Mick Maynard’s Shoes: What’s next for Marina Rodriguez after UFC Fight Night 194 win?

See whom Marina Rodriguez should fight next after her victory over Mackenzie Dern in the UFC Fight Night 194 headliner.

(ALSO SEE: Mick Maynard’s Shoes: What’s next for Mackenzie Dern after UFC Fight Night 194 loss?)

[autotag]Marina Rodriguez[/autotag] continued to build momentum as a true strawweight title contender Saturday when she defeated Mackenzie Dern in the UFC Fight Night 194 main event.

In a fight in which she was the betting underdog, Rodriguez (16-1-2 MMA, 5-1-2 UFC) turned in a mostly one-sided performance against grappling whiz Dern (11-2 MMA, 6-2 UFC) to earn a unanimous decision at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Not only did Rodriguez show her skills on the feet, but she survived some scary moments with Dern on the ground. She now has three consecutive wins and is line for a huge opportunity at 115 pounds.

The question, however, is what will that opportunity look like? Rodriguez already deferred the next title shot to Carla Esparza, and the strawweight title rematch between Rose Namajunas and Zhang Weili is just around the corner at UFC 268 on Nov. 6.

Mackenzie Dern reacts to UFC Fight Night 194 loss: ‘I have a lot to look back on and fix’

Mackenzie Dern releases statement following her decision loss to Marina Rodriguez at UFC Fight Night 194.

[autotag]Mackenzie Dern[/autotag] is keeping high spirits despite her most recent setback.

The women’s strawweight contender saw her four-fight winning streak come to an end with a decision defeat to Marina Rodriguez in Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 194 main event in Las Vegas.

Dern (11-2 MMA, 6-2 UFC) had good moments in the bout when she  threatened with her grappling, but her efforts weren’t enough to top the work Rodriguez did on the feet. The grappling standout sees the defeat as an important lesson and vows to comeback improved.

“Thank you everyone for all the support!,” Dern wrote on Instagram. “Yesterday wasn’t the result I was training for, but this fight is the biggest learning experience for me! Now I have a lot to look back on and fix to become a better fighter! For sure a submission would have been great but to have these rounds for me to work on is such a blessing! Congrats Marina for the win! I hope you guys enjoyed the fight and thanks @danawhite for the FOTN 💰 Thank you to my family, my team, my friends and everyone who continues to support me! Letssss gooo!”

Dern had been in the midst of a comeback from her first professional defeat. The 28-year-old had three first-round submission wins and three “Performance of the Night” bonuses in her previous four bouts. The loss to Rodriguez ws Dern’s second career defeat since turning to professional MMA in 2016.

Matheus Nicolau thinks he should be flyweight top 10 after win over Tim Elliott

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Matheus Nicolau[/autotag] beat Tim Elliott with a unanimous decision Saturday on the main card at UFC Fight Night 194 in Las Vegas.

Take a look inside the fight with Nicolau, who won for the fourth straight time and second straight time since returning to the UFC earlier this year.

James Krause: ‘I made a huge coaching error’ in Tim Elliott’s loss to Matheus Nicolau

Tim Elliott dropped a decision at UFC Fight Night 194 on Saturday, and his coach wants to take a big share of the blame.

[autotag]Tim Elliott[/autotag] dropped a decision at UFC Fight Night 194 on Saturday, and his coach wants to take a big share of the blame.

Elliott (17-12-1 MMA, 6-10 UFC) lost a unanimous decision to Matheus Nicolau (17-2-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) on the main card at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Nicolau won with 29-28 scores across the board.

The fight was close from a statistical standpoint. Nicolau won the overall striking battle 128-105 – though he landed at a 73 percent clip compared to just 41 percent for Elliott. Each fighter landed a takedown.

And while Elliott appeared to be in at least a little disbelief that Nicolau won with all three judges, those scores are consistent with the ones tracked by MMADecisions.com. All the media outlets tracked by that site had the fight 29-28 for Nicolau, as well.

But not long after the fight, Elliott’s head coach, UFC fighter [autotag]James Krause[/autotag], posted on Instagram that he takes responsibility for the setback, which snapped Elliott’s modest two-fight winning streak.

“I made a huge coaching error tonight that I’m sure is going to haunt me for some time to come,” Krause posted. “Going into the 3rd round I thought for 100% sure we took 1 and 2. Regardless of if that was true or not I should have pushed Tim to work up in the 3rd… and I didn’t.

“Win, lose, or draw I’m so proud of the improvements that Tim has made in the last year. His willingness to learn and be coached is what makes him so incredible. His lack of fear in competition is something we can all take and learn from to be one of the best entertainers in all of mma. I know I have learned so much from him over the years.

“I fucking hate losing but it’s part of the game. Regardless, this dude is my dog. We’ve been through worse losses than this one. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again… There’s only one @awkward_mma”

Nicolau was a 2-1 favorite in the fight. The win was the Brazilian’s fourth straight, and second in a row since returning to the UFC earlier this year after nearly three years outside the promotion.

The last time Elliott closed as that big of an underdog was when he fought 9-1 favorite Demetrious Johnson for the flyweight title in December 2016 after winning his shot at the belt by winning the Season 24 “Ultimate Fighter” tournament.

Marina Rodriguez says Joanna Jedrzejczyk shouldn’t be ranked: ‘She doesn’t fight anymore’

Marina Rodriguez isn’t interested in fighting Joanna Jedrzejczyk following her latest win at UFC Fight Night 194.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Marina Rodriguez[/autotag] wants to fight anyone ahead of her in the rankings … except Joanna Jedrzejczyk.

The UFC women’s strawweight contender wants to keep climbing the ladder at 115 pounds following her main event win over Mackenzie Dern at Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 194 in Las Vegas. Rodriguez (15-1-2 MMA, 5-1-2 UFC) outpointed Dern to win a unanimous decision and improve her winning streak to three.

Rodriguez made no secret she wants to fight for the title and go through anyone who gets her closer to that goal. But when asked about a potential matchup with former UFC champion Jedrzejczyk, the Brazilian discarded the idea.

“Sincerely – Joanna doesn’t want to fight me, so I don’t want to fight her because for me she shouldn’t be in the rankings,” Rodriguez told MMA Junkie at the UFC Fight Night 194 post-fight news conference. “She doesn’t fight anymore and needs to make space for the girls that are battling and fighting three times a year to earn a spot.

“It can be the Chinese fighter (Yan Xiaonan), whoever. I just prefer that it’s someone who’s in font of me, and then fight for the belt quick.”

[listicle id=1258475]

Jedrzejczyk hasn’t competed since an instant classic war with then-champion Zhang Weili at UFC 248 in March 2020. She lost the bout by split decision.

Rodriguez is open to fight for the title if the opportunity arises, but she understands Carla Esparza is likely next to take on the winner of the Rose Namajunas vs. Zhang title bout set for Nov. 6 at UFC 268.

“I’ll never deny a chance to fight for the title, but for me, Carla should be next and not Weili,” Rodriguez said. “But since the rematch is booked already with Rose and that’s happening, then if UFC gives me that opportunity, without a doubt I’m taking it. Sorry, Carla. I would prefer for (Esparza) to get the title shot, win the belt and then we can do the rematch, but it can’t take long. I can’t be waiting.”

UFC Fight Night 194 results: Marina Rodriguez survives grappling scares, outstrikes Mackenzie Dern

Marina Rodriguez defeats Mackenzie Dern in a unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night 194.

[autotag]Marina Rodriguez[/autotag] keeps climbing up the UFC women’s strawweight rankings.

The Brazilian beat highly touted grappler [autotag]Mackenzie Dern[/autotag] on Saturday at UFC Fight Night 194. Rodriguez (15-1-2 MMA, 5-1-2 UFC) went the distance with Dern (11-2 MMA, 6-2 UFC) and took 49-46 across the three judges’ scorecards.

The women’s strawweight bout was the UFC Fight Night 194 main event at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. It streamed on ESPN+.

Rodriguez had a great showing ini which she was able to showcase her respected striking skills and resilience on the ground.

Rodriguez put on a striking clinic against Dern and landed kicks and punches almost at will. She was in control for the majority of the fight, but did get tested in two rounds.

Rodriguez had plenty to handle in Round 2, when Dern was able to get hold of her after a failed judo throw. Dern ended up on bottom, but quickly reversed the position and threatened with several submissions. Rodriguez looked to be in trouble at several points, but managed to see the end of the round.

In Round 4, Rodriguez found herself on bottom after a wild scramble toward the end of the round. But Dern was unable to lock up any submissions with little time to work with.

Other than those two times on the canvas, Rodriguez shined on the feet and scored big with volume and precision. Dern was unable to have successful offense in the standup game, which was the story of the fight.

Rodriguez won for the third straight time on the heels of victories over Amanda Ribas and Michelle Waterson. The Brazilian has just one loss – a split decision to former UFC champion Carla Esparza.

Dern, who was mounting an impressive comeback from her first professional defeat, saw a four-fight winning streak come to an end. The jiu-jitsu standout had three first-round submission wins in her previous four bouts.
