Patriots release RB Tyler Gaffney, sign DB Malik Gant

The Patriots made some room for a familiar face in Malik Gant.

The New England Patriots released running back Tyler Gaffney on Tuesday to make room and sign defensive back Malik Gant.

Gaffney had multiple short stints with the Patriots and he was brought on this offseason to provide depth during practice. The Patriots are now healthy at running back with Sony Michel, Damien Harris, James White, Rhamondre Stevenson, JJ Taylor and Brandon Bolden available.

Gant was signed by the Patriots as an undrafted free agent in 2019, but he was injured and in the preseason spent the season on the injured reserve list — eventually being released in July of 2020. He’s 6-foot-3, 203 pound and provides an extra body at the position heading into the preseason this year.

The Patriots’ first preseason matchup is on Thursday against the Washington Football Team.

RB Tyler Gaffney re-signs with Patriots

The New England Patriots signed running back Tyler Gaffney on Thursday.

Running back Tyler Gaffney is returning to the New England Patriots, the team announced on Friday.

Retiring from the NFL in 2018, Gaffney took a break from football to play baseball. He played in 51 games for Class AA Altomma, a farm team in the Pittsburgh Pirates system. He retired from baseball in March 2019.

This is Gaffney’s second go-around with the Patriots. Even though he has never played a down of NFL football, he was on New England’s injured reserve list in 2014 and spent 2016 on practice squad.

Gaffney joins a crowded running back room that includes the likes of Damien Harris, James White, and Sony Michel.

49ers add extra RB to practice squad with Raheem Mostert out

The San Francisco 49ers are once again in a spot where they may have to shuffle their backfield. Raheem Mostert is out for the year with an ankle injury and Austin Walter is on the COVID-19 list, so San Francisco added running back Tyler Gaffney to their practice squad as an additional option in their injury-ravaged backfield.

Gaffney was a sixth-round pick of the Panthers out of Stanford in the 2014 draft. He’s also spent time with the Patriots and Jaguars. Gaffney hasn’t made his NFL debut yet, and retired in 2018 before making his way back into the league with the 49ers.

Jeff Wilson Jr. figures to lead the 49ers’ backfield in Week 16 vs. the Cardinals, but he’s dealing with the after effects of a high ankle sprain. Tevin Coleman and Jerick McKinnon are also on the active roster, so Gaffney will give them some insurance should they encounter more injury issues.
