Following Brent Venables’ departure for Oklahoma to be the Sooners’ new head coach, The Clemson Insider reached out to a bunch of defensive prospects that Clemson has been involved with to get their reactions to the Tigers’ former defensive coordinator leaving.

Here’s what some of them had to say to TCI:

Jayden Bonsu, 2023 4-star S, Saint Peter’s Prep (Jersey City, N.J.): “My reaction is that I am not surprised. A lot of coaches have been moving around, but I wish Coach Venables the best because he made the decision which is best for him and his family.”

Troy Bowles, 2023 4-star LB, Jesuit (Tampa, Fla.): “Unexpected kind of, but I understand. I’m happy for him, he deserves it.”

Lewis Carter, 2023 4-star ATH, Tampa Catholic (Tampa, Fla.): “I kind of saw it coming so I wasn’t too much surprised, but I’m glad he got a head coach job and a new opportunity.”

Dee Crayton, 2023 4-star LB, Denmark (Alpharetta, Ga.): “I feel like he has to do what’s best for him and his fam. College football is a business. If that was the best opportunity for him, he did the right thing. I’m happy for him. I wish him the absolute best.”

Grant Godfrey, 2023 4-star LB, North Gwinnett (Suwanee, Ga.): “Absolutely crazy. I thought he was gonna be there a little longer because I’m pretty sure I saw his sons on the team.”

David Ojiegbe, 2023 4-star DL, St. John’s (Washington, D.C.): “Just a huge surprise.”

Jaeden Jackson, 3-star DL, Andalusia (Andalusia, Ala.): “My reaction is like wow and I know Coach V had been on the brink every year with schools trying to lure and pull him away from Clemson. I just hope he doesn’t change his number. But good opportunity for him.”

Moussa Kane, 3-star ATH, Blair Academy (Blairstown, N.J.): “I’m very happy for him and his opportunity. He definitely deserves it and it’s a great program and it does not affect my recruiting.”

Ben Cutter, 2023 LB, East Lincoln (Denver, N.C.): “He’s such a great coach. He deserves the position. I’m excited to see what he does with Oklahoma’s program.”

Travon West, 2023 S, Wren (Piedmont, S.C.): “It’s heartbreaking and a big hit to the Clemson team. I’m sure it was a hard decision for Coach Venables and it took a lot for him to make it. It sucks but as long as he’s doing what’s best for him and he’s happy, that’s all that matters.”

Sammy Brown, 2024 4-star LB, Jefferson (Jefferson, Ga.): “It’s obviously very saddening seeing him leave a great program but he’s going to do great. Oklahoma is going to be a great place for him and he’s gonna do amazing out there. For Clemson, they’ll be fine too. I’m very confident that Coach Swinney will get someone in there that can do the job. He’ll be able to find someone just as good as Coach Venables.”

Ahmad Moten, 2022 3-star DL, Cardinal Gibbons (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.): “Great opportunity for him.”

4-star LB ‘shocked’ by Clemson offer: ‘It just shows that their process is real’

When Dabo Swinney and Brent Venables arrived at Jesuit High School (Tampa, Fla.) on Thursday, it was because they were visiting a Clemson three-star linebacker commit in Wade Woodaz.

Or at least that’s what Troy Bowles thought.

After Clemson’s head coach and defensive coordinator/linebackers coach had left for the afternoon, that’s when the four-star linebacker prospect was informed by his head coach that Clemson had offered him a scholarship.

His reaction?

“I don’t even know,” Bowles told The Clemson Insider. “I was shocked because I had went up there during the summer for the [Dabo Swinney] Camp and they said they would keep in touch. I was shocked though.”

Clemson kept that promise and Bowles had been hearing from Venables weekly since Sept. 1.

“It means a lot because there’s a lot of coaches that will be like ‘We’ll keep in touch,’ and you never hear from them again,” Bowles said regarding his Clemson offer. “It just shows that their process is real.”

Bowles, who describes himself as “versatile and fun to watch,” is a fan of Clemson’s defensive scheme and how the Tigers utilize their linebackers.

“They have them do a lot of different things,” he said. “Coach Venables was talking to me about it when I was up there this summer.

It should come as no surprise to anyone who follows the NFL, but Bowles likes to model his game after that of a couple of linebackers who he happens to know personally, Lavonte David and Devin White.

His father, of course, is former New York Jets head coach and current Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive coordinator, Todd Bowles.

Todd takes a hands-off approach to his son’s recruitment as he looks for him to forge his own path.

“He wants me to feel everything out for myself, but he always tells me to keep an open mind to everything,” Troy said.

In terms of game day experiences, Troy was able to visit Ohio State, Georgia,   Florida and Rutgers — his brother, Todd Bowles, Jr. plays for the Scarlet Knights.

He’s planning on making a return trip to The Valley for the first time since this past summer, but that’ll have to wait until the new year.

For now, Troy’s connection to Clemson is through Woodaz. While he’s only been committed to Clemson for a week, he’s already recruiting his high school teammate to follow him to Tiger Town.

“He told me [Thursday] he’s gonna recruit me even harder because I got the offer now,” Troy said. “[Our] relationship is close. We both started at Jesuit the same year. We’ve kind of been through the experience together, to be honest.”

As far as his recruitment is concerned, Troy is hoping to be committed before the start of his senior campaign. He currently ranks as high as the No. 38 overall prospect in the 2023 class by 247Sports, which considers him the No. 2 linebacker in the country for his class.

It will be a little over a month before Michigan State football goes head-to-head with Ohio State, but it looks like they might start a little competition with their Big Ten rival ahead of time, but on the recruiting front. On Monday, the Spartans offered 2023 4-star linebacker Troy Bowles, who is currently projected to commit to the Buckeyes.

Bowles is the No. 1 ranked linebacker in his class by 247Sports and their No. 31 ranked player overall. He is from Tampa, Florida where he plays for Jesuit High School.

If Mel Tucker is able to pull him away from the Buckeyes, it would be a MAJOR coup for the Spartans.

It is a big weekend for Rutgers football ahead of Saturday’s game against No. 11 Ohio State. For 3-1 Rutgers, it is the chance to make a national statement on the field. It is also the chance to make inroads in terms of recruiting off the field.

Roughly three dozen recruits and commits are expected at Saturday’s game at SHI Stadium. It is an opportunity for Rutgers to make an impression and continue the very solid work from the past two years in terms of landing recruits and continuing to upgrade the quality of athletes being brought in by the Scarlet Knights.

Four-star linebacker Anthony Johnson, a Rutgers verbal since the spring, will be at the game. So too will two Florida four-star players: linebacker Troy Bowles and wide receiver Santana Flemming. All three players also hold Ohio State offers.

A strong showing against the reigning Big Ten champions would be impressive and help Rutgers start their 2023 class on solid footing.

Here are the players confirmed to be in attendance on Saturday afternoon. Players in italics are current verbal commits. An asterisk denotes a player who also holds an Ohio State offer.

The players are listed in alphabetical order and include position, high school, and graduation class in parentheses:
