Jon Jones downplays run-in with Bo Nickal, gives prediction for his MMA future

Jon Jones knows a thing or two about MMA wrestling, so likely is qualified to speak with a little authority on other wrestlers.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Jon Jones[/autotag] knows a thing or two about MMA wrestling, so likely is qualified to speak with a little authority on other wrestlers.

There are few who don’t think standout former collegiate wrestler [autotag]Bo Nickal[/autotag] has a big future in the sport, and Jones is among the man who are singing his praises. Each has a monumental fight on his hands Saturday at UFC 285, so they’ll be forever linked by that.

Nickal (3-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC), after a pair of wins on Dana White’s Contender Series, will make his UFC debut at middleweight against Jamie Pickett (13-8 MMA, 2-4 UFC). He’s the biggest betting favorite on the card by far at -1900 at Tipico Sportsbook. That makes him one of the biggest favorites in UFC history right out of the gate.

Jones (26-1 MMA, 20-1 UFC) headlines the card in a vacant heavyweight title fight against former interim champion Ciryl Gane (11-1 MMA, 8-1 UFC). Jones will be fighting for the first time in more than three years. The former longtime light heavyweight champ is a slight favorite to go into the history books as a two-division champion.

At UFC 285’s media day Wednesday in Las Vegas, Jones said Nickal’s media day comments about an impromptu wrestling match at the start of fight week were inaccurate.

“It wasn’t a wrestling match,” Jones said. “Bo is young and ambitious, and he’s looking for a reason to take me down, I’m sure. I’ll give him the opportunity if he wants it. But I’m an old man with a lot of tricks.

“We shook hands and we kind of got down in a wrestling stance, and I think he was thinking I was going to let his hand go and he went to to try to grab my leg and I held his hand and just kind of made him do a real awkward motion. We both looked at each other and I just (said), ‘I’ve got some tricks, now.’ I didn’t (go up to him and say I could take him down). I learned my lesson with (Daniel Cormier).”

With Jones now at heavyweight and Nickal at 185 pounds, a fight down the road doesn’t seem very likely, which may be another reason for Jones to make light of any kind of talk of a rivalry.

Instead, he said he thinks Nickal is going to be tough for people to deal with in the UFC.

“I’m super excited for Bo Nickal – just an American wrestler,” Jones said. “He represents that grit, that hard work, and I can see him going extremely far in this sport. He has one of the greatest martial arts down already, which I believe is wrestling. Us wrestlers, we get to dictate the pace of a fight. Things get tough on us, we just take it to the ground. And we also can avoid being taken down and get back to our feet when we’re in trouble, and Bo has that down. I think he’s going to do awesome. I’m excited to get to know him better.”

UFC 285 takes place Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPNews and early prelims on ESPN+.

Video: Watch jacked Jake Gyllenhaal film ‘Road House’ scene following UFC 285 weigh-ins

After UFC 285 ceremonial weigh-ins, movie star Jake Gyllenhaal took the stage to film a scene for the upcoming ‘Road House’ film.

LAS VEGAS – Fans in attendance at the UFC 285 ceremonial weigh-ins were treated to something extra involving one of the biggest stars of the sport.

After [autotag]Jon Jones[/autotag] and [autotag]Ciryl Gane[/autotag] faced off for the last time and spoke to [autotag]Joe Rogan[/autotag], former UFC two-division champ [autotag]Conor McGregor[/autotag] took to the stage with a microphone in hand.

McGregor asked fans to be loud as a scene for the upcoming ‘Road House’ film was about to be filmed with movie star Jake Gyllenhaal and UFC veteran Jay Hieron. McGregor is a co-star in the film, but was not a part of this scene.

The scene filmed in multiple takes was a ceremonial weigh-in and faceoff between Gyllenhaal and Hieron, who act as UFC fighters in the film.

Gyllenhaal looks incredibly jacked for the role, as the scene could have fit perfectly with the real UFC 285 ceremonial weigh-ins which took place minutes prior.

Check out one of the takes from the movie scene in the video above.

UFC heavyweight fighter panel including Daniel Cormier, Stipe Miocic predicts UFC 285’s Jon Jones vs. Ciryl Gane

Before the UFC 285 ceremonial weigh-ins, an illustrious panel of heavyweights gave their predictions on Jon Jones vs. Ciryl Gane.

LAS VEGAS – The main event of UFC 285 between [autotag]Jon Jones[/autotag] and [autotag]Ciryl Gane[/autotag] has some torn in their predictions, but a panel featuring Hall of Famers, former champions, and a current contender seem to be on the same page.

Former light heavyweight king Jones (26-1 MMA, 20-1 UFC) will be making his heavyweight debut against former interim champ Gane (11-1 MMA, 8-1 UFC) at the T-Mobile Arena, with the winner claiming the vacant heavyweight title.

Before the UFC 285 ceremonial weigh-ins, a heavyweight panel participated in a fan Q&A. On stage alongside UFC commentator Jon Anik were Hall of Famers [autotag]Daniel Cormier[/autotag] and [autotag]Mark Coleman[/autotag], along with former champs [autotag]Stipe Miocic[/autotag] and [autotag]Frank Mir[/autotag]. [autotag]Curtis Blaydes[/autotag], the No. 6 heavyweight contender in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie heavyweight rankings was also on stage.

Each member of the panel gave their take on how the heavyweight title fight between Jones and Gane will play out. Check out their predictions below.

Not everyone is excited about Bo Nickal’s UFC debut

One UFC fighter is not happy about being bumped in favor of Bo Nickal’s debut at UFC 285

Former Penn State wrestler and current UFC middleweight [autotag]Bo Nickal[/autotag] is set to make his promotional debut on Saturday but not everyone is excited.

Despite getting the rub from the fighting promotion to be on the pay-per-view main card, Nickal being placed there for his debut doesn’t sit well with other fighters in his weight class. No.10-ranked UFC middleweight Dricus du Plessis went off during a media session when discussing how he is on the free portion of the monumental card.

“This guy (Nickal) coming in here, making his pro debut, his UFC debut fighting on the main card, I’ve had four fights, three performance bonuses and I get booted off the card,” du Plessis said, while also clarifying there is no animosity with Nickal.

“He’s (Nickal) only here to fight but you know, the proof’s in the pudding, once you get under those lights, let’s see how you perform then,” du Plessis added.

This is just one mention of Nickal during UFC 285 fight week. He has had run-ins with other memorable fights such as Jon Jones who praised his wrestling, even having an impromptu match breaking out between them.

Nickal fights Jamie Pickett on Saturday in what will be his third professional fight since leaving Penn State where he was a three-time national champion wrestler for the program.
