Yale is coming into this game for a win, after suffering two tough losses they don’t want to go down 3 straight losses this early in the season. They will need Paul Atkinson to step up tonight and be consistent with his shooting like he has been. While Yale is averaging about 76 points per game on 42.3% shooting from the field.

Prediction: Take Siena plus the points (+6) even though Yale is at home, Siena has been firing on all cylinders lately and expect them to keep this a 3-4 point game.

The Nets won’t be at the peak of their power this season as they await the return of Kevin Durant from the injury he suffered in last year’s NBA Finals. However, the Nets will have Kyrie Irving to lead them this season after he signed as a free agent during the offseason. Irving is an artist with the basketball in his hands, but the question will be how the team’s chemistry changes with Irving now in the fold.

Also interesting will be how the young players on the Nets adjust to smaller roles after last season’s success. Players like Spencer Dinwiddie propelled the Nets for much of last season but will have to take a back seat to Irving and eventually Durant. If they can evolve into solid role players, the Nets could become championship contenders over the next couple of seasons. However, all of that starts with continued development from the young players on the roster this season.

Great white shark breach catches scientist by surprise

A Massachusetts scientist has discovered that it pays to be quick on your feet while trying to capture footage of great white sharks.

A Massachusetts marine biologist has discovered, for the second time in as many years, that it pays to be quick on your feet while trying to capture footage of great white sharks with a pole-cam.

The accompanying footage, released Tuesday by the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy, shows a 9-foot white shark breaching directly beneath Greg Skomal as he stands on the pulpit of a research vessel off Cape Cod.

Skomal jumps and shuffles his feet in a startled attempt to distance himself from the shark, which was ultimately tagged as part of an ongoing scientific effort by the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries and the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy.

The footage, captured Nov. 11, shows the primary breach from both sides of the vessel and somebody, perhaps Skomal, can be heard shouting, “Jesus Christ!”

The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy stated on Facebook:

“While encounters like this one are rare, this video shows that they can occur. White sharks are wild and unpredictable animals. This is a good reminder of the importance of following safety tips and always staying vigilant when in or on the water.”

That’s the same statement issued in June 2018, when a large white shark breached directly beneath Skomal, who exclaimed moments afterward, “Did you see that? Did you see that? It came right up and opened its mouth right at my feet!”

Skomal, who works for the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries, and fellow researchers have tagged more than 50 white sharks this season as part of a longterm behavioral study, according to the Cape Cod Times.

Trusting the process has finally paid off in Philadelphia. After a long rebuilding period, the 76ers are now legitimate contenders in the Eastern Conference. In 2018, the young Sixers emerged as a serious threat late in the season with a remarkable 16-game win streak to close out the season. While their playoff run was cut short due to a loss to the eventual NBA champion Toronto Raptors, there’s a ton of expectations and hope for 2019.

So far, so good for the Sixers. All-Star center Joel Embiid has picked up right where he left off last season. He’s averaging 22.3 points per game, while also averaging 11.8 rebounds. Couple him with offseason acquisition Al Horford, who is putting up 15.9 points and 7.4 boards per game, and they have formed one of the most formidable frontcourt tandems in the league. 

Philly isn’t just strong in the paint. In fact, the team has five players averaging double-figures in points. The Sixers also have a very solid bench to pull from in case of injury or fatigue. It’s for these reasons that many believe they’ll challenge for the top spot in the East. It won’t be easy with the likes of Milwaukee and Boston again looking strong, but there’s a ton of optimism around this talented bunch.

RJ Barrett is the latest to bear the pressure of getting the iconic Knicks brand back into the spotlight. The No. 3 overall pick out of Duke has been tapped to be the face of the franchise heading into the future. So far, early in his rookie season, it’s been an up and down project. The 19-year-old is averaging a respectable 15.8 points per game. 

Like Barrett, the Knicks as a whole have a lot of work to do to get to a level where they’re competing for a playoff spot, much less with the best teams in the Eastern Conference. There are reasons for hope in New York, even if they may seem distant. Yes, the likes of Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving passed on the chance to sign, but the addition of Julius Randle in conjunction with Barrett gives the Knicks something to build off of. Perhaps another strong draft class or two and some improved luck in the free agent market could be what gets them heading back into the direction their fans expect.

Hunters celebrate success until lawmen emerge

Hunters thought they had an easy score when coming upon a sage grouse standing alongside the gravel road they were on. They thought wrong.

Hunters in Michigan thought they had an easy score when they came upon a sage grouse standing alongside the gravel road on which they were traveling in the Upper Peninsula.

They thought wrong.

After shooting the sage grouse while inside the truck, the passenger got out of the vehicle hooting and hollering in celebration until he saw three conservation officers from the Department of Natural Resources walking toward him, as reported by MLive.com.

Turns out, the hunter shot a grouse decoy put out by the DNR officers as they patrolled Forsyth Township in Marquette County.

The two hunters were cited for possessing a loaded firearm inside a motor vehicle, not wearing hunter orange clothing and having open intoxicants.

A loaded firearm in a motor vehicle in Michigan is a misdemeanor offense carrying a fine of $50 to $500, court costs and state fees, and possibly a maximum of 90 days in jail and the loss of hunting privileges, according to Hilf & Hilf law offices. Failing to wear hunter orange is also a misdemeanor and carries the same penalties.

Found with open intoxicants in a motor vehicle in Michigan is a misdemeanor penalized by up to 90 days in jail and a fine up to $100, community service and having to undergo substance abuse screening, according to The Kronzek Firm.

The officers witnessed the unidentified hunters drive past the decoy location, stop and back up. The report stated that the two occupants were seen fumbling around before a shotgun barrel could be seen in the passenger side mirror. Then the gun was fired.

That prompted the hunters to celebrate before officers Josh Boudreaux, John Kamps and Ariel Young emerged from their hiding spot.

The shotgun was confiscated and the hunters were given their citations.

Jose Juan Macias netted twice in his competitive debut for Mexico, with the Leon star joined on the score sheet by Hirving Lozano, Hector Herrera and Uriel Antuna.

Queens Park Rangers forward Nahki Wells bagged Bermuda’s consolatory strike that day and is the only player from Kyle Lightbourne’s squad to have scored in this competition so far (three total). 

Tuesday’s visitors have a League A future to fight for approaching their final game in Group B, where Bermuda is at the bottom of the pile, but level on points with Panama. A draw or better will keep them in the top division and secure automatic qualification to the 2021 Gold Cup.

However, Mexico has won its last four games and looks to be in an unforgiving mood of late. Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Raul Jimenez returned to the XI and scored twice in Friday’s 3-0 triumph away to Panama, their third straight game netting three times or more.

Bermuda also beat Panama on its own soil, but the subsequent disappointments against Mexico (1-5) and Guatemala (0-0 friendly draw) have been less than inspiring.

More than 30 years have passed since Bermuda last defeated Mexico—a 2-1 home win in 1987 during qualification for the 1988 Summer Olympics—and the margins between the two have only expanded since.

Martino may field a slightly weakened side to rest some important stars, but Bermuda will be fighting for every inch as it seeks to preserve its place among the CONCACAF Nations League elite.

The Stars and Stripes sit three points off the top of their League A pool, but a 4-1 redemption win over Canada on Friday meant they’ll edge a tiebreaker if the two finish level.

Canada surprised the favorites, 2-0, in Toronto in October, leaving Berhalter’s men in an uncertain spot. However, Gyasi Zardes scored in the 89th minute to complete his brace in the return fixture, leaving the United States ahead 4-3 in its two fixtures against John Herdman’s side.

Cuba suffered a 7-0 hammering when it traveled to the U.S. one month ago. Weston McKennie scored a hat-trick in the first 13 minutes of that meeting, though the 21-year-old hasn’t had a direct goal contribution in 180 minutes played since then.

The Truman Bodden Sports Complex holds a maximum capacity of 3,000, and it’s very likely few of those attending in the Cayman Islands will be rooting for the guests. Berhalter recently spoke to reporters about needing to take Cuba seriously, especially when the team is on the road and the intensity is high.

The United States has only two wins in its last six games, but a run of 10 consecutive victories over Cuba suggests Tuesday’s meeting is its to lose. Cuba has lost the last three of those without managing to score—an aggregate scoreline of 15-0.

The goal is clear for Berhalter’s men: Victory will secure a spot in the Nations League semifinals in June, while a result for Cuba would see them finish second in Group A and end its run through the inaugural tournament.

Boating family in awe as whale ‘pops up’ in Avalon Harbor

A young gray whale generated lots of excitement Saturday afternoon when it surfaced inside the harbor at Avalon on Santa Catalina Island.

“Whale in the harbor… right under the boat!” exclaims Jon Quarnstrom, in the first video clip accompanying this post. “A whale… right here!”

Quarnstrom, 38, a lifelong Catalina resident, told For The Win Outdoors that he and his young sons, Gavin and Kanon, and their dog Bali were crossing the harbor in their skiff when the whale “popped up looking right at my kids.”

Bali, his tail tucked firmly between his legs, is not sure what to make of the surfacing whale.

“We see them all the time around the island during seasonal passes, but I’ve only seen this once before in the harbor,” said Quarnstrom, who works in a local steakhouse. “I was definitely shocked.”

In the second video clip, shared Monday to the Catalina Island Facebook page, viewers can hear Quarnstrom’s commentary before his skiff enters the picture.

He’s not a safe distance, having apparently become caught up in the moment, but the mammal eventually departed the harbor to continue its journey.

The whale is one of a handful of juvenile gray whales to have been spotted recently off Southern California. These early sightings are in advance of a southbound migration, from feeding areas off Alaska to breeding areas off Mexico, that peaks locally in January.

Gray whales often migrate past the so-called backside of Catalina, keeping the land to their left on the southbound journey, said whale researcher Alisa-Schulman-Janiger.

Gray whale sightings inside Avalon Harbor, on the front side facing the mainland, are extremely rare.

While sports may not be the biggest concern surrounding this friendly, it still means something. This very well may be the most high-profile soccer match ever played in this area of the world. A sell out happened soon after tickets went on sale, with over 30,000 tickets sold.
