Colts to sign RB Ty’Son Williams to the practice squad

Ty’Son Williams is expected to sign to the practice squad.

The Indianapolis Colts are expected to sign running back Ty’Son Williams to the practice squad, according to Joel A. Erickson of the Indianapolis Star.

Until these signings are officially announced by the team, they should be taken with a grain of salt. You can follow along with our tracker, keeping up with every signing.

Williams was cut during the final roster cuts Tuesday, but he had a solid preseason with the Colts over the last month. The Colts wound up keeping just three running backs after also cutting Phillip Lindsay.

Williams is an intriguing asset to have because he could certainly hold the role of RB3 in an offense.

Report: Colts cut RB Ty’Son Williams

The Colts are expected to cut RB Ty’Son Williams.

The Indianapolis Colts are expected to release running back Ty’Son Williams ahead of Tuesday’s deadline to reduce the roster to 53 players, according to Joel A. Erickson of the Indianapolis Star.

Williams joined the roster earlier in the offseason and was competing for one of the final spots in the running back room. With Phillip Lindsay also being released before Tuesday’s roster cut deadline, it seems the Colts are only keeping Deon Jackson as the third running back for now.

Colts to get good look at RB depth in preseason finale

Nyheim Hines won’t play in the preseason finale.

The Indianapolis Colts are making the decision to hold running backs Jonathan Taylor and Nyheim Hines out of the preseason finale against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Saturday night.

While we knew Taylor wasn’t going to participate in the preseason games, Hines has been the next man up when the starters have been on the field. Given that this is the final dress rehearsal, the starters will play roughly the first half of the game.

But head coach Frank Reich made the decision to hold Hines out of the preseason finale in order to get a better look at the running back depth.

“I’m going to hold out Nyheim for a variety of reasons. We have some good running backs,” Reich told reporters Thursday. “We want to get a look at all of these guys. We want to make sure these young guys get enough carries. We all know where Nyheim is and what role he’s going to play.”

The Colts are keeping at least three running backs on the active roster, and there’s a good chance they wind up keeping four. Entering the preseason finale, Phillip Lindsay currently leads the way for the RB3 role.

However, the Colts like to use their depth running backs on special teams and since Lindsay hasn’t spent much time in that phase of the game during his career, they might need to keep a fourth on the roster.

That’s where the final three running backs come into play after undrafted rookie C.J. Verdell was waived during the second round of roster cuts.

The battle for the final roster spot in the backfield is between Ty’Son Williams, Deon Jackson and undrafted rookie D’vonte Price.

Williams seems to have the slight lead while Jackson filled the role of RB3 during the second half of the 2021 season. Price has an intriguing skill set but would be considered more undersized than the other two.

The backfield depth is one of the spots that truly has an open competition going into the preseason finale so the Colts should get a good look at the depth here on Saturday night.

Ty’Son Williams scored the first Colts TD of the preseason.

The Indianapolis Colts got their first touchdown of the preseason during the second quarter of Saturday’s opener against the Buffalo Bills by way of a 15-yard reception from running back Ty’Son Williams.

After Nick Foles and Case Keenum traded interceptions on consecutive plays, the Colts took advantage of the new set of downs and capped off the drive with an easy 15-yard touchdown pass to Williams.

7 Colts with the most to gain at training camp

These Colts players have the most to gain during training camp.

The Indianapolis Colts are set to begin training camp in exactly two weeks, and this is where the position battles will start all over the field.

While the foundation of the competitions was laid out during the spring workouts, this is where the winners will emerge. The physical practices of training camp and the performances in the preseason games will go a long way in determining the 53-man roster.

Before training camp arrives, here’s a look at the players with the most to gain:

Colts’ 2022 training camp preview: Running backs

Previewing the Colts backfield entering training camp.

The Indianapolis Colts will be entering training camp later this month boasting one of the best backfields in the entire NFL.

Having the league’s rushing champion from the previous season will help that narrative, but there also are plenty of diverse skill sets on the depth chart. Even though the top spots in the room are locked in, there will be an exciting battle for the one or two spots behind them throughout training camp and the preseason.

Be sure to check out the other position previews ahead of training camp:

With training camp set to arrive July 26, here’s our preview of the running back position:

Former Ravens RB Ty’Son Williams finds new NFL home

Former Ravens running back Ty’Son Williams signed with a new NFL team

The Baltimore Ravens were dealt some bad luck in 2021 when it came to their group of running backs. The team lost their top three backs prior to the start of the season and had to depend on signing veterans from elsewhere to try and get the job done.

During the offseason, Baltimore decided to move on from running back Ty’Son Williams, making the former BYU star a free agent. However, it didn’t take long for him to find a home on a new NFL team. The Indianapolis Colts announced on Tuesday that they signed Williams as well as waiving center Alex Mollette.

Williams has started in three games and played in 13 games during his NFL career. The running back notched one touchdown and 185 yards on 35 carries. He was expected to have a big role following the injuries to Dobbins and Edwards, but after just a few weeks of the 2021 season saw little playing time.

Colts sign RB Ty’Son Williams

Another RB added to the backfield.

The Indianapolis Colts signed running back Ty’Son Williams and waived center Alex Mollette, the team announced Tuesday.

Williams, 25, entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Baltimore Ravens following the 2020 NFL draft. He didn’t see any action during his rookie campaign but saw some work early during the 2021 season.

In 13 games (three starts), Williams took 35 carries for 185 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown while averaging 5.3 yards per carry. He also added nine receptions for 84 receiving yards.

Mollette signed with the Colts as an undrafted free agent following the 2022 NFL draft out of Marshall.

Ty’Son Williams posts message on Instagram after Ravens withdraw his tender

Running back Ty’Son Williams posted a message on Instagram after the Ravens withdrew his tender

The Baltimore Ravens had plenty of depth at running back entering the 2021 season. However, they lost a myriad of their players at the position to injuries including J.K. Dobbins, Gus Edwards and Justice Hill, causing the team to pivot to other options. One of those options was second-year player Ty’Son Williams, who made an impact very early in the year but found himself in head coach John Harbaugh’s doghouse and couldn’t quite find his way out of it for the remainder of the season.

On Tuesday the Ravens decided to withdraw their tender for Williams after signing veteran running back Mike Davis. After the news was announced, Williams took to Instagram and posted a message, saying that he was grateful for being given an opportunity and there’s nothing but love.
