UFC Fight Night 195 video: Jim Miller climbs all-time wins list with first KO since UFC 200

Jim Miller recorded his 22nd UFC victory on Saturday with a brutal knockout of Erick Gonzalez at UFC Fight Night 195.

[autotag]Jim Miller[/autotag] continued his climb up the UFC’s all-time wins list Saturday with a brutal knockout of [autotag]Erick Gonzalez[/autotag] at UFC Fight Night 196.

Gonzalez (14-6 MMA, 0-1 UFC) entered his first octagon appearance at the biggest experience disadvantage in history. Miller (33-16 MMA, 22-15 UFC) was competing in his record 38th fight with the promotion, and it proved to be a difference in a second-round knockout victory.

The lightweight bout was part of the UFC Fight Night 195 main card at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. It streamed on ESPN+.

Gonzalez came out of the gate strong in the first round, getting in top position and hurting Miller with a couple of good punches. Miller showed his veteran savvy, though, tying up his opponent and slowing the action down through the first fight minutes.

Miller came unleashed early in the second round, though. In the first exchange, he connected with a hellacious left hand that instantly slumped Gonzalez to the canvas. The fight was stopped at the 0:14 mark of the round, giving Miller his first knockout since UFC 200 in July 2016.

The victory marked Miller’s 22nd triumphant performance in the octagon. That puts him into a tie for second most wins in UFC history behind Donald Cerrone (24).

“Old dog, new tricks,” Miller said in his post-fight interview with Michael Bisping. “Got the KO.”

‘Kind of crazy’ Loopy Godinez ready for history with record turnaround at UFC Fight Night 195

Loopy Godinez had no hesitation in accepting record turnaround at Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 195.

[autotag]Loopy Godinez[/autotag] is on the verge of making UFC history.

On Saturday at UFC Fight Night 195, the strawweight prospect will set a new modern-era UFC record for fewest days between octagon appearances.

Godinez (6-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) most recently fought this past Saturday at UFC Fight Night 194. Just three days after her “Performance of the Night” win over Silvana Gomez Juarez, Godinez accepted a short-notice fight against Luana Carolina. It’ll be seven days in between her fights. The current record is held by Khamzat Chimaev with 10 days in between fights.

Godinez feels more than prepared, despite the unique nature of her situation.

“I feel great,” Godinez told MMA Junkie in Spanish. “I’m very happy and amazing and I’m ready for Saturday. I train every day and I do sparring twice or once a week, so my body is used to this. What we saw on Saturday, the truth is that I train much harder than what I went through in the fight. I’m good and I’m extremely ready.”

Godinez planned to stick to 115 pounds, but for this bout she’s moving up a division to women’s flyweight to take on Brazil’s Carolina (7-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC). Godinez had no hesitation in taking the bout, and doesn’t promise this to be a one off at flyweight.

“I never know – I’m kind of crazy, so we’ll see,” Godinez said. “At 115 pounds there are many women that are very strong and I have a lot of competition there in the long run, so we’ll see. If they offer me something and depending on who it is and when it is, I leave that to my manager and the UFC and they’ll decide what I’ll do.”

Godinez came in light at Friday’s weigh-ins, registering at 121.5 pounds. Although there might be a weight disadvantage on paper for Godinez, the Mexican fighter doesn’t expect to be outmuscled against Carolina.

“I think we’re both right there,” Godinez said. “I’m very strong and I train with very heavy girls, girls who fight at 125 and 135 pounds. I’ve felt that weight on top of me and I’ve always been able to manage it. I’m ready.”

UFC Fight Night 195 video: Aspen Ladd makes weight without issue two weeks after scary incident

What a difference 10 pounds makes for Aspen Ladd.

LAS VEGAS – What a difference 10 pounds makes.

[autotag]Aspen Ladd[/autotag] made weight Friday morning at the UFC Fight Night 195 official weigh-ins, tipping the scale at 145 for her featherweight main event against Norma Dumont.

For Ladd, this weigh-ins experience was a 180-degree turn from just two weeks ago when she struggled with her cut down to bantamweight for her scheduled UFC Fight Night 193 bout with Macy Chiasson, which ultimately was canceled after Ladd registered one pound heavy. This time, there was no need to strip down, the wall block wasn’t needed, and her body didn’t shake uncontrollably while trying to register an official weight. This time, Ladd was the first fighter to step on the scale. And when she did, she hit her mark with ease.

[lawrence-related id=1304372,1295714]

It was a welcomed sight after the disturbing images from Oct. 1, which wasn’t the first time Ladd struggled badly to make 136. A similar situation unfolded in July 2019 for her UFC Fight Night 155 headliner against Germaine de Randamie as Ladd hit her mark even as she could barely hold herself up on the scale. She was TKO’d in 16 seconds the next day.

You can watch Ladd’s weigh-in from Friday in the tweeted video above.

Aspen Ladd not done at bantamweight but doesn’t see main event as reward: You think they called me first?

Aspen Ladd knows that not everyone supports her main event booking, but she thinks critics probably aren’t considering the full picture.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Aspen Ladd[/autotag] knows that not everyone supports her booking in the main event of UFC Fight Night 195, but she thinks many critics probably aren’t considering the full picture of her current situation.

When Norma Dumont (6-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) found herself in need of a new opponent for the contest, Ladd (9-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) doesn’t for one second believe she was the primary choice.

“We were the ones that were ready to take it,” Ladd told MMA Junkie at Wednesday’s media day at the UFC Apex. “I mean, you’ve got to use your brain a little bit there – a little bit of deductive reasoning. After the last one, you think they called me first? No, they called other people, and it’s a dangerous opponent on short notice. Nobody else took it. We did, so we get the opportunity.”

Ladd was scheduled to compete against Macy Chiasson two weeks ago but was unable to make weight for the matchup, officially registering 137 pounds in what seemed a clearly unhealthy manner as she stood on the scale shaking for an extended period of time. Chiasson ultimately elected not to take the fight.

Ladd doesn’t believe she’d make the same decision if the roles were reversed, but she insists she also doesn’t hold any ill will.

“I don’t blame the other fighter,” Ladd said. “I mean, in the reverse of the situation, I would have taken it, but that’s just because also she’s getting a fair chunk of my purse. But everybody reacts to things differently and makes her own decisions, and she chose not to fight – and that’s, as I said, her right.”

While it seemed after the weight miss that a move to featherweight was inevitable for Ladd, few assumed it would come just two weeks later, and much less in a main event. Ladd said her team had long discussed the idea of a move up to 145 pounds and was planning on it at some point in the future, but when the UFC asked her to step in as a replacement for Holly Holm, she certainly wasn’t going to say no.

“As soon as Holly fell out – and I don’t know who they called first, so I’m assuming they probably called other people, but Norma is a dangerous opponent – I didn’t know anything about her,” Ladd said. “I didn’t know it was five rounds. I didn’t know it was a main event. I just knew that Holly was out and the fight was ’45, and it was like, ‘All right, sweet. This feels kind of like fate. Let’s do it.”

[lawrence-related id=1295714]

While the scenes on the scale two weeks ago left many wondering if Ladd would be healthy for this fight, even at a higher weight class, the MMA Gold product insists there is no reason for concern.

“I’m not cutting weight to make this fight,” Ladd said. “I’ve been trying to get to ’35 for so long that you get pretty low, and I had not put on much weight by the time they called me for this one. So a couple of days of dieting and no, there’s no weight cut involved.”

Of course, the scale isn’t the only battle Ladd has in front of her this week – nor is fan perception. Dumont is a black belt in sanda and a brown belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and her frame is every bit that of a featherweight contender.

While she didn’t know much about Dumont when she accepted the fight, Ladd says she’s excited by the challenge now.

“She comes to bang,” Ladd said. “She throws hard, she throws down, and I think this is a potential ‘Fight of the Night.'”

Will it be redemption for Ladd? She doesn’t seem all that interested in turning the naysayers in her favor. Instead, Ladd simply wants to make a statement in his matchup and then welcomes what might come next, whether it be UFC women’s featherweight champion Amanda Nunes, or perhaps even welcoming potential addition Kayla Harrison to the UFC.

While she’s still not ready to rule out future bantamweight matchups, Ladd sees potential in a featherweight division that has been notoriously thin on names since its addition to the UFC.

“I don’t know, ’45 is very interesting because right now there’s not much substance, but I think they’re about to sign Kayla Harrison, or at least they are going to try to,” Ladd said. “She has her last fight with PFL, and I think they’re going to build the division around her. They want new blood and new faces, so I think over the next couple of years, featherweight, if that happens, will flush out pretty good.”
