Colts released LB Tyrell Adams from the practice squad

The Colts released LB Tyrell Adams from the practice squad Tuesday.

The Indianapolis Colts released linebacker Tyrell Adams from the practice squad, the team announced Tuesday.

Adams’ stay with the Colts was short-lived as he signed with the team last week for depth purposes. After the team signed defensive end Khalid Kareem from the Cincinnati Bengals practice squad, they released safety Trevor Denbow.

There’s a chance that Denbow winds up back on the practice squad if he clears waivers Wednesday, which would make sense why the Colts released Adams without an immediate corresponding move.

Colts sign LB Tyrell Adams to practice squad

The Colts signed LB Tyrell Adams to the practice squad.

The Indianapolis Colts signed linebacker Tyrell Adams to the practice squad and released tight end Darrell Daniels from the practice squad, the team announced Tuesday.

With Shaquille Leonard on the injured reserve list, the Colts are likely looking to add a bit more depth to the position. Adams, 30, has spent time with several teams throughout his career and even had a brief stop with the Colts in 2018.

Daniels was signed to the practice squad last week amid the injuries to the tight end room.

Jaguars cut linebacker Tyrell Adams in effort to get under 53-man roster limit

Tyrell Adams was the latest victim of the #Jaguars’ effort to get under the 53-man roster limit this week.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have cut linebacker Tyrell Adams after a disappointing preseason left them with more depth than they could carry onto their 53-man roster. Adams, now in his eighth season in the NFL, was buried on the team’s depth chart as the third-string backup behind Devin Lloyd and Shaquille Quarterman.

Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network reported Adams’ release.

He managed just four tackles in the Jaguars first three preseason games before going off for seven in their effort against the Atlanta Falcons this weekend. Perhaps his stand-out performance at Mercedes Benz Stadium will be enough to land him another job elsewhere, but it became clear when Jacksonville cut him loose that he would not have an opportunity to show what he could do in Duval County in the regular season.

Adams entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2015 and has played for no less than eight teams over the course of his eight seasons in the league. His longest stint was with the Texans from 2018 to 2020, where he enjoyed moderate success on Houston’s defense as a sporadic contributor.

Now faced with starting from scratch, Adams will look to catch on as a practice squad candidate with a team in need of a veteran linebacker to shore up their defensive depth. His options are likely to be very few as he enters his age 30 season, but with the league’s new expanded practice squad rosters, Adams could potentially carve himself out a meaningful role as a journeyman mentor to younger players.

This move is likely an indication that the Jaguars will roster Shaquille Quarterman this season, though Adams’ fellow third-string backup Chappelle Russell may also be facing the waiver wire or outright release in the near future.

Jacksonville’s deepest part on their roster is the linebacker corps, so moves like this are to be expected as they look to give opportunities to potential regular season contributors at other key positions.

Jaguars give LB Tyrell Adams an extension

The Jags have extended LB Tyrell Adams, who was a late-season addition for the 2021 season.

While the Jacksonville Jaguars can’t start the process of speaking with free agents from other teams yet, they can work on retaining their pending free agents. They’ve been doing exactly that as fans saw with the return of Tyler Shatley, but instead, they made a move on defense this week by extending linebacker Tyrell Adams.

Adams, 29, joined the Jags late last season on Dec. 29 before their Week 16 game against New England. He joined the team from the San Francisco 49ers’ practice squad and played in the Jags’ last two games. In the process, he registered a forced fumble.

Throughout his career, Adams participated in 44 games while also starting in 14. He entered the league as a rookie free agent with the Seattle Seahawks in 2015 but has spent time with various teams, including the Buffalo Bills, Indianapolis Colts, and Houston Texans, to name a few.

Signing with the Jags will keep the Atlanta, Ga. native close to home, and he will enter this season with 163 combined tackles, two sacks, and four forced fumbles.

Bills sign former Texans ILB Tyrell Adams

The Buffalo Bills have signed former Houston Texans inside linebacker Tyrell Adams.

After spending the last three seasons with the Houston Texans, inside linebacker Tyrell Adams has found a new team.

According to Nick Wojton of the Bills Wire, Buffalo has signed the 28-year-old from West Georgia.

For Adams, it isn’t the first time he will go to Buffalo as he was a member of their 53-man roster during the 2017 season. However, he was waived immediately as he failed his physical.

In Houston, Adams was able to finally launch his career after spending much of the beginning bouncing on and off practice squads and offseason rosters as an undrafted free agent in 2015.

“I definitely felt like I was always capable of playing,” Adams said of his 2020 campaign on Jan. 4. “I think the biggest thing also was just proving to myself I could play. Sometimes kind of defeating those mental thoughts of not being able to because of lack of opportunities or whatever it may have been. I kind of always believed in myself and told myself you can do it when you get the chance.

“I’m thankful for the chance that I got but there’s a lot of things I kind of feel like I left out of there that I can work on and mold and craft to be better in the following years.”

Adams provided the Texans defense with 125 combined tackles, 2.0 sacks, five tackles for loss, four pass breakups, two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery in 16 games, 12 of which he started in place of an injured Benardrick McKinney.

Report: Buffalo Bills sign LB Tyrell Adams

LB Tyrell Adams signs with Buffalo Bills.

The Buffalo Bills’ recent dip into the depth signing continues on Wednesday. According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, the Bills are signing former Texans linebacker Tyrell Adams.

Along with Adams, the Bills signed a depth piece on the offensive line this week in former Bengals tackle Bobby Hart. Ex-Dolphins running back Matt Breida was added, too.

On Tuesday via the NFL’s transaction wire it was announced that Adams was taking a free-agent visit with the Bills. The 28-year-old was actually already familiar with Buffalo.

In 2017, he was claimed off waivers by the Bills but failed his physical. The former undrafted rookie from the 2015 NFL Draft has bounced around the league several times in his career via practice squads and training camps.

Starting out with the Seahawks, Adams also went to the Chiefs, Raiders, Colts, Texans and 49ers while also having two stints with three of those teams.

In 2020, he did find some consistency with the Texans finally. He played in 16 games, starting 12, and recorded 125 tackles, two sacks, two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery.

With the Bills, he’d likely have a chance to backup linebackers Tremaine Edmunds and Matt Milano… but he also has experience playing special teams as well.

The Bills later announced that Adams signed a one-year deal.

ILB Tyrell Adams believes he can play in Texans’ new 4-3 scheme

Houston Texans inside linebacker Tyrell Adams believes he can transition from inside linebacker in the 3-4 to one of the three LB spots in the 4-3.

Tyrell Adams has always bet on himself.

The 28-year-old from West Georgia was a member of seven NFL teams, mostly as a practice squad or offseason player, from 2015 to 2018 when he finally settled down with the Houston Texans.

In 2020, with Pro Bowl inside linebacker Benardrick McKinney out for the season after the first four games, Adams took over the second inside linebacker spot in the 3-4 defense and provided Houston with 125 combined tackles, five tackles for loss, four pass breakups, 2.0 sacks, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries.

Just he has throughout his career, Adams is betting on himself to adjust to new defensive coordinator Lovie Smith’s Tampa-2, which deploys a 4-3 front.

“I think I’m really versatile,” Adams told Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle. “I play smarter and quicker than most guys, and I’m good in zone and man coverage. Coming downhill and playing really physical, adding that to my repertoire, I’m an all-around linebacker. I’m pretty well-versed in all aspects of being a complete linebacker. I can run and get to the ball.”

Adams predominantly has played in a 4-3 defense when looking at his other stops. The 2015 Seattle Seahawks were a 4-3 front, as were the 2015 Kansas City Chiefs. The Oakland Raiders under Jack Del Rio were a 4-3 in 2016 before switching to a 3-4 in 2017The Buffalo Bills in 2017, the Indianapolis Colts in 2018, and the San Francisco 49ers in 2018 deployed 4-3 fronts.

“Playing in a 4-3 gives me the ability to move and really excel physically,” Adams said.

Adams made $910,000 on a one-year contract with the Texans in 2020. As a free agent, the Texans will evaluate what the 6-2, 228-pound linebacker can bring to the new defense. The Texans already have a tackling machine on the roster in inside linebacker Zach Cunningham, and McKinney is still under contract with the Texans through the 2023 season.

Texans ILB Tyrell Adams is thriving in starting role

Houston Texans defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver says ILB Tyrell Adams is doing a great job stepping up in Benardrick McKinney’s absence.

The Houston Texans faced a dilemma when inside linebacker Benardrick McKinney was lost for the season with a shoulder injury.

The Pro Bowler’s last game was Week 4 versus the Minnesota Vikings, and the defense would be losing one of its leaders as he placed on injured reserve.

However, reserve inside linebacker Tyrell Adams has stepped up and provided the Texans’ defense with the necessary communication and playmaking to keep the operation running smoothly.

“I’m so incredibly proud of Tyrell,” defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver said. “Since B-Mac has gone down and he’s stepped into that role, he’s done everything we’ve asked him to do.”

Playing alongside inside linebacker Zach Cunningham, Adams has taken on a communication role, getting players in the right positions and relaying calls from the sideline.

“We’ve asked him to be the primary communicator out there, be loud, be vocal, be confident and communicate everything to both the front of the defense, the front seven and the back end,” said Weaver. “He’s done that and he’s also been incredibly productive in doing so.”

Adams has collected 79 combined tackles, 1.0 sack, three tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and three pass breakups in his 11 games, seven of which he has started.

The results aren’t surprising to Weaver.

Said Weaver: “I’d like to say I was shocked and surprised but for all the people that have been around here and seen the way he’s worked the past few years that he’s been here, it’s really not surprising. We expected him to come in here and there to be no drop off. I’m just incredibly proud of him that he’s been able to have these moments.”

Adams could have a couple more moments to make Weaver proud as the Texans face the Indianapolis Colts Sunday at 12:00 p.m. CT at NRG Stadium.
