UFC Fight Night 211 video: Daniel Santos rallies, knocks out John Castaneda with knee

An early Fight of the Night candidate at UFC Fight Night 211 was ended with a crushing knee to the body from Daniel Santos.

In what was setting up to be an early lock for Fight of the Night at UFC Fight Night 211, Daniel Santos ended the bout in devastating fashion.

It wasn’t an easy win for Santos (10-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) on Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, but it’s one he is proud of. John Castaneda put Santos in trouble early with sharp strikes on the feet, and heavy ground and pound. The action was so much in favor of Castaneda (19-6 MMA, 2-2 UFC), the referee began to step in closer to monitor the action.

Somehow, Santos rallied.

Not only did Santos quickly shift the momentum of the bout, he caused the aggressive Castaneda to go into retreat mode. In the second round, Santos unleashed a furious combination of punches and landed a crushing knee against the fence that dropped Castaneda for the stoppage at 4:28.

Check out video of the finish below (via Twitter):

Santos, 27, rebounds from a unanimous decision loss to Julio Arce in his promotional debut at UFC 273 in April. During his post-fight interview, he said he would fight again next week, but he has a child on the way so he will take some time to be with his family.

Although he made it an interesting bout, Castaneda walks away with the second loss of his four-fight UFC run. Castaneda entered Saturday’s fight on the heels of back-to-back stoppage wins over Eddie Wineland and Miles Johns.

Maxim Grishin vs. Philipe Lins scratched from UFC Fight Night 211

Just hours before they were set to make their walk to the cage, a pair of light heavyweights will have to wait.

Just hours before they were set to make their walk to the cage, a pair of light heavyweights will have to wait.

The fight between [autotag]Maxim Grishin[/autotag] (32-9-2 MMA, 2-2 UFC) and [autotag]Philipe Lins[/autotag] (15-5 MMA, 1-2 UFC) has been scratched at Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 211 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. UFC officials announced the cancellation during the broadcast on ESPN+.

UFC play-by-play voice Jon Anik didn’t say which fighter was unable to fight, though reportedly it was Lins who was not cleared. Anik said the fight was moved from the prelims to the main card earlier Saturday specifically to give the affected fighter additional time to work out his issue. Ultimately, that didn’t happen, and the fight was called off.

The announcement was made four fights into the event, which is taking place under an on-site media blackout – save for broadcast partner ESPN – imposed by the UFC earlier this week. No reason was given for media members allowed to be in attendance at media day and weigh-ins, but not the fights.

It was the second fight to be pulled from the card at the 11th hour. Friday, a women’s strawweight bout between Jessica Penne and Tabatha Ricci was scrapped just before the weigh-ins due to a Penne illness.

Grishin outworked William Knight for a decision win in February. He was set to come back against Jailton Almeida in May, but had to pull out. Lins snapped a two-fight skiid in April with a decision win over Marcin Prachnio, which was his first victory since he won the PFL’s heavyweight season in 2018.

UFC Fight Night 211 video: Brendan Allen taps Krzysztof Jotko in first with rear-naked choke

Brendan Allen kept the UFC Fight Night 211 first-round finishes going by submitting Krzysztof Jotko.

First-round finishes were in abundance early at UFC Fight Night 211, and [autotag]Brendan Allen[/autotag] wanted a piece of the action.

In what was a bout largely spent on the ground battling for position and searching for submission attempts, Allen (20-5 MMA, 8-2 UFC) flashed his brilliant BJJ skills, and smoothly transitioned to the back to lock in a rear-naked choke late in the first round that Krzysztof Jotko couldn’t escape.

At 4:17, Jotko (24-6 MMA, 11-6 UFC) tapped from the submission, marking the third-straight first-round finish on the prelims at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Check out video of the submission below (via Twitter):

After the win, Allen called for a matchup against Brazil’s Andre Muniz at the upcoming UFC 283 pay-per-view event in Rio, or a rematch against Anthony Hernandez, which took place before both were in the UFC in 2018.

With Saturday’s win, Allen stretches his current win streak two three, entering on the heels of a rear-naked choke win against Sam Alvey and a unanimous decision win over Jacob Malkoun.

Jotko’s loss halts the momentum of back-to-back wins over Misha Cirkunov and Gerald Meerschaert.

UFC Fight Night 211 video: Chelsea Chandler smashes Julija Stoliarenko for first-round debut TKO

Chelsea Chandler picks up a first-round TKO victory in her promotional debut at UFC Fight Night 211.

Smashing your opponent for a TKO stoppage in your debut would be an ideal scenario for any UFC fighter.

That’s exactly what [autotag]Chelsea Chandler[/autotag] did to Julija Stoliarenko on the prelims of Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 211. The event took place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, and streamed on ESPN+.

Chandler (5-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) met some early adversity from Stoliarenko(10-7-1 MMA, 1-5 UFC), having to fight through being put on her back and protecting her limbs from armbar attempts.

In the second half of the first round, Chandler began to turn things in her favor, putting together hard punches and eventually finding her way to full mount where she would unleash vicious ground and pound until the referee stopped the contest at 4:15.

Check out video of the finish below (via Twitter):

Chandler’s victorious UFC debut marked her fifth-straight win, and her second of 2022 after a unanimous decision win over Courtney King at Invicta FC 47 in May.

Stoliarenko’s momentum from a first-round armbar of Jessica-Rose Clark was halted on Saturday, as she exits with the fifth UFC loss of her career.

UFC Fight Night 211 video: Guido Cannetti quickly taps Randy Costa with hookless rear-naked choke

The 42-year-old bantamweight Guido Cannetti needed just over a minute to finish Randy Costa at UFC Fight Night 211.

The opening bout of UFC Fight Night 211 ended in just over a minute.

[autotag]Guido Cannetti[/autotag] caught fellow bantamweight Randy Costa with a rear-naked choke, but his squeeze was so tight that he didn’t worry about hooking in his legs, as typically seen with the submission technique.

At 1:04, Costa (6-4 MMA, 2-4 UFC) tapped from the tight squeeze, and the celebration for the 42-year-old Cannetti (10-6 MMA, 4-5 UFC) was on.

Watch video of the submission below (via Twitter):

Cannetti makes it two-straight first-round finishes with tonight’s result. He previously defeated Kris Moutinho by TKO from a series of punches just over two minutes into their UFC Fight Night 203 bout in March.

On the other side, Costa, 28, drops his third result in a row, entering on a two-fight skid. All three losses during this stretch have come by stoppage.

The UFC is back on its home turf after a week off, and a pair of women’s strawweight contenders headline the card.

UFC Fight Night 211 takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The card streams on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, [autotag]Mackenzie Dern[/autotag] (12-2 MMA, 7-2 UFC) takes on [autotag]Yan Xiaonan[/autotag] (15-3 MMA, 6-2 UFC) at 115 pounds. Dern is a -240 favorite at Tipico Sportsbook; the comeback on Xiaonan is +180. Our 11 editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers have Dern as one of four unanimous picks on the main card at 11-0.

The co-main event features [autotag]Randy Brown[/autotag] (15-4 MMA, 9-4 UFC) vs. [autotag]Francisco Trinaldo[/autotag] (28-8 MMA, 18-7 UFC) at welterweight. Brown is a -350 favorite, but he’s not unanimous. One of our pickers is taking Trinaldo to pull off the upset.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Raoni Barcelos[/autotag] (16-3 MMA, 5-2 UFC) meets [autotag]Trevin Jones[/autotag] (13-8 MMA, 1-2 UFC) in a bantamweight bout. Barcelos is a -260 favorite and one of our four unanimous picks.

UFC newcomer [autotag]Don Shainis[/autotag] (12-3 MMA, 0-0 UFC) will have a tough task on his hands for his promotional debut when he meets [autotag]Sodiq Yusuff[/autotag] (12-2 MMA, 5-1 UFC) at featherweight. Yusuff is the biggest favorite on the card at 11-1, and not surprisingly is a unanimous pick from our staff members.

Our fourth unanimous nod is [autotag]John Castaneda[/autotag] (19-5 MMA, 2-1 UFC) in his fight against [autotag]Daniel Santos[/autotag] (9-2 MMA, 0-1 UFC), which will take place at a contracted 140-pound catchweight. Castaneda is the smallest favorite on the man card at -190, but he pitched an 11-0 shutout in the picks.

And to open the main card, we have our most contentious bout from a picks standpoint. [autotag]Viacheslav Borshchev[/autotag] (6-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) takes on [autotag]Mike Davis[/autotag] (9-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC) at lightweight. Davis is a 2-1 favorite at the betting window and has a big 8-3 lead in the picks.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Dern (77 percent), Brown (77 percent), Barcelos (80 percent), Yusuff (90 percent), Castaneda (76 percent) and Davis (66 percent) are the choices.

Check out all the picks above.
