UFC Fight Night 185 results: Yana Kunitskaya splits open Ketlen Vieira, wins unanimous decision

Yana Kunitskaya was the underdog heading into UFC Fight Night 185 but pulled off a significant win.

[autotag]Yana Kunitskaya[/autotag] made the most of her control at UFC Fight Night 185.

When she fought Ketlen Vieira on Saturday, Kunitskaya (14-5 MMA, 4-2 UFC) won a unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28), despite having almost four minutes less control time than her opponent. Vieira (11-2 MMA, 5-2 UFC) controlled much of the fight, but Kunitskaya landed the damage that swayed the judges in her favor.

The women’s bantamweight bout was the UFC Fight Night 185 co-main event at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. It streamed on ESPN+.

The opening round quickly saw the fighters enter the clinch. Vieira initiated against the fence. After a Kunitskaya reversal, Vieira dragged her to the ground. From there, Vieira slowly worked toward a more dominant position, which she never obtained before the round ended.

For the entirety of Round 2, Kunitskaya was in control. In the opening minute, Kunitskaya secured a takedown. Vieira would get up briefly, but Kunitskaya dragged her back down to the mat and landed ground-and-pound.

Although she entered Round 3 with momentum, Kunitskaya was swiftly planted to the mat by a Vieira takedown. From half guard, Vieira finally shifted into mount with three minutes remaining. Vieira worked to Kunitskaya’s back.

As Vieira worked for submissions, Kunitskaya landed a series of blind punches before she reversed position. On top, Kunitskaya landed heavy elbows, which sliced Vieira’s head open.

Kunitskaya entered the fight as an underdog and proved the oddsmakers wrong. The victory turns a standalone win into a winning streak for Kunitskaya. She has won four of her most recent five outings. The stretch also includes wins over Lina Lansberg, Marion Reneau, and Julija Stoliarenko.

As for Vieira, the loss sets her back for the second time in three fights. Prior to a unanimous decision win over Sijara Eubanks, Vieira was knocked out by Irene Aldana.

Phil Hawes jokes about COVID-19 with Michael Bisping after eking out UFC Fight Night 185 win

Phil Hawes would like a big opportunity next – and if that means Chris Weidman or Uriah Hall contracting COVID-19, so be it?

[autotag]Phil Hawes[/autotag] would like a big opportunity coming out of UFC Fight Night 185 – and if that means someone contracting COVID-19 then so be it.

Hawes survived a third-round surge from Nassourdine Imavov to escape with a majority-decision win in their middleweight bout Saturday at the UFC Apex. In speaking about what he’d like next during his post-fight interview with Michael Bisping, Hawes expressed a desire to fill in for either Chris Weidman or Uriah Hall should one of them drop out of their UFC 261 fight April 24.

“I know Weidman and Uriah – what’s his name? – Hall, they’re having that thing,” Hawes said. “So hopefully, maybe someone gets COVID or something. Slide me up in there, whenever that is.”

In response, Bisping made light of the remark.

“Hoping people get COVID so you get a fight,” Bisping said with a laugh. “I like your style.”

Weidman’s already overcome a case of COVID-19.

Weidman, a former UFC middleweight champion, and Hall originally were booked to meet last week at UFC 258, but the fight was pushed back after Weidman tested positive for the coronavirus in January. In an interview with Submission Radio earlier this month, Weidman detailed the severity of his case of the disease responsible for nearly half-a-million deaths in the U.S.

“First couple of days definitely sucked pretty bad,” Weidman said. “For about three days I had a fever, body aches, bad headache, and it just kind of sucked. And then after that, I just kind of felt tired. I would get these headaches randomly. Yeah, so I had to take about two weeks off training, and now I feel good and getting back in shape. … “I also lost 12 pounds. I was eating soups and stuff. My appetite wasn’t that great, and I ended up losing 12 pounds throughout the process.”

Hawes, 32, a 2020 “Dana White’s Contender Series” alum, is on a six-fight winning streak and off to a 2-0 start with the UFC after Saturday night. He won his promotional debut last October with an 18-second knockout of Jacob Malkoun at UFC 254.

UFC Fight Night 185 video: Chris Daukaus runs through Aleksei Oleinik for first-round finish

[autotag]Chris Daukaus[/autotag] thwarted [autotag]Aleksei Oleinik[/autotag]’s grappling attempts at UFC Fight Night 185, and it set up a quick win for him.

Daukaus (11-3 MMA, 3-0 UFC) earned a third consecutive first-round finish to start his UFC tenure Saturday when he landed heavy shots on Oleinik (59-15-1 MMA, 8-6 UFC) to force a standing TKO stoppage.

The Philadelphia-based police officer had talked prior to the event about putting together a run that would warrant a full-time move to fighting, and he took another step forward with the big win in the heavyweight bout at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Check out the replay below (via Twitter):

After the fight, Daukaus said he was proud of his performance and is looking to take another step forward next.

“Aleksei is a legend, and he showed why he’s a legend,” Daukaus said in his post-fight interview with Michael Bisping. “I want to fight whoever is in front of me. Everyone is going to get it, so it doesn’t matter to me.”

UFC Fight Night 185 results: Tom Aspinall hands Andrei Arlovski second submission loss of career

Tom Aspinall continues to show why he might be the next big thing at heavyweight.

[autotag]Tom Aspinall[/autotag] continues to show why he might be the next big thing at heavyweight.

At UFC Fight Night 185 on Saturday, Aspinall defeated former UFC heavyweight champion [autotag]Andrei Arlovski[/autotag] by submission with a rear-naked choke at 1:09 of the second round.

The heavyweight bout opened up the UFC Fight Night 185 main card at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. It streamed on ESPN+.

Early in Round 1, Arlovski (30-20 MMA, 19-14 UFC) appeared to be in trouble. With his back up against the fence, Arlovski absorbed dozens of Aspinall (10-2 MMA, 3-0 UFC) punches to the head and body. Somehow he survived and fought out the second half of Round 1.

In Round 2, Aspinall switched it up. He charged and tackled Arlovski to the mat against the fence. Aspinall quickly moved to the back where he locked in a rear-naked choke. Within seconds, Arlovski tapped and the fight was over.

With the victory, Aspinall extends his overall winning streak to six. Prior to UFC Fight Night 185, Aspinall had picked up quick UFC wins by TKO over Alan Baudot and Jake Collier.

As for Arlovski, the loss snaps a two-fight winning streak. The 42-year-old has lost three out of his most recent six outings. This was just the second by submission in his 22-year career.
