Giants sign RB Dante Miller to active roster, elevate two

The New York Giants have signed running back Dante Miller to their active roster and elevated two from their practice squad.

The New York Giants have officially placed defensive tackle Armon Watts (knee) on injured reserve (IR). And with a spot open, running back Dante Miller has been signed from the practice squad to the active roster.

The Giants signed Miller in April after eligibility issues cost him a final season at South Carolina. He was also ruled ineligible for the 2024 NFL draft, which made him a pre-draft rookie free agent.

“There was a national scout for the Giants named Mike Derice who knew about me from my time at Columbia,” Miller said after being signed. “The Giants were interested in me and he asked about my eligibility situation at South Carolina.

“After I put up my numbers at my pro day, I was invited to a private workout. I worked out in front of the coaching staff and the front office staff. It took me about a day to realize New York is a great place to be. It’s a great organization to play for and I hope I bring a lot to the team.”

The Giants liked what they saw from “Lil Turbo” and he’s remained on their practice squad throughout the season, being elevated twice — both in Week 5 and Week 6.

However, Miller’s role was limited. He took just a single offensive snap and seven special teams snaps, recording one tackle in those games.

It’s unclear what role he will fill in Week 18.

Meanwhile, the Giants also elevated linebacker Boogie Basham and offensive tackle Tyre Phillips ahead of the Philadelphia Eagles game.

For both Basham and Phillips, it is their third standard elevation.

Giants place Bobby Okereke, Patrick Johnson on injured reserve

The New York Giants have placed linebacker Bobby Okereke and Patrick Johnson on season-ending injured reserve (IR).

The New York Giants have placed linebacker Bobby Okereke (back) and Patrick Johnson (knee) on season-ending injured reserve.

Okereke, who played every snap in 2023, last suited up against the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving Day. He hadn’t missed a game since 2020.

The defensive captain closes out his second season with the Giants having recorded 93 tackles (47 solo, six for a loss), three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, three passes defensed, two QB hits, and 2.0 sacks.

Johnson suffered a knee injury during a Week 15 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

In a corresponding roster move, the Giants signed safety Raheem Layne from their practice squad to the active roster. They have one spot still open.

Finally, linebacker Boogie Basham and offensive lineman Tyre Phillips were elevated from the reserve unit. For Basham, it’s his first standard elevation of the year. He has two remaining.

Phillips was previously elevated ahead of a Week 14 game against the New Orleans Saints. He has only a single elevation remaining this season.

Giants place D.J. Davidson on IR in flurry of roster moves

The New York Giants made a flurry of roster moves on Saturday, including to placement of DL D.J. Davidson on injured reserve (IR).

The New York Giants made a flurry of roster moves on Saturday afternoon before a Week 14 game against the New Orleans Saints at MetLife Stadium.

Defensive tackle D.J. Davidson (shoulder) being placed on injured reserve (IR) was the most notable. He had been listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game.

In 12 games this season, Davidson has recorded 23 tackles (12 solo, one for a loss), two fumble recoveries, two QB hits, and 2.0 sacks.

The Giants also waived quarterback Tim Boyle, leaving them with just Drew Lock and Tommy DeVito this week. He is likely to sign back to their practice squad.

In corresponding roster moves, New York signed defensive linemen Elijah Garcia and Casey Rogers from their practice squad to the active roster.

Finally, the team elevated offensive lineman Tyre Phillips and cornerback Greg Stroman from the reserve unit. It’s the first elevation for Phillips and the third for Stroman, who has none remaining.

If the Giants want to use Stroman again, he’ll have to be signed to the 53-man roster.

Giants sign OL Tyre Phillips, QB Tim Boyle to practice squad

The New York Giants have signed OL Tyre Phillips and QB Tim Boyle to their practice squad, and released three others.

On Tuesday, the New York Giants added offensive lineman Tyre Phillips and quarterback Tim Boyle to their practice squad.

Phillips, 27, was the Baltimore Ravens’ third-round pick out of Mississippi State in 2020. He played in 22 games over two seasons in Baltimore, starting 13.

Phillips played 22 games for the Giants (starting 14) from 2022-23 with a stop on the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice squad sprinkled in the middle. He suffered a quad injury in Week 17 last season and was not re-signed by the Giants this offseason.

Boyle, 30, is a well-traveled backup quarterback by trade who has played for Green Bay, Detroit, Chicago, the Jets, Houston, and Miami. He has five NFL starts to his credit.

Boyle is likely here to fill out the quarterback room and serve as the emergency quarterback as it has become obvious the Giants do not want to put Daniel Jones back out on the field under any circumstances.

Jones has a $23 million injury guarantee in his contract. The Giants will almost certainly cut him loose after this season.

In corresponding roster moves, the Giants have released linebacker Curtis Bolton, offensive lineman Garret Greenfield, and fullback Jakob Johnson from their practice squad.

Should the Browns be the team to take a flyer on Tyre Phillips?

After a Week 17 quad injury, the offensive tackle with starting experience is ready to roll. Should the Browns be interested?

The Cleveland Browns continue to wait out the injuries suffered by their current left tackles, leaving them uncertain that any of them will certainly be ready for Week 1. However, general manager Andrew Berry always is open to improving the roster if able to. There are still players available with the potential to make an impact on a team in the 2024 season. One of those players is former New York Giants offensive tackle Tyre Phillips.

The former 2020 third round pick has done his fair share of traveling since joining the NFL, having three different teams in four seasons. Throughout his career thus far, he has managed to start 27 games, having some much-needed experience blocking some of the NFL’s best defenders. He also managed to only give up two sacks and only committed three penalties in the 552 offensive snaps he played last season. Not many players currently have the experienced resume that Phillips could provide.

Suffering a season-ending quad injury in Week 17 a year ago, Phillips is now ready to roll:

If the Browns continue to approach Week 1 uncertain about the health of their left tackles, Phillips could be a quality signing for this team. This signing would allow Browns starting left tackle Jedrick Wills to approach the season carefully and allow him time to return fully healthy when ready. We will continue to monitor the offensive tackle situation as well as Phillips’ active status in free agency.

Giants’ Tyre Phillips is ‘ahead of schedule’ in his recovery

New York Giants guard Tyre Phillips is recovering faster than expected from his quad injury.

Tyre Phillips has had a rough go to start his NFL career.

Selected in the third round of the 2020 NFL draft by the Baltimore Ravens, Phillips never got to really show what he is capable of. He dealt with an ankle injury during his first season, then tore his ACL in his second season and was released before his third season started.

In September 2022, the New York Giants signed Phillips. He was released in August 2023, and Phillips joined the Philadelphia Eagles practice squad that same month. In October, though, the Giants came calling again. Phillips was back in blue, suiting up for the injured Evan Neal.

Phillips would start the next nine of 10 games, injuring his quadriceps muscle in Week 17. He underwent surgery in January, and now it looks as if his recovery is going better than expected.

That Phillips’ recovery is going well is great for him. He’s an unrestricted free agent this year, though, so the Giants need to decide if they will re-sign him or not.

The Giants had the worst offensive line in the NFL in 2023, so it seems like keeping a solid guard on the roster is a good idea.

But this is the Giants and who knows what the likes of Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll are thinking. The guard position is one they are actively looking to bolster, so time will tell if Phillips makes the cut.

Giants’ Evan Neal, Tyre Phillips had successful surgeries on Tuesday

New York Giants offensive linemen, Evan Neal and Tyre Phillips, each underwent successful reparative surgeries on Tuesday.

Two New York Giants offensive linemen underwent surgery this week to repair season-ending injuries — one in North Carolina and one in New York.

From SNY:

Neal had a procedure after sustaining a small fracture in his ankle on Tuesday by Dr. Robert Anderson in Charlotte, North Carolina. Neal originally sustained the ankle in early November at Las Vegas and was unable to return to action, limiting the former first-round draft pick to just seven games in his second NFL season.

Phillips, who tore his quadriceps in Big Blue’s Week 17 loss to the Los Angeles Rams last Sunday, underwent an operation on Tuesday in New York City with Dr. Scott Rodeo.

The Giants claim they aren’t worried about Neal, who many are ready to label a “bust,” but it’s difficult to believe they aren’t seeking alternatives at right tackle. There has been talk about moving Neal to guard next year.

Phillips was one of the players the Giants brought in to spell Neal after this injury. He has been a decent swing tackle and they could consider bringing him back next year.

Giants’ Tyre Phillips suffered torn quad

New York Giants offensive lineman Tyre Phillips suffered a torn quad tendon in Week 17 and is headed for surgery.

Editor’s note: Brian Daboll revealed on Monday that Tyre Phillips suffered a torn quad tendon and will undergo surgery.

New York Giants quarterback Tyrod Taylor frantically called trainers out onto the field before taking a knee next to his teammate, offensive lineman Tyre Phillips.

Taylor’s reaction told the whole story. Even before cameras shifted to Phillips writhing in pain, it was abundantly clear something bad had happened.

As more Giants, many pale in the face, kneeled next to their fallen teammate, the severity of the situation began to set in. Then out came the cart, which scooped up and whisked an emotional Phillips away.

The usually tight-lipped Brian Daboll acknowledged after the game that Phillips was in a bad way.

“I don’t think it’s good. He was hurting pretty good,” Daboll told reporters. “I mean, but it’s a knee. I know that. He was in a lot of pain out there, but I haven’t talked to the doctors.”

Phillips had injured his knee earlier in the game, having it wrapped and put in a brace before returning. But the second time he went down, it looked like something else — something far more serious.

NFL Insider Jordan Schultz reports that the Giants fear Phillips suffered a torn quad that will require surgery.

“We working so hard for some injuries to happen but we play a sport that has injuries. Just got to trust God. Got to trust him through it all,” told The Athletic after the game.

Phillips will head for an MRI on Monday, likely at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan, to confirm. Swift surgery is likely.

Phillips appeared in nine games this season with eight starts at right tackle, replacing second-year offensive lineman Evan Neal, who was lost for the season with a broken ankle. He, too, will need surgery.

Giants can’t overcome self-inflicted wounds, fall to Rams, 26-25

The New York Giants couldn’t get out of their own way in Week 17, handing the Los Angeles Rams a 26-25 victory.

The New York Giants (5-10) played host to the Los Angeles Rams (8-7) at MetLife Stadium on Sunday afternoon in a clash between two of the NFC’s most storied franchises.

The Rams entered the game winners of five of their last six while the Giants came in losers of their last two games.

The Giants were eliminated from playoff contention in Week 16 while the Rams came in as the NFC’s sixth seed.

No one knew what to expect but what they got was one of the most entertaining football games of the year — even if it was rather ugly and ended poorly for the Giants.

Giants’ Brian Daboll doesn’t commit to starting Evan Neal once healthy

New York Giants coach Brian Daboll won’t commit to starting Evan Neal when he’s healthy, leaving the door open for Tyre Phillips to start.

New York Giants right tackle Evan Neal has had a rough season. He’s appeared in just seven games and is doubtful again this week, nursing an ankle injury.

Even when he was on the field this season, Neal hasn’t played well — certainly not what was expected from him after last season.

Most would assume that when he’s healthy, Neal will return to the starting lineup. However, head coach Brian Daboll wouldn’t commit to it when asked about that on Friday.

“I’d just say he’s working to get better. We’ll see. Cross that bridge when we get to it,” Daboll told reporters.

The next question was about Tyre Phillips’ play as he’s been covering for Neal. Daboll seemed far more enthused when talking about Neal’s replacement.

“He’s done a nice job,” the coach said.

This appears to leave the door open for Phillips to remain the starter even after Neal is cleared to play.

Neal has two options when he’s healthy: Either put in the work to improve and earn that starting spot back or be ready to back up Phillips when the time comes.
