Colorado lineman Tyler Brown practicing as two-way player

CU is developing another two-way player

In August, we learned that redshirt freshman Isaiah Hardge joined Travis Hunter in Colorado football’s “gray jersey club,” playing both offense and defense. The Buffs are now developing another two-way player, and he’s even practicing in a new color.

Starting offensive guard Tyler Brown has been seen in Well Off Media YouTube videos getting reps at defensive tackle while getting coached up by graduate assistant and Pro Football Hall of Famer Warren Sapp.

Speculation ran wild on social media about a possible position switch for Brown. All questions were put aside when another video emerged of head coach Deion Sanders asking Brown, clad in a blue practice jersey, to break down the team while confirming, “We got another two-way player.”

Listed at 6-foot-3 and 310 pounds, Brown has a game built on strength and versatility. He was Colorado’s starting right tackle to begin the season before returning to his more natural guard position. CU has recently employed a rotation at both guard positions, freeing up Brown to get reps along the defensive line.

If he does get playing time in a game, I expect to see him at tackle, where he can push around the interior offensive line to stop the run.

Dabo Swinney shares Clemson wide receiver Tyler Brown will not play in Louisville game

Brown is set to miss another game.

Clemson football will be missing wide receiver Tyler Brown in Saturday’s game against Louisville as he recovers from an ankle injury. Head coach Dabo Swinney confirmed Brown’s absence, stating, “He won’t be ready this week… he’s still week-to-week, but not ready to make him day-to-day yet.”

Brown, who underwent tightrope ankle surgery, has been making steady progress. “He’s made a lot of progress,” Swinney said. “He’s gone from a scooter, to crutches, to a cane, and now he’s moving without any of that. So, he’s getting better.”

The 5-foot-11, 180-pound sophomore has missed Clemson’s last two games against Virginia and Wake Forest. Brown has recorded five catches for 30 yards in the four games he’s played this season. Last year, the Greenville native earned freshman All-American honors from ESPN, leading Clemson in receptions (52) and receiving yards (531), becoming only the fifth freshman since 2010 to record 50 catches in a season for the Tigers.

With the amount of time Brown has missed, there is a real chance he could take a redshirt year.

Dabo Swinney shares injury updates on key wide receivers Bryant Wesco, Tyler Brown

Swinney updates the injury status of two top Clemson wide receivers.

During his Tuesday press conference, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney provided injury updates on two of his young receivers, Bryant Wesco and Tyler Brown Jr.. The Tigers, coming off a bye, are preparing for their upcoming matchup against Louisville, and both wideouts’ recoveries remain in focus as they approach game day.

Freshman standout Bryant Wesco, who has been sidelined with an ankle injury for Clemson’s last two games, showed improvement during the team’s break. Swinney shared that this week’s practices will be key in determining Wesco’s availability for Saturday night. “He got off to a good start last week,” Swinney noted, “but today and tomorrow are big days. Really strenuous, physical days getting these guys ready for Saturday night.” Swinney expressed optimism, adding, “Hopefully, he’ll have a good week and be ready to go.” Wesco, a former five-star recruit from Texas, started strong this season, with 11 catches for 262 yards and two touchdowns across his first five games, averaging nearly 24 yards per catch.

Meanwhile, sophomore Tyler Brown Jr. remains out due to a high ankle sprain and won’t be available against Louisville. Though progressing in his recovery, Brown is still considered “week-to-week,” according to Swinney.

“He’s made a lot of progress,” Swinney said, mentioning the various stages of Brown’s recovery, from using a scooter and crutches to walking independently. Swinney hinted at the possibility of redshirting Brown if he misses additional games, as he’s appeared in four games so far. “If he misses a couple more, then that’s a decision we might consider,” Swinney explained, adding that it will depend on Clemson’s personnel needs in the coming weeks.

The No. 11 Tigers will face Louisville at 7:30 p.m. ET in Death Valley, and with both receivers on the mend, the team aims to keep building on their momentum in conference play.

Clemson wide receiver Tyler Brown underwent surgery.

Clemson football’s offense has been on a hot run, but will have to continue to keep it going without one of heir top offensive players.

Tigers’ head coach, Dabo Swinney, provided an update on wide receiver Brown following the Tigers’ 48-31 win over Virginia. Brown, who was seen on the sidelines in a boot and using a scooter, recently underwent tightrope surgery on his ankle.

Swinney shared optimism that Brown could return in time for Clemson’s next game against Louisville on November 2, thanks in part to the upcoming bye week. “We’re hopeful with the open date that he’ll make good progress,” Swinney said. “He was doing well, but he plateaued, so this should help with the final healing process.”

Brown has had a limited role this season after leading the team in receptions, yards, and touchdowns last year. He has only five catches for 30 yards in 2024, with his last appearance being a few snaps against Florida State on October 5.

Swinney updates the status of two wide receivers.

Clemson football’s offense showcased its power in a 29-13 victory over Florida State, marking the third time the Tigers have racked up 500 yards of offense this season. Despite not reaching the 40-point mark, they found plenty of positives to build on. Head Coach Dabo Swinney praised freshman kicker Nolan Hauser, who stepped up to make five field goals. However, the downside was Clemson’s struggle to convert red-zone opportunities into touchdowns, as they settled for field goals on five drives that reached inside the 20-yard line.

Running back Phil Mafah put on an impressive performance, tallying a season-high 154 rushing yards. Quarterback Cade Klubnik continued his recent run of strong outings, completing 74 of 114 passes for 1,077 yards, 14 touchdowns, and only one interception over the last four games. Now, Clemson prepares for an upcoming game at Wake Forest, a team the Tigers haven’t lost to since 2008.

In injury updates, Swinney shared the latest on wide receivers Tyler Brown and Adam Randall, who are working their way back onto the field. Brown suffered a high ankle sprain early in Clemson’s win over Appalachian State on Sept. 7, keeping him out of the following game against NC State and limiting his play in the wins over Stanford and Florida State. Swinney noted Brown’s potential, emphasizing his impact once he’s fully recovered. “You mention Tyler Brown, he is AWOL, right? Nobody even asks me about Tyler Brown,” Swinney said half-jokingly. “But y’all will eventually if we can ever get him healthy. He is going to be a great player, but everything kind of went good for him last year, and he has been battling to get back. Hopefully, he can truly have a full week of practice this week and take another step forward.”

As for Randall, he’s been sidelined for Clemson’s last two games after a stress fracture in his toe required a screw implant. Randall made the trip to Tallahassee and even participated in warmups, eager to contribute. Swinney was cautious, though, saying, “We got Adam back, which is amazing. He was ready to go last week. I was really nervous about it, but he was adamant to play. I am glad we did not need him.”

Clemson is set to take on Wake Forest this Saturday, with kickoff scheduled for noon on ESPN in Winston-Salem, N.C., as the Tigers look to extend their winning streak against the Demon Deacons.

Clemson standout wide receiver out for ACC rivalry matchup against NC State

Clemson will be without a key wide receiver.

Sophomore wide receiver Tyler Brown will be sidelined for Clemson’s game today against NC State. Brown, who injured his ankle in the blowout win over Appalachian State, was not dressed for the game, despite not appearing on Clemson’s pregame availability report.

Brown has contributed four catches for 23 yards across the Tigers’ first two games this season. His absence could be felt in Clemson’s passing game, as the wideout was a key player in 2023, leading the team with 52 receptions and 531 receiving yards. He also scored four touchdowns last season, quickly emerging as one of the Tigers’ most reliable targets.

Brown’s absence will likely lead to more opportunities for other receivers to step up as Clemson opens ACC play today. His recovery will be closely monitored in the coming weeks as the Tigers look to build on their early-season momentum.

Dabo Swinney shares an update on Tyler Brown.

Clemson football head coach Dabo Swinney offered an update on wide receiver Tyler Brown’s status during his press conference on Tuesday. Brown exited the Tigers’ 56-20 win over Appalachian State with an ankle injury.

“He was out there yesterday,” Swinney said. “Same thing. Day to day. He is getting better every day. We’ll see how it goes Saturday.”

Brown, who started both games this season, was limited to just five snaps against Appalachian State before leaving with the injury. He managed one catch for a loss of two yards in that outing. In the season opener against Georgia, he was on the field for 26 snaps, making three catches for 25 yards.

Last season, Brown made a significant impact as a freshman, earning freshman All-American honors. He led the team with 52 receptions and 531 receiving yards, adding four touchdown catches to his impressive debut season. His potential return could be crucial for the Tigers moving forward.

Tyler Brown speaks on emotions heading into long-awaited Colorado debut

Tyler Brown spoke with Buffs Wire about the emotions surrounding his long-awaited Colorado debut

One of the more intriguing storylines heading into Colorado football’s season opener against North Dakota State is the long-awaited Buffs debut of Tyler Brown.

Prior to last season, the former Jackson State offensive lineman was denied eligibility in a widely criticized ruling from the NCAA. Brown, a two-time transfer who began his college career at Louisiana, appeared worthy of an immediate eligibility waiver due to his documented mental health struggles, but the NCAA ultimately forced Brown to sit out his first season in Boulder.

At CU’s fall sports media day earlier this month, I asked Brown about the emotions surrounding his looming Colorado debut:

“I’ve never been so excited for a college football season in my life,” Brown told Buffaloes Wire. “I wake up giddy every day because it’s one day closer to the game. Not being able to play last year has brought a whole new perspective and a whole new level of appreciation for the game that I love because I couldn’t do what I love. Yeah, I could practice. Yeah, I could lift weights. But I couldn’t help the team when the team needed the most, and that really made me grind and work harder. I wake up so excited and thankful every day.”

The 6-foot-3, 310-pound offensive lineman added that there might be some tears when he finally takes Folsom Field next Thursday.

Tyler Brown’s positional versatility could help his NFL draft stock

Positional versatility could help Tyler Brown reach the next level

Eagle-eyed viewers of Colorado Buffaloes practice clips have noticed that offensive linemen such as Tyler Brown have played different positions on the line. This positional versatility is vital for coaches to know, but it can also help those players reach the next level.

Those clips also caught the eyes of Jake Schwanitz and Ryan Koenigsberg of DNVR Buffs, who recently discussed Brown on their YouTube show. Standing at 6-foot-3 and 310 pounds, Brown made a name for himself at Lousiana and Jackson State as a guard but is also capable of playing on the outside.

Schwanitz had the following to say about Brown’s NFL draft prospects:

Tyler Brown, SWAC first-team, FCS All-American, and he was part of a line when he was at Lousiana that was up for the Joe Moore Award for one of the best offensive lines in the country,” Schwanitz said. “Tyler Brown’s got versatility in his bag. He’s been displaying it, but now he gets to display it further. This could be massive for his draft stock.”

During CU’s fall sports media day on Friday, Brown told Buffaloes Wire’s Jack Carlough the following:

“I feel comfortable anywhere and everywhere,” Brown told Buffaloes Wire. “I think that the best thing about me is I’m an athlete and I’m very versatile. Wherever the coach needs me to play I can play.”

Garrett Riley is ready for star wide receiver Tyler Brown to take the next step

Tyler Brown could be in for a huge season.

Clemson has a star at wide receiver in sophomore Tyler Brown.

As a true freshman, Brown was the Tigers’ top performer at wide receiver. Brown made an immediate impact at Clemson, earning Freshman All-American honors from ESPN. He led the team in receptions and receiving yards as a freshman, totaling 52 catches for 531 yards and four touchdowns.

Heading into the 2024 season, Brown is one of the Tigers’ most important players. This offense needs to improve, and Brown is an integral part of making that possible.

Clemson offensive coordinator Garrett Riley is expecting Brown to take the next step, discussing the young wide receiver at this week at Clemson’s annual media outing.

“I certainly think now, he’s going to take that to another step now that he’s played… now that he’s been in this offense for a year,” Riley said. So, really look for him to certainly improve from year one to year two. Even though he had a good year one, he’s got to take another big step here in year two.”

Clemson’s wide receiver room is an interesting one heading into the season. It’s up in the air who will be the target leader, but Brown is the early favorite after last season.

“Tyler’s a guy, what’s incredible about him is obviously he’s skilled, but mentally, he can just handle things,” Riley said. “That’s what I’ve been impressed with, with him, since day one.”
