Texans QB Tyrod Taylor expected to miss four weeks due to hamstring injury

The Houston Texans will be without the services of QB Tyrod Taylor for the next four weeks due to a hamstring injury.

HOUSTON —The Houston Texans may be without Tyrod Taylor for the next four weeks.

According to Aaron Wilson of Sports Talk 790, the Texans starting quarterback will miss four weeks with a grade two hamstring strain he sustained during Sunday’s 31-21 loss at the Cleveland Browns. Rookie quarterback Davis Mills will likely start all four games for the Texans in Taylor’s absence.

During his media availability Monday morning, coach David Culley said he believes Taylor suffered the injury amid his 15-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter. According to Culley, Taylor did not want to exit the game at halftime, insisting he was okay.

“That’s who he is,” running back Phillip Lindsay said. “If it ain’t broke all the way, this guy is going to try to find a way to be out there, and that’s why you respect him. He’s built for it, and to be able to show that toughness for his team and his leadership, you respect that from your quarterback for sure.”

In addition to Mills, the Texans will likely elevate quarterback Jeff Driskel from the practice squad. Three-time Pro Bowler Deshaun Watson will remain deactivated despite Taylor’s loss.

Browns DE Myles Garrett remarks on Texans QB Tyrod Taylor leaving the game

Cleveland Browns DE Myles Garrett had a remark when Houston Texans QB Tyrod Taylor, a former teammate, left at halftime of the 31-21 loss.

The Houston Texans played two different quarterbacks amid their 31-21 loss to the Cleveland Browns Sunday afternoon at FirstEnergy Stadium.

Quarterback Tyrod Taylor left with a hamstring injury, and did not return after halftime, despite a 10-11 for 125 yards and a touchdown effort. In his place was third-round rookie Davis Mills, who went 8-of-18 for 102 yards, a touchdown, and an interception.

Browns defensive end Myles Garrett, who finished with four combined tackles, shared his reaction to Taylor not returning after the game with reporters.

“I must have took a lot out of him when I tried to chase him down,” Garrett said and then smiled.

According to Texans coach David Culley, the injury occurred when Taylor rolled to his left with 30 seconds in the first half. Taylor heaved the ball out of bounds as he was being pressured, and the play was nullified anyway due to an offensive holding on Geron Christian, who filling in at left tackle due to an injury to Laremy Tunsil.

Taylor was with the Browns in 2018 during Garrett’s second season in the NFL. Cleveland had a 1-1-1 record with Taylor under center that year. An injury in Week 3 led to then-rookie Baker Mayfield taking over, and he hasn’t looked back since.

Similarly, the Texans may have to turn to a rookie quarterback in Week 3 with Mills.

Garrett did express that he hoped both the Texans and Browns could get their injured players from Week 2 back sooner than later.

“Guys were just going down,” said Garrett. “It was a physical game. It was gritty, and it was fun. A lot of guys trying to get after it and just try to do their job best they can. Injuries happen. Just hope they are not long term.”

The Texans turn around quickly to host the Carolina Panthers on Thursday Night Football at NRG Stadium.

Twitter reacts to the Texans’ 31-21 loss to the Browns

The Houston Texans generated sundry reactions from Twitter after their 31-21 loss to the Cleveland Browns in Week 2.

The Houston Texans lost 31-21 to the Cleveland Browns Sunday afternoon at FirstEnergy Stadium, falling to 1-1 on the season.

Weirdly, given the results across the AFC South with the Denver Broncos beating the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Tennessee Titans getting a win over the Seattle Seahawks, and the Los Angeles Rams getting a win over the Indianapolis Colts, Houston is still in the mix of things in their division.

The biggest reaction came when quarterback Tyrod Taylor was injured. The former 2015 Pro Bowler went into the locker room at halftime, and out came rookie quarterback Davis Mills in his place. Taylor’s day was summarily finished with a hamstring injury, and it was disappointing given he went 10-of-11 for 125 yards and a touchdown along with rushing for a 15-yard score.

The “Turn Up for Watt” boys had a reasonable take on the second half.

On the postgame show on the Texans Radio Network, Clint Stoerner was championing the work of Mills in relief, who went 8-of-18 for 102 yards, a touchdown, and an interception, and the fans weren’t having any of it.

Some fans aren’t giving up on Mills just yet.

Texans fans are looking for some excitement and maybe one last shot at being competitive before packing it in for 2021. Get ready for more tweets like these.

It is a short week for the Texans as they go home to host the Carolina Panthers for Thursday Night Football Sept. 23 at NRG Stadium.

Report: Chargers QB Tyrod Taylor expected to miss Week 4 vs. Buccaneers

Chargers rookie quarterback Justin Herbert will get the start against the Buccaneers.

Chargers rookie quarterback Justin Herbert is making his second consecutive start Sunday against the Panthers while Tyrod Taylor is out with a punctured lung and cracked ribs.

No matter how the first-round pick performs, a third consecutive start is guaranteed after it was reported that Taylor is expected to miss next weekend’s matchup against the Buccaneers, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Taylor suffered cracked ribs in Los Angeles’ regular-season opener and then had a lung accidentally punctured by injection before last week’s game against the Chiefs when a team doctor attempted to aid the initial injury.

Herbert impressed in his professional debut against the defending Super Bowl champions, finishing with 22-of-32 passing for 311 yards and two touchdowns.

Coach Anthony Lynn said that Taylor will return to being the team’s starting quarterback, but the first-year player will have the opportunity to change his mind with his play.

Chargers need to continue to roll with QB Justin Herbert

Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn has a tough decision to make.

It only took one game for rookie Justin Herbert to prove that he’s worth being the Chargers’ starting quarterback moving forward on Sunday against the defending the Super Bowl champions.

Herbert started the game in place of Tyrod Taylor, who didn’t play due to chest pains. He completed 22 of his 33 pass attempts for 311 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. He added four more carries for 18 yards, which included a four-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.

However, despite Herbert’s solid outing, there’s still a chance that he could go back to standing on the sidelines after this week. Following the game, coach Anthony Lynn said Taylor will remain the starter if he’s healthy.

“I am going to wait and check on my starting quarterback and see how he is doing,” Lynn said. “He is our starter for a reason. If he’s 100 percent ready to go, he’s our starter. I know Justin can pick up the slack if he can’t [go].”

In a statement released Sunday night, the team said Taylor had been discharged from the hospital. “His status for next Sunday’s game will be determined later this week.”

While he had a couple of rookie mistakes in his debut, Herbert flashed his arm and athleticism, all while staying composed against arguably the toughest team in the NFL.

Even though the Chargers didn’t see this coming, and were hoping to let him sit and grow, Herbert proved he can play at this level right now.

It’s understanding why Lynn would want to go back to Taylor because of his ball security, but Los Angeles has a really good young quarterback. The team needs to continue to build on this performance, and benching him surely won’t build up his confidence.
