Questions on your mind about recent happenings in the UFC or the sport of MMA in general? MMA Junkie’s Twitter Mailbag with @mma_kings is here, and this week he answers:

  • Why doesn’t [autotag]Dominick Reyes[/autotag] vs. [autotag]Jan Blachowicz[/autotag] serve as the UFC 255 headliner instead of being a co-main at UFC 253?
  • Is it crazier for [autotag]Cody Garbrandt[/autotag] to get a title shot one weight class beneath him than it was for [autotag]Jose Aldo[/autotag]?

Brandon Moreno embraces backup role for Figueiredo vs. Garbrandt title bout at UFC 255

Brandon Moreno is down to answer the short-notice call if he’s needed at UFC 255.

[autotag]Brandon Moreno[/autotag] won’t think twice about stepping in on short notice to fight for UFC gold.

The flyweight contender welcomes being a backup opponent for the title fight pitting champion Deiveson Figueiredo against former bantamweight champ Cody Garbrandt in the main event of UFC 255. Moreno (17-5-1 MMA, 6-2-1 UFC) is already scheduled to compete on the Nov. 21 card against Alex Perez.

The Mexican competitor hoped to fight sooner than November but understands why the UFC wants him on that event, given Garbrandt never has competed at 125 pounds.

“I told them if I’m not fighting for the title then give me a fight for October or even September,” Moreno said in Spanish on Monday’s episode of Hablemos MMA. “I don’t know why I need to wait that long, but they insisted it was in November so I could be on the same card and be a replacement, and I have to be conscious of that possibility.

“Obviously, when you’re fighting for a championship belt, you want to be 100 percent focused on a single rival, but those opportunities don’t come around twice in life, so you have to be ready for anything.”

Many considered Moreno next in line for the belt given he’s the highest ranked flyweight after Joseph Benavidez, who lost to Figueiredo for the title in July. He’s also unbeaten in his last four bouts.

Moreno, 26, decided not to wait for the winner of Figueiredo-Garbrandt and hold on to his spot in the rankings, as he thought the division could’ve moved on without him.

“At the end of the day, I felt like I could get demoted from my spot,” Moreno said. “I felt like if I told the UFC, because they immediately offered me the fight against Alex, I felt like if I said no they could make Alex Perez vs. Askar Askarov and the winner, if the performance is convincing, they could get the title shot and I get skipped again. That would leave me in a bad position, so I felt like I wasn’t in the position to pass on it.

“If Figueiredo, who wanted to fight me and challenged me to a fight on social media, he said in previous interviews that he didn’t want to fight against Garbrandt. He wanted the rankings to be respected, and Garbrandt had to prove he could make the weight, and he wanted to respect the official rankings. And even then, the UFC didn’t care, and they made the fight.

“So even Figueiredo, who’s the champ, he’s still not in a position to be making fights, so imagine me. I felt like I could’ve easily been put aside, so I felt like this wasn’t the time to wait. It was the right time to take the risk, because Alex Perez is a tough, tough fight. It’s a fight one can lose, so I’d rather take the risk now that I feel strong mentally and physically, and I’m a much hungrier fighter.”

Moreno didn’t get the title shot but said matchmakers assured him he would get next if victorious against Perez. The Tijuana native did get a new contract, which he’s much happier about, and he’s keeping a positive mindset heading into UFC 255.

“Everything was resolved quickly and according to the matchmaker, if I win this fight, I go for the title, no surprises, nothing,” Moreno said. “If you win the fight against Alex Perez, you’re getting the fight for the title, so I’m taking that.

“I also got a new contract, which I’m much happier with, and all those things, so I’m focusing on those positives, and I’m moving forward. Little by little the Latino fighters and not just fighters, but Latinos in general, we always have to row against the current. We have to work double, and I’m not turning away from that. I’m happy and moving forward.”

‘Shogun’ Rua vs. Paul Craig rematch added to UFC 255 on Nov. 21

Will there be a winner this time?

[autotag]Mauricio Rua[/autotag] and [autotag]Paul Craig[/autotag] are running it back.

At UFC 255, Rua (27-11-1 MMA, 11-9-1 UFC) and Craig (13-4-1 MMA, 5-4-1 UFC) will square off for the second time. The event is expected to take place Nov. 21 at a location and venue to be determined.

A person with knowledge of the situation confirmed the booking to MMA Junkie on Tuesday but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement. ESPN was the first to report the news.

The first matchup between Rua and Craig took place in November 2019. Serving as the co-main event of UFC on ESPN+ 22 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The two fighters fought the full 15 minutes in the hopes of determining a winner. However, after the fight got to the judges’ scorecards, it was declared a split draw.

Since their first meeting, each fighter has gone his next fight. Both fighters competed on July 25 in Abu Dhabi. Craig defeated Gadzhimurad Antigulov by first-round submission before Rua defeated Antonio Rogerio Nogueira by split decision.

With the addition, the UFC 255 lineup includes:

  • Deiveson Figueiredo vs. Cody Garbrandt – for the UFC flyweight title
  • Valentina Shevchenko vs. Jennifer Maia – for the UFC women’s flyweight title
  • Brandon Moreno vs. Alex Perez

Antonina Shevchenko wants on UFC 255 with sister Valentina, explains why it’s convenient to share the same card

While most siblings would rather not share the same card, Antonina Shevchenko is pushing to compete on UFC 255 with her sister Valentina.

While most siblings would rather not fight at the same event, [autotag]Antonina Shevchenko[/autotag] is pushing for it.

Shevchenko has had her sister, UFC flyweight champion Valentina, in her corner for every one of her UFC fights. But they have yet to compete on the same card in the UFC.

Shevchenko (8-2 MMA, 2-2 UFC), who’s split her first four UFC appearances, most recently competed in May, when she suffered a unanimous decision loss to Katlyn Chookagian.

Valentina is scheduled to defend her flyweight title against Jennifer Maia at UFC 255 on Nov. 21, and Antonina is hoping to land on the same card.

“Valentina will fight in November. She already has her fight, and we are thinking to ask about fighting on the same card,” Antonina told MMA Junkie. “It would be a good time for me because I have good rest, good time for me to prepare, and it would just be good timing training together and having training camp at the same time. It would be comfortable. So I hope we can find a fight for me on the same card in November.”

[lawrence-related id=543758,543764]

While Shevchenko admits that it’s probably harder on her sister, who as a champion will always compete after her, they’re already used to sharing the same card from back in their kickboxing and muay Thai days.

“I’m not sure about enjoying, but it’s convenient,” Shevchenko said. “It’s definitely difficult to have the same coach on fight night. It’s kind of difficult, but it’s more difficult for Valentina because I will fight first and she would fight on the main card, main or co-main event fight, so she will fight after me. So she will have this situation where maybe her coach isn’t with her all the time – sometimes he’ll be with me.

“But we had this situation during all our lives before UFC on all our world championships – it was the same situation. It was almost every time that we had the same training camp, same competition, and same fight night, and that’s why we kind of know what to do, how to make it work. That’s why it’s very convenient, very comfortable for us.”

Brandon Moreno vs. Alex Perez targeted for Nov. 21 at UFC 255

After missing out on a flyweight title shot, Brandon Moreno and Alex Perez will fight each other to potentially settle the No. 1 contender.

Neither [autotag]Brandon Moreno[/autotag] nor [autotag]Alex Perez[/autotag] were chosen as the next UFC flyweight title challenger, but both men still could be in play if needed.

As it stands, Moreno (17-5-1 MMA, 6-2-1 UFC) and Perez (24-5 MMA, 6-1 UFC) are expected to fight each other Nov. 21 at UFC 255. A person with knowledge of the situation confirmed the planned booking to MMA Junkie on Monday following an initial report from Spanish-language website Milenio.

UFC 251 currently is set to be headlined by a 125-pound title fight between champion Deiveson Figueiredo and ex-bantamweight champ Cody Garbrandt, who was chosen to challenge for the belt over top contenders Moreno and Perez. Should Garbrandt, who’s making his flyweight debut, not make weight, the UFC could turn to Moreno or Perez to step in.

[lawrence-related id=539685,536998]

Moreno is ranked No. 4 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie flyweight rankings. He hasn’t been beaten in his last four fights, going 3-0-1 during that stretch. In his most recent bout, Moreno won a unanimous decision against Jussier Formiga in March at UFC on ESPN+ 28.

Perez, meanwhile, is No. 5 at 125 pounds and is riding a three-fight winning streak. His most recent victory also came against Formiga in June at UFC 250. Perez won the fight by TKO with vicious leg kicks.

Prior to Garbrandt getting the nod, both Moreno and Perez had expressed their desire to challenge Figueiredo, who claimed the vacant title last month with a first-round technical submission of Joseph Benavidez. If nothing else, Moreno vs. Perez could serve to determine the following No. 1 contender.

With the addition, the latest UFC 255 lineup includes:

  • Champ Deiveson Figueiredo vs. Cody Garbrandt – for flyweight title
  • Champ Valentina Shevchenko vs. Jennifer Maia – for women’s flyweight title
  • Brandon Moreno vs. Alex Perez

UFC 255 gets two flyweight title fights: Figueiredo vs. Garbrandt, Shevchenko vs. Maia

It’ll be a flyweight party this fall at UFC 255 with a pair of title fights.

It’ll be a flyweight party this fall at UFC 255.

A pair of 125-pound belts will be on the line at the top of the card. [autotag]Deiveson Figueiredo[/autotag] will put his title on the line for the first time against former champion [autotag]Cody Garbrandt[/autotag]. And women’s titleholder [autotag]Valentina Shevchenko[/autotag] will meet challenger [autotag]Jennifer Maia[/autotag], UFC president Dana White told broadcast partner ESPN.

UFC 255 is set for Nov. 21. A location and venue still are to be determined, but the main card will air on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN and early prelims on UFC Fight Pass/ESPN+.

Figueiredo won the flyweight title in July with a brutal first-round knockout of Joseph Benavidez in their rematch. In February, Figueiredo stopped Benavidez with a second-round TKO, but was not eligible to win the then-vacant flyweight title because he missed weight. Three weeks ago, though, he had no weight issues and won the belt free and clear with his fourth straight victory.

Garbrandt will test the flyweight waters for the first time. He won the banamtamweight title against Dominick Cruz in December 2016, but lost it to T.J. Dillashaw in his first attempted title defense. He lost a rematch to Dillashaw, as well. And in March 2019, he was knocked out by Pedro Munhoz, which gave him three straight knockout losses after starting his career 11-0. But in June, he rebounded in a big way with a bonus-winning KO of Raphael Assuncao at UFC 250.

Shevchenko won the then-vacant women’s flyweight title with a unanimous decision over former strawweight champ Joanna Jedrzejczyk at UFC 231. Since then, she’s had three successful defenses of the belt against Jessica Eye, Liz Carmouche and Katlyn Chookagian.

Maia just this past Saturday submitted Joanne Calderwood with a vicious armbar in Las Vegas for her first UFC bonus. It got her back on track after a decision loss to Chookagian in November 2019. The win also showed she can make the flyweight mark on the scale after missing weight in a win over Roxanne Modafferi and the loss to Chookagian.
