Raulian Paiva wants someone in the top 10 after UFC 251 win

Take a look inside Raulian Paiva’s win over Zhalgas Zhumagulov at UFC 251 in Abu Dhabi.

ABU DHABI – [autotag]Raulian Paiva[/autotag] beat Zhalgas Zhumagulov with a unanimous decision Saturday on the preliminary card at UFC 251 in Abu Dhabi.

Take a look inside the fight with Paiva, who now has back-to-back wins after a pair of decision losses to open his UFC tenure in 2019.

Result: Raulian Paiva def. Zhalgas Zhumagulov via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
Updated records: Paiva (20-3 MMA, 2-2 UFC), Zhumagulov (13-4 MMA, 0-1 UFC)
Key stat: Zhumagulov outstruck Paiva 73-56 and landed the fight’s only pair of takedowns – but came up short with the judges.

Paiva on the fight’s key moment

“The fight was a little bit different than I expected. There are no easy fights in the UFC. I’m just happy I was able to show some improvement in my game. I was able to work a lot of kicks – something I don’t normally use. For this particular opponent, it seemed like something that would work. The result showed for itself. I’m really happy with the performance.”

Paiva on executing his game plan

“He’s very good at what he does. I knew he was mostly a striker. I was ready to strike with him and see who’s the best at it. He tried a few takedowns, but I was able to reverse them. If it did go to the ground, I knew my jiu-jitsu was better than his. Overall, striking with him was a good choice.”

Paiva on what he wants next

“I was ranked 14th (in the UFC) coming into the fight. I just want to ask if I can get a top-10 opponent. I think I should go up the rankings a bit with the win. Hopefully I can get a top-10 opponent.”

Sportsbook gives ‘bad beat refunds’ to anyone who bet on Max Holloway winning at UFC 251

Proof that sometimes when you lose, you really win.

Online sportsbook FanDuel made a surprising announcement Monday that it’s refunding anyone who placed a bet on [autotag]Max Holloway[/autotag] winning after his “controversial” split decision loss to Alexander Volkanovski in their featherweight title fight at UFC 251.

Come again? You read that correctly: A sportsbook is giving back money (OK, site credit) to customers who lost fair and square.

This past Saturday in Abu Dhabi, Holloway attempted to reclaim the 145-pound title after losing it to Volkanovski last December, but he came up just short as the judges scored it 48-47, 47-48, 48-47 for the champion, much to the dismay of fans on social media – as well as this writer.

But here’s the thing: As much as I believe Holloway won the fight, it’s not difficult to see why it went the other way. The problem is that no rounds were won more clearly than Holloway winning the first two rounds with crisp striking and knocking down Volkanovski in each. Round 5 also was definitely in favor of Volkanovski. Rounds 3 and 4, however, were tightly contested and could’ve gone either way.

[lawrence-related id=534589,534434]

Coming out of this fight, it feels like a lot of people need to hear this, so I’ll just say it: A close fight doesn’t always have to end in “controversy” or be a “robbery.”

That’s what makes FanDuel’s decision a curious one. Again, without any actual controversy – as in, there’s no evidence of a fix or conflict of interest or bias, etc. – Fan Duel is refunding customers essentially on the basis that it doesn’t agree with the judges.

Which, you know, is an interesting precedent to set as a sportsbook, but hey, nice win for the little guys. Hopefully some of you can turn it into even bigger winnings.

See how the UFC 251 winners and losers reacted on social media outlets such as Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

Since the early days when the sport was anything but a mainstream endeavor the MMA industry has thrived and survived through various websites, forums, and, perhaps most importantly, social-media platforms.

Fighters interact with fans, each other and many more through the likes of Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, which helps outsiders get a deeper look into the minds of the athletes.

Following Saturday’s UFC 251 event in Abu Dhabi, several of the winning and losing fighters, along with their coaches, training partners or family members, took to social media to react to the event or share a message with supporters.

@clubboec @ufc @ufcrussia

Jorge Masvidal’s drawing power is clear after UFC 251. Now what can he do with it? | Opinion

UFC 251 proved that Jorge Masvidal isn’t just a “BMF.” He’s a “BMF” who sells.

“This thing is trending off the charts. This thing is trending higher than a Conor McGregor fight. … This thing is trending as big as a fight as I’ve ever seen in my entire career.”

When UFC president Dana White said this the day before UFC 251, you figured he was just doing his job as a promoter. Not that [autotag]Jorge Masvidal[/autotag] didn’t become the breakout star of 2019 (he certainly did), but when you start talking about the possibility for anyone’s fight to outdo [autotag]Conor McGregor[/autotag] numbers, it’s hard to believe.

And yet, it was revealed Monday in a report by The Athletic that UFC 251, which featured Masvidal losing to welterweight champion Kamaru Usman in the headliner, generated an estimated 1.3 million pay-per-view buys this past Saturday on ESPN+ only. It marked the fifth time that the UFC has reached 1.3 million buys for an event, with the most recent being UFC 229 in October 2018 – headlined by Khabib Nurmagomedov’s win over McGregor – which holds the promotion’s buyrate record at 2.4 million.

So, let’s try and put this into perspective. Just how big of a star do these numbers suggest Masvidal really is? Consider the following:

  • Masvidal’s first fight of 2020, with practically no promotion, outdid McGregor’s highly anticipated return to MMA after more than a year off in January at UFC 246, which sold 1 million.
  • UFC 251 performed higher than any of the pay-per-views headlined by one of the promotion’s biggest stars, Ronda Rousey.
  • UFC 245 last December featured many of the same components as UFC 251 – Usman in the main event, Max Holloway vs. Alexander Volkanovski 1, Jose Aldo, and Petr Yan. We don’t know the numbers from that event (likely because they weren’t great), but if I had to make a generous guess, I’d say no more than 500,000. And I’m probably being too generous, but for the sake of this discussion, let’s go with that, which basically would equate to Masvidal single-handedly being responsible for roughly 800,000 buys.
  • If anyone doubts the latter statement above, Masvidal’s UFC 251 post-fight news conference video has 2.7 million views on YouTube compared to Usman’s 406,000 as of this writing.
  • And just to make one other comparison between UFC 245 and UFC 251 as it relates to MMA Junkie, our play-by-play post – always our biggest traffic driver on fight nights – did 40 percent more page views for UFC 251 than it did for UFC 245.

In other words, Masvidal isn’t just a “BMF.” He’s a “BMF” who sells.

Prior to accepting the Usman fight on six days’ notice, Masvidal was engaged in a public dispute with White and UFC executives over his compensation, which is why the bout fell through in the first place. Usman’s original UFC 251 opponent, Gilbert Burns, testing positive for COVID-19 gave Masvidal all the leverage he needed when the UFC came calling in an emergency, but even then he admitted he didn’t get paid exactly what he wanted – but it was enough to make him happy.

[lawrence-related id=534748,534446,534350]

One day before UFC 251, Masvidal was asked about what he learned from these negotiations and offered advice to young fighters.

“Know your value,” he said. “A lot of the young guys just don’t know their value. Because a lot of the young guys don’t know their value, and it’s not their fault. I didn’t know my value. When I was 19, 20 years old, if somebody offered me $2,000, I’d kill a gorilla. It’s tough as these kids are coming up.

“All I can tell them is know your value and stick to your guns.”

Masvidal certainly knows his value now, and there’s no question that future fights with McGregor, Nate Diaz, Colby Covington, or even Leon Edwards after their infamous “three-piece and a soda” encounter, would capture the attention of the general public and sell big to varying degrees.

Can he stick to his guns, though, to ensure he gets paid exactly what he deserves moving forward? At 35 and nearing his 17th year as a professional fighter, it’s super necessary he does.

Jiri Prochazka takes the anyone, any time stance toward eventual UFC title contention

Take a look inside Jiri Prochazka’s knockout of Volkan Oezdemir at UFC 251 in Abu Dhabi.

ABU DHABI – [autotag]Jiri Prochazka[/autotag] beat Volkan Oezdemir with a second-round knockout Saturday to close out the preliminary card at UFC 251 in Abu Dhabi.

Take a look inside the fight with Prochazka, who picked up a big first impression in his UFC debut and won for the 11th straight time – including nine straight by knockout.

Result: Jiri Prochazka def. Volkan Oezdemir via knockout (punch) – Round 2, 0:49
Updated records: Prochazka (27-3-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC), Oezdemir (17-5 MMA, 5-4 UFC)
Key stat: Oezdemir outstruck Prochazka 44-33 in the fight, but one of Prochazka’s 33 was the one that put Oezdemir out cold.

[lawrence-related id=534315,533729,534295]

Prochazka on the fight’s key moment

“Nothing surprised me, but I made many mistakes. I didn’t put enough focus on his punches. I was too focused on my punches and to knock him out. I was not focused on his attacks. The low kick and then the high kick from the same leg was important. I saw him (wobble), so I knocked him out.”

Prochazka on the “Fight Island” experience

“I feel amazing. I expected more wrestling from him, but that was a good fight. I won my first fight in the UFC — that’s a big step for me. … ‘Fight Island’ is an amazing place. Dana White and his team made something amazing. There were no sports in the world right now. This is amazing and I’m very glad to be part of it.”

Prochazka on what he wants next

“I want to fight very soon because I want to take the title. That’s my mission. But I also need to work on my performances. I made some mistakes. So let’s go. I respect everyone. Whoever they give me, I will fight with him. I just want to show my art.”

Jorge Masvidal thanks supporters after UFC 251 reportedly rakes in 1.3 million pay-per-view buys

UFC president Dana White apparently wasn’t kidding when he said prior to UFC 251 that the event was trending to draw major numbers.

UFC president Dana White apparently wasn’t kidding when he said prior to UFC 251 that the event was trending to draw major numbers.

According to a report by The Athletic, Saturday’s event headlined by UFC welterweight champion [autotag]Kamaru Usman[/autotag] and fan-favorite [autotag]Jorge Masvidal[/autotag] raked in approximately 1.3 million pay-per-view buys.

Shortly after it surfaced, Masvidal (35-14 MMA, 12-7 UFC) took to Twitter to acknowledge the news and thank his fans (and haters) for their support.

“The overwhelming amount of support I have received before, during, and after this journey has been humbling,” Masvidal wrote. “Still got a lot of goals to meet. All of you that tuned in to see me win, thank you. Those that tuned in to see me lose, thank you.”

[lawrence-related id=534394,534446,534350]

The estimated 1.3 million buys is the most the promotion has drawn for a single event since UFC 229 in October 2018, which holds the promotion’s record at an estimated 2.4 million. That event was headlined by the infamous grudge match between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor.

Three title fights were on Saturday’s billing: Usman vs. Masvidal, Alexander Volkanovksi vs. Max Holloway, and Petr Yan vs. Jose Aldo. Masvidal lost a five-round unanimous decision after taking the fight on just six days’ notice.

UFC 251 took place at Flash Forum at Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. It aired on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN/ESPN+ and early prelims on UFC Fight Pass.

Result: Makwan Amirkhani def. Danny Henry via technical submission (anaconda choke) – Round 1, 3:15
Updated records: Amirkhani (16-4 MMA, 6-2 UFC), Henry (12-4 MMA, 2-2 UFC)

[lawrence-related id=534315,533729,534295]

Amirkhani on the fight’s key moment

“It’s never nice when there’s someone on top of you trying to hold you down. It makes you tired and slows you down. That was my plan. But I also knew it was early and we both had dry skin, so I just said, ‘Let’s finish the fight quick.’ When I saw the opportunity to go for the anaconda, I secured the choke.”

Amirkhani on getting back in the win column

“Everything went terribly wrong in my last fight. I got a new opportunity to show I belong here and what I’m about. I feel amazing, like a reborn child. Victories are always nice, but in the first round is always sweeter.”

Amirkhani on what he wants next

“I don’t have a name in mind. Whoever the UFC offers me, I will always say yes. I just want to go back and start my training again. I’m aiming for the belt. That’s where I’m heading, so there’s no time to celebrate.”
