Titans coach gives positive update after waiting out hurricane

Titans coach Tyke Tolbert provided an update after having to wait out Hurricane Beryl in Jamaica.

Tennessee Titans wide receivers coach Tyke Tolbert picked a bad time to go on vacation in Jamaica, as the country was hit by Hurricane Beryl the same week he’s there.

Tolbert tweeted through the storm, which was a Category 4 hurricane as it passed through Jamaica. The veteran coach even shared a picture of the ballroom of his resort, which was filled with people waiting it out.

However, later that night, Tolbert revealed that after 12 hours, he was allowed to return to his room and everything was fine, which we could not be happier to hear.

Then, on Monday, Tolbert shared a picture of he and his family enjoying themselves.

The Titans hired Tolbert as their new wide receivers coach earlier this offseason. He’s replacing former wide receivers Coach Rob Moore, who went to the Carolina Panthers in the wake of former head coach Mike Vrabel being fired.

Tolbert will oversee what projects to be one of the better wide receivers rooms in the NFL.

Tolbert has been tweeting through the scary situation. First, he shared a picture of the ballroom of the resort he’s staying at. Then, he shared a radar image of where he is relative to where the storm is expected to pass through on Wednesday.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Jamaica and everyone else who is riding out the storm like coach Tolbert is.

Tolbert is entering his first season with the Titans after the team hired him earlier this offseason. He spent the last two years as the Chicago Bears’ wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator.

New Titans WRs coach Tyke Tolbert: 3 things to know

Three things to know about new Titans WRs coach Tyke Tolbert.

The second coaching staff hire made by Tennessee Titans head coach Brian Callahan and general manager Ran Carthon was former Chicago Bears wide receivers coach, Tyke Tolbert, who is taking the same role in Nashville.

Tolbert, who also served as the passing-game coordinator in Chicago, brings a wealth of experience with him to Tennessee.

He’s been a wide receivers coach in the NFL since 2003. Before that, he was a college coach and worked with both tight ends and wide receivers.

Whether it’s been in college or the pros, Tolbert has a history of success when it comes to developing young pass-catchers.

We’ll talk about that and more as we take a look at three things to know about the Titans’ new wide receivers coach.

Twitter reacts to Titans hiring Tyke Tolbert as WRs coach

How Twitter reacted to the news that the Titans are hiring Tyke Tolbert as WRs coach.

Tennessee Titans head coach Brian Callahan has made the first known addition to his offensive staff.

According to NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe, the Titans are hiring former Chicago Bears wide receivers coach and passing-game coordinator Tyke Tolbert as their wide receivers coach.

Wolfe adds that Tolbert was in high demand but ultimately chose to work for the Titans because of Callahan, who he has a connection with from their days together with the Denver Broncos, where they won a Super Bowl in 2015.

Tolbert, who was fired by the Bears last month, brings a wealth of experience with him to Nashville. He’s been a coach at the professional level since 2003, and he held multiple college jobs before that.

On Tolbert’s watch, the Bears’ passing attack improved from dead-last in 2022 to No. 27 in 2023. In addition, Bears wideout DJ Moore had a career-best season in the latter year.

And, as you’ll find out by scrolling through the Twitter reaction below, he has a history of developing other good receivers.

Titans hiring Tyke Tolbert as WRs coach

The Titans are reportedly hiring former Bears coach Tyke Tolbert as their new wide receivers coach.

The Tennessee Titans have reportedly found their man for their vacant wide receivers coach position.

According to NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe, the Titans are hiring former Chicago Bears wide receivers coach and passing-game coordinator, Tyke Tolbert, as their next wide receivers coach.

Wolfe notes that Tolbert chose the Titans over two other teams “in part due to Titans (head coach) Brian Callahan.”

The 56-year-old coach has a connection with Callahan after both worked for the Broncos from 2011 to 2015. Tolbert remained in Denver for two more years after Callahan departed for the Detroit Lions.

Tolbert, who will be replacing former Titans wide receivers coach Rob Moore, was with the Bears for two seasons in his aforementioned roles.

He’s also held the wide receivers coach job with the Arizona Cardinals, Buffalo Bills, Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos and New York Giants.

The best notch on Tolbert’s belt from his two years with the Bears was the fact that wide receiver D.J. Moore had a career year in 2023. Chicago also saw a slight improvement from its passing game, with the unit going from dead-last in 2022 to No. 27 in 2023.

Tolbert is the first known hire on Callahan’s offensive staff. He has yet to hire an offensive coordinator.

Bears WR coach Tyke Tolbert provides injury update on Darnell Mooney

The hope is Bears WR Darnell Mooney is ready come training camp.

Chicago Bears wide receiver Darnell Mooney is on the mend following a season-ending ankle injury in Week 12 of last season. Before his injury, Mooney was the team’s top wideout during an abysmal passing season for Chicago.

Bears wide receivers coach Tyke Tolbert provided an encouraging update on Mooney, who’s been spotted running during offseason workouts.

“He’s great with his rehab,” Tolbert said Saturday at rookie minicamp, via Courtney Cronin. “He’s running right now. He’d doing well…His attitude has been great. He’s in here every single day.”

As for whether or not Mooney will be ready come training camp, Tolbert said he “certainly hopes” that’s the case.

The good news is Mooney won’t have to rush back. The Bears overhauled their wide receiver group with the offseason additions of DJ Moore and rookie Tyler Scott. They join Chase Claypool, Equanimeous St. Brown, Velus Jones Jr., and Mooney.

Mooney, a former fifth-round pick, has been a late-round success story for the Bears. He’s entering a contract year, where he’ll be looking to earn a second contract with Chicago.

In his last full season, Mooney had a monster season with 81 catches for 1,055 yards and four touchdowns.

Bear Necessities: Tyke Tolbert praises under-the-radar WRs Tajae Sharpe, Dazz Newsome

The Bears have dealt with injuries at receiver, which has allowed guys like Tajae Sharpe and Dazz Newsome opportunities to shine.

The Chicago Bears have dealt with injuries at wide receiver, which has allowed players further down the depth chart opportunities to shine. Tajae Sharpe and Dazz Newsome are two of those players who have boosted their stock as they look for a roster spot.

Sharpe has emerged as one of quarterback Justin Fields’ new weapons during training camp, and it translated to the field during the preseason opener against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Sharpe caught both passes thrown his way for 44 yards, including an impressive sideline grab from Fields. He’s showing why he deserves a spot on the roster — and involvement on offense.

“Smart guy,” said wide receivers coach Tyke Tolbert, via ChicagoBears.com. “He knows the offense well. He can play any position. We have him more on the outside, X and Z. He has some vet savviness to him, kind of knows what defenses are going to do to him sometimes. [He’s] one of the most experienced guys in the room. He’s been in NFL games before, made NFL plays before, scored NFL touchdowns before, so he knows how to go in there and play.”

Newsome didn’t get off to the most reassuring start in the preseason opener. Newsome, who’s listed as the starting punt returner, muffed a punt and then lost 10 yards when he tried to gain yardage.

But Newsome rebounded with a solid offensive showing, where he had one reception for 10 yards and a touchdown. He also added one rush for 13 yards.

“You’re showing that you have confidence in him,” Tolbert said. “Everybody makes mistakes. Players make mistakes, coaches make mistakes. It’s the next play up. You have to be able to go onto the next play. We want to show him that we have the confidence in him for him to make some plays, and he did. He responded well to that little bit of adversity he had on that punt in the game. We’re glad to see that.”

Newsome should get plenty of reps against the Seahawks where starters are going to be limited. Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear Sharpe will suit up for Thursday’s game as he’s day-to-day with an undisclosed injury.
