Quincy Williams says he knew he would sack Russell Wilson at end of game

Quincy Williams says he knew he was going to sack Russell Wilson at end of game

Jets linebacker Quincy Williams is quickly becoming one of the top linebackers in the NFL right before our eyes. The latest example came at the end of Sunday’s game against the Broncos.

With Denver driving with a chance to tie or even win the game, Williams came up with the play of the game to help secure the victory for the Jets. Williams came off the edge, got to Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson and caused a fumble with a strip-sack, his second sack of the game. The fumble was scooped up by cornerback Bryce Hall and returned 39 yards to put the game on ice and give the Jets a 31-21 victory to snap a three-game losing streak and move to 2-3.

Williams told reporters after the game he knew as soon as the play call came in that he was getting to Wilson.

“Ain’t nobody outrunning me,” Williams said. “I’m the fastest linebacker in the league.”

Williams even said he was surprised defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich called the play since they hadn’t practiced or called the play in a while.

The Jets gave Williams a three-year, $18 million contract over the offseason. He is quickly making that a bargain for the Jets.

‘Offseason champs’ Jets troll ‘Home Team’ Broncos after Week 5 win

‘Offseason champs’ Jets troll ‘Home Team’ Broncos after Week 5 win

The New York Jets scored a much-needed 31-21 win over the Denver Broncos in Week 5 after linebacker Quincy Williams and cornerback Bryce Hall combined to ice the game with just over 30 seconds left.

Very shortly after the game was over, the Jets’ social media team scored their own victory, trolling the “offseason champs” as they put it after the Broncos were seen as a potential contender after trading for head coach Sean Payton in the offseason and thinking he would reinvent quarterback Russell Wilson.

The Jets put their own spin on one of the latest memes swirling the internet that feature actor Kevin James. As you’ll recall, James played Payton in the 2022 movie Home Team, a movie telling the story of Payton coaching his 12-year-old son’s football team during his one-year suspension as a result of his role in the BountyGate scandal.

The Jets photoshopped a Broncos visor on James and captioned the photo “When you lose to the offseason champs.”

The line comes from Payton’s comments in an interview this summer with Jarrett Bell of USA Today.

“It doesn’t happen often where an NFL team or organization gets embarrassed,” Payton said back in the summer. “And that happened here. Part of it was their own fault, relative to spending so much [expletive] time trying to win the offseason—the PR, the pomp and circumstance, marching people around and all this stuff.

“We’re not doing any of that. The Jets did that this year. You watch. Hard Knocks, all of it. I can see it coming.”

Payton can now see 1-4 as his record and the one win was overcoming a 21-point deficit against the Chicago Bears.

Somebody give the social media staff a raise.

Instant analysis as Jets turn Sean Payton’s coaching job to 1-4 start

Instant analysis as Jets turn Sean Payton’s coaching job to 1-4 start

Broncos head coach Sean Payton said Jets offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett did one of the worst coaching jobs ever when he was leading the Broncos in 2022. Sean Payton is now 1-4 as head coach of the Broncos after the Jets come out of Denver with a 31-21 win to snap a three-game losing streak and move to 2-3 heading into a Week 6 showdown with the Eagles.

Here’s our instant thoughts and game notes from the Week 5 win.

Quincy Williams, Bryce Hall combine to seal victory for Jets

Quincy Williams, Bryce Hall combine to seal victory for Jets

The Broncos thought they were building momentum. They gained 20 yards on a 3rd and 15 and were on their way to at least tying the game and sending them and the Jets to overtime.

Quincy Williams and Bryce Hall had other ideas.

With about 40 seconds left, Williams got around the edge and sacked Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson, causing a fumble that almost went out of bounds. But before it did, Hall scooped up the football and ran 39 yards for a touchdown that sealed the deal for the Jets.

New York ends their three-game losing streak and moves to 2-3 heading into a week 6 matchup with the defending NFC champion and 5-0 Philadelphia Eagles.

Jets gameday roster for Week 5 vs. Broncos

The Jets’ gameday roster and inactives for Week 5 against the Denver Broncos

Carl Lawson and Mecole Hardman are not playing Sunday against the Broncos, adding a little fuel to the fire that one, maybe both, could be trade candidates later this month, particularly Lawson. Regardless, the Jets have their guys that are ready to go against the Broncos. Here’s your gameday roster for Week 5, including practice-squad elevations and inactives.

Final prediction for Jets vs. Broncos in Week 5

Final prediction for Jets vs. Broncos in Week 5. What is your score prediction?

There aren’t often “must-win games” in Week 5, but the New York Jets are almost at that point. Entering Sunday at 1-3 and visiting a 1-3 Denver Broncos team, the Jets really can’t afford a major slipup here to fall to 1-4 with the Philadelphia Eagles looming in Week 6. This game is majorly important to the Jets.

The key Sunday is the Jets have to find a way to allow quarterback Zach Wilson to replicate his performance from last week against the Chiefs. Find a way to allow Wilson to continue feeling confident in his abilities and let him make plays and throw the ball downfield. An expanded offense — and having Breece Hall not tied down to a pitch count — can do wonders for the development of Wilson and the chances of New York winning this football game.

Denver has also struggled on defense, so this could be a perfect opportunity for Nathaniel Hackett to really start toying with the playbook. Denver certainly isn’t as bad as the 70-20 game against the Miami Dolphins, but it’s a down unit overall, nonetheless. Injuries have affected their play, but it’s still a unit that can be much better.

The Jets’ secondary depth will certainly be tested Sunday with both D.J. Reed and Brandin Echols out against the Broncos. We’ll see what the Jets do with their lineup, whether it’s Bryce Hall or Michael Carter II who steps in as the starter outside opposite Sauce Gardner. Gardner against either Courtland Sutton or Jerry Jeudy will obviously be a matchup to watch.

Overall, this is a big one for the Eagles. Don’t get caught looking ahead to the Eagles. But at 1-3, they shouldn’t be overlooking anyone anyway. Denver is favored, but the Jets built some momentum, despite the loss to the Chiefs. Even with the secondary injuries, the Jets should be able to control the ball and should be giving Breece Hall every opportunity for an explosive play.

Prediction: Jets 31, Broncos 23

Jets inactives for Week 5 vs. Broncos: Carl Lawson, Mecole Hardman out

Jets inactives for Week 5 vs. Broncos: Carl Lawson, Mecole Hardman out

The Jets have announced their inactives for their Week 5 trip to the Mile High City against the Denver Broncos.

Both Carl Lawson and Mecole Hardman are out for Sunday’s game. Both have become very limited players, especially in the case of Hardman. The Jets elevated WR Irvin Charles from the practice squad, a sign the Jets were going to make Hardman a healthy scratch. Charles helps on special teams while Hardman does not.

Lawson has also fallen down the pecking order and may soon become a potential trade candidate with the trade deadline looming. He took a pay cut this offseason to stay with the Jets and now he is taking a playing time cut.

The other inactives were pretty much either known or have been consistent. CBs D.J. Reed (concussion) and Brandin Echols (hamstring) are out and the others are weekly scratches: LB Zaire Barnes, RB Israel Abanikanda and WR Jason Brownlee.

The Broncos inactives are RB Javonte Williams, C Alex Forsyth, LB Thomas Incoom, CB Fabian Moreau and S JL Skinner.

4 reasons the Jets can beat the Broncos in Week 5

4 reasons the Jets can beat the Broncos in Week 5

The New York Jets are basically facing a must-have game in Week 5 against the Denver Broncos. The Jets are 1-3, facing a bad Broncos team and have a date with the Eagles in Week 6. If they’re not careful, they’ll be 1-5 and on a five-game losing streak entering their Week 7 bye.

That said, the Jets absolutely can win this game in Denver in Week 5 and get themselves back on track at 2-3 with a chance to get to .500 at their bye. Here are four reasons they can get the victory Sunday.

The Denver Broncos were expected to at least take a step forward this season with Sean Payton as their head coach. Instead, they got off to an 0-3 start and would be 0-4 if the Chicago Bears didn’t stumble and bumble in the second half, allowing Denver to erase a 28-7 deficit for their first win of the season.

The Jets pay them a visit in Week 5 and we pay a visit to Broncos Wire to chat with editor Jon Heath to get some insight into Denver’s season, including if this defense really is as bad as they looked against Miami.
