UAB at LSU odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s UAB at LSU odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The UAB Blazers (5-5) visit Tiger Stadium to take on the 7th-ranked LSU Tigers (8-2) Saturday. Kickoff for this non-conference tilt is set for 9 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the UAB vs. LSU odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

The Tigers are coming off a 13-10 road victory at Arkansas, failing to cover as 5.5-point favorites last Saturday. LSU is 3-1 against the spread (ATS) over its last 4 games and is 6-4 ATS on the season.

LSU ranks No. 39 in both total yards (425.2 per game) and points scored (32.6) while having a competent defense as well that allows just 21.0 per game. QB Jayden Daniels steers the offense — he has thrown for 2,080 yards with 14 TDs and ran for 629 yards with 10 TDs this season.

While the Tigers are No. 7 in the AFCA Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports, they are No. 6 in the College Football Playoff Rankings.

The Blazers defeated North Texas 41-21 a week ago, covering as 6.5-point home favorites. However, they are just 1-4 ATS over their last 5 and 4-6 ATS overall.

The Blazers are led by RB DeWayne McBride, who has 1,407 rushing yards with 17 touchdowns

UAB at LSU picks and predictions

Prediction

LSU 38, UAB 20

Moneyline

PASS.

Risking 6.5 times the potential profit with LSU (-650) doesn’t make much sense, and while UAB (+485) would offer a nice payoff, it’s not winning Saturday.

Against the spread

BET LSU -15.5 (-109).

Simply put, LSU gets the job done at home. It is 5-1 ATS this season at home, and there’s no reason it will slow down now.

Daniels and Co. beat then-No. 6 Alabama 32-31 in OT as 13.5-point underdogs at home 2 weeks ago and also took down Ole Miss 45-20 at home as 1-point dogs 2 weeks before that. Visiting Death Valley is no easy task.

UAB has not played up to par lately. With LSU ranking 54th in the nation in opponents rushing yards per game (139.9), Blazers RB McBride could be limited compared to his usual competition.

Over/Under

LEAN OVER 50.5 (-112).

LSU has scored 30 or more in all but 1 home game this season. The mere outlier was a 40-13 loss to then-No. 8 Tennessee.

LSU and UAB are both 4-6 O/U, which is why this comes in as a partial-unit play.

However, UAB has a dynamic offense as well, having scored 41 on North Texas and 38 on UTSA the week prior. The Blazers have scored at least 38 points in 3 of their last 6.

UAB at Western Kentucky odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Friday’s UAB at Western Kentucky odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The UAB Blazers (4-2, 2-1 C-USA) and the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (4-3, 2-1) meet Friday at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium in Bowling Green, Ky. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET (CBS Sports Network). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the UAB vs. Western Kentucky odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

UAB has bounced back from a 28-24 loss at Rice to open October, posting conference victories over Middle Tennessee (41-14) and Charlotte (34-20). The Blazers have alternated covers in their 6 games, while the Under is 4-2.

Western Kentucky suffered consecutive losses to Troy (34-27) and UTSA (31-28) to kick off October, but it roughed up Middle Tennessee 35-17 last time out to remain in the picture for the Conference USA title. However, both the Blazers and Hilltoppers cannot afford a second league loss with North Texas and UTSA beaten in conference play.

UAB at Western Kentucky picks and predictions

Prediction

UAB 33, Western Kentucky 29

Moneyline

UAB (+102) is a solid value as a short ‘dog on the road. The Blazers are a fantastic running team, posting 244.0 yards per game on the ground to rank 8th in the nation. RB DeWayne McBride has been a star, posting 5 consecutive 100-yard games with at least 1 touchdown (11 total).

Western Kentucky has the offense to hang with UAB, and this should be an entertaining game. In the end, the run game of the Blazers will be the difference, however. The Hilltoppers rank 77th overall in the run game.

Against the spread

UAB +1.5 (-110) isn’t nearly as good of a value as playing it straight up. There is some risk here, as Western Kentucky is an impressive 5-2 ATS overall this season, but the Blazers have the more complete offense.

Over/Under

OVER 57.5 (-110) seems like a gift, really. Western Kentucky is averaging 40.0 PPG this season, ranking 19th, and can pass with the best of them. We covered UAB’s prowess in the run game, and it averages 34.5 PPG (37th).

Both of these defenses will be pushed to the limits in a rather high-scoring affair.

Middle Tennessee at UAB odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Middle Tennessee at UAB odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The UAB Blazers (2-2, 0-1 C-USA) welcome the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders (3-2, 0-1) to Protective Stadium in Birmingham Saturday. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Middle Tennessee at UAB odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

UAB comes into this game following a 28-24 loss at Rice. It has home wins over Georgia Southern and Alabama A&M, while losing by 4 at Rice and 7 (21-14) at o Liberty.

Starting RB DeWayne McBride has been the most efficient Blazers player, totaling 521 rushing yards (a 6.9 yards-per-carry average) and 6 touchdowns. UAB averages 220.5 rushing yards per game.

As for Middle Tennessee, it lost in its opener to James Madison 44-7. It then went on a 3-game win streak, which included a 45-31 win at the then-No. 25 Miami Hurricanes 2 weeks ago. However, the Blue Raiders lost to visiting UTSA 45-30 last week.

The Blue Raiders are led by QB Chase Cunningham, who is in his 2nd season as the starter. He’s thrown for 1,368 yards and 8 touchdowns so far this season.

Middle Tennessee at UAB picks and predictions

Prediction

UAB 27, Middle Tennessee 24

Moneyline

PASS.

While Middle Tennessee did beat Miami, it also has some ugly losses that make it hard to trust in this battle. Expect UAB to win, especially at home, but at -380, I wouldn’t back it.

Against the spread

BET MIDDLE TENNESSEE +9.5 (-108).

Middle Tennessee played well against UTSA but just couldn’t convert on its forced turnovers.

The Blue Raiders have defended well against what the Blazers do best – run the ball. Middle Tennessee ranks 9th in the nation in opponents’ yards per rushing attempt at just 2.8.

It allows just 107.8 rushing yards per game. UAB, on the other hand, ranks 15th in rushing yards per game (220.5 per game as mentioned above). This battle – Blue Raiders rush defense vs. the Blazers running game – will be what wins the game, and against teams like Miami, the Blue Raiders’ defense held up.

With this being coach Bryant Vincent’s first season at UAB, he still doesn’t have a great track record and he hasn’t had his team impressive against competent opponents, which Middle Tennessee is.

The Blazers have only beaten an FCS side and a low-tier Sun Belt opponent. I’ll take the BLUE RAIDERS +9.5 (-108) to cover here.

Over/Under

LEAN UNDER 53.5 (-108).

The expectation is that Middle Tennessee throws UAB off its rhythm, and if that’s the case, the Blazers may not be able to hit its 33-points-per-game average.

UAB is also allowing just 17.5 points per game. The Blazers’ defensive strength is in the pass defense. They allow just 161.8 passing yards per game, which is Middle Tennessee’s strength.

Simply put, both teams defend their opposing offenses’ strength well. Considering that, I’ll take UNDER 52.5 (-108).

March Madness: UAB vs. Houston odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Friday’s UAB vs. Houston odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The No. 12 UAB Blazers (27-7) meet the No. 5 Houston Cougars (29-5) Friday in the first round of the South Region. Tip is scheduled for 9:20 p.m. ET at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh. Below, we look at the UAB vs. Houston odds and lines, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

The Blazers defeated Louisiana Tech 82-73 in the Conference USA Championship to earn an automatic bid. UAB has won 7 straight games, but  covered the spread in just 3 of them. On the season, the Blazers are 18-13-1 against the spread (ATS).

UAB averages the 14th-most points per game in the nation (80.0) and allows just the 55th most to opponents (65.1). G Jordan Walker is their leading scorer at 20.4 points per game.

Houston is coming off a dominating 71-53 win over Memphis in the American Athletic Conference title game, covering as 3.5-point favorites. It is 22-12 ATS this season and have covered 7 of its last 8.

The Cougars are led by G Kyle Edwards who has stepped up with G Marcus Sasser sidelined. Houston has the No. 1 defense in terms of opponents’ efficiency, allowing teams to shoot just 37.2% from the field.

Rankings courtesy of the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

UAB vs. Houston odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Houston 73, UAB 67

Money line

PASS.

Houston is one of the best defensive teams in the tournament, and I like them to stave off the upset. However, UAB, given its efficiencies, is the only way to play the money line.

I’d look toward the points for value though.

Against the spread

BET UAB +8.5 (-108).

UAB may be the best No. 12 seed in the tournament and has a plethora of experienced players. Its top 9 scorers are either juniors or seniors, and with a 7-foot starting center, it certainly won’t lack size either.

Not only do the Blazers rank 14th in points per game, but they also sit 43rd in field goal percentage and 30th in three-point percentage. UAB has the 29th-most efficient offense.

Houston’s elite defense should be able to keep them from their 80 points per game, but I’d expect UAB to hold up, especially since its defense also sits 88th in the nation.

As for Houston, losing Sasser has been huge as it has dropped 2 games to Memphis and one to SMU in its last 14 games. It has been held under 72 points in 4 of its last 6.

I expect the Cougars to win, but the Blazers are efficient enough to keep this game close.

Over/Under

LEAN to the OVER 137.5 (-115).

UAB is efficient and, given its experience, should be able to help force its style in this battle.

The Blazers sit 79th in adjusted tempo per Kenpom. Houston plays at a much slower pace, especially without Sasser, but it is still efficient, shooting 46.7% from the field this season.

While it is just 14-18-2 O/U and 6-7-1 O/U more recently, the Cougars may be forced to slow down a UAB team that has typically imposed its will on opponents in Conference USA.

UAB is 21-10-1 O/U this season and has gone over in 5 straight and in 10 of its last 13.

Independence Bowl: UAB Blazers at BYU Cougars odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s UAB Blazers at BYU Cougars odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The UAB Blazers (8-4) will take on the No. 12 BYU Cougars (10-2). Kickoff is scheduled for Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET, and the game will be held at Independence Stadium in Shreveport, LA. Below, we look at the UAB at BYU odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

UAB had a solid season in the Conference USA West division, finishing second behind UTSA. UAB had four losses on the season and really only one they’ll regret, a 30-24 defeat by Rice.

UAB scores almost 30 points per game and gives up around 22 per game. Star RB DeWayne McBride, averaging 6.7 yards per game with over 1,100 yards and 12 touchdowns, has been the backbone of the offense.

As for BYU, they’re also led by a dynamic offense, one averaging over 33 points per game. RB Tyler Allgeier has been their star, totaling 20 touchdowns and over 1,400 rushing yards.

BYU’s only losses have been to Boise State and Baylor.

Prediction

BYU 38, UAB 21

Money line

PASS on the money line. I like BYU here, and the -250 just isn’t worth it when the spread is still under a touchdown difference.

Against the spread

BET on BYU -6.5 (-115) as they’ve had a far more consistent schedule and have drastically better victories. UAB was destroyed by teams like Georgia and Liberty.

As for BYU, they took Utah, a team that beat the once top-five Oregon twice. BYU also has a competent pass game behind Jaren Hall, who has 20 touchdowns and just 5 interceptions.

BYU had two losses in the NCAA’s 60th strength of schedule UAB had the 94th SOS and had four losses. BYU has looked far better and should impose its will on UAB.

Over/Under

BET on the OVER 54.5 (-120) as both teams have far better offenses than they do defenses. BYU is topping 30 points per game.

Similarly, UAB’s offense is nearing 30 per game. UAB’s strength is also BYU’s weakness. BYU’s defense allows more than 150 rushing yards per game, playing to UAB’s strength.

While I still envision a BYU blowout, points should be in abundance.

UAB at Georgia odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s UAB at Georgia odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The UAB Blazers (1-0) and No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs (1-0) meet Saturday at Sanford Stadium in Athens, Ga. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the UAB at Georgia odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

Rankings courtesy of the AFCA Coaches Poll, powered by USA TODAY Sports.

The Blazers kicked off last week’s action with a 31-0 win over FCS Jacksonville State in a standalone game Wednesday night at the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery, Ala.

The Blazers’ defense allowed just 154 total yards of offense and overcame a minus-2 turnover margin to cover a 16.5-point number in the process.

No. 2 Georgia made a giant statement in Charlotte, easing past now No. 6 Clemson 10-3. It was a game that featured no offensive touchdowns, but tremendous defense, especially on the part of the Bulldogs. It was a performance that harkened back to the days of the “Junkyard Dawg” defense as they limited the Tigers to 2 total rushing yards – just six feet total.

UAB at Georgia odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Georgia 41, UAB 13

Money line

Georgia (-4000) is not going to have a letdown despite the fact they’re facing a very good UAB side that won Conference USA last season. Still, you cannot risk 40 times your potential return. Like the Georgia rapper native, that’s Ludacris…err, ludicrous.

AVOID, and look to the spread instead.

Against the spread

GEORGIA -24.5 (-108) is a strong play. Hidden in the 31-0 win is the minus-2 turnover margin for UAB and if they do that again they are likely to get buried between the hedges.

The Bulldogs defense is suffocating, and the Blazers won’t be able to move the ball much.

Stream college football games on ESPN+ by signing up here.

Over/Under

OVER 45.5 (-110) is the lean here.

Georgia will get its offense cooking with QB JT Daniels after it was stymied against Clemson in their defensive showdown.

Yes, UAB pitched a shutout, but it was against an FCS team and its defense isn’t likely going to do what Clemson did to UGA. Expect Georgia to ramp things up significantly as they improve from the first weekend to the second.

UAB opened with a 31-0 win over FCS Jacksonville State at the Cramton Bowl Wednesday, so they get a few extra days to prepare. The Blazers allowed just 64 rushing yards and 91 passing yards. UAB needs to take better care of the ball after losing a pair of fumbles vs. Jack State.

Georgia grinded out a 10-3 road win over Clemson in a game that featured zero offensive touchdowns. DB Christopher Smith had the big blow with a 74-yard pick-six early in the second quarter to open the scoring. UGA limited Clemson to two total rushing yards and just 178 yards through the air.

UAB vs. Jacksonville State odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Wednesday’s UAB vs. Jacksonville State odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The UAB Blazers meet the Jacksonville State Gamecocks Wednesday in a neutral-site game at the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery Ala. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Below, we look at the UAB vs. Jacksonville State odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

The Blazers managed an impressive 6-3 record last season en route to its second Conference USA championship in the past three seasons. That was the good news. The bad news was they didn’t get to play in a bowl game as their Gasparilla Bowl opponent South Carolina pulled out due to COVID-19 taking a toll on the program, leading to the bowl being canceled.

Jacksonville State went 3-1 last fall, including a 19-10 win over FIU of C-USA. The Gamecocks also played a spring schedule, going an impressive 6-1. Their season concluded with an FCS playoff loss to Delaware 20-14.

UAB vs. Jacksonville State odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

UAB 38, Jacksonville State 16

Money line

Playing UAB (-850) will cost you eight and a half times your potential return in this mid-week opener, and that’s not a recommended play. Over the long term, those type of costly chalky bets will come back to bite you and wash away any gains you have made. It’s a poor long-term strategy.

AVOID and look to the spread instead.

Against the spread

This is a solid mid-tier FBS team in UAB -16.5 (-112) playing an FCS team in Jacksonville State. That alone isn’t the reason to back the defending C-USA champs, however. One has to wonder if the Gamecocks will simply be tired after playing nine games in the spring. There hasn’t been a refractory period, and it will be interesting to see.

Over/Under

The UNDER 51.5 (-112) is worth a small-unit play. UAB is a solid offensive unit, but again, you have to wonder about the conditioning of Jacksonville State. It could start this neutral-site battle a bit on the sluggish side. UAB allowed 16 or fewer points in five of its final seven games last season, and its defense should be sturdy again in 2021, too.

  • Money line: UAB +170 (bet $100 to win $170) | Marshall -210 (bet $210 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: UAB +4.5 (-120) | Marshall -4.5 (+100)
  • Over/Under: 42.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

UAB at Marshall: Three things to know

  1. The Blazers won the West Division of the Conference USA despite losing two of their final three regular-season games, including one non-conference tilt against bowl-bound Louisiana. They also had COVID-19 wipe out the entire month of November, not playing from Oct. 31 to Dec. 12, so they understand adversity.
  2. Marshall wrapped up the East Division and had a high ranking heading into its regular-season finale Dec. 5 against Rice. The Herd were also a tad rusty, having not played since Nov. 14. It showed, as they were blanked 20-0 by the Owls. They ended the regular season 1-3 ATS across their final four after opening 4-0 ATS.
  3. These teams haven’t met since Nov. 22, 2014, in Birmingham. The Thundering Herd registered a 23-18 win as the Under connected that afternoon.

UAB at Marshall: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Marshall 24, UAB 13

Money line (ML)

Marshall (-210) will cost you more than two times your potential return, and the Herd are a risky play since they’re coming off a shutout loss last time out.

PASS.

Against the spread (ATS)

MARSHALL -4.5 (+100) has been champing at the bit to get back on the field after its shutout loss against Rice. Despite that goose egg, the Herd still racked up 424.6 total yards per game for the season, including 190.0 rushing yards per outing, and they were good for 32.8 points per game to rank 37th in the nation.

Defensively is where it’s at for the Herd, as they were No. 2 in the country with 253.9 total yards per game allowed and just 73.0 rushing yards yielded to rank second, too. They were first in the country giving up just 11.4 PPG. The defense is what will get the Thundering Herd to another conference championship.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 42.5 (-110) is a rather low line in this day and age of college football, but Marshall’s defense is sturdy and UAB will have a difficult time moving the ball, especially in Huntington.

The Under is 12-3-1 in UAB’s past 16 as an underdog, including 8-3 in its past 11 as a road dog. The Under is also 5-2 in the past seven head-to-head meetings in this series.
