WATCH: Paulson Adebo bags his second interception in two games

Paulson Adebo bagged his second interception in two games, extending his hold on the Saints’ team lead:

Whew. Paulson Adebo is playing at a very high level right now — and he built on his team lead with another interception on Sunday against the Chicago Bears, his second takeaway in as many games.

The New Orleans Saints cornerback correctly read Bears quarterback Tyson Bagent’s intentions while dropping back in a Cover-2 defense; when the ball funneled his way, Adebo jumped the receiver’s route to pluck it out of the air. Bagent was looking for his tight end Cole Kmet, who caught a touchdown pass on the opening drive with Tyrann Mathieu in coverage, but Adebo made a play this time.

Adebo now leads the Saints with three interceptions on the year, putting him inside the top-10 among defenders leaguewide. Coverage penalties were a problem for Adebo earlier in the season but, to his credit, he’s cleaned things up and is now playing like the Saints’ best defensive back. He’s also forced and recovered a fumble this season. They’ll need more big plays from Adebo to get back to a winning record.

Fantasy Football: Quarterback starts and sits for Week 9

We look across the league and tell you which quarterbacks to start and which ones to leave on the bench heading into Week 9.

Starts and sits is here to help fantasy managers make those all important last minute lineup decisions .While we won’t tell you about obvious starts such as Tua Tagovailoa or Jalen Hurts, we will find players you may be waffling about and help you make a decision.

Let’s look at quarterbacks for Week 9.

Saints vs. Bears: 5 biggest storylines in Week 9 game

The Saints pursuit of a repeat performance and the impact Justin Field’s continued absence are the biggest storylines in Saints vs Bears

The New Orleans Saints welcome the Chicago Bears into the Caesar’s Superdome after a quality win over the Indianapolis Colts a week ago. Derek Carr had arguably his best game of the season and appropriately was highlighted by a deep shot to Rashid Shaheed.

Coming into this game there are some questions and storylines to watch on both sides of the ball. The offense is looking towards their stars like Chris Olave to continue this performance, while the defense should crush the Bears offense. Chicago has also highlighted how difficult it is to play in New Orleans. All of these are storylines you must pay attention to in preparation for Saints vs. Bears.

Josh McDaniels’ 5 most humiliating Raiders losses, including a defeat to Jeff Saturday

Josh McDaniels’ Raiders tenure had a disaster every week, but some were worse than others.

Josh McDaniels came, saw, and did not conquer with the Las Vegas Raiders.

On Wednesday, the organization fired McDaniels, arguably the NFL’s worst head coach, along with general manager, Dave Ziegler. After Jon Gruden, McDaniels is now the second sideline leader the Raiders are paying not to coach the team. Now, Las Vegas is back at square one while making it abundantly clear that Mark Davis’s organization is a coaching graveyard.

That got me thinking.

What was the most excruciating part of McDaniels’ embarrassing tenure in Las Vegas? Was it blowing five double-digit leads for losses? What about the “ingenious” offensive mind overseeing a team that failed to score 20 points in nine of his last 10 games? I personally loved watching a coach who made it unclear whether he was actively sabotaging his own team. There’s honestly so much McDaniels disaster to choose from, it boggles the mind.

In just 25 short Las Vegas games, McDaniels turned himself into the NFL’s preeminent punching bag. And deservedly so. Let’s rank the worst moments (i.e., losses) of a coaching job that never went anywhere.

2023 Power Rankings Roundup, Week 9: Where Chargers stand after win over Bears

Here is what the national media thinks of the Chargers after their win over the Bears.

The Chargers are coming off a primetime win over the Bears.

Here is what the national media thinks of the Bolts ahead of Week 9:

USA Today: 14 (Previous: 21)

“The juice has returned to the offense, largely thanks to the life that’s returned to Austin Ekeler’s legs. Sunday night, he became the first running back in the Super Bowl era (since 1966) to amass 30 TD receptions with one team.”

Touchdown Wire: 14 (Previous: 15)

“Speaking of the Chargers, if they played the Bears every week, they’d be the best team in football. If they can get to 4-4, their playoff hopes will stay alive.”

NFL: 18 (Previous: 22)

“Justin Herbert and Brandon Staley suggested after defeating the Bears that this was exactly the kind of win the Chargers needed, and I absolutely agree — from a confidence standpoint. Sometimes you need to open it up on the highway; Herbert and the passing game certainly did that Sunday night, even if the run game still lags behind. But let’s keep the big picture in mind here. The Chargers are still swimming upstream at 3-4 (and 1-3 in the conference), and I am not convinced that taking down Chicago and a Division-II rookie QB making his second NFL start was the get-right event that immediately veers the season back on course. The Bolts face mostly tough defenses from here on out (if you believe the Broncos are fixed) and will need their own defense to tighten several screws.”

CBS Sports: 14 (Previous: 18)

“That Chargers team we saw against the Bears is the one we expect to see with all that talent. But consistency is always an issue with that team.”

ESPN: 15 (Previous: 18)

Team QBR: 69.6 (4th)

“The Chargers made Justin Herbert the highest-paid player in franchise history in the offseason after three seasons that established Herbert as one of the best in the NFL at the position. But his play this season has fluctuated between spectacular and dreadful. After a fractured left middle finger in Week 4, Herbert had one of the worst three-game stretches of his career, with missed throws and career lows in yards and completions. Herbert returned to form in Week 8, a blowout win over the Bears in which he completed his first 15 passes and finished with no interceptions for the first time since Week 3.”

Yahoo Sports: 14 (Previous: 17)

“Austin Ekeler looked healthy for the first time since he suffered an ankle injury early this season. He had 123 total yards. He can add an element to the Chargers’ offense that has been missing.”

The Athletic: 15 (Previous: 23)

Something scary (for others): Joey Bosa could be getting there.

“The veteran defensive lineman hasn’t looked like himself in a while, but he had a season-high five pressures against the Bears, and his pressure percentage (23.5) was his second-highest of the season. Bosa has four sacks this year and only 6 1/2 in the last two seasons, but if he can get back to his 2020 form (10 1/2 sacks), it’ll be a boost for a Chargers defense that needs some help.”

Saints open as big favorites over the struggling Bears in Week 9

The New Orleans Saints opened as big favorites over the struggling Chicago Bears in Week 9:

Coming off their best offensive performance of the season, the New Orleans Saints open as huge favorites over the Chicago Bears. BetMGM Sportsbook favored the Saints by 7.5 points when lines opened on Monday, with a 41-point over/under forecasting a final score in the neighborhood of New Orleans 24, Chicago 17.

This spread likely has more to do with it being a home game against an incomplete Bears squad, rather than an overreaction to the offensive performance against the Colts last week. The Bears are currently 2-6 and without their star quarterback Justin Fields. Tyson Bagent has started the last two games for the Bears and they walked away with a victory in one of their games thanks to a dominant run game performance.

The Saints improved to 4-4 last week and sit tied for first in the NFC South. Can the offense keep it up and walk away with another big victory?

Bears fans were appreciative of Khalil Mack’s honest assessment of Tyson Bagent and Justin Fields

Khalil Mack seems to respect Justin Fields much more than the Bears do.

The story of Sunday Night Football was not the Los Angeles Chargers cruising to their third win of the 2023 season.

It was about the Chicago Bears quarterback situation — one Cris Collinsworth repeatedly played up as a “controversy.” Sunday evening saw rookie Tyson Bagent make his second career NFL start. Predictably, with tape available, Bagent sputtered as the Chargers didn’t let the former Division II player beat them. At the same time, an injured Justin Fields was on the Bears’ sideline (while weirdly wearing sunglasses) watching Bagent try and fail to overcome the L.A. defense.

After the game, former Bears star Khalil Mack — now a vital member of the Chargers’ defense — shared a fair and honest assessment of Chicago’s quarterbacks.

While he politely said Bagent would be “special,” Mack also expressed appreciation that he nor his teammates had to face the electric Fields and all the game-breaking opportunities he presents. It’s hard to disagree with the perennial Pro Bowl defender:

Mack’s assessment of Bagent is, frankly, a little anodyne.

Players will rarely not compliment someone they just played against. I don’t have enough fingers to count the number of times I’ve seen a professional athlete throw out entirely empty praise. What is far more notable is Mack expressing his evident fear and respect of Fields, one of the NFL’s finest big-play machines. In his absence, it’s obvious the Bears have missed that extra little something Fields brings to the table.

If stalwart defenders like Mack have noticed, then it’s worth wondering whether Bears brass should give Fields more time to prove himself when he’s finally healthy again.

Bears to start backup QB Tyson Bagent against Saints in Week 9

The Bears will start backup QB Tyson Bagent against the Saints in Week 9 while Justin Fields recovers from an injury:

The New Orleans Saints are getting a lucky break against the Chicago Bears this Sunday, with the Bears starting that backup quarterback Tyson Bagent will start, not Justin Fields. Head coach Matt Eberflus announced the news in a Monday afternoon appearance on the Waddle & Silvy Show on ESPN 1000. Fields has been sidelined by an injury to his throwing hand after dislocating his thumb.

Bagent did enough for the Bears to win his first start two weeks ago, but he was limited to just 232 yards with two interceptions by the Los Angeles Chargers this past Sunday. The former college standout at Division-II Shepherd University has looked the part at times but a strong pass defense like the Saints’ squad should challenge him.

Bears rookie Tyson Bagent will start Week 9 against Saints

Bears starter Justin Fields remains “week to week,” per Matt Eberflus, and it’ll be Tyson Bagent making his third NFL start vs. Saints.

The Tyson Bagent era will continue for at least another week as the Chicago Bears prepare for the New Orleans Saints in Week 9.

Bears head coach Matt Eberflus appeared on the Waddle & Silvy Show on ESPN 1000 on Monday afternoon, where he announced Bagent will once again get the starting nod.

Eberflus also noted that starting quarterback Justin Fields remains week-to-week with a dislocated right thumb injury. Fields was seen on the sidelines during the Bears’ Week 8 game against the Los Angeles Chargers, sporting tape on the thumb.

Bagent made his second straight start on Sunday, completing 25 of 37 passes for 232 yards and two interceptions. The former Division-II standout once again looked comfortable, airing it out on the first play of the game for 41 yards to wide receiver Darnell Mooney.

He had the two big errors, but the first interception looked like a miscommunication between Bagent and receiver DJ Moore. The second came late in the game when the Bears had to be more aggressive down 30-7.

The Bears and Saints are set for a 12 p.m. CT kickoff from New Orleans on Sunday, Nov. 5.
