NASCAR provides two major updates to the rulebook in 2023

NASCAR has provided two major updates to the rulebook following the race weekend at the Chicago Street Course in early July.

NASCAR has made two notable changes to the rulebook in response to the race weekend at the Chicago Street Course in early July. Overall, the sport’s first race on a street course was a success as Shane van Gisbergen won in his debut; however, the race was shortened due to darkness. This came after the race was almost postponed to Monday due to weather.

In the rulebook, NASCAR has changed the wording to indicate that races will end with a clock instead of dictating a final lap due to “unforeseen circumstances.” This means the sport could have instituted a running clock during Chicago instead of racing back to a specific lap. The rule change helps teams prepare for any unforeseen circumstance that may occur.

The other change relates to NASCAR’s testing regulations following van Gisbergen’s victory in Chicago and the addition of several other new drivers during the 2023 season. The new regulations state a driver must have two of the following to test a Cup Series car, alongside everything else that is required:

  • Championship(s) in a major series (F1, Formula E, IndyCar, WEC, IMSA, DTM, NASCAR Cup, Supercars, WRC, MotoGP, Superbike)
  • Multiple wins and podium finishes in a major series
  • Major race wins (LeMans, Bathurst, Monaco Grand Prix, Indy 500, Daytona 500, 24 Hours of Daytona, Baja 1000)
  • Significant media presence/following (racing star power)

Overall, these testing changes should help NASCAR with its new draw for international drivers as it allows them to have a better chance at testing. Meanwhile, the new procedure for ending races due to unforeseen circumstances also helps control the unpredictably and chaos seen in Chicago from a race team perspective.

Matt DiBenedetto not returning to No. 25 truck for Rackley WAR in 2024

Matt DiBenedetto announces that he will not be returning to the No. 25 truck for Rackley WAR in the NASCAR Truck Series for 2024.

[autotag]Matt DiBenedetto[/autotag] is currently in his second season with [autotag]Rackley WAR[/autotag] in the NASCAR Truck Series and it has gone well to this point. DiBenedetto won at Talladega Superspeedway last fall and has followed up his victory with a playoff berth during the 2023 NASCAR season. However, this will be the driver of the No. 25 truck’s last run with the organization.

DiBenedetto announced on Wednesday afternoon that he will not return to the No. 25 truck for Rackley WAR in 2024. In the announcement, the 32-year-old driver said this decision has come after careful consideration. Currently, DiBenedetto sits 20 points below the playoff cut-line with the last race of the Round of 10 at Kansas Speedway in two weeks.

As of right now, DiBenedetto does not have a ride for the 2024 season and is exploring options in every series. This may include a possible return to the NASCAR Cup Series if the situation is right for both sides. For now, the Rackley WAR driver will try his best to make a run at the Round of 8 in two weeks as he chases a Truck Series championship.

Ty Majeski receives big penalty following Truck Series race at Milwaukee

ThorSport Racing driver Ty Majeski received a big penalty following the NASCAR Truck Series race at the Milwaukee Mile.

[autotag]Ty Majeski[/autotag] and the No. 98 team exited inspection on Sunday morning likely knowing that something major was coming their way from NASCAR. This was due to a confiscated right rear wheel which caused the sport to eject crew chief Joe Shear, disallow Majeski’s ability to qualify, and make the No. 98 truck serve a pass-through penalty at the Milwaukee Mile. Now, another penalty has been handed down.

NASCAR announced on Tuesday evening that Majeski would be docked 75 driver points and five playoff points while the team faced a 75 owner-point deduction. Shear was also fined $25,000 and suspended for the next four Truck Series races. Majeski will still advance to the Round of 8 due to his victory at Lucas Oil Raceway.

However, the No. 98 team will not have the 75 owner and driver point penalty translate to the Round of 8. The only effect on the current playoff picture is the five playoff points taken away from Majeski. It may not be as impactful to the playoff standings but if Majeski fails to make the Championship 4, it will start to show.

ThorSport Racing could face significant penalties following Milwaukee

ThorSport Racing could face big penalties after the confiscation of a rear tire before the NASCAR Truck Series race at the Milwaukee Mile.

[autotag]ThorSport Racing[/autotag] entered Milwaukee Mile with a semi-comfortable situation due to their performances at Lucas Oil Raceway to start out the Round of 10. [autotag]Ty Majeski[/autotag] already clinched a spot in the Round of 8 after winning the event while Ben Rhodes and Matt Crafton hovered around the playoff cut-line. However, very major news hit the NASCAR world on Sunday morning.

According to NASCAR, the No. 98 truck driven by Majeski failed inspection on Sunday morning and had several consequences. NASCAR confiscated the right rear tire, ejected crew chief Joe Shear, didn’t allow Majeski to qualify, and made him perform a pass-through penalty to start the event. Any additional penalties will be announced this week.

It was a massive blow to ThorSport Racing and one that could greatly affect the No. 98 team. NASCAR could take away playoff points and cause a situation where Majeski making the Championship 4 becomes more difficult. As for the other drivers, such as Carson Hocevar, they were happy to see the news of Majeski’s inspection failure.

“The No. 98 truck (Ty Majeski) got their superpower taken away and we can all race again,” Hocevar said.

That is a major statement to make and one that will come to fruition again sometime during the week. Majeski may have made the Round of 8 but depending on what happens with the team this week, the round itself might become way more difficult than previously anticipated.

Grant Enfinger sweeps Truck race at Milwaukee, clinches spot in Round of 8

GMS Racing driver Grant Enfinger dominates the NASCAR Truck Series race at the Milwaukee Mile and clinches a spot in the Round of 8.

The NASCAR Truck Series returned to the Milwaukee Mile for the first time since the 2009 season and it put on a show. [autotag]Grant Enfinger[/autotag] dominated the event after sweeping the day for seven playoff points and the victory. This comes after GMS Racing announced it would cease operations at the conclusion of the 2023 season earlier in the week.

Enfinger joins Ty Majeski in the Round of 8 on wins while Corey Heim and Christian Eckes clinched spots on points alone. Now, there are four spots left in the Round of 8 with Ben Rhodes and Matt DiBenedetto below the playoff cut-line.

The Truck Series now goes to Kansas Speedway in two weeks for the final race of the Round of 10. It will be wild as the cut-line is tight for the remaining drivers.

Clean Harbors 175 top-10 finishing order:

  1. No. 23 Grant Enfinger
  2. No. 42 Carson Hocevar
  3. No. 19 Christian Eckes

NASCAR silly season shakes up with recent news about GMS Racing

NASCAR silly season has experienced a shake up after the news of GMS Racing closing its doors at the conclusion of the 2024 season.

The NASCAR world was shaken to its core on Wednesday morning when GMS Racing announced that it would cease operations at the conclusion of the 2023 season. Most notably, this means the NASCAR Truck Series program will no longer continue moving forward.

This stemmed from Legacy Motor Club announcing it would move to Toyota Racing in 2024 and beyond. It is a major disappointment for many within the NASCAR industry as GMS Racing has been critical in aiding their success throughout the sport. Now, the entire NASCAR silly season picture has changed in the Truck Series.

GMS Racing fields three full-time entries with Grant Enfinger, Rajah Caruth, and Daniel Dye as the drivers. All three drivers will need a new seat for the 2024 season; however, one of them has already struck a deal. According to Dye’s feed on Twitter, the current driver of the No. 43 truck has signed a full-time contract with a “top-tier” NASCAR organization.

If Dye were to stay in the Chevrolet camp, the No. 51 truck for Kyle Busch Motorsports would make the most sense. Chase Purdy will return to the No. 4 truck so there would be two full-time drivers in this scenario. Another option would be Niece Motorsports if Carson Hocevar leaves the No. 42 truck. Hocevar has been linked to rides in the NASCAR Cup and Xfinity Series.

As for Enfinger and Caruth, nothing has been said about a ride for the 2024 season at this time. Enfinger would bring a veteran presence to a race team while competing in the Truck Series playoffs every year. For Caruth, he would represent a young, talented driver who is looking to make a name for himself in NASCAR over the next few seasons.

Both drivers should be hot commodities on paper but the business side of NASCAR almost always prevails. Now, NASCAR silly season in the Truck Series has serious intrigue as the closing of a long-time organization and the futures of three drivers create many unknowns. It should be another electric cycle of moves and one that changes the landscape of the series once again.

Check out the NASCAR entry lists for the races at Daytona and Milwaukee, including notable entries in the Cup, Xfinity, and Truck Series.

NASCAR is heading to Daytona International Speedway and the Milwaukee Mile in what is expected to be a crazy weekend. The Cup and Xfinity Series will be in Daytona while the Truck Series returns to Milwaukee for the first time since the 2009 season.

In the Cup Series, the most notable entry is Riley Herbst driving the No. 36 car for Front Row Motorsports, as first reported by MotorsportsWire on X. The entry will be prepped by Stewart-Haas Racing and sponsored by Monster Energy Zero Sugar. Meanwhile, Brennan Poole will drive the No. 15 car for Rick Ware Racing, even though he is not present on the Xfinity Series entry list.

Also, Chandler Smith comes back to the Kaulig Racing program in the Cup Series after missing out on the 2023 Daytona 500. Finally, Austin Hill will pilot the No. 62 for Beard Motorsports.

As for the Xfinity Series, Ty Gibbs returns to the No. 19 car for Joe Gibbs Racing in his fourth straight race in the entry. Speaking of returns, Jordan Anderson will drive the No. 27 car for his own race ream while Natalie Decker pilots the No. 53 car for Emerling-Gase Motorsports at Daytona.

Finally, the Truck Series heads to Milwuakee with Derek Kraus behind the wheel of the No. 7 truck for Spire Motorports. There are also a few other notable entries, such as Matt Mills at Kyle Busch Motorsports and Dexter Bean at Blackjack Racing.

There are several new drivers on the entry lists for this weekend’s NASCAR races as the sport is poised for its biggest weekend of the 2023 season to this point.

Former Cup Series team returning for Truck Series race at Milwaukee

A former NASCAR Cup Series organization is returning to the sport for the NASCAR Truck Series race at the Milwaukee Mile.

A small, former NASCAR Cup Series organization is making its return to the sport in little under two weeks. According to The Racing Experts’ Colby Evans, Dexter Bean will drive the No. 21 truck for Blackjack Racing in the NASCAR Truck Series race at the Milwaukee Mile on August 27.

Blackjack Racing attempted to make the 2009 Daytona 500 with Kelly Bires driving a No. 51 Dodge entry; however, Bires did not qualify for the event. Later in the 2009 season, Bean qualified for the NASCAR Cup Series race at Pocono Raceway and finished in 36th place.

While Blackjack Racing doesn’t have much experience in the top-3 NASCAR divisions, Bean does have plenty of starts. The 36-year-old driver has competed in 30 NASCAR Xfinity Series events over 10 years. Plus, Bean made three Truck Series starts for Mario Gosselin in 2009.

Now, Bean and Blackjack Racing are set to make their return at the Milwaukee Mile as the Truck Series competes in its first race at the venue since the 2009 season.
