Conor McGregor got knocked out and the internet quickly made a meme of it

The internet went right to work after Conor McGregor got knocked out by Dustin Poirier at UFC 257.

Conor McGregor was knocked out by Dustin Poirier during the headline event of UFC 257 this weekend. McGregor had looked alright in the bout up until the second round, but eventually his energy waned, and then Poirier landed a flurry of punches that left McGregor bloodied on the ground and the fight over.

Fans were in awe of the knockout. Khabib Nurmagomedov was unimpressed with McGregor’s performance and took a shot at him online.

But while the UFC world was reckoning with what had occurred, the internet world was hard at work — instantly turning a knocked out McGregor into an instant meme.

Here are some of the best we saw:

Floyd Mayweather rips ‘con artist’ Conor McGregor, rants on racism after UFC 257

Floyd Mayweather has criticized fans and slammed Conor McGregor following the Dubliner’s TKO defeat to Dustin Poirier at UFC 257.

[autotag]Floyd Mayweather[/autotag] has taken aim at [autotag]Conor McGregor[/autotag], and fight fans in general, following the Irishman’s TKO defeat at UFC 257.

McGregor (22-5 MMA, 10-3 UFC) was finished in the second round by Dustin Poirier in the main event on “UFC Fight Island,” as the Irishman’s latest octagon appearance ended in his third defeat in his last six UFC appearances.

After the fight, Mayweather, who stopped McGregor in the 10th round in their much-hyped boxing match in 2017, jumped on his Instagram page to slam his former opponent and criticize fans for backing the Dubliner while also hating on him.

Mayweather shared a post that asked “Why is @floydmayweather hated for the way he carries himself but @thenotoriousmma is loved for the same way he carries himself?” and responded with a long rant about the Dubliner, who he dubbed “Con Artist McLoser,” as he called out fans for racism because he doesn’t feel as beloved by fight fans as the former two-division UFC champion.

“I seen this post and my take on it is that the world knows Con Artist McLoser can steal everything from me and be loved but I’m hated,” he complained. “That just lets you all know that racism still exists. Just know, that bum will never be me or be on my level. I’m just built different, my mindset is on another planet, my skills are second to none, I’m a natural-born winner and yes I talk a lot of trash, but every time I back it up! This is what they hate.

“It’s sad that you can be a poor black kid from the ghetto that has dealt with racism your whole life and work extremely hard to put yourself and your family in a better position, and most of the hate comes from my own people.”

Mayweather then turned his attention back to McGregor as he mocked the suggestion that the Irishman could potentially face his former rival Manny Pacquiao inside the boxing ring later this year.

“Connor (sic) cannot even win in his own sport,” he said. “But talking about coming back to boxing to fight Pacquiao. Nobody wants to see that, it’s like my leftovers eating leftovers.”

How will Conor McGregor react to UFC 257 loss? ‘There’s two ways this goes,’ Dana White says

Dana White says it’s up to Conor McGregor which path he chooses, even it’s not fighting again.

ABU DHABI – UFC president Dana White sees [autotag]Conor McGregor[/autotag] going down one of two paths after Saturday night.

Depending on his mindset following his UFC 257 second-round knockout loss to Dustin Poirier, McGregor (27-6 MMA, 19-5 UFC) could come back hungrier – or not at all, according to his boss.

“I think it’ll make him hungry,” White said at the post-fight news conference. “I think it will make him hungrier. There’s two ways this goes: hungrier or, ‘I’m done.’”

White reflected on McGregor’s rise through the MMA ranks from a plumber’s apprentice on welfare to a global superstar. Outside of the sport, McGregor has everything he’s aspired for in terms of wealth and fame, so White would understand if McGregor chose the second option.

“He’s got the money. When you think about it, I’m a huge ‘Rocky’ fan. This feels like ‘Rocky 3,'” White said. “When you get off a 310-foot yacht, you know what I mean? You’re living that good life.

“It’s tough to be a savage when you’re living like he lives and has the money like he has. On his way up, he was a young, hungry kid, and he didn’t have any money and he wanted nice things. He wanted nice suits, nice cars, nice houses. He has everything he ever wanted. I don’t know. It goes this way or that way.”

McGregor, 32, returned from a 12-month layoff to compete in just his second fight in 29 months. The former UFC double champion is 1-2 in his most recent three fights, with both losses coming inside the distance. UFC 257 marked the first time McGregor had been stopped due to strikes in his pro career.

For his part, McGregor indicated he’ll bounce back from this loss.

“I’ll certainly regroup. I’ll regroup and pick myself up, get up off off the floor and go again,” McGregor said. “Styles make fights. There’s many great stylistic matchups out there. Myself and Dustin are 1-and-1. Myself and Nate (Diaz) are 1-and-1. There’s many good matchups for me. … It wasn’t my night. It wasn’t a great night, but no excuses. Hats off. I’ll regroup and pick myselk up.”

UFC 257 took place Saturday at Etihad Arena on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi. The main card streamed on ESPN+ pay-per-view after prelims on ESPN and ESPN+.
