How to Watch Liga MX Quarterfinals, Monarcas vs. Leon & Monterrey vs. Santos Laguna Live Stream, Schedule, US TV Channel, Start Time

Watch the Liga MX Quarterfinals Live Online.

After 18 matches of the exciting regular-season action, the Apertura 2019 Liga MX championship stage is upon us with four intriguing quarterfinal matchups. The Liguilla always delivers some of the most dramatic and intense moments in Mexican soccer and this season’s playoffs should be no different.

Club Leon, who finished in second place in the regular season is in search of its third Liga MX title and first since 2014 as it takes on Morelia in its opening round matchup. One of the most in-form Mexican stars currently is Leon striker JJ Macias. The striker has emerged as a legitimate option for Tata Martino and the Mexico national team. If Leon is to make a run at a third championship, it’ll need big things from its burgeoning star. These two clubs met once in the Apertura with the match ending in a 1-1 draw.

Queretaro is looking to breakthrough among the Liga MX elite. The team is appearing in the playoffs for the first time in a year and is still in search of its first championship. Winning from the fourth seed will be no easy task. Neither will have to deal with Necaxa forward Mauro Quiroga, who was the joint top scorer in the regular season with 12 goals. If Queretaro can keep the Argentinian quiet, the team will like its chances of advancing.

Top-seeded Santos Laguna is the most decorated club in this year’s playoffs with six total titles to its name. A seventh title is within reach and would cap off a very good season for Los Guerreros. Meanwhile, Monterrey has struggled mightily this campaign after capturing the Concacaf Champions League crown earlier this year. While its regular season was disappointing, the three-time Liga MX champs clearly have the talent to knock off any team at any time.

When it comes to pedigree and experience in these types of tournaments, both Tigres and Club America are neck and neck with a combined 10 Liga MX titles. Led by stars such as Andre-Pierre Gignac and Enner Valencia, Tigres has developed a reputation as the big spending, luxury club of Mexico. Only another trophy in the team’s cabinet will suffice. On the other hand, America won this competition last season and will be desperate to defend its crown.

Napoli bested Group E rivals Liverpool earlier in this Champions League campaign, but the chances of another win over the titleholders on Wednesday look slim after a rut in form. Liverpool has gone unbeaten in 13 matches since losing 2-0 in Naples in September—still its only defeat this season—while Carlo Ancelotti’s men haven’t won a game in more than a month.

The silver lining for Napoli is that it’s lost only once in 11 games. In fact, Ancelotti has led his team to only three defeats this term. However, it’s difficult to mask the notion it appears to have lost the will to win, drawing seven of its last 10 games (including the last three in a row).

Roberto Firmino struck near full time to give the Reds a 2-1 victory away to Crystal Palace on Saturday. The same day, Napoli led AC Milan for all of five minutes at the San Siro, before conceding to see out a 1-1 draw.

It just so happens Napoli’s last win in all competitions was a 3-2 Champions League result away to Red Bull Salzburg, providing some inspiration as to what the team is capable of. The Azzurri drew 0-0 at Genk in its previous away Champions League fixture, indicative of the inconsistency posed by this Napoli team.

Jurgen Klopp’s men have proved far more reliable. Liverpool has kept an eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League and couldn’t be happier with its manager. Meanwhile, Ancelotti has been dogged by speculation over his future with Napoli currently seventh in Serie A.

An attacking drought, in particular, seems to have hampered Napoli of late. The team scored 15 goals in its first five games of the 2019-20 campaign, but there’s a sense of promise going unfulfilled after the team’s scored just 13 times in its 12 outings since then.

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah was an unused substitute against Palace and should return to the starting lineup midweek, while centre-back Joel Matip looks likely to remain sidelined. Napoli left-backs Mario Rui and Faouzi Ghoulam each missed the draw against Milan, with the former in contention to return midweek. Striker Arkadiusz Milik was absent for that clash, but is also hoping to be featured in Ancelotti’s plans on Merseyside.

A win for either team at Anfield on Wednesday will guarantee a place in the last 16, but Napoli is in need of a result with third-place Salzburg not quite out of the qualification race just yet.

The penultimate round of matches in the Champions League brings us a mouthwatering rematch in Group F as Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund renew acquaintances at the Camp Nou. Both clubs are in a good spot to qualify for the knockout rounds, but Inter Milan is lurking. A win by either side would be a huge momentum shift in the group.

Barcelona is atop La Liga with 28 points alongside bitter rivals Real Madrid. The team also comes into this matchday first in its group. That still won’t quell the panic emitting from its supporters regarding the form and style of play of the club so far this season. A slow start out of the gate without Lionel Messi put pressure on Ernesto Valverde. Since returning to full fitness, the team’s results have improved, but the performances haven’t lived up to the lofty standards it has set for itself. The dominant and attractive style has not been there. Just scraping by opponents is not good enough for Barcelona and its fans.

Dortmund has had its own struggles that have seen the team drop down to sixth in the Bundesliga. Reports coming out of Germany state that embattled manager Lucien Favre could be managing for his job in this clash with Barcelona. A loss could potentially be devastating on several fronts. Qualifying for the knockout rounds isn’t guaranteed with a big club like Inter Milan still able to catch up in the group. Failing to advance to the Round of 16 would be a catastrophic blow for a club that has a ton of talent and ambition.

Hikers take risk Grand Canyon officials warn against

Three imprudent and ill-equipped hikers were the perfect example for a warning issued by officials at Grand Canyon National Park.

Three imprudent and ill-equipped hikers were the perfect example for a warning issued by officials at Grand Canyon National Park to bring “shoe traction devices and trekking poles” because the top part of the trails are icy.

“Don’t risk it—like these folks,” the warning said in the tweet.

The warning came a day before the park’s announcement Tuesday that the National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for the area effective from Thursday afternoon through Friday night for elevations above 4,500 feet.

On the South Rim, the East Entrance Station and Desert View Drive, known as East Rim Drive, will close at 7 pm (MST) on Wednesday and remain closed until further notice, the park said.

The forecast calls for 8 to 12 inches at the South Rim and 15 to 21 inches on the North Rim, which is closed annually to vehicle traffic from Dec. 1 to May 15.

The warning tweet that included the photo of hikers, one in shorts and tennis shoes, descending an icy trail, prompted a barrage of replies, as one might expect.

“Those people are not smart.”

“Shouts to the guy in shorts and…running shoes?”

“That just looks like a verrrry bad choice.”

“They will probably need [rescuing]…going down…but tell me how the heck they are getting back up?”

“Darwin Award nominees!”

The Champions League group stage resumes on Tuesday with the top two teams in Group A facing off in a much-anticipated rematch. Early in the season, PSG embarrassed struggling Real Madrid, 3-0, at the Parc des Princes. Zinedine Zidane’s side has improved since then and will be hoping to exact some revenge at the Bernabeu in the penultimate matchday of the group stage.

Real Madrid’s form has become much better since that rough night in Paris. It’s currently level with Barcelona on 28 points atop the La Liga table. In Real’s most recent match, it scored an impressive 3-1 win over Real Sociedad with Karim Benzema, Federico Valverde and Luka Modric all finding the back of the net.

However, It’s not all smooth sailing for Los Blancos. Gareth Bale has once again caused a ruckus after being seen with a derogatory banner that showed his displeasure with the club. The already irritated fans of the club have been agitated even further following this latest incident. If Bale had any lasting support at the club, it’s gone now.

Just 14 matches into the new Ligue 1 season and PSG has already effectively ended the title race. It’s opened up a nine point lead over second-place with no real competitor for the title emerging.

As usual, the team’s primary focus will shift to the Champions League and getting over the hump in Europe’s biggest club competition. A new Neymar drama won’t help matters, though. The Brazilian superstar caused a scene this past weekend when he stormed to the dressing room instead of heading to the team’s bench after being subbed off. For as many problems as Neymar causes, there’s no doubt he can be the difference between PSG conquering Europe or crashing out.

Real Madrid has to defeat Paris Saint-Germain at home on Tuesday if it is to keep alive its hopes of finishing first in Champions League Group A. PSG dominated Real 3-0 when the teams met for a Group A matchup at the Parc des Princes in September, but Zinedine Zidane’s side will look to give a more confident account after going unbeaten in its last six games (five wins).

Jose Mourinho will make his Champions League debut as Tottenham Hotspur manager on Tuesday. He made a triumphant start to his reign in north London when his side beat derby rivals West Ham United 3-2 on Saturday. He’ll enjoy his first home match in the hot seat when the Spurs host Olympiakos, Group B’s bottom outfit.

Interim Bayern Munich manager Hansi Flick made his debut in the role during his side’s last Champions League fixture, a 2-0 win at home to Olympiakos. Flick remains in charge as things stand, and Die Roten will guarantee a top spot in Group B if it wins at Red Star Belgrade.

Manchester City can also wrap up first place in Group C, provided they secure at least one point at home to Shakhtar Donetsk, whom it defeated 3-0 in Ukraine on Matchday 1.

Wednesday features key clashes from Liverpool, last season’s Champions League winners, and a Barcelona team struggling to find its best form this term.

The Reds face a crucial clash at home to main Group E rivals Napoli, who beat them 2-0 in Italy two months ago. Victory at Anfield would guarantee first place with Carlo Ancelotti’s side sitting one point off the pace, while a draw could allow third-place Red Bull Salzburg a top-two lifeline.

Barcelona hosts Borussia Dortmund in what promises to be a tense affair, with the two Group F giants having drawn 0-0 at the Westfalenstadion in September.

Lionel Messi was again key for Ernesto Valverde’s side as it struck from a goal behind to beat Leganes 2-1 on Saturday. Dortmund rescued a 3-3 draw against Paderborn on Friday after it had trailed by three, but the Black and Yellows are now without a win in two, conceding seven times along the way.

Chelsea will go in search of revenge over Valencia on Wednesday when they travel to Spain, with Frank Lampard having suffered a miserable 1-0 home loss to Los Che in his Champions League managerial debut. The Blues sit level on seven points with Group H opponents Valencia and Ajax—who travel to Lille on Wednesday—as tensions reach their crescendo in the first round.

A painful opening weekend for Wisconsin deer hunters

Deer hunters look forward to opening day, but not everyone is suitably prepared when that day arrives, and some are downright unfortunate.

Deer hunters always look forward to opening day, but not everyone is suitably prepared when that day arrives, and some are downright unfortunate.

Wisconsin is a case in point, having inauspiciously marked the beginning of its firearm-hunting season on Saturday.

According to a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources news release, a 38-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman accidentally shot themselves in the foot in separate instances; and a 19-year-old woman was shot in the hand by another hunter who was aiming at a running deer.

The injuries were not life-threatening.

On Sunday, a 31-year-old man was shot in a case that remains under investigation because the shooter has not been identified.

The DNR’s Bureau of Law Enforcement is hoping to interview hunters who were in certain Washburn County/Minong Township locations on Sunday.

The DNR stated: “Anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, may confidentially relay their information by text, phone call or online to the WDNR Violation Tip Line:  1-800-TIP-WDNR or 1-800-847-9367.”

Wisconsin is not the only state to have its opening weekend marred by accidental shootings.

Last week in Michigan, a man accidentally shot his brother after mistaking him for a deer. The brother was flown to a nearby hospital, where he was listed in serious but stable condition.

Also during opening weekend, two young boys were injured when a weapon discharged as their father was preparing for his hunt.

Nature’s artistry revealed in stunning whale photo

A photographer in California’s Monterey Bay has captured an image showing a remarkable closeup of a humpback whale’s face and eye.

The most compelling whale images tend to show the majestic leviathans in full breach, lunge-feeding on schooling fish, or revealing their flukes.

But last Thursday a vastly different image was captured in California’s Monterey Bay by Eric Austin Yee, showing a remarkable closeup of a humpback whale’s face and eye.

Eric Austin Yee/Blue Ocean Whale Watch

“A curious humpback whale with its eye wide open doing some people watching,” Yee, who was with Blue Ocean Whale Watch, wrote for his Facebook description.

RELATED: Can you spot the hidden object in this shark photo?

Open-eye shots are difficult to capture, but what helps set this image apart are the vivid patterns and surreal facial markings.

Kate Cummings/Blue Ocean Whale Watch

“It almost looks like a watercolor,” one person commented.

The circular marks are scars left by acorn barnacles, Alisa Schulman-Janiger, a California-based whale researcher, told For The Win Outdoors.

But it doesn’t require a vivid imagination to conjure a sea jelly, or jellyfish, with its tentacles draped around the whale’s blue eye.

[protected-iframe id=”f23538443b177e22e18d84914bae6bd9-58289342-114731612″ info=”https://www.facebook.com/plugins/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fblueoceanwhalewatch%2Fvideos%2F788119608317879%2F&show_text=0&width=560″ width=”560″ height=”315″ frameborder=”0″ style=”border: none; overflow: hidden;” scrolling=”no”]

Or the billed creatures – one with what looks like a duck’s head – positioned in front of the eye.

“I think this is my favorite photo of a humpback that I have ever seen,” another commenter wrote. “Like, I want this in full print on my wall.”

Yee was working as a naturalist aboard the High Spirits, which was returning to port at Moss Landing when humpback whales were spotted.

Kate Cummings/Blue Ocean Whale Watch

“We were heading home but couldn’t resist turning around to a group of humpbacks that originally was two humpbacks, but became four,” Yee told For The Win Outdoors.

The whales swam to the boat after it had been idled, allowing Yee to capture the closeup, and Capt. Kate Cummings to capture her own images of the same whale, as well as video showing three of the whales engaged in “friendly” behavior alongside the vessel. (Images and video accompany this post.)

Cummings said the whale photographed by Yee stood out because of its extensive white markings, especially along its throat pleats.

Schulman-Janiger agreed with Cummings that they were likely part of a skin disease, but the whale seemed as playful and active and as the others and did not seem bothered by the skin condition.

Cummings posted her video to Facebook along with this description:

“Incredible experience today with friendly humpback whales! Three whales spent nearly a half hour circling and rolling around the boat and getting super close! One whale got a little too close and swiped the side of the boat with its flukes when it was twisting! For a whale, it was a gentle tap.”

Yee said he was shooting from the upper deck with an 80- to 200-millimeter lens.

Rescuer does the impossible to save big-wave surfer

The World Surf League called it “one of the craziest rescues ever seen” when a big-wave surfer was picked up just in the nick of time.

The World Surf League called it “one of the craziest rescues ever seen” when Brazilian big-wave surfer Lucas Chumbo, after exiting a big wave, was picked up by his teammate on a jetski just moments away from total disaster.

The close call occurred during a big-wave session at the famous big-wave locale of Nazaré, Portugal, last Wednesday, and it was captured in video by Pedro Miranda, who posted the footage on Friday.

Chumbo, a 24-year-old from Brazil who is one of the most prominent big-wave surfers in the world, rode a big wave and made a successful exit, leaving him in what is called the inside or the impact zone. His teammate, Ian Cosenza, had only a matter of seconds to reach Chumbo and ride to safety before a following wave of whitewater devoured them.

Amazingly, they were engulfed by whitewater but managed to ride to safety anyway.

“I’ve been filming Nazaré for many years, and during a jetski rescue there is one thing guaranteed: when the whitewater swallows a jetski, it’s game over, period,” Miranda told USA Today/For The Win Outdoors.

“Well, apparently not anymore. What Cosenza did was incredible; he stuck to it and managed to do something we all thought was impossible, especially because of all the bumps and turbulence inside the foam ball. It took a great deal of experience and for sure some luck to pull off this stunt.”

Miranda told For The Win Outdoors “the consequences could’ve been very dramatic, as both of them could be hit by the jetski and knocked unconscious right in the worst place of Praia do Norte.”

Miranda said the surfer and his rescuing teammate “are redefining the concept of extreme watermen.”

Also on FTW Outdoors: Surfer Bethany Hamilton shares powerful message

In his description with the video, Miranda explained further, saying, “Cosenza has to go full speed and needs critical control to avoid the bumps in the water that can easily flip the jetski. Given this was a high-period swell, waves are faster than usual (reaching speeds of 60 mph) and eventually the monster wall of whitewater that is chasing them, end up swallowing the jetski and both surfers.

“When something like this happens it generally doesn’t end well, but incredibly and against all odds, Ian Cosenza saved the day, successfully riding the jetski out of the whitewater and putting them both out of harm’s way.”
