Cowboys Inactives: Tyron Smith officially in, Browns Vernon to play

The seven-time Pro Bowler is back in action for Dallas ahead of a tough matchup.

The Dallas Cowboys will have their left tackle back in a crucial matchup with one of the game’s best pass rushers. A day after losing La’el Collins for the season, Tyron Smith will put the uniform back on for the first time since Week 1, allowing Dallas to at least have one of their stalwarts to face off against Myles Garrett and the Cleveland Browns.

Dallas has announced their inactives list for the week and Smith is not on it. The Cowboys will have four active tackles for the game, with Brandon Knight, Terence Steele and Eric Smith available as well. Dallas will also have promising UDFA linebacker Francis Bernard active, after he was elevated to the active roster on Friday. It will be interesting to see if the youngster from Utah will see any defensive action, or just play on special teams.

Last week, Joe Thomas and Jaylon Smith played all of the defensive snaps.

As for the Browns, most of their questionable guys will give it a go, including defenders Olivier Vernon and Denzel Ward.

Cowboys News: Key starters to play, Aldon dominant, more touches for Pollard?

Tyron Smith, DeMarcus Lawrence, and Trevon Diggs are all expected to play Sunday. Aldon Smith currently leads the NFL in sacks.

The 2020 NFL season has been an injury-filled one for the Dallas Cowboys. However, per team owner Jerry Jones, starters Tyron Smith, DeMarcus Lawrence, and Trevon Diggs are all expected to play this Sunday vs the Cleveland Browns despite limited practice time this week. After five years away from the league, former All-Pro defensive end Aldon Smith is currently leading the NFL in sacks and looks like he hasn’t missed a beat.

If the Cowboys can establish a lead against the Browns Sunday, maybe second-year running back Tony Pollard can see more touches than the four rushing attempts he’s had in the first three games. The Cowboys defense will not only have to face Odell Beckham and Jarvis Landry in the passing game but also Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt toting the rock. Predictions for Cowboys-Browns, Dak Prescott’s continued progression, and when will Mike McCarthy start showing he’s an upgrade at head coach and more are covered in the news and notes.

Final Injury Report: Jones expects several key Cowboys vs Browns

Tyron Smith, DeMarcus Lawrence, and Trevon Diggs are expected to play Sunday vs the Cleveland Browns after limited practice time this week.

The Dallas Cowboys have been bombarded with injuries so far in the first three weeks of the 2020 NFL season. Sean Lee, Leighton Vander Esch, La’el Collins, Anthony Brown, and Chidobe Awuzie are all currently on injured reserve. However, with a crucial contest against the Cleveland Browns on the horizon, the first of a three-game homestand, the Cowboys got some good injury news via team owner Jerry Jones. He told 105.3 The Fan on Friday morning that he expects Tyron Smith, DeMarcus Lawrence, and Trevon Diggs to play this Sunday, saying “It’s certainly looking like we’ll have them available.”

The Browns themselves have several players out this week. Adrian Clayborn, who once tormented the Cowboys with six sacks in 2017, is out with a hip injury. Joining him are linebacker Tae Davis and cornerback Greedy Williams. Running back Kareem Hunt, guard Joe Bitonio, linebacker Jacob Phillips, defensive end Olivier Vernon, and cornerback Denzel Ward are all questionable for Sunday after limited practice participation on Friday. Center Nick Harris is also questionable but didn’t practice.

Clayborn took advantage of the Cowboys’ lack of Smith in a game with Atlanta, causing havoc in the backfield and notching six of the Falcons’ eight sacks of Prescott. The Cowboys QB was seeing pass-rushing ghosts for several weeks after that game. Now, Clayborn will miss the first chance the two would have to tango again, and Smith seems likely to be available.

It was revealed Smith was suffering from neck stingers after an injury in practice on September 17. He finally returned to practice in a limited fashion on Thursday. Smith has missed at least three games in each of the previous four seasons. With two games already missed in 2020, the Cowboys are hopeful that him being on the injury report for this season has come to an end.

Lawrence has been dealing with a knee issue since last week where he missed practice on Wednesday and Thursday, which he repeated this week as well. Nonetheless, the former All-Pro will be on the field searching for his first sack of the season on Sunday. Lawrence hasn’t recorded a full sack since Week 9 of last season and only has a half-sack since, which occurred in Week 13.

Diggs has been battling knee and shoulder injuries this week and has been limited in practice. However, he’ll make the fourth consecutive start of his rookie campaign. He’s had his fair share of rookie struggles, which is expected, but he competes on every down, as was seen with his heads play to prevent a touchdown by DK Metcalf of the Seattle Seahawks last week.

Diggs has been on the field for all of the Cowboys 224 defensive snaps this season.

This is the kind of good news the Cowboys want to hear as they look to even their record at 2-2 and stay atop the NFC East.

Cowboys News: Dak’s offense ‘explosive’ but isn’t living up to potential

The Dallas Cowboys news round-up ahead of their matchup with the Browns, including an injury update, predictions, and analysis from Week 3.

The Cowboys may not be off to the best start as a team, but Dak Prescott has looked worthy of every penny of his inevitable payday after the season. The 27-year old is on pace for over 6,000 yards, he’s finding the endzone, and he’s putting Dallas in position to have a shot in every game so far. Despite Prescott’s stellar play, the Cowboys defense and special teams haven’t held up their end of the bargain, explaining the Cowboy’s 1-2 record.

Injuries have also played a factor in the early season, and Week 4 is no different. While the Cowboys should have DeMarcus Lawrence against the Browns, Tyron Smith is questionable yet again, and the Browns have their fair share of players banged up. Smith’s status is as important to the Cowboys as anyone not named Prescott, especially considering fellow tackle La’el Collins’ return is further than previously predicted. Find the full injury report, Week 4 predictions, and analysis on the Cowboys three games so far.

Thursday Injury Report: Cowboys’ Smith progressing, Browns’ Beckham limited

An injury update for the Cowboys and Browns, including the status of Tyron Smith, DeMarcus Lawrence, and Trevon Diggs.

The Dallas Cowboys have been tormented by injuries through the first three games of the 2020 season. Fortunately two crucial, injured linemen in  Tyron Smith and DeMarcus Lawrence are progressing this week.

Lawrence didn’t practice for the second straight day as he has dealing with a knee injury that he suffered in the Week 2 win against Atlanta, but the team is expecting the defensive end will be suiting up for Sunday’s matchup with the Browns. Meanwhile Smith was upgraded from a DNP to Limited in Thursday’s work. Meanwhile, Cleveland is nursing a pretty extensive injury report for the day and that includes wideout Odell Beckhman, Jr. being limited with a back injury.

Head coach Mike McCarthy had this to say about Lawrence’s availability during a virtual press conference on Thursday: “He’ll take very little (reps) if any today. But I don’t think he’s in jeopardy. I anticipate him to kind of go through the week like he did last week. So we’ll see what today brings.”

Lawrence has played just 39 percent of the Cowboys’ defensive snaps since the season opener, way down from the roughly 65 percent of defensive snaps that he played in 2018 and 2019.

Despite not missing a game this season, the injury has clearly impacted the former Pro-Bowler’s abilities to stay, and produce, on the field. Lawrence’s one quarterback pressure through three weeks pale in comparison to the seven that the end accumulated through the same timespan just a season ago.

The Dallas defense doesn’t just need Lawrence to play, they need him to return to his dominant form that he’s played at in the past, if they want to have any chance of consistently slowing down the better offenses in the league.

On the other side of the trenches, Smith seems in line to line up for the first time since Week 1.

Smith was able to participate in individual drills during Wednesday’s practice, the most he had down in a Cowboys uniform since September 17 and seemed to duplicate the effort on Thursday.

It remains to be seen if Smith can give it a go this upcoming Sunday, but there is more optimism surrounding the topic than in the two previous weeks.

Smith’s return would be monumental for a Cowboys offensive line that has been unstable, to say the least. Fellow star tackle, La’el Collins, is yet to play this season and his return date, if there is a return, is yet to be determined.

According to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys have already used a staggering five different offensive line combinations, none of which have played up the standard of Dallas O-Lines of recent history.

If Smith is active Sunday, the Cowboys will decide between Brandon Knight and Terrence Steele for the right tackle spot. Based on their performances in each players short career it seems likely that Knight would get the nod over Steele. However, if Smith needs more time before he can play, Knight would once again man the left side, while Steele would slot back into the right tackle role.

Guard Zack Martin spent some second half of Dallas Week 3 loss to Seattle at right tackle, after Steele exited with an illness, and Martin did  extremely well, as expected. Martin made it clear that he’s back to playing guard, but the future Hall of Famer is ready for anything necessary.

Rookie cornerback Trevon Diggs popped up on the injury report as well, but it feels similar to last week, when the Cowboys took it easy on Diggs during the week and he played a full workload of snaps on Sunday.

The Cleveland Browns are dealing with their fair share of important ailments ahead of their trip to Dallas this weekend.

Beckham Jr appeared on his first injury report of the week with a back injury. Assuming he is able to play, he star wideout is set to match up with the Cowboys for the first time since leaving the Giants in 2018.

One of the better guards in the league, Joel Bitonio, was limited for the Browns on Thursday (back) but was an upgrade from his DNP on Wednesday.

Similarly to Bitonio, cornerback Denzel Ward (groin) was limited Thursday following a no show in practice the day before.

Running back Kareem Hunt (groin), safety Ronnie Harrison (illness), defensive end Adrian Clayborn (hip) were among the notable absences from Thursday’s practice in Cleveland.

Week 4 Injury Report: Cowboys Smith works some, Browns missing many

The Cowboys returned to practice on Wednesday with a fresh new look at the weekly injury report. No real surprises, yet.

The Dallas Cowboys returned to practice on Wednesday in preparation for their Week 4 game as they return home to face the Cleveland Browns. With a new week of game planning comes a fresh new look at the Cowboys injury report headed into Sunday.

Starting left tackle Tyron Smith missed another practiced today but worked off to the side for the first time since September 17. Smith has missed the last two games due to a neck injury and has his eyes set to return during this upcoming home stand for the Cowboys.

The Cowboys also look for relief in the secondary considering how much the team struggled against the Seahawks in Week 3. Cornerback Anthony Brown, who is dealing with a rib injury, was off to the side doing conditioning work. Fellow cornerback Chidobe Awuzie was also seen doing conditioning work as he deals with a hamstring injury. Both Anthony and Awuzie are on injured reserve. Wide receiver Ventell Bryant continues to put in work as well as he gets closer to making his season debut.

Cowboys fans everywhere are also salivating waiting for the 2020 debut of defensive end Randy Gregory. Gregory continues to do work off to the side and is now eligible to begin joining team practices one week from today.

The only member of the team not participating in the individual drills portion of practice was defensive end Demarcus Lawrence. It’s been reported that Lawrence is dealing with a slight knee injury.

As for the Dallas Cowboys opponents this week, the Cleveland Browns have a little bit more of a detailed injury report to kick off this week’s practices. It’s important to note that corner back Denzel Ward, running back Kareem Hunt, linebacker Tae Davis, defensive end Adrian Clayborn and guard Joel Bitonio all did not practice today.

Check back in the coming days to monitor both team’s injury reports going forward towards Sunday’s 1 PM match up at AT&T Stadium.

Stephen Jones updates on Tyron, Collins and lack of outreach to street DBs

The injuries to two of the best Dallas Cowboys offensive linemen continue to plague the team while the secondary is a mess.

The offensive line for the Dallas Cowboys is often talked about in hushed and reverent tones. Now only the hushed tones remain, like loved ones huddled around a death bed. Okay, it’s not that serious, but the position that once paved the way for an explosive offense is now being dragged by it, and the reinforcements might not be on the way back yet.

La’el Collins and Tyron Smith are two of the best tackles in all of football. They have combined to play one game in 2020. Collins remains on injured reserve while Smith remains in a perpetual state of “game-time decision.” Stephen Jones took to 105.3 The Fan’s airwaves to discuss that and more.

It’s possible Smith returns to the field against the Cleveland Browns in Week 4, but his long-term health will seemingly be a question moving forward. He’s missed three games each of the last three years.

Collins, on the other hand, is just as concerning in the here and now. There’s been rumblings that he showed up to camp in poor shape and ultimately was injured because of it, and the COO’s comments do nothing to assuage the fear that he’ll be out longer than originally anticipated.

“He’s just working with a couple of issues that he’s trying to get right. As we said, didn’t want to get in specifics in terms of exactly what his injury is or injuries are, but working through all that with him, trying to get him in a place where he can get himself ready to play at a high level again.”

In the game, the Cowboys ended up moving All-Pro right guard Zack Martin out to tackle due to in-game injuries. That’s not something Jones believes will be the norm.

“No, I think when Tyron gets back we’ll have Knight and Steele. Should be back 100%…  But those guys coming back, I think getting Zack Martin back in at his usual spot. I think we’re a better group that way.”

In other news, for those hoping for a certain safety to be brought into the fold to solve the secondary’s woes, think again.

Jones  spoke on how the unit performed on Sunday, with Seahawks receivers roaming free everywhere one looked. “I feel like they had their moments. You got to give credit to Russell Wilson. He’s probably playing maybe the highest level in the NFL at the quarterback position. He’s able to buy time and give his receivers time, get open down the field. At times, we had some tough moments, but at times we played really well.”

“I do think this is a work in progress and defense more so than offense because we are working into a new systems with Coach Nolan and his staff and really figuring the players out and the system out and I do think this is going to come around. Each half is like we make our adjustments at halftime, and we play much better defense in the second half. So, I think this is going to come around in due time.”

The Cowboys are going to make due with what they have on an injury-riddled roster. The holes along the offensive line will be plugged internally while the holes in the secondary will likely continue to be filled with opposing wide receivers.

The Dallas Cowboys are once again going to start a pair of UDFAs at the tackle position against the Seattle Seahawks, as seven-time Pro Bowler Tyron Smith is set to miss his second consecutive game with neck stingers. Brandon Knight, who filled in admirably in Week 2 against the Atlanta Falcons, will once again get the nod at left tackle. Meanwhile rookie UDFA Terence Steele will get start No. 3 on the opposite end with RT La’el Collins on injured reserve.

Meanwhile some good news on the defensive side of the ball. DeMarcus Lawrence, who missed the second half of last week with a knee ailment and missed time in practice this week, is set to give it a go at left defensive end. All eyes will be on he and Everson Griffen, as the belief is Mike Nolan has backed off his plan to have the two operate out of the two-point stance.

In a bit of a surprise, rookie third-round defensive tackle Neville Gallimore seems to be a healthy scratch unless there was a late injury that has yet to be reported. Gallimore saw just 20 snaps in the first two games of the season.

On the opposite sideline, the biggest news is that corner Quinton Dunbar will be out. The big offseason signing will not be able to help in trying to contain a Cowboys attack that’s put up 40 points over their last three quarters.

Injury Update: Smith, Lawrence questionable vs Seahawks, Collins Week 4 already in danger

An injury update for the Dallas Cowboys, including news on La’el Collins, Tyron Smith, Trevon Diggs, and DeMarcus Lawrence.

It appears it could still be multiple weeks until the Dallas Cowboys have their two top tackles back in action.

The Cowboys right tackle, La’el Collins, is eligible to return from the injured reserve following the Cowboys Week 3 matchup with the Seahawks, but, according to reports from Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News (via Blogging The Boys), the team isn’t counting on having Collins available for Week 4.

Collins emerged as one of the best tackles in the league last season, but found himself on the IR with a hip injury and conditioning issues before 2020 could even get underway.

Tyron Smith, the Cowboys left tackle, is questionable to play in Sunday’s upcoming game against Seattle. Smith missed the Cowboys home opener against Atlanta with a neck injury. Smith has battled similar injuries for years now, so the team is taking extra precautions with his situation.

Gelhken reported via Twitter that Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy said both Collins and Smith are “making progress,” but that Smith’s ability to practice Saturday would reveal more about his game-time status.

If Smith is unable to play, Dallas will likely roll out the same tackle combination that started versus the Falcons; Brandon Knight at left tackle, and Terrence Steele at right tackle.

Steele, an undrafted rookie, has started both games on the right side of the line for the Cowboys this season and has struggled. He’s given up a sack, and seven QB pressures and been called for three penalties in the two weeks.

Knight played his first game of left tackle since high school in Week 2, according to the broadcast, but did a fine job filling in for the injured Smith. Through two weeks Knight’s 96 percent pass block win rate is tied for eighth best in the NFL, coincidentally tied with the player he’s replacing, Smith.

One game for Knight this year is obviously a small sample size, but the second-year tackle also made the most of his fill-in start at right tackle in 2019 when Collins missed a game.

If, however, Smith is able to suit and play against Seattle, Knight could replace Steele as the right tackle until Collins returns, which could now potentially be Week 5.

Defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence is also questionable for Sunday with a knee problem. Lawrence missed both Wednesday and Thursday’s practices, but was limited on Friday, thus making him questionable. Lawrence figured to be a crucial piece towards slowing down a scorching Seahawk offense.

Lawrence’s absence would mean a full workload for Cowboy newcomers Everson Griffen and Aldon Smith. Dorance Armstrong would be the next in line to receive Lawrence’s snaps, and rookie Bralee Anae’s snaps should increase from his three snaps in Week 2. Veteran Tyrone Crawford also possess the versatility to help out on the edge, despite playing defensive tackle as well this season.

Second-round rookie cornerback Trevon Diggs, a bright spot for the Dallas defense through two games, was listed on the injury report earlier in the week but his status is seemingly no longer in question; he’s ready to play.

Fellow corner Chidobe Awuzie has been already been ruled out for the Cowboys with a hamstring injury, and reports are that Awuzie will miss more than just this one week.

Smith and Lawrence’s status’ will be closely monitored as the Cowboys third game quickly approaches.

Seattle is coming into this highly anticipated contest less than 100 percent as well. Earlier this week Seattle placed defensive end Bruce Irvin, wide receiver Phillip Dorsett, and defensive back Marquise Blair on the IR.

Defensive end Rasheem Green will also be out, and the status of two key Seahawks is still uncertain.

Starting defensive end and former Cowboy Benson Mayowa (groin), and starting defensive back Quinton Dunbar (knee), are both offically listed as questionable. Mayowa was limited in practice Friday while Dunbar did not participate.
