UCLA vs Utah Game Preview

Why Utah Will Win

Here comes the power.

Washington brought a strong defense to Los Angeles, and it didn’t do enough against the UCLA attack allowing close to 500 yards in the 40-32 Bruin win.

Utah is different.

The Utes bring far more toughness and production than anything the Bruins have seen so far. It’s leading the Pac-12 in total defense, it’s second in the nation against the pass, and gives up just 111 rushing yards per game.

Combine all of that with the toughness of the offensive line and the consistency of QB Cameron Rising – one bad throw against Florida aside – and this style travels.

Takeaways have been a huge part of UCLA’s 5-0 start – coming up with 11 so far including two against Washington – but Utah has only given it up four times and hasn’t suffered multiple turnovers in any one game.

Ground, pound, repeat – Utah can do that, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why UCLA Will Win

This is a tougher UCLA team that it gets credit for.

It starts with the brilliant job done by an offensive line that leads the nation in fewest tackles for loss per game allowed, Zach Charbonnet and the ground attack can power away – it’s running better than Utah is.

Utah might be tremendous defensively, but Anthony Richardson and the Florida ground game rolled on the ground – the Gators ran for 283 yards – and San Diego State and Oregon State were able to run well, too. UCLA will be balanced and fast, but it’ll get nasty when it has to.

On the other side, the defense has done its part. South Alabama is the only team to hit the 100-yard rushing mark against the Bruins, there are plenty of plays in the backfield, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Utah doesn’t win away from Salt Lake City against good teams.

Assuming Florida will finish strong, Utah has gone 2-8 in its last ten games away from home against teams that finished with a winning record. They team’s style works anywhere, but it seems to have a problem in close games when it’s not in familiar surroundings.

Do you trust UCLA to come up with a brilliant game against a good team two weeks in a row? This is a veteran squad with great lines and a coach who has things in place …

And Utah is playing better overall. The Utes will keep the score low and come up with the big plays in the backfield late to get out with a huge win.

UCLA vs Utah Game Preview

Why UCLA Will Win

Even with the loss to Oregon last week, UCLA is still deep in the hunt for the Pac-12 title. It needs Arizona State to have a few problems, and winning out is a must, but there’s a whole lot of motivation.

Also, don’t discount what a big deal it would be to get bowl eligible for the first time since 2017.

Utah had the Pac-12 South all to itself, but it collapsed in an ugly 42-34 loss to Oregon State. The defense had a rough time against the run, the Beavers came up with a good balance, and the offense couldn’t come through when needed.

UCLA wins when it runs well. It’s 5-0 when getting to 200 yards, and 0-3 when it doesn’t. Utah is 0-3 when allowing 200 rushing yards, 4-0 when it doesn’t, but those four wins were against teams that can’t pound and get nasty like UCLA can.

On the flip side, Utah works better when it’s running well, and UCLA’s run D has been terrific – it has yet to allow 200 yards.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Utah Will Win

Utah takes on another level at home.

It came up with one of its most complete performances of the season in Rice-Eccles in a key win over Arizona State, and it had its best running game of the year against Washington State. UCLA is 3-0 on the road, but Stanford, Arizona, and Washington aren’t Utah.

The pass rush has been hit-or-miss, but the Utes lead the Pac-12 in sacks and they’re good at generating pressure. UCLA is good defensively – again, it’s great against the run – but it doesn’t come up with enough big things behind the line.

Offensively, Cameron Rising continues to be the quarterback who can take the Utes forward steadily producing over the last three games with enough deep shots to matter, all while adding a bit on the ground.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Utah will be just balanced enough to get through a tight, tough battle.

This will go into the fourth quarter close, but just how healthy is UCLA QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson? He’s expected to play through a hand injury, but he’s taking a beating as the season goes on – will he be able to get through the game and still be effective late?

He’ll be great, Rising will be great, and the game will be great with the Utes holding on for dear life in the final few minutes.

Why Utah Will Win

The Utah offensive line will get to eat.

It’s the opener for the Utes after not being able to go last week, and they’re going keep it simple.

Use the amazing, veteran offensive line, blast away on a UCLA defensive front that gave up 264 yards and five scores in the 48-42 loss to Colorado, assume a rotation of running backs will get to pound away, and expect that the changes on defense won’t be that big a deal.

It’s Utah. The defense is going to be very big up front, very active in the linebacking corps, and as long as the group can keep UCLA QB. Dorian Thompson-Robinson from taking off, it’ll be doing its job.

Colorado didn’t generate any pressure. That’s not going to be a problem for the Utes.

Week 11 Schedule, Predictions, Lines

Why UCLA Will Win

The Bruins got a week under their belts.

It might have been a loss, but Thompson-Robinson was outstanding – he took off for 109 yards and threw for 404 yards and three touchdowns – and there were a whole lot of big plays and shots down the field.

Utah’s secondary is going to be terrific, but it might take a little bit of time with the loss of several key parts. As long as the Bruins can stop the mistakes – it turned the ball over four times against the Buffs – and if the offense can keep on producing with the pace it played with – especially in the second half – this should be a fight. but …

CFN College Football Experts Picks

What’s Going To Happen

UCLA NEVER seemed like it had the ball last week, and there’s a reason.

It didn’t.

When it wasn’t turning it over, it was giving up long marches. Colorado had its offense on the field for almost 40 minutes, and now Utah will do the same.

The Utes might want to press, but they’re not going to screw around too much. They’ve won the last four in the series and five in the last six, and most without much of a problem.

They won’t have much of a problem here, either.

UCLA (4-5) vs. Utah (8-1) Game Preview

Why UCLA Will Win

Joshua Kelley is running as well as any back in the country over the last few weeks.

He has rushed for 100 yards or more in four of the last five games, and has all but carried the team for stretches in the last three outings with 466 yards and seven scores. Now he has to go against the devastating Utah defensive front that’s going to focus all attention on No. 27.

And that’s where Dorian Thompson-Robinson has to come through.

The sophomore doesn’t have to be Joe Burrow, but he’s coming off a brilliant day in the win over Colorado a few weeks ago – hitting 75% of his throws for 226 yards and two scores – to make it his third straight game with multiple touchdown passes.

The Utah defense might be brilliant, but it gave up 316 yards and four scores to Washington’s Jacob Eason two weeks ago, and has been hit for 200 yards or more through the air against five of the eight Power Five teams on the slate.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Utah Will Win

The UCLA defense has been better over the second half of the season, but the secondary still isn’t making enough big things happen.

The interception against Colorado was the first one from the Bruins in the last five games – this group just doesn’t take the ball away enough. That works just fine with Utah’s Tyler Huntley, who just doesn’t give the ball away.

RB Zack Moss and the tough Utah running game might be the heart-and-soul of the attack, but Huntley has been brilliant at cranking up the explosive plays without screwing up.

He’s averaging close to 11 yards per pass, is hitting 74% of his throws, and has pitched just one interception on the season.

And then there’s Moss and what he does against UCLA.

He only got a few carries as a freshman, but he ripped through the Bruins for 153 yards and two scores in a 48-17 win as a sophomore, and he came up with a career-high 211-yard, three-score day in last year’s 41-10 win.

The Ute O should be balanced, and …

[lawrence-related id=499899]

What’s Going To Happen

Oh yeah, the Utah defense.

It might have had a few issues with Washington a few weeks ago, but it’s third in the nation overall, has the defensive front to stuff Kelley. This is national muscle-flexing time for a Utah team looking to make a big statement to the College Football Playoff committee.

UCLA can still go bowling with wins over USC and Cal, but this week it’s about to run into a team that’s just that good.
