Q&A: Tyrese Haliburton on entering All-Star Weekend in an Indy car, the 3-point contest and more

“All of these people are here for All-Star Weekend, and I’m the Hoosier representative,” Tyrese Haliburton told For The Win.

Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton is one of the busiest individuals at the NBA’s 2024 All-Star Weekend.

Haliburton, who led Eastern Conference guards in All-Star votes from fans as well as media and players, earned an appearance as the starting point guard in the East for the All-Star Game.

The 23-year-old represents the Pacers, the hosts of NBA All-Star Weekend for the first time since 1985. He is just the fourth player in franchise history to ever make an appearance in the starting lineup of the All-Star Game. For the second year in a row, Haliburton will also participate in the Starry 3-point Contest.

Haliburton took some time to catch up with For The Win to discuss showing up to All-Star Weekend in an Indy car, the love he received from Larry Bird and Reggie Miller and more.

This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity.

Projected starters for the Pacers after a big trade united Pascal Siakam and Tyrese Haliburton

This was a huge move for the Pacers!

The Indiana Pacers made a swing for the fences and acquired two-time All-Star forward Pascal Siakam from the Toronto Raptors.

Although it is still unclear if Siakam will sign a contract extension with the Pacers or if he will test free agency this offseason, Indiana will instantly become one of the most interesting teams in the Eastern Conference once Tyrese Haliburton can return from his injury.

When this team is fully healthy, they have a fascinating starting lineup that could potentially make a run much like they did during the NBA’s In-Season Tournament.

Here is what they will likely have on the court when their ideal starting five is ready to play together:

Giannis Antetokounmpo can’t stop thinking about losing to the Pacers even when he’s ‘about to get freaky at night’

Giannis, PLEASE. Have some decorum, my guy.

Tyrese Haliburton and the Indiana Pacers live rent-free in Giannis Antetokounmpo’s mind.

It’s no secret that the Milwaukee Bucks and the Pacers have beef. Since the in-season Tournament, Tyrese Haliburton has been trolling Milwaukee, and things got really spicy with a game ball fiasco a short time later.

The Pacers own the series and have beaten the Bucks four times this season — yes, THIS SEASON. Adding more salt to the wound, Tyrese Haliburton is averaging 27 points when he plays against Giannis, Dame and crew. WOW.

On Wednesday, Giannis was asked how he feels about all those losses, and, well, he might have been a little too honest.

Tyrese Haliburton pointed and laughed at his defender after hitting an absurd 3-pointer

Haliburton knew his man couldn’t guard him.

The Indiana Pacers defeated the Milwaukee Bucks yet again thanks to another incredible performance by Tyrese Haliburton.

During the victory, Haliburton finished with 31 points and 12 assists without recording a turnover. Early in the game, while defended by Milwaukee’s Cam Payne, the guard hit a 3-pointer off the dribble.

After connecting on the difficult shot, while also drawing contact from his defender, Haliburton had an incredible reaction. He pointed and laughed as if to indicate to the crowd that Payne could not guard him.

While some might view this as disrespectful, Haliburton was right. There was absolutely nothing that Payne (or nearly any other player in the league) could have done.

Only three players in the league (Luka Doncic, Jalen Brunson, Trae Young) have scored more points per game on dribble jumpers so far this season, per Synergy.

Haliburton is also one of the leaders in 3-pointers made after seven or more dribbles, via NBA.com.

Takeaways: Alperen Sengun’s epic run continues, but Pacers bomb Rockets with 3s

Alperen Sengun posted back-to-back 30-point games for the first time, but Houston couldn’t overcome a 42-point difference on 3-pointers versus Indiana.

In the opener of a season-high seven-game homestand at Toyota Center, the Houston Rockets (15-13) couldn’t withstand a barrage of 3-pointers from Tyrese Haliburton and Indiana (15-14) in the Pacers’ 123-117 win (box score) on Tuesday night.

Led by 33 points and 10 assists from Haliburton, the Pacers hit 19-of-43 from 3-point range (44.2%), which easily topped a woeful 5-of-24 showing (20.8%) on a cold shooting night for the Rockets.

Rockets center Alperen Sengun finished with 30 points (55% FG), 16 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals, giving him back-to-back games with 30-plus points for the first time in his young NBA career. That wasn’t enough to offset a massive discrepancy in 3-pointer volume.

Jalen Green, also a third-year prospect, had his recent slump continue. He scored just 5 points on poor shooting while playing below 20 minutes (none in the fourth quarter) for the first time this season. Tari Eason (16 points, 8 rebounds, 53.8% FG) and Aaron Holiday (15 points, 3-of-6 on 3-pointers) picked up the slack with strong performances off the bench to keep Houston competitive.

Fred VanVleet led Houston had 18 points and 9 assists, but he shot 7-of-18 overall (38.9%) and 1-of-7 on 3-pointers (14.3%), which meshed perfectly with the theme of Tuesday’s game.

The loss came at an additional cost to the Rockets, who lost veteran defensive wing Dillon Brooks to a right abdominal oblique strain. His potential return timetable was not immediately clear.

Here’s our look at Tuesday’s highlights and postgame interviews, along with reaction by media members and fans. Next up is Phoenix (14-14) on Wednesday night, with a tip at 7 p.m. Central. Houston will be on the second night of a home back to back.

The internet is mercilessly roasting Tyrese Haliburton for his outrageously old-looking outfit

Nooooo Tyrese! Not you!

Tyrese Haliburton is one of the best point guards in the NBA, obviously. He’s been playing out of his mind this season and will almost certainly be an All-Star.

RELATED: Tyrese Haliburton might be the NBA’s new Chris Paul

He carried the Indiana Pacers to the NBA In-Season Tournament Finals against the Lakers on the back of his elite decision-making. When it comes to everything happening on the court, this dude is one of the best we’re watching today.

Off of the court, though, maybe not so much. At least according to the internet, anyway. They’re not feeling Haliburton’s fashion choices.

One of the point guard’s outfits hit the internet and, to be frank, my guy looks like he used to work at the steel mill in the early 1900s.

It’s crazy. It’s honestly not a bad outfit. It just looks…kind of old! Regardless, the internet mercilessly roasted him for this one. It was bad.

The Milwaukee Bucks posted a petty Giannis Antetokounmpo photo after Pacers game ball snafu

The Milwaukee Bucks social team chose chaos.

Somebody come look at this. The Milwaukee Bucks social team said they had time today.

In case you missed it, things are very awkward and heated between the Bucks and the Indiana Pacers. After facing each other in the In-Season Tournament, the two teams met again on Wednesday.

The Bucks won in style as Giannis Antetokounmpo scored a career-high 64 points. But, things went off the rails very quickly during a post-game scuffle when Giannis reportedly wanted the game ball.

It’s still unclear what happened (although we did our best to sum it up), yet that hasn’t stopped the chatter about the incident. Shortly after, Pacers rising star Tyrese Haliburton seemingly weighed in using The Cat in the Hat.

Now, the Bucks’ social team has spoken with a simple yet petty message.

Tyrese Haliburton seemingly responds to Giannis Antetokounmpo kerfuffle with ‘Cat in the Hat’ meme

Tyrese Haliburton has entered the chat.

The Indiana Pacers and Milwaukee Bucks debacle is probably not ending soon because Tyrese Haliburton may have fanned the flames.

On Wednesday, Giannis Antetokounmpo dropped a career-high 64 points against the Pacers. Giannis got the career milestone and the win, but NBA fans are buzzing over a post-game scuffle.

There are a lot of details to sort out (here’s everything we know), but the general premise is that Giannis was excited to take home the basketball used during the game, but the Pacers also wanted that ball for one of their players who hit a career milestone as well.

Tensions are still really high, and we can probably expect more details to unfold over the coming days. Still, until that happens, Tyrese Haliburton seemingly shared his thoughts about the situation on Twitter with a meme.

Everything we know about the Giannis Antetokounmpo game ball drama, the silliest sports saga of the year

This was all such a massive misunderstanding.

Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo scored a career-high 64 points during a victory over the Indiana Pacers, then chaos ensued.

According to league insider Chris Haynes, the Pacers “took the game ball away” after the performance from the two-time MVP. Antetokounmpo then “took off” toward the Pacers locker room to try to retrieve the ball back from the franchise he had just defeated.

But there is more to the story and plenty to unpack with this situation.

So we did our best to gather all the information and put that together in a way that will make some sense.

Based on the reporting we have gathered, here is everything we know:

Tyrese Haliburton: ‘LeBron was my favorite player growing up’

Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton talked about how he grew up a fan of LeBron James and said playing him for the NBA Cup will be “a storybook.”

By routing the New Orleans Pelicans on Thursday in the semifinal round of the NBA in-season tournament, the Los Angeles Lakers earned the right to face the Indiana Pacers for the first NBA Cup on Saturday.

LeBron James continues to make a mockery of Father Time by playing brilliant basketball as he nears his 39th birthday. On Thursday, he shot an incredible 9-of-12 from the field and 4-of-4 from 3-point range to score 30 points, to go along with eight assists in just 23 minutes. He scored 18 of those 30 points in the second quarter as L.A. took control and seemingly took the life out of New Orleans.

Facing Indiana means dealing with 23-year-old Tyrese Haliburton, who is becoming one of the game’s newest stars. He’s averaging 26.9 points and a league-high 12.1 assists a game this season, and he’s leading a Pacers offense that’s leading everyone with 128.4 points a game.

Haliburton said he grew up as a big fan of James and that he’s looking forward to competing against the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.

The Lakers have been playing well defensively, but they will have to really step up against a fast-breaking, fire-breathing Pacers team to win the in-season tournament.
