Jon Jones welcomes Daniel Cormier to commentate return at UFC 285: ‘I trust that you would be non-biased’

Yes, you heard right. Jon Jones is OK with Daniel Cormier commentating his return against Ciryl Gane at UFC 285 in Las Vegas.

In his own words, [autotag]Jon Jones[/autotag] is having a really good day.

In fact, so good that he’s down for his former foe [autotag]Daniel Cormier[/autotag] to commentate his return to the octagon. The former UFC light heavyweight king makes his long-awaited comeback on March 4 at UFC 285, where Jones (26-1 MMA, 20-1 UFC) will take on Ciryl Gane for the vacant UFC heavyweight championship.

Jones and Cormier had one of the most personal and heated rivalries in the sport. The two fought twice, with Jones winning both bouts, although the last one would get overturned to a no contest due to Jones testing positive for a turinabol metabolite. Throughout that two-fight series, plenty of things were said, and they even infamously got into a brawl at a press conference.

Well, just weeks away from his return, Jones seems to have had a change in mind towards Cormier. In a series of tweets Wednesday, Jones said that he wouldn’t mind Cormier working cageside as a commentator for UFC 285.

“I’m so incredibly grateful this morning, that could’ve turned out so many different ways. Been thanking God all morning,” Jones wrote on Twitter.

“DC you are more than welcome to commentate at my fight, I think you are really good at what you do. I trust that you would be non-biased. All the best brother,” Jones later wrote.

A few moments later, Jones replied to a fan insisting through a hashtag that Cormier be the one to conduct the post-fight interview inside the cage.

“Whoever wants to do it, totally cool with me,” Jones replied. “I feel like I’m in a whole new chapter of my life, let bygones be bygones.”

Jones, who many consider to be one of the greatest fighters in MMA history, hasn’t competed since UFC 247 in February 2020. He edged out a narrow and controversial decision over Dominick Reyes in that fight for his 13th career title fight win at 205 pounds.

Since then, he’s been talking up a move to heavyweight, and it’s finally coming to fruition next month.

UFC 285 is less than one month away, with two title fights atop the bill.

As is the case with all major title fights in its jurisdiction, the Nevada Athletic Commission held a hearing Wednesday to select officials for [autotag]Jon Jones[/autotag] vs. [autotag]Ciryl Gane[/autotag] and [autotag]Valentina Shevchenko[/autotag] vs. [autotag]Alexa Grasso[/autotag].

Referees and judges were voted on and unanimously approved after recommendation from NAC executive director Jeff Mullen. The two title fights take place March 4 at T-Mobile Arena as part of the pay-per-view event’s main card.

With Dan Hooker out, Mateusz Gamrot steps in to face Jalin Turner at UFC 285

Jalin Turner will get an even higher-ranked opponent after losing out on his initial fight at UFC 285.

[autotag]Jalin Turner[/autotag] will get an even higher-ranked opponent after losing out on his initial fight at UFC 285.

[autotag]Dan Hooker[/autotag] has been forced out of the March 4 event due to a broken hand, and [autotag]Mateusz Gamrot[/autotag] (21-2 MMA, 4-2 UFC) will step in to face Turner (13-5 MMA, 6-2 UFC) at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

A person with knowledge of the matchup confirmed the booking to MMA Junkie but asked to remain anonymous because the promotion has yet to make an official announcement. Kanal Sportowy was first to report the news.

Gamrot was off to a hot start in his UFC tenure where he won four of five fights – including a win over Arman Tsarukyan. However, in his past outing, the former two-division KSW champion saw his four-fight winning streak snap at Beneil Dariush’s hands at UFC 280.

Turner, 27, has finished his past five fights in a row, most recently a TKO over Jamie Mullarkey, followed by a 45-second Performance of the Night submission of Brad Riddell at UFC 276 in July.

With the change, the UFC 285 lineup includes:

  • Jon Jones vs. Ciryl Gane – for vacant heavyweight title
  • Champ Valentina Shevchenko vs. Alexa Grasso – for women’s flyweight title
  • Viviane Araujo vs. Amanda Ribas
  • Bo Nickal vs. Jamie Pickett
  • Geoff Neal vs. Shavkat Rakhmonov
  • Derek Brunson vs. Dricus Du Plessis

  • Marc-Andre Barriault vs. Julian Marquez
  • Kamuela Kirk vs. Esteban Ribovics

Quinton Jackson: Jon Jones is great, but ‘he’s the dirtiest fighter ever’

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson thinks fellow ex-champ and upcoming heavyweight Jon Jones fights dirty.

[autotag]Quinton Jackson[/autotag] thinks [autotag]Jon Jones[/autotag]’ style of fighting is dirty.

Jackson challenged Jones (26-1 MMA, 20-1 UFC) for the light heavyweight title at UFC 135 in 2011, but fell short when he was submitted in Round 4. “Rampage” marked Jones’ first title defense, and he went on to become the greatest 205-pounder of all time.

Although Jackson admits he felt better than ever health wise in the fight, he thought some of Jones’ tactics in the fight weren’t clean. Jackson pointed to Jones’ tendency to stick his fingers out, which has caused him to accidentally poke fighters in their eyes on numerous occasions.

“Jon Jones is a great fighter. Even if he was standing in this room I would say it. But he’s the dirtiest fighter ever,” Jackson said in an interview with Chris Van Vliet. “The guy is so smart. He does the most dirtiest things.

“If you’re doing anything good on him, he’s going to poke you in the eye. If you’re advancing or doing anything good or you get the advantage, he’s going to kick your knee backwards.”

Jackson recalls getting kicked in the kneecap by Jones, which he says hindered his movement for a while.

Injured Dan Hooker out of UFC 285 bout vs. Jalin Turner

An exciting lightweight matchup at UFC 285 has been nixed due to injury, as Dan Hooker is out vs. Jalin Turner.

[autotag]Dan Hooker[/autotag] is out of UFC 285 after he suffered a hand injury in training, which leaves his fellow lightweight contender [autotag]Jalin Turner[/autotag] without an opponent – for now.

A person with knowledge of the situation informed MMA Junkie of the change Wednesday but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement. MMA Fighting first reported the change.

The promotion is currently seeking a replacement fighter.

Turner (13-5 MMA, 6-2 UFC) rides a five-fight winning streak into the matchup. At UFC 276 in July, he quickly defeated Hooker’s City Kickboxing teammate Brad Riddell by submission. Other victories on the streak include Jamie Mullarkey and Uros Medic among others.

With the change, the UFC 285 lineup includes:

  • Jon Jones vs. Ciryl Gane – for vacant heavyweight title
  • Champ Valentina Shevchenko vs. Alexa Grasso – for women’s flyweight title
  • Viviane Araujo vs. Amanda Ribas
  • Bo Nickal vs. Jamie Pickett

With Julio Arce out, Cody Garbrandt gets replacement Trevin Jones for UFC 285

Cody Garbrandt gets a new opponent for UFC 285.

[autotag]Cody Garbrandt[/autotag] has a new dance partner for his return.

The former UFC bantamweight champion has been booked to fight [autotag]Trevin Jones[/autotag], who comes in as a replacement for Julio Arce, at UFC 285 on March 4 in Las Vegas. The pay-per-view event features the return of [autotag]Jon Jones[/autotag] in a vacant heavyweight title fight against [autotag]Ciryl Gane[/autotag].

MMA Junkie confirmed the new matchup with sources following an initial report from ESPN on Friday night.

[lawrence-related id=2612911,2610738]

Garbrandt (12-5 MMA, 7-5 UFC) is looking to return to his original weight class of 135 pounds after an unsuccessful drop to 125 pounds. The 31-year-old was knocked out by Kai Kara-France in his flyweight debut back at UFC 269 in December 2021.

“No Love” was then booked against Rani Yahya twice, but their matchups were scrapped when Yahya withdrew on both occasions. Garbrandt is 1-5 in his past six fights dating back to November 2017.

Jones (13-9 MMA, 1-3 UFC) is also looking to break away from a career slump. The 32-year-old is on a three-fight losing streak. He was last seen in October, when he was outpointed in a unanimous decision by Raoni Barcelos.

With the addition, the UFC 285 lineup includes:

  • Jon Jones vs. Ciryl Gane – for vacant heavyweight title

Curtis Blaydes: ‘Size, power, explosiveness’ all to my advantage vs. Jon Jones

UFC heavyweight contender Curtis Blaydes sees numerous advantages in his favor in a matchup against Jon Jones.

[autotag]Curtis Blaydes[/autotag] sees numerous advantages in his favor if he’s matched up against [autotag]Jon Jones[/autotag].

Blaydes (17-3 MMA, 12-3 UFC) didn’t end up securing a fight with Jones (26-1 MMA, 20-1 UFC) in his heavyweight debut, but Blaydes thinks he’d pose a big threat to the former light heavyweight champion in the wrestling department. The UFC heavyweight division’s all-time leader in takedowns, Blaydes thinks Jones would have a hard time getting off his back.

“Just the difference between 215 or 197 compared to heavyweight, when you’re on the bottom, when he’s underneath me, which I do plan on him being underneath me, he’s gonna use a lot more energy than what he’s used to using,” Blaydes said on a recent episode of “Food Truck Diaries” with Brendan Schaub. “I think that’ll be the biggest factor.”

He continued, “Size, power, explosiveness. He’s not the most explosive guy. He’s very creative with the striking, but he’s not very explosive. I think he’s more well rounded, but the wrestling, the size, the explosion, and power, I think jab for jab, if we both connect, he’ll go backwards, and I won’t.”

[lawrence-related id=2613007,2612849,2610503]

Blaydes has won seven of his past eight bouts, most recently over Tom Aspinall in the UFC Fight Night 208 headliner in July, which ended in a TKO due to injury. He does not currently have a fight booked.

Jones will make his heavyweight debut against Ciryl Gane for the vacant title in the UFC 285 headliner on March 4 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Dan Hardy isn’t sure Jon Jones can succeed as heavyweight without ‘natural advantages’ at 205

Former UFC champ Jon Jones is the light heavyweight GOAT, but Dan Hardy points out how heavyweight will present new challenges.

[autotag]Dan Hardy[/autotag] isn’t sure how well [autotag]Jon Jones[/autotag] will transition to heavyweight.

Jones (26-1 MMA, 20-1 UFC) will finally make his heavyweight debut when he meets Ciryl Gane (11-1 MMA, 8-1 UFC) for the vacant title in the UFC 285 headliner March 4 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The former light heavyweight champion has bulked up significantly since he last competed in February 2020, but Hardy questions if all the physical gifts he possessed at 205 pounds will serve him well.

“We don’t know how he’s going to perform with the bigger frame,” Hardy told MMA Junkie. “Of course he’s got the height and reach for heavyweight – (6-foot-4), 84.5 inches (reach). He could quite easily grow into heavyweight, but then would he be the same fighter he was at light heavyweight? The times that he struggled at light heavyweight is when he was taking on someone that had similar physical attributes.

“Remember the first (Alexander) Gustafsson fight, that was very problematic for him to begin with. Dominick Reyes was a pain for him at times, and I feel like Jon gives up a lot of his natural advantages that he had at light heavyweight when he moves to heavyweight.”

[lawrence-related id=2610734,2610503,2610493]

Jones’ heavyweight debut will come against arguably the most agile fighter in the division in Gane. “Bon Gamin’s” movement has troubled all of his opposition so far, and Hardy expects him to be a stern test for Jones.

“Like Ciryl Gane’s 6-4, 79-inch reach or something like that, but it’s gonna be comparable to Jon Jones in ways that say a Daniel Cormier wasn’t back at light heavyweight,” Hardy said. “And the way Ciryl Gane moves is like light heavyweights did when Jon Jones was champion – the better ones. I think this is going to be a real challenge for him, and it’s difficult to kind of picture Jon Jones in a heavyweight frame. What does he move like? What techniques has he abandoned? Is he going to have anxiety associated with because now he feels like he fills up with lactate and his muscles start to burn?”

He continued, “We know how good Ciryl Gane is, and the reason why he’s so good is because he does a lot of things Jon Jones did so well at light heavyweight. I almost think it would have been easier for Jones to take on Ngannou, because at least you know what you’re getting. When he starts to move, you got to get out of the way. But Ciryl Gane never stops moving, so you can’t always stay out of the way, and we’ve seen Jon Jones kind of get outpointed a little bit at times by people that have got a good work rate and a long reach.”

Julio Arce out of Cody Garbrandt fight at UFC 285, needs surgery for injured knee

Former UFC champ Cody Garbrandt has lost yet another opponent in his attempted comeback at UFC 285.

[autotag]Cody Garbrandt[/autotag] has lost yet another opponent ahead of his attempted comeback at UFC 285.

[autotag]Julio Arce[/autotag] (18-6 MMA, 5-4 UFC) has been forced out of his March 4 bantamweight bout against Garbrandt (12-5 MMA, 7-5 UFC) at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas due to a knee injury. It is unknown if Garbrandt will remain on the card.

Arce confirmed news to MMA Junkie after an initial report from Eurosport NL. He suffered an injury to the ACL and other ligaments in his knee, and will require surgery.

Garbrandt, 31, was looking to return to 135 pounds. The former bantamweight champion was knocked out by Kai Kara-France in his flyweight debut at UFC 269 in December 2021. “No Love” was then booked against Rani Yahya twice, but their matchups were scrapped when Yahya withdrew on both occasions. Garbrandt is 1-5 in his past six fights dating back to November 2017.

Arce, 33, has alternated wins and losses in his past eight octagon outings. After defeating Daniel Santos at UFC 273, Arce dropped a unanimous decision to Montel Jackson at UFC 281 this past November.

The current UFC 285 lineup includes:
