2023 Penn State football snapshot profile: No. 14 Tyrece Mills

Where does safety Tyrece Mills fit in the defensive outlook for Penn State in 2023? Snapshot profile.

Going into the 2023 football season, Nittany Lions Wire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Penn State roster. Over the preseason, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for James Franklin this season.

Next up in this year’s series is a look at one of the more recent additions to the program from the Lackawanna Community College pipeline, safety [autotag]Tyrece Mills[/autotag]. Mills may not be in a position to have quite as much of an impact on the defense as some of his former Lackawanna CC peers, but his addition to the roster last year gives Penn State some depth at the safety position going into the 2023 season.

Penn State spring football: Linebacker preview

Penn State’s linebacker depth in 2023 could be the best it’s been in years.

There is potential that this will be one of the most exciting linebacker groups that Penn State has had in a while.

The group is headlined by true sophomore [autotag]Abdul Carter[/autotag] who really opened eyes last season. Coming in wearing the coveted number 11 jersey as a true freshman meant the spotlight would be on him all year. He more than delivered and has a promising collegiate career in front of him.

Another interesting nugget is there are no seniors in the linebacking corps for 2023-24. The most experienced players are two redshirt juniors. This is a good sign for the future as this group will be able to continue playing with each other for multiple years going forward.

There will be depth chart battles this spring to keep an eye on. The main one to watch is between [autotag]Kobe King[/autotag] and [autotag]Tyler Elsdon[/autotag] for the starting middle linebacker position. Elsdon won the battle last spring and summer, but the snap counts last season were pretty similar.

Abdul Carter

Matthew OHaren-USA TODAY Sports

Measurables: 6’3″ / 233 lbs.

Year: Sophomore

Expected Role: Starting Weakside Linebacker

There is a real buzz around Abdul Carter about what he can do this season. Coming into Penn State, Carter was a four-star recruit in the 2022 class. He was excellent in his freshman season recording 56 total tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks. His PFF grade was 76.2 ranking him 122nd out of 789 linebackers last season.

With another offseason in the college weight room and more time to get familiar with the defensive scheme, the sky is the limit for Carter. He could be the highlight of what’s expected to be a very good defense.

NEXT: Kobe King a rising redshirt sophomore

Previewing the Penn State linebackers in 2023

Let’s take an early look at what Penn State has going for it at the linebacker position in 2023.

Penn State and linebackers are two things that go hand in hand. Penn State has produced All-Americans, College Hall of Famers, and NFL Hall of Famers and the players on the 2023 roster have a chance at any of those accomplishments.

Players such as [autotag]Abdul Carter[/autotag] a prominent big-name linebacker for the team as we advance after a breakout freshman campaign but there is more to know. Between veterans of the team and incoming transfers and recruiting classes, teams constantly change any more.

Getting to know the playmakers on your Nittany Lions defense doesn’t have to be mandatory but it should be encouraged. We have taken care of that as the transfer window has closed for now and we head toward another national signing day for the team.

Penn State snapshot profile: No. 14 Tyrece Mills

Snapshot profile of safety Tyrece Mills. How he fits into the picture for Penn State in 2022.

Going into the 2022 football season, Nittany Lions Wire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Penn State roster.

Over the preseason, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for [autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] this season.

The next player is Penn State safety Tyrece Mills.

Mills is another JUCO product of Lackawanna Community College, a school that James Franklin has become familiar with, after bringing in Jaquan Brisker, who went on to be a second-round draft pick to the Chicago Bears in the 2022 draft, and safety Ji’Ayir Brown.

Penn State’s big recruiting weekend includes visit from USC commit

USC and Utah commits among those visiting Penn State after first week of spring football practices

Penn State is wrapping up its first week of spring football practices with a big recruiting weekend. Penn State is hosting a number of recruits this weekend, opening the doors to spring football practices to current commits and targets in the next three recruiting cycles.

Lions247 has a full list of players scheduled to make a visit to Penn State this weekend. Among the players visiting includes a number of Class of 2022 commits who have not been able to enroll early, including Cornell transfer offensive lineman [autotag]Hunter Nourzad[/autotag] and Lackawanna College JUCO transfer [autotag]Tyrece Mills[/autotag]. [autotag]Drew Shelton[/autotag], another prize in the recruiting class for 2022 is also set to be in town.

Some members of the Class of 2023 are also checking out the scene this weekend with [autotag]Alex Birchmeier[/autotag] and [autotag]Anthony Donkoh[/autotag] scheduled to be making a visit. Penn State will also be hosting a number of targets in the Class of 2023, 2024, and 2025.

Among the recruits visiting Penn State in the Class of 2025 is currently committed to USC. Defensive back Arron White has been a hard commit to the Trojans since last September, before the coaching change with the program, so it remains to be seen just how serious a candidate Penn State will ultimately be for White, who is an Orange, California native. Regardless, having White on campus is still noticeable for a player not scheduled to join the college ranks for another three years.

White isn’t the only Pac-12 commit in town either. Wide receiver Kobe Boykin, another product out of Orange, California, is currently committed to Utah’s Class of 2024. Could Penn State manage to flip a couple of Pac-12 commits? Time will tell, but Penn State will hope to leave a solid impression on these and other recruits this weekend.

Tyrece Mills keeps Lackawanna pipeline pumping at Penn State

Penn State Class of 2022: The Lackawanna pipeline continues with safety Tyrece Mills

Overview:

You might recognize Lackawanna Community College because current Penn State safety Ji’Ayir Brown is among a handful of players who have also transferred to Penn State from the JUCO program. And by the end of the full recruiting cycle for the Class of 2022, safety Tyrece Mills will be added to the list. Mills did not sign with Penn State during the early signing period but said he will be signing in February during the traditional signing period.

Mills was recruited as the top JUCO safety in the country. Brown was also recruited as one of the top JUCO safeties in the country. Speaking of Brown, it’s worth noting that he did announce his return to Happy Valley in 2022 to give a boost to the defense and the secondary.

Penn State was the only offer Mills had during his recruiting process coming out of Junior College.

He played in just one game last season, and he does have some coaching ties to the Nittany Lions. One of Mills’ coaches, Deion Barnes, is a current graduate assistant at Penn State. Mills is also just a few hours away from where he grew up.

Mills is a guy that can make plays from all over the field. When it comes to the secondary, one major component you see in a lot of the players is how physical they play. That is the type of player you are getting out of Mills.

Brown staying another year at Penn State is huge. With two draft-eligible secondary players leaving in Jaquan Brisker and Tariq Castro-Fields, Penn State has some talented players coming in, and Mills is one of them.

What Penn State commit is not signing in the early signing period?

JUCO transfer Tyrece Mills will reportedly join Penn State’s Class of 2022 after the early signing period

Wednesday was a fantastic day for the Penn State football program with the official signing of the bulk of its impressive Class of 2022. But there was one somewhat notable omission from Penn State’s confirmed list of signees on Wednesday.

Tyrece Mills, a JUCO transfer from Lackawanna College, was not listed among Penn State’s confirmed signed players on Wednesday. According to a report from Lions 247, there is no need to push any panic buttons just yet, as it seems Mills is working through a couple of hangups with his transfer process from Lackawanna College and Penn State. Mills confirmed to Lions 247 he will not be signing with Penn State in December.

But fear not, because Mills still has every intention of signing with Penn State in the Class of 2022. It will just be at a later time, during the traditional signing period.

I will be signing the next Signing Day in February,” Mills said to Lions 247.

So there you have it. While Mills may miss out on being a part of the fun in the early signing period, the long-term view still appears to be on track for him and for Penn State. While he would be missing out on spring practices, his experience as a JUCO player should allow for him to have a relatively smooth transition when he does arrive at Penn State later on.

Big board: Penn State’s 2022 football recruiting class by position

Breaking down Penn State football’s Class of 2022 position by position.

Penn State’s Class of 2022 has long been recognized as one of the top classes in the nation. The latest (and greatest) recruiting class to be signed by James Franklin looks to add some tremendous quality and depth to various positions across the roster and has some players to really look forward to watching grow almost immediately.

For a long stretch in this recruiting cycle, Penn State had the nation’s top-ranked class, and it continued to be ranked highest among Big Ten schools up until shortly before the early signing period. But there is no disputing the ranking of Penn State’s Class of 2022 is proof Penn State has been hitting it hard on the recruiting trail this cycle.

Here is a breakdown of Penn State’s Class of 2022 broken down by position.

Penn State’s Class of 2022 is now ranked No. 2

Penn State’s latest recruiting efforts continue to pay off in a big way in the recruiting rankings for 2022

After a brilliant week of recruiting news, Penn State’s Class of 2022 continues to move up in the national rankings. And it didn’t have that far it could have moved. After coming out of the July 4th weekend with the nation’s No. 3 recruiting class according to the 247 Sports composite ranking, the Nittany Lions have moved up one spot.

According to the updated composite rankings from 247 Sports, Penn State has moved up to No. 2 in the nation, passing Notre Dame. The Irish fell one spot to occupy the ranking recently held by the Nittany Lions. Ohio State remains the nation’s recruiting leader with the highest-rated class featuring four five-star recruits in the Class of 2022.

Penn State’s recruiting ranking was given a healthy boost over the July 4th weekend with the additions of four-star defenders Tyreese Fearbry and Zane Durant. The weekend also saw the additions of linebacker Keon Wylie and defensive lineman Kaleb Artis. Penn State also added a JUCO commitment from JB Nelson. The big splash continued on Tuesday when four-star running back Nicholas Singleton from Reading, PA announced his commitment to the Nittany Lions.

Penn State’s Class of 2022 already included a number of four-star recruits as well including wide receivers Kaden Saunders, Mekhi Flowers, and Anthony Ivey, offensive tackle Drew Shelton, quarterback Drew Allar and defensive end Ken Talley, just to name a few.

As of the morning of July 9, here is a look at the top 10 in the recruiting rankings from 247 Sports;

  1. Ohio State
  2. Penn State
  3. Notre Dame
  4. LSU
  5. Oklahoma
  6. Florida State
  7. Georgia
  8. Texas
  9. Oregon
  10. Michigan

Asking Penn State to climb to No. 1 is unrealistic at this point, barring a completely unexpected collapse from Ohio State, but the Nittany Lions are easily on track to record the highest-rated recruiting class under head coach James Franklin yet. Keeping everyone in the class still requires work too between now and the early signing period in December. And it’s possible another school may eclipse Penn State at some point. But the Nittany Lions are in a terrific spot in the middle of the summer.
