Jets injury report: Marcus Maye tears Achilles, Tyler Kroft has lacerated lung

S Marcus Maye and TE Tyler Kroft suffered significant injuries against the Colts. Maye’s season — and possibly his Jets career — is over.

The Jets’ worst fears for Marcus Maye were confirmed on Friday.

Robert Saleh said the safety suffered a season-ending Achilles tear in New York’s loss to the Colts. Maye went down without contact late in the Week 9 game.

“He is made of grit,” Saleh said of Maye, offering some encouragement with a long recovery ahead. “His ride’s not over. His story’s not over.”

The injury could effectively end Maye’s career with the Jets, however. The 28-year-old is playing on the franchise tag this season after he and the team couldn’t agree on an extension over the offseason. It was unlikely the two sides were going to reach a long-term deal this coming offseason.

Maye is also facing potential league discipline for a DUI arrest in February, making it unclear when he will see the field again, regardless of what team he’s with.

Maye’s 2021 season ended with 46 tackles, four TFL, two pass deflections and one sack in six games. He missed two games with an ankle injury.

Maye was not the only Jet who suffered a significant injury against the Colts. Saleh said Tyler Kroft is going on injured reserve with what the coach nondescriptly called a chest injury, but NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said the tight end has a lacerated lung. He will miss a few weeks.

The good news for the Jets is that QB Mike White “looks good for next week” after injuring his forearm against Indianapolis, though he is day-to-day. QB Zach Wilson, WR Corey Davis and RB Tevin Coleman are all expected to return to practice before the Jets play the Bills in Week 10.

Saleh has said he will take New York’s quarterback situation day by day.

Jets injury report: Marcus Maye suffers Achilles injury in loss to Colts

Marcus Maye suffered an Achilles injury in the Jets’ 45-30 loss to the Colts on Thursday Night Football.

There is a chance that the Jets will be without the anchor of their secondary for the foreseeable future.

Marcus Maye suffered a potentially serious Achilles injury in New York’s loss to the Colts, according to Robert Saleh. Maye departed with a non-contact injury in the second half and did not return.

“I’m sick for him,” Saleh said postgame. “It’s not looking good.”

Maye recently returned from a sprained ankle that kept him out of action for two games. The 28-year-old has 46 tackles, four tackles for loss, two pass deflections, one sack and one quarterback hit in six games this season.

“You look at that secondary, he’s the vet,” Saleh said. “You got a lot of second-year and rookie players and second-year and first-year players in that back end and Marcus was kind of that settling force back there and obviously a heck of a football player.

“I’m more concerned for Marcus than what we’ll do defensively to fill that void because he’s a fantastic young man. He’s done everything we asked him to do.”

The Jets also lost Mike White to injury in their 45-30 loss to the Colts. White suffered a right forearm injury on New York’s second drive of the game and exited after throwing a 19-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Moore. White was seen on the sideline trying to get his forearm loose and occasionally throwing, but never returned to the game and gave way to Josh Johnson, who finished with 317 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.

“He couldn’t grip the ball,” Saleh said of White. “I think his feeling came back later in the game. Obviously, in the fourth quarter, by then it was too late, so he’ll be evaluated.”

Tyler Kroft suffered a chest injury against Indianapolis after catching a pass. The veteran tight end finished with two receptions for 38 yards.

Jets vs. Patriots inactives: Tevin Coleman, C.J. Mosley out for New York

Tevin Coleman, C.J. Mosley and Tyler Kroft won’t play for the Jets in their rematch with the Patriots.

The Jets will be without three key pieces against the Patriots in Week 7, as Tevin Coleman, Tyler Kroft are inactive for New York’s trip to New England.

Coleman injured his hamstring in practice on Friday, while Mosley has been dealing with a hamstring injury since the end of the Jets’ Week 5 loss to the Falcons. Kroft was ruled out with a back injury earlier in the week and has not played since Week 4.

Mosley’s absence leaves a hole in the middle of New York’s defense, which will be filled by rookie Jamien Sherwood. Mike LaFleur’s backfield should be in good shape even without Coleman, as Michael Carter and Ty Johnson have shouldered more of the load in recent weeks. Ryan Griffin will get the start at tight end, with Daniel Brown, Trevon Wesco and Kenny Yeboah working behind him.

Denzel Mims gets the nod at wide receiver over Jeff Smith, as the Jets were left with a decision to make with seven healthy wideouts on the roster. Mims had his best game of the season against Atlanta, catching two passes for 33 yards in limited action.

As for the Patriots, they will be without star linebacker Dont’a Hightower and running back Rhamondre Stevenson, who scored a touchdown in New England’s overtime loss to the Cowboys last weekend. Starting cornerback Jonathan Jones is also out after landing on injured reserve during the week.

Jets LB C.J. Mosley a game-time decision vs. Patriots

Jets LB C.J. Mosley will be a game-time decision against the Patriots on Sunday.

C.J. Mosley will be a game-time decision against the Patriots on Sunday.

The Jets linebacker is dealing with a hamstring injury suffered in New York’s Week 5 loss to Atlanta in London. Gang Green won’t decide on Mosley’s Week 7 status until Sunday morning.

“C.J.’s gonna go down to the wire,” Robert Saleh said Friday.

Should Mosley miss his first game of the season, rookie Jamien Sherwood will step in as New York’s MIKE linebacker. Saleh and DC Jeff Ulbrich have both expressed confidence in the first-year pro’s ability to lead New York’s defense.

“He studies his butt off,” Saleh said of Sherwood, adding that the fifth-round pick is already an advanced tackler. “He belongs.”

Saleh added that Tyler Kroft is likely a no-go on Sunday. The tight end is recovering from a back injury and “doesn’t look good” for the Patriots rematch.

Who will Jets’ MIKE linebacker be if C.J. Mosley can’t play vs. Patriots?

Jamien Sherwood would work as the Jets’ MIKE linebacker if C.J. Mosley (hamstring) can’t play against the Patriots in Week 7.

C.J. Mosley popped up on the Jets’ post-practice injury report on Wednesday after not practicing due to a hamstring injury suffered against the Falcons before the bye week.

New York’s veteran linebacker has been uberly productive in his return to the field this season, but he is now in danger of missing the team’s Week 7 trip to New England to take on the Patriots.

Jamien Sherwood is next in line to play the MIKE linebacker role in Jeff Ulbrich’s defense if Mosley cannot play against the Patriots, according to Robert Saleh. Most of the rookie’s snaps so far this season have come on the strong side in place of the injured Jarrad Davis.

Mosley leads the Jets in tackles with 45 to go along with a forced fumble and a sack. He also handles play-calling duties from the middle of New York’s defense. That responsibility would shift to Sherwood if Mosley is unable to suit up.

“Obviously when it comes to those lower-extremity injuries, you just kind of feel the player out. Each one is different,” Saleh said. “We’re 10 days out now, so we’ll see how the week goes.”

Mosley, who experienced the ill effects of coming back too soon from a groin injury in his first season with the Jets, is proceeding with caution despite the groin strain being more serious than his barking hamstring.

“It’s something that if you get back too early or you try to push too fast, it can make things worse,” Mosley said. “Honestly, it’s just a day-to-day thing.”

Even with Sherwood potentially shifting to middle linebacker, the Jets would be left razor-thin at linebacker without Mosley. Davis is still out and Hamsah Nasirildeen is on injured reserve, leaving Mosley, Sherwood and Quincy Williams as New York’s starters. Blake Cashman, who recently returned from a hamstring injury, has yet to play a defensive snap this season.

Mosley is not the Jets’ only banged-up player coming out of the bye week, as Tyler Kroft (back) missed practice and Marcus Maye (ankle) was limited on Wednesday. Adrian Colbert (concussion), Nathan Shepherd (knee) and Jeff Smith (concussion) were full participants.

Former Rutgers football star Tyler Kroft still not practicing with the New York Jets

Tyler Kroft, a former standout tight end with Rutgers, did not practice with the New York Jets on Thursday due to a back injury.

Former Rutgers football star Tyler Kroft remains unable to practice, but the New York Jets tight end is getting respect from his head coach.

Kroft did not play two weeks ago in the Jets 27-20 loss at the Atlanta Falcons. And coming off a bye week, the hope was that he would be available for practice this week. But head coach Robert Saleh said that the player was not going to return to the practice field on Wednesday.

Saleh termed the injury “a back issue.”

“He’s fighting his way back,” Saleh told reporters on Wednesday. “I give him credit, it’s not easy what he’s going through.”

Kroft has six catches for 46 yards this season. He signed this offseason with the Jets as a free agent.

A multi-year starter with Rutgers, Kroft was a First-Team All-AAC selection in 2013. The Cincinnati Bengals made him a third-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.

He spent the first four seasons of his NFL career with the organization and they spent the next two years with the Buffalo Bills before joining the Jets this offseason.

Jets vs. Falcons Week 5 injury report: 6 players ruled out for London game

The Jets and Falcons will be without some key contributors when they meet up in London.

The Jets and Falcons will be without some key contributors when they meet up in London.

The good news is that the Jets expect to have WR Elijah Moore and CB Brandin Echols back after both cleared concussion protocol. The Jets will also make use of undrafted rookie TE Kenny Yeboah for the first time, as they are short at tight end.

Gang Green won’t have S Marcus Maye either, but that was expected. The plan is for him to return after the Week 6 bye.

Below, you can see the full injury report for the Jets and the Falcons, who have ruled out a total of six players.

Jets TE Kenny Yeboah to make NFL debut vs. Falcons in London

UDFA TE Kenny Yeboah will make his NFL and Jets debut vs. the Falcons in London.

Undrafted free agent tight end Kenny Yeboah will get his first taste of regular-season action against the Falcons after the Jets promoted him from the practice squad, Robert Saleh confirmed Friday.

Fellow tight end Tyler Kroft was ruled out for Week 5 with a back injury.

Yeboah played well in the Jets’ final preseason game, catching four passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns against the Eagles — including a tie-clinching Hail Mary grab — but he failed to make the initial 53-man roster. He’s spent the past four weeks on the practice squad with Kroft, Ryan Griffin and Daniel Brown as the Jets’ top three tight ends.

The Jets had a fourth-round grade on Yeboah entering the draft but waited until after the draft to sign him to a fully guaranteed $180,000 base salary with a $20,000 signing bonus – a relatively large contract for an undrafted player. Yeboah enjoyed a solid collegiate career at Ole Miss and Temple, finishing with 74 receptions for 1,062 yards and 12 touchdowns.

WR Elijah Moore and CB Brandin Echols are also expected to play.

Jets injury report: Marcus Maye and Elijah Moore ruled out, Jamison Crowder questionable vs. Titans

Three Jets players have been ruled out for the team’s Week 4 matchup with the Titans, while three more have been listed as questionable.

Three Jets players have been ruled out for the team’s Week 4 matchup with the Titans, while three more have been listed as questionable.

Marcus Maye, Elijah Moore and Jeff Smith will not suit up against Tennessee. Maye is out with an ankle injury. Moore and Smith are both dealing with concussions, with Smith’s occurring in a car accident on his way to One Jets Drive during the week.

Jamison Crowder is listed as questionable with a groin injury, but the expectation is that he will return against the Titans. Crowder has missed New York’s first three games after a bout with COVID and a groin injury suffered after his return from the reserve list.

Here is a look at Gang Green’s full injury report ahead of Sunday’s action.

Jets injury report: Elijah Moore in concussion protocol, Tyler Kroft injures ribs vs. Broncos

Tyler Kroft suffered a ribs injury and Elijah Moore is in concussion protocol after the Jets’ 26-0 loss to the Broncos.

The Jets lost two of their offensive starters to injury against the Broncos, as Elijah Moore and Tyler Kroft both departed and did not return.

Kroft suffered a ribs injury, according to Robert Saleh, while Moore is in concussion protocol after suffering a blow to the head.

Moore caught three passes for 22 yards working before leaving New York’s 26-0 loss to Denver. Keelan Cole and Jeff Smith saw playing time on the outside in place of Moore. Kroft hauled in two passes for 12 yards and gave way to Ryan Griffin after leaving with his ribs injury.

Griffin would likely take over as the Jets’ starting tight end in the event that Kroft cannot suit up against the Titans next weekend. Moore’s potential absence would leave New York shorthanded at wide receiver, as Jamison Crowder is still dealing with a groin injury and Denzel Mims has been a healthy scratch the last two weeks.
