WATCH: ILB Tyrell Adams forces fumble against the Lions on Thanksgiving

Houston Texans inside linebacker Tyrell Adams produced a forced fumble against the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving in Week 12.

Inside linebacker Tyrell Adams has been a welcomed fill-in for Pro Bowler Benardrick McKinney, who is on injured reserve with a shoulder injury.

The 28-year-old made an impact play in the first quarter on Thanksgiving Day against the Detroit Lions in Week 12. With 4:32 to go in the opening period, Adams forced running back Jonathan Williams to fumble. Cornerback Bradley Roby recovered at the Lions’ 30-yard line.

Houston made good on the free possession with quarterback Deshaun Watson throwing a 2-yard touchdown pass to running back C.J. Prosise to give Houston a 13-7 lead late in the first quarter.

Texans ILB Tyrell Adams: Romeo Crennel believed in us

Houston Texans inside linebacker Tyrell Adams says that interim coach Romeo Crennel believed in the team as soon as he took over on Oct. 5.

The Houston Texans had a shakeup in their coaching staff when they fired Bill O’Brien on Oct. 5.

After an 0-4 start, the Texans promoted associated head coach Romeo Crennel to the interim role. It would have been easy for the 73-year-old to just get upfield to the end of the season, but inside linebacker Tyrell Adams says Crennel legitimately invested in the players.

“Considering the circumstances, he’s came straight in and believed in us,” Adams said. “That’s the biggest thing. He’s a positive guy, always been a positive guy since I’ve been around him. I just love his attitude, his belief in all the players, no matter who you are.”

One of Crennel’s biggest tasks when taking over for O’Brien was giving the team time to understand the changes to the systems on offense and defense. The glitch in comprehension needed time to work out.

“Well, I think the big difference is that they are understanding the system on defense and on offense, and how they fit in the system and what needs to be done to make the system work,” Crennel said. “As a result of it, we’ve gotten better. We are a competitive team. We always play hard and fight, but we haven’t been doing enough of the little things to put us over the hump.”

The Texans may have gotten over that hump with a 27-20 win over the New England Patriots Sunday at NRG Stadium. It was the first time all season Houston beat someone else other than the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“Now the focus is on this Thanksgiving Day game on a short week is to not rest on any laurels because we don’t have any,” said Crennel. “We need to get ready to play a game and win the next game.”

During the short week, Crennel will be doing what he has done since October in keeping the spirits of every player high throughout the locker room.

Said Adams: “He’s just positivity. He’s always trying to make a joke. Always trying to make us smile. Keep us uplifted. Keep us into the game. Keep us with everything that’s going on, despite the circumstances, he still keeps a positive attitude. We really appreciate him for that.”

If Crennel can get the Texans to beat the Lions, it will be their first winning streak of the season and the team’s first since Weeks 15-16 of 2019.

Tyrell Adams says Texans have to stop the Lions run first

Houston Texans inside linebacker Tyrell Adams says the defense has to first stop the Detroit Lions’ run game before they can defend QB Matt Stafford.

Houston Texans inside linebacker Tyrell Adams knows the defense still has to prioritize stopping the run as the gear up for the Detroit Lions Thursday at 11:30 a.m. CT at Ford Field.

The Lions’ run game average 95.4 yards per game, the fourth-fewest in the NFL, and also is tied for the eighth-lowest yards per carry at 4.0.

However, the run game is where the Texans’ defense has proven to be the most vulnerable in 2020 with 159.3 rushing yards per game surrendered, the most in the NFL. Houston has also struggled to stop rushing attacks per play with 5.1 yards per carry given up, also the most in the league.

Even though the Lions aren’t that formidable on the ground, Adams is emphasizing the Texans have to bottled up their run game to effectively pressure quarterback Matthew Stafford.

“Once you kind of shut down the run, you know they’re going to go to the pass,” Adams said. “I’ve got faith in the guys behind us, the back end, to kind of do their job how they did this past week. I think we’re up for the challenge and not to really worry about what’s going to happen.”

Stafford is tied with Patrick Mahomes and Drew Lock for the sixth-most yards per completion in the league at 11.9. However, he is susceptible to the pass rush with 27 sacks taken, tied with Matt Ryan for the fifth-most in the league.

“We’re just going to prepare this week and go out there and put our best foot forward,” said Adams.

The Texans are 3-7 on the year and looking for their first winning streak of the season. Detroit is 4-6 and still has a chance to sneak into the playoffs if things go their way starting on Thanksgiving.

‘No ego’ ILB Tyrell Adams trying to play fast and physical for Texans

Inside linebacker Tyrell Adams is replacing a Pro Bowler in Benardrick McKinney, and hopes to play fast and physical for the Houston Texans defense.

The Houston Texans had a conundrum at inside linebacker when they lost Benardrick McKinney to a shoulder injury after Week 4.

However, the former 2015 undrafted free agent from West Georgia has stepped up to the occasion and filled in for the two-time Pro Bowler.

“I think the biggest thing is keeping going what they’ve been doing around here,” Adams said. “They’ve kind of had a model of just being fast and physical. Despite the size difference or whatever it may be, I wanted to be that same kind of guy with those guys. Playing fast, playing instinctual, playing physical and just enjoying the game at the same time.”

Through two starts in place of McKinney, Adams has produced 20 combined tackles, two tackles for loss, 1.0 sack, a quarterback hit, two pass breakups, and a fumble recovery.

The most important aspect of Adams fitting into his starting role is developing chemistry with fellow inside linebacker Zach Cunnigham.

“I kind of have been around the guys for a minute so I kind of know how everybody maneuvers in that room,” said Adams. “It’s cool just working with Zach, just being around him and how he plays, how instinctual and how physical he plays sometimes. That kind of motivates me.”

Adams even shared that he tries to learn from his teammates at all levels, not just leaders on the team.

Said Adams: “For me, I have no ego in anything I do. When I’m with those guys, whether it be B-Mac, Zach, Dylan Cole, P.K. (Peter Kalambayi), I’m always trying to learn things from them. So, if I see them doing something well or doing something impressive, I want to replicate that. That’s kind of how I better my game. Being around those guys has allowed me to amplify my playing as well.”

The Texans could use amplified play from Adams, who seeks to effectively replace an impact player in the front seven.

Report: Texans expected to re-sign ILB Tyrell Adams

The Houston Texans are expected to re-sign inside linebacker Tyrell Adams once free agency begins on March 18.

The Houston Texans are taking care of their guys first.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, the Texans are expected to re-sign inside linebacker Tyrell Adams to a one-year contract when free agency begins on March 18.

Adams produced 13 tackles and a forced fumble in his five games for the Texans in 2019, two of which he started.

“He’s really one of those guys, in my opinion, that really exemplifies what pro football is all about,” coach Bill O’Brien said of Adams on Dec. 23, 2019. “It’s about the fabric guys and the role players doing their jobs at the highest level when you ask them to do that. That’s what Tyrell does.”

With Adams added to the roster, the Texans are counting on the 6-2, 230-pound West Georgia product to be a key part of their special teams and also provide inside linebacker depth behind Pro Bowler Benardrick McKinney and Zach Cunningham.

ILB Tyrell Adams is a ‘fabric guy’ for AFC South champion Texans

Houston Texans coach Bill O’Brien says backup inside linebacker Tyrell Adams “exemplifies what pro football is all about.”

There are household names, and then there are ones who are working to become one. Houston Texans linebacker Tyrell Adams fits in the latter category.

On Saturday, Adams took another step in his quest to fit in the former category.

Adams, 27, has played on more practice squads than a hand has fingers. In 2018, he signed with the Texans after his release from the Indianapolis Colts. He had a brief stint with the San Francisco 49ers before returning to Houston in 2019.

Filling in for starter Benardrick McKinney (concussion), Adams received his first start in a 23-20 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While playing his first defensive snaps of the season, he didn’t fail to make an impression.

“I thought he played very well,” Texans coach Bill O’Brien said on Monday. “I think Tyrell Adams, over the last two years especially, when we’ve asked him to step up his role — sometimes he’s been inactive and then other times we’ve asked him to come in and play on special teams.”

In the second quarter of the three-point win, Adams popped the ball out of running back Peyton Barber’s hands. It fell into the out-reaching arms of safety Justin Reid. That left an impression on O’Brien, just as his blocked punt in 2018.

“Last year he blocked a punt, this year he comes in, he plays well on special teams then last week he causes a fumble,” O’Brien said.

In the eyes of the head coach, Adams exemplifies what it means to be a professional football player. A selfless character, he does what the Texans ask of him no matter the question.

“The guy’s just, he’s really one of those guys, in my opinion, that really exemplifies what pro football is all about,” O’Brien said. “It’s about the fabric guys and the role players doing their jobs at the highest level when you ask them to do that. That’s what Tyrell does.”

Houston Texans safety Justin Reid is having a whale of a game.

After picking off Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston, the second-year safety from Stanford scooped up a Peyton Barber fumble forced by linebacker Tyrell Adams at the 42-yard line to give the Texans’ their fourth turnover of the game.

On the season, Reid entered the game with an interception, four pass breakups, and 72 tackles.
