UFC’s Bryce Mitchell self-imposes ‘own concussion protocol’ after knockout loss to Josh Emmett

UFC featherweight Bryce Mitchell is taking matters into his own hands after suffering his first-career knockout in brutal fashion.

[autotag]Bryce Mitchell[/autotag] is taking matters into his own hands after suffering his first-career knockout.

Mitchell (16-2 MMA, 7-2 UFC) was on the receiving end of a brutal right hand from Josh Emmett, who punched out his lights last month at UFC 296. The immediate aftermath was scary as “Thug Nasty” convulsed while lying on the canvas.

As a result, Mitchell has decided to stay away from any form of contact and focus on his personal life until mid-2024.

“I’m on my own concussion protocol,” Mitchell told ESPN. “I’m consulting with my coaches, too, and we’re basically just saying, ‘Don’t spar for six months or something.’ I’ve got to build this house and have this kid, but then I’m right into my next training camp after that. The good thing is that I don’t have to rush into it.”

Mitchell is at peace with the outcome and insists he’d take another short-notice opportunity if the pay was worth it. It’s everyone around him who made coping with the loss that much harder just by seeing their reactions.

“The worst part is dealing with everybody afterwards because they all thought I was dead,” Mitchell said. “It’s just terrible. Literally everybody that I knew was crying and just sad. On the bright side, that was the easiest fight for me. I’ve never had a fight where I’ve come out feeling so great.

“I just woke up in the ambulance and could barely remember what happened. There’s no pain. I’m telling you, it was that quick. There was no pain or anything, but everybody was crying, and they thought I was dead. I’m not exaggerating.”

Mitchell is not happy with how the medical staff handled the situation when he was knocked out. He thinks he should have been escorted out of the arena right away.

“When a fighter gets knocked out that bad – I was watching the fight back for film study. When I saw how bad the knockout was, I watched the whole thing, and I watched what they did with me afterward, and I was talking afterward, and I was shaking hands and stumbling around,” Mitchell said. “Dude, they (needed) to immediately escort me out of there. I really do think that needs to be a protocol but because from my standpoint, I can’t remember anything.

“I would much rather – say I get knocked out again. I’d much rather them escort me out of there as soon as I’m up on my feet, and I mean up under the armpits and not even talk to me or anything. Just get me out of there as quickly as possible. … They did escort me out eventually, but I don’t even think they should even talk to me in that cage because I was probably arguing with them telling them I’m fine and can walk, I don’t even know what I was saying. They (needed) to get me out of the cage. I’m glad that they did, and that is how they need to do it because, as fighters, they can stumble and fall and hurt their head even worse.”

Ben Askren urges Tony Ferguson to retire after UFC 296: ‘Paddy Pimblett does not seem to be that good’

Ben Askren thinks losing to Paddy Pimblett should signal the end for Tony Ferguson.

[autotag]Ben Askren[/autotag] thinks losing to [autotag]Paddy Pimblett[/autotag] should signal the end for [autotag]Tony Ferguson[/autotag].

Ferguson (25-10 MMA, 15-8 UFC) suffered yet another loss when he was dominated by Pimblett at UFC 296 less than two weeks ago. “El Cucuy” dropped his seventh straight fight, tying B.J. Penn for most consecutive losses in UFC history.

Askren doesn’t rate Pimblett (21-3 MMA, 5-0 UFC) very highly. So, if Ferguson is losing to the rising star in decisive fashion, Askren thinks it’s time he hangs up his gloves.

“He says he wants to keep fighting,” Askren told Middle Easy. “Is it a monetary thing where he needs to keep fighting for money? I don’t know, but Paddy does not seem to be that good. He really doesn’t. And Tony, he just couldn’t get off his back. I don’t know what his plan was. He is a wrestler. He grew up wrestling.

“He knows how to get up. That’s folkstyle wrestling, but he chose to just be on his back for the entirety of the second and third round, right? It’s like, dude, get up. Maybe even take him down. Paddy is not an elite wrestler. You should be able to go get a takedown on this dude. Make it happen.”

Ferguson insists he’s not done yet. The 39-year-old took to social media to urge his fans to keep the faith, despite many – including UFC CEO Dana White encouraging him to retire.

“His trajectory is so insane,” Askren added. “He was like, 13-0, or whatever the hell he was for a while, and now he’s 0-7. It’s like, yeah, you need to be done, buddy.”

Stephen Thompson addresses UFC 296 loss to Shavkat Rakhmonov: ‘I’ll be back stronger and better than ever’

Stephen Thompson is staying positive following his submission loss at UFC 296.

It’s hard to keep [autotag]Stephen Thompson[/autotag] down – even in defeat.

The longtime UFC welterweight contender opened up about his loss to Shavkat Rakhmonov this past Saturday on the main card of UFC 296 in Las Vegas. Thompson (17-7-1 MMA, 12-7-1 UFC) remains optimistic and in good spirits following his submission defeat to Rakhmonov (18-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC).

“I appreciate all of your support after the fight this past Saturday,” Thompson said on his YouTube channel. “It obviously didn’t go the way I wanted it to go, and that’s why you should always follow the plan, guys. I didn’t follow the plan. That’s my fault.

“Anyway, I love you guys, and I’ll be back stronger and better than ever. I have some things to work on and get this foot healed up, and we’ll get after it again.”

The loss for the 40-year-old killed the momentum from his TKO win over Kevin Holland and put him at 1-3 in his past four trips to the cage.

As for the foot, “Wonderboy” said he may have broken it.

“That’s what happens when you don’t follow the game plan: You get submitted in the second round,” Thompson said. “I actually came out of the fight pretty much unscathed, other than the fact that I think I broke my foot in a body kick right to the elbow. Don’t kick your opponent to the elbow because that sucks.”

Bo Nickal says Colby Covington’s UFC 296 trash talk crossed a big line: ‘You’re not a good person’

Bo Nickal is not enjoying how far trash talk is going in the UFC.

[autotag]Bo Nickal[/autotag] is not a fan of the recent trash talk seen in the UFC.

Last week, [autotag]Colby Covington[/autotag] caused plenty of chaos in the MMA world given the depths of his trash talk in the lead up to his title fight against champion Leon Edwards in the main event of UFC 296 in Las Vegas. Covington took a personal dig at Edwards, mentioning his murdered father.

Like many, this didn’t sit well with Nickal.

“The trash talk in MMA has been intense,” Nickal said on his YouTube channel. “It’s been crazy. It’s insane. I don’t know why people are doing that. It’s too much. I don’t know why people are doing that.”

Nickal thinks Covington took things too far and says it showed what kind of person he is.

“That was insane,” Nickal said. “If you want to say something like that to somebody, it doesn’t matter: You’re just kind of a bad person, especially if you just double down over and over. I just feel like that’s not good character. It’s low character, and you’re not a good person. That was bad. I don’t know what people think they need to do nowadays.”

In terms of the fight itself, Covington lost a clear unanimous decision, contrary to his comments following the fight. This was his third defeat in an attempt to capture an undisputed UFC title.

Although many have been critical of Covington, Nickal thinks some credit need to be thrown Edwards’ way.

“Leon did a great job. He made him fight his fight and controlled pretty much everything,” Nickal said. “He made a couple of mistakes in the grappling scenarios where he got taken down, but he got back up, for the most part, aside from the last round, and won the fight very easily. He didn’t get hurt at all. I think obviously Colby didn’t fight well, but Leon fought well.
