UFC on ESPN 41 video: Tyson Nam counters Ode Osbourne’s flying knee with nasty KO

Tyson Nam made Ode Osbourne pay for getting sloppy with a first-round finish at UFC on ESPN 41.

SAN DIEGO – [autotag]Tyson Nam[/autotag] made [autotag]Ode Osbourne[/autotag] pay for getting sloppy with a first-round finish at UFC on ESPN 41.

Nam (21-12-1 MMA, 3-3 UFC) showed once again that he has big power for the flyweight division when he took advantage of a reckless flying knee attempt from Osbourne (11-5 MMA, 3-3 UFC) on Saturday at Pechanga Arena in San Diego.

Osbourne made the mistake of trying for the same technique multiple times. As a result, Nam timed him, scored a knockdown, and then landed some precise shots to close the show.

Check out the replay of the finish below (via Twitter):

After the fight, Nam said he was thrilled to return from a career-long layoff, and said he had Osbourne scouted.

“19 months in the making,” Nam said in his post-fight interview with Daniel Cormier. “My eyes widened up when he (jumped) the second time, because I knew I had it.”

A flyweight fight has been added to the UFC lineup on June 19.

Hawaii’s [autotag]Tyson Nam[/autotag] and Russia’s [autotag]Tagir Ulanbekov[/autotag] will square off at the UFC Fight Night event, which doesn’t currently have a confirmed location or venue.

Two people with knowledge of the matchup informed MMA Junkie of the booking Wednesday but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

Nam (20-12-1 MMA, 2-3 UFC) lost a split decision to Matt Schnell in January that snapped a two-fight winning streak. Both of his back-to-back victories in that stretch ended by knockout inside the first two rounds.

A teammate and friend of former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, Ulanbekov (12-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) debuted triumphantly in October when he defeated Bruno Silva via unanimous decision. The 29-year-old is currently carrying a four-fight winning streak into his sophomore promotional outing.

With the addition to the card, the June 19 event now includes:

  • Matt Brown vs. Dhiego Lima
  • Virna Jandiroba vs. Kanako Murata
  • Roque Martinez vs. Josh Parisian
  • Bruno Silva vs. Wellington Turman

UFC on ESPN 20 results: Matt Schnell sticks and moves his way to split decision over Tyson Nam

Matt Schnell showcased his sharpened boxing skills as he smartly boxed his way to a win over Tyson Nam at UFC on ESPN 20.

After more than a year away from the octagon, and after two prior bookings fell by the wayside, [autotag]Matt Schnell[/autotag] returned and got back to his winning ways on Fight Island.”

Schnell (15-5 MMA, 5-3 UFC) edged past [autotag]Tyson Nam[/autotag] on the scorecards in their main-card bout at UFC on ESPN 20, which took place at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, as the Shreveport, La., native showed his boxing skills en route to a split decision victory.

Nam (20-12-1 MMA, 2-3 UFC) calmly took the center of the cage and looked for openings as Schnell fired off some range-finding jabs and kicks. Then, after a few kicks of his own, Nam started to let his hands go and immediately scored with a slick left-right combination.

However, it was Schnell who settled into his rhythm, and the 31-year-old continued to beat Nam to the punch, though Nam appeared untroubled by his opponent’s strikes and responded to one exchange with a solid left hook. Schnell kept the pressure on, however, and appeared to briefly stun Nam with a rapid combination as his faster, more frequent punches started to cause the 37-year-old a few issues toward the end of Round 1.

[lawrence-related id=581922,581901]

Schnell started Round 2 in the same way he finished Round 1, by sticking and moving, beating Nam to the punch, and connecting regularly. But Nam started to up the intensity and loosened Schnell’s mouthpiece when a solid right hand found its mark. However, it was Schnell’s strikes that appeared to have the greater effect as the cumulative damage from “Danger’s” strikes started to show on Nam’s face.

Perhaps sensing that the fight was drifting away from him past the midway mark, the Hawaiian bit down on his mouthpiece and let fly in the final seconds of the round. But, despite connecting with a couple of clean shots, Nam was unable to knock Schnell out of his stride.

Round 3 saw both men up the pace, with Nam, in particular, looking to raise his intensity as he started to stalk Schnell around the cage. While Nam increased his strike count, Schnell got on his bike and ensured he stayed on the move as he continued picking off his man on the way in.

Eventually the bout went all the way to the scorecards, with the judges scoring it 28-29, 29-28, 29-28 to give Schnell the victory.

UFC’s Tyson Nam hopes knockout of Matt Schnell leads to Joseph Benavidez matchup

“I just always liked the thought of punching Joseph Benavidez in the face.”

When his fight with [autotag]Matt Schnell[/autotag] fell through, [autotag]Tyson Nam[/autotag] had a specific name in mind.

Nam (20-11-1 MMA, 2-2 UFC) was hoping to draw multiple-time title challenger [autotag]Joseph Benavidez[/autotag] instead, but his fight with Schnell (14-5 MMA, 4-3 UFC) wound up getting rebooked for UFC Fight Night on Jan. 20.

The hard-hitting Hawaiian explains that his callout of Benavidez (28-7 MMA, 15-5 UFC) was about more than just facing one of the division’s most notable names.

“I personally called out Joseph Benavidez,” Nam told MMA Junkie Radio. “I thought that would be a meaningful fight for myself that he actually fought two of my friends that he beat, but I guess the UFC really liked this matchup between Matt Schnell and I and decided to give him another go at it.”

He continued, “I carry a lot of personal pride with my friends, my family. I just always liked the thought of punching Joseph Benavidez in the face. He’s the nicest guy, and he’s really good and myself as a competitor, I love competition and that would be competition at his finest. Especially to test myself because I believe that’s where I should stand and should be at the top of the flyweight division.”

After dropping his first two UFC bouts by unanimous decision, Nam rebounded emphatically with two straight knockouts of Zarrukh Adashev and Jerome Rivera. He plans on scoring another finish over Schnell then calling out Benavidez.

But with Benavidez currently slated to face Askar Askarov on March 6 at UFC 259, Nam understands that he likely may have to move on from the matchup.

“I knock out Matt Schnell, three in a row, I want Joseph Benavidez,” Nam said. “I want to make that four in a row. I’m still very adamant about that callout, but I know he does have a date with Askarov, so I might have to choose another dance partner if Jan. 20 works out in my favor.”
