Canadian crowd responded with chants for Moreno.

The Mexico-born fighter wasn’t done yet, though.

He stayed on the hunt, cracking Albazi with more punches, and even attempted a rolling thunder kick in the closing seconds to end the fight with flair.

The result ended a two-fight skid for Moreno, as he ended up on the wrong end of a pair of split decisions against Alexandre Pantoja in a title fight at UFC 290 and Brandon Royval in a February main event.

During his post-fight interview, Moreno expressed his desire to dive into a full plate of food, but more importantly, regain his flyweight title and once again rule the 125-pound division.

For Albazi, his return to action for the first time since last June did not go his way, as he struggled to find momentum. As a result, his six-fight winning streak comes to an end with just his second loss as a pro.

UFC Fight Night 246 results: Erin Blanchfield rallies to beat Rose Namajunas, calls out Alexa Grasso

After a rough first two rounds, Erin Blanchfield turned things around to beat Rose Namajunas at UFC Edmonton.

[autotag]Erin Blanchfield[/autotag] turned up the volume, aggression and damage just in time to get the victory.

After a lackadaisical opening two rounds, Blanchfield (13-2 MMA, 7-1 UFC) rallied in the final three of the UFC Fight Night 246 co-main event Saturday to defeat former strawweight champion [autotag]Rose Namajunas[/autotag] (13-7 MMA, 11-6 UFC) by unanimous decision (48-47, 48-47, 48-47). The women’s flyweight bout was the co-main event at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Namajunas puzzled Blanchfield with footwork, jabs, and movement in the first 10 minutes. Blanchfield appeared the much slower fighter and seemed to be stuck on a similar loop as to the unsuccessful game plan execution that transpired in her loss to Manon Fiorot in March.

Blanchfield began to come alive in Round 3, however, when she took Namajunas down and controlled her. In Round 4, Blanchfield’s striking found its home as Namajunas appeared to slow in volume and attack of her own.

Round 5, Blanchfield’s corner lit a fire under its fighter and she came out swinging with full aggression. She took Namajunas down and entered the crucifix position. Namajunas defended well, but ended up in a non-dominant position for the remainder of the fight.

When the dust settled, Blanchfield had swept the judges. She was emotional on the microphone, but still issued a challenge to former champion Alexa Grasso, who she’d like to fight next.

Blanchfield bounces back from her first UFC loss, which came against Fiorot in March. The defeat was a fairly lopsided unanimous decision. Prior to that bump in the road, Blanchfield racked up wins over Sarah Alpar, Miranda Maverick, JJ Aldrich, Molly McCann, Jessica Andrade and Taila Santos.

As for Namajunas, her two-fight winning streak is snapped. She moves to 2-2 since moving to flyweight in 2023.
