Ty Law spares no one in epic rant on players involved in Patriots’ botched lateral play

Ty Law called out Rhamondre Stevenson, Mac Jones and Jakobi Meyers for the botched lateral play.

Former New England Patriots legendary corner Ty Law had an epic rant prepared, following the embarrassing Week 15 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium on Sunday.

With three seconds left in the game and the score tied in the fourth quarter, the Patriots ran a play that ended in Rhamondre Stevenson tossing a lateral pass to Jakobi Meyers, who then tried another lateral that was picked off and taken back for a game-winning touchdown by Chandler Jones.

Law gave the coaching staff a pass and noted that coach Bill Belichick makes a point, more so than any other coach he’s ever had, to teach good situational football. So this particular rant was directed solely at the players involved.

“You have an opportunity to play another series. The strength of your team is the defense,” said Law, when appearing on The Greg Hill Show. “How in the hell can you not go down? Do you see Rhamondre Stevenson’s stat line? 172 yards and 19 carries. But don’t nobody talk about him. But he’s the one that got the damn party started. He’s the one that pitches the first pass.

“Now Jakobi Meyers should have looked at that and been like, ‘You big dummy. What are you doing?’ And land the ball and got down, but he was like, ‘Oh, I guess it’s a party.’ And he goes and does the same thing, and then he’s going to try to throw it back to Mac Jones. I don’t know what kind of throw that was. They say he was a quarterback. I can’t tell. I can see why he’s the wide receiver.”

Most would have expected Law’s rant to be finished after going after both Stevenson and Meyers, but he had his eye on one more player he viewed as directly responsible for the way the game ended.

And that player was Mac Jones.

After Chandler Jones picked off the lateral pass attempt from Meyers, Mac Jones had an opportunity to make a tackle in the open field, and he didn’t even come close. The lasting image of the game is the Patriots’ quarterback being stiff-armed into the dirt.

“Now, Mac Jones, let’s get on him. He must have never—I’m talking about ever, ever, ever in his life played defense,” said Law. “You know how you were born to play quarterback, and you didn’t play no other position ever, ever in football? That was Mac Jones. That’s what he looked like on that tackle right there. That was absolutely awful. It was embarrassing. I want to know if he ever even in Pop Warner played on the defensive side of the ball.”

The loss against the Raiders didn’t completely put the Patriots out of playoff contention, but it drastically lowered their odds considering their last three games are against the Cincinnati Bengals, Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills.

That’s a massive uphill battle for a good football team, which the Patriots haven’t necessarily proven themselves to be this season.

If Tom Brady breaks tablets, NFL legend believes Mac Jones should be able to dispute play-calling

Mac Jones’ fiery passion has the approval of at least one NFL legend.

New England Patriots legend and Hall of Famer Ty Law loves the fire in quarterback Mac Jones, following the team’s 27-13 win against the Arizona Cardinals.

Jones was seen barking at offensive coordinator Matt Patricia during the course of the game. Multiple camera angles showed the quarterback shouting profanities, as he was upset with the play-calling at certain points.

It was a frustrating night for the Patriots offense. Jones managed 235 yards passing and an interception. His 75.3 passer rating was his lowest since he appeared in the Chicago Bears game on October 24. Nevertheless, the combination of the running game and New England’s defense allowed the organization to pick up their seventh victory of the year.

Law appeared on The Greg Hill Show Tuesday afternoon and praised the quarterback for having a fire lit under him, as transcribed by Zack Cox of NESN.com.

“Hell no. I love it. That’s what a leader is supposed to do,” said Law. “He’s supposed to step up. I think he’s doing the right thing. No one says anything when Tom Brady’s breaking tablets. [Has] he earned the right because he’s Tom Brady? Yes, but as a quarterback you have to step up and show the team that you want it. Tell the offensive coordinator that I don?t like this call. There have been plenty of times, [co-host Jermaine Wiggins], on our end that if we didn’t like a call we’d let [Bill] Belichick know, we’d let [former defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel] know, ‘We don’t like this call!’

“As a quarterback and what they’re facing right now, they don’t have a true offensive coordinator, what is a man supposed to do? You’ve got to show that team that, ‘Look I’m the leader. Follow me. Step up.'”

The play-calling on the offensive side of the football has been a hot topic, following New England’s loss to the Buffalo Bills at the beginning of the month. The offense struggled on Monday, and Jones has made it known he has not been pleased.

New England will look to form a winning streak, as they take on the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday afternoon. This is another game with implications in the playoff race, as both teams are fighting to firmly secure themselves in it.

Patriots legend Ty Law pulls no punches in criticism of team

Ty Law did not mince words in his criticism of the Patriots.

Pressure is mounting against the New England Patriots as they face an uphill battle in the playoff picture. They have received criticism from both players and fans alike, as the  offensive struggles came to a boiling point last Thursday night.

Hall of Fame cornerback Ty Law is the latest to voice his opinion.

Law was part of the golden era of Patriots football. He finished his career with 53 interceptions, including 36 with the Patriots. His best number in a season was 10 interceptions with the New York Jets in 2005.

The corner knows a thing or two about expectations, and he is disappointed with this year’s version of the Patriots. He was also disappointed with their effort against the Buffalo Bills, as transcribed by Dakota Randall of NESN.com.

“I don’t know what team showed up for the Patriots. I know we all know what Josh Allen is; they had a chip on their shoulder; Stefon Diggs put on a clinic at wide receiver, just the routes he was running. … The secondary, they need some help. They’ve gotta step up and play better. I understand they make some plays, but they’re just not the type of team right now that you can count on — this guy or this guy — making the play and making them a better football team.

“They still have a slim chance. They gotta damn near win out to get in, but there’s still a chance. But the way the schedule is lining up, I don’t have great expectations like, ‘Oh, they could do this.’ I wouldn’t put my money on it.”

That schedule includes the likes of the Arizona Cardinals, Las Vegas Raiders, Cincinnati Bengals, Miami Dolphins, and a final matchup with the Bills at Buffalo. It will be an uphill battle for New England to say the least.

The team is struggling, and the offensive inconsistencies will need to change as they make one final playoff push.

Ty Law has a strong stance on the NFL’s new and unpopular taunting rules

“It’s just words. No matter what he said, as long as he didn’t talk about the man’s momma, it’s fair game. Let’s play.”

The New England Patriots are just one of the recent NFL teams being affected by the new taunting rules.

During the Patriots’ Week 16 matchup against the Buffalo Bills, David Andrews was flagged for taunting while defending his quarterback. Bills linebacker Matt Milano drew a penalty for a late hit on Mac Jones and Andrews immediately got in his face to protect his quarterback.

There was no taunting or bragging — just the typical offensive lineman making sure that no one touches his quarterback. The flag flies for the taunting penalty and the Patriots received no extra yardage.

Patriot legend Ty Law discussed these new rules and had a very simple take.

“I think it’s part of the game,” Law said Tuesday morning on WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show.” “It was not a good call by any means. It’s an intense game. You’re trying to get up in that guy’s head any way you can within the rules. I think that was a silly call. I think they should take that out of the game. The competition committee, they really need to look at these things because they are just words. We’re grown-ass men out there. It’s just words. No matter what he said, as long as he didn’t talk about the man’s momma, it’s fair game. Let’s play.”

The Patriots fell to the Bills and look to recover in a Week 17 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Ty Law has high expectations in Stephon Gilmore’s anticipated return

Ty Law has high expectations for Stephon Gilmore in his return

The New England Patriots will meet up with an old friend in Stephon Gilmore when the Patriots take on the Carolina Panthers Sunday.

Gilmore established his reputation as one of the best corners in the game while with the Patriots. The 2019 defensive player of the year made his mark in Foxboro, making three Pro Bowls and two First-Team All-Pro selections. Traded to the Panthers on October 6, he recorded his first interception with the organization on Sunday.

Speaking on the Greg Hill Show Tuesday, former Patriots corner Ty Law believes that Gilmore is going to come ready to play.

“I think he’s going to bring it,” Law said. “He’s going to wait for them to challenge him. I know he knows the receivers well. I know he feels that he’s superior. And he’s been waiting for this game. I talked to him; this was the target game once he got traded. This was the target game.”

Gilmore will look to stop a surging Patriots offense, as New England looks to record its second win in a row.

Former Patriots and Jets CB rips New England’s defense

New England’s defense makes former Patriots and Jets CB Ty Law sad.

Ty Law is frustrated, and New England’s defense is the reason why.

The former Patriots — and Jets — cornerback ripped into his former employer in a recent appearance on WEEI. Law specifically targeted the Pats defense following a 35-29 loss to the Cowboys.

“I’m really upset about what’s going on,” Law said. “Because you don’t let people come in there and walk all over you, throw the ball like that anytime they want to. I mean, that’s shameful.”

Law’s comments came after Cowboys QB Dak Prescott threw for 445 passing yards, the most ever against a Bill Belichick defense in a single game. Dallas punted just once in Week 6 and finished with a field goal attempt or a touchdown on its final five drives.

The Patriots offense also struggled in the game’s closing minutes — Mac Jones threw a pick-six — but Law had his sights locked on the defense.

“Defense, they have to step up,” Law said. “I don’t know what’s gonna happen in this offseason. I can tell you right now, if I had a vote, we’d be going first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth round (of the draft) — we’re getting all defensive guys and we’re gonna get some wide receivers and running backs in free agency because something’s got to give with the defense.”

Law’s comments come with his two former teams about to face off. The Patriots host the Jets in Week 7. New England handily beat New York in Week 2, winning 25-6 while picking Zach Wilson off four times. Surely that defensive performance was more to Law’s liking.

Law spent the first decade of his NFL career with New England, where he was a two-time first-team All-Pro. He was a Pro Bowler with the Jets in 2005 and returned to the organization in 2008 after two seasons in Kansas City.

Law spent the final year of his career, 2009, in Denver.

Ty Law rips Patriots defense: ‘I’m really upset about what’s going on’

“I had a vote, we’d be going (defense in) first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth round (of the NFL draft),”

The New England Patriots defense had major problems against Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott and offensive coordinator Kellen Moore on Sunday in Week 6. Dallas punted just once in the game, and finished with either a field goal attempt or a touchdown on all its final five drives.

Prescott finished with 445 passing yards, the most ever by a quarterback against a Bill Belichick defense in a single game. Former Patriots cornerback Ty Law is ringing the alarm bells. He’s worried.

“I’m really upset about what’s going on,” Law said during an appearance on WEEI, as transcribed by MassLive.com. “Because you don’t let people come in there and walk all over you, throw the ball like that anytime they want to. I mean, that’s shameful.”

New England’s offense had some issues in the closing moments of the game. Most notably, the Patriots managed to generate a missed 51-yard field goal with a 1-point lead and 2:42 left in the game. If New England got a first down, the game was essentially over. Instead, rookie quarterback Mac Jones threw a pick-six, reopening the door to a Dallas win. Still, Law saw more issues on defense than on offense.

“Defense, they have to step up,” he said. “I don’t know what’s going to happen in this offseason. I can tell you right now, if I had a vote, we’d be going (defense in) first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth round (of the NFL draft) — we’re getting all defensive guys and we’re going to get some wide receivers and running back in free agency, because something’s got to give with the defense

If was the weakest link on Sunday, it was cornerback Jalen Mills, who has been CB2 for the entire season. He allowed 5 of 7 targets for 75 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winner. He seemed likely to move into a backup role when Stephon Gilmore came back from PUP list, but the Patriots traded their star cornerback to the Carolina Panthers. It seems Mills will be a starter for the foreseeable future.

“You have to have somebody that can cover,” Law said. “I mean, we were looking for Jackson to step up. He was playing pretty good football. But I didn’t want to pass him the mantle just yet when we’re talking about him compared to Stephon Gilmore. But you have to have guys in the back that can step up and make plays.”

Ty Law reacts to claim of Patriots bugging Peyton Manning’s locker

“You know what’s even stranger about that comment is that I agree with Peyton.”

Peyton Manning had a nonchalant accusation of the New England Patriots cheating during the Monday Night Football Manning-cast.

The Hall of Famer said he was cautious in the Patriots’ locker room in case there was a hot mic around.

“Every time we played against New England, I used to go and talk to my receivers in the shower in the far corner,” Manning said. “I’m like, ‘Don’t talk about a play next to my locker. I know it’s bugged, I know it’s got a hot mic in there. It’s very strange to see seven guys hanging out back there in the shower, but we had to take all precautions.”

Ty Law heard this accusation and chimed in on it while joining WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show” on Tuesday.

“You know what’s even stranger about that comment is that I agree with Peyton: He is extremely right that it’s very strange to see seven guys in the shower talking about football,” Law said. “But you know what, he might’ve thought that because we were in his head a little bit.

“Let’s be honest, we were in his head a little bit. That’s OK. That’s Bill Belichick scheming up things and giving players confidence, so you probably did think we had a bug in there because we knew what you were doing. I ain’t gonna tell no secrets right now, but we knew what he was doing. So go ahead in the shower with all your buddies.”

That’s one way to respond to cheating accusations.

Ty Law makes a case for the Patriots to give Stephon Gilmore new deal

Ty Law wants the Patriots to gives Stephon Gilmore a new contract.

With New England Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore set to be a free agent this season, a Patriots legend is begging the team to work out a new deal for the corner. Ty Law wants New England to sign Gilmore to a new contract.

Gilmore is currently on the PUP list, as he is dealing with a quad injury. The 2017 Defensive Player of the Year has made his mark in New England. With four Pro Bowls and a Super Bowl victory under his belt, he has become a staple of the New England secondary.

Now, Law wants to see the Patriots do right by Gilmore.

“He is one of the guys that really deserves to get paid and be paid what he’s worth,” Law said on WEEI. “You can’t find guys to go out there and say, ‘OK, you got ’em.’ That is very rare.”

Law added: “How much more leverage are you going to have when you’re the (Defensive Player of the Year)? First of all, as a corner to get Defensive Player of the Year, he’s earned it. It was at the end of his first contract. So, yes, I want to get a new contract. Am I going to risk going out there not getting paid, because it’s probably going to be his last one? … This is definitely going to be his last contract.”

In addition to navigating the 2021 season with a rookie quarterback, New England may also have to navigate negotiations with Gilmore moving forward.

Patriots legend Ty Law makes bold prediction on Stephon Gilmore’s career

Ty Law has nothing but high expectations for Stephon Gilmore.

Leave it to a former New England Patriots legend to make some lofty predictions. Former Patriots quarterback tie law had some high praise for cornerback Stephon Gilmore during a recent interview with Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald.

Law had nothing but rave reviews in regards to Gilmore’s commitment and believes this will lead to future success for the corner in his career. Look no further than last season. The 2019 Defensive Player of the Year recorded 20 passes defended, leading the entire league in that category. He also finished tied for first in the league with six interceptions, and two pick-sixes to boot.

The last the cornerback to win Defensive Player of the Year honors prior to Gilmore was Charles Woodson in 2009. That is certainly not a bad name to follow up.

Gilmore also managed to guard some of the best receivers in all of football. Just on his matchup list alone were Odell Beckham Jr, DeAndre Hopkins, and Amari Cooper.

Law believes Gilmore’s body of work can translate to big things down the road. From the Herald:

“That’s what the great ones do, he is amongst the giants of the league and has a desire to be the best and stay there,” Law told Guregian in a text message. “I’m loving what he is doing and looking forward to another big year for him.”

“He’s the real deal,” Law continued. “And he still seeks advice and asks questions. He’s still eager to learn. If he keeps it up, he’ll be around a long time. One day, you’ll see him in the Patriots Hall of Fame, and the NFL Hall of Fame, as well.”

That’s certainly high praise from a Pro Football Hall of Famer.

If Gilmore continues at the trajectory he is going, he may very well end up in Canton himself.
