LSU commit Trey’Dez Green aims to help Tigers lock down Louisiana

Trey’Dez Green is putting the pressure on his Louisiana cohort this summer.

Of the top 10 players in the state of Louisiana in the 2024 recruiting class, seven are committed to LSU.

That’s a good start for coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag], who has made in-state recruiting a priority since arriving in Baton Rouge. But the situation could get even better for the Tigers.

[autotag]Trey’Dez Green[/autotag], a tight end commit who ranks as the No. 2 player in the state, is focused on helping LSU lock down the boot. A two-sport athlete who also has an offer from the Tigers to play basketball, Green is putting the pressure on his Louisiana cohorts this summer.

“I wanted to be (one of the first recruits) in the 2024 class to say ‘let’s put a stop to going out of state and let’s stay home and put on for our people,’” Green said, according to On3.

The 6-foot-7 prospect has been committed since April, and as the No. 60 recruit nationally in the 247Sports composite, he’s the highest-ranked commit in LSU’s class.

LSU is in the mix for the top player in the state, five-star defensive lineman [autotag]Dominick McKinley[/autotag]. The Tigers are also the favorite to land the state’s No. 4 prospect, linebacker [autotag]Tylen Singleton[/autotag].

Is LSU’s lack of top-200 recruits a problem?

Is LSU’s lack of elite recruiting at the top in 2024 a concern?

[autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] is off to a good start in the class of 2024.

LSU’s already locked down several of Louisiana’s top recruits along with some national guys for a total of 17 commits. It’s a strong class that’s already addressed a few of LSU’s needs.

Right now, the top rated commit is tight end [autotag]Trey’Dez Green[/autotag]. He’s a four-star and consensus top 10 at his position. But he’s the only LSU commit to rank in the top 200 of the 247Sports composite rankings.

Georgia’s class has 14 of those guys. [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag], who has Florida trending up, has eight top 200 commits. Ohio State has nine and Michigan with six.

Despite having a top 10 class, LSU ranks 17th in average recruit rating.

As it stands right now, LSU’s 2024 class isn’t equipped to compete with the programs it hopes to compete with. It’s only June, so there’s no reason for any panic yet, but this is something to watch moving forward.

Some schools already have their two or three five-stars set. LSU doesn’t, which means the pressure is on to land the bigger fish down the stretch.

The good news is plenty of targets are still out there.

Most notably defensive linemen [autotag]Dominick McKinley[/autotag]. He’s the best recruit in Louisiana and LSU needs defensive tackles in its next class after falling short in that area last year.

With the likely departures of [autotag]Maason Smith[/autotag] and [autotag]Mekhi Wingo,[/autotag] that position needs a reload.

Another top 100 recruit LSU is well positioned with is corner [autotag]Wardell Mack[/autotag]. He’s another Louisiana guy, also at a position of need.

Outside of those two, On3’s Prediction Machine doesn’t favor LSU to land any other top 100 guys. LSU’s in the mix with running back [autotag]Caden Durham[/autotag] and EDGE [autotag]Colin Simmons[/autotag], but is by no measure the favorite with either.

There are plenty of guys in the 100-200 range that LSU’s after. The Tigers are sure to land a few there, but it still won’t put the top of LSU’s class up there with Georgia’s.

LSU’s 2024 class will be one of the nation’s best because of how well Kelly has recruited Louisiana this year. Almost every top player in the state will head to Baton Rouge.

But there needs to be some progress made with national five-stars if LSU wants to keep up with the playoff contenders every year. And that is the expectation at LSU.

4-star 2024 tight end decommits from LSU

Tayvion Galloway had been committed to the Tigers since July 23.

Tight end [autotag]Tayvion Galloway[/autotag] became one of the first players to join LSU’s 2024 recruiting class last summer, and now he’s the first player to leave the class.

The four-star Chillicothe, Ohio, prospect decommitted from the Tigers on Sunday night. The No. 247 player nationally and No. 11 tight end according to 247Sports’ composite rankings, Galloway had been committed to LSU since July 23. He announced his decommitment via his Twitter account

“After reconsideration, I have decided to take a step back and de-commit from LSU,” Galloway said in his post. “My recruitment is now open. Please respect my decision and no interviews at this time.”

LSU signed three tight end prospects in the 2023 class in [autotag]Mac Markway[/autotag], [autotag]Jackson McGohan[/autotag] and [autotag]Ka’Morreun Pimpton[/autotag], and it still has a top-100 tight end committed in 2024 in [autotag]Trey’Dez Green[/autotag].

The Tigers also return true sophomore [autotag]Mason Taylor[/autotag], who had a breakout season in 2022.

Even with Galloway’s decommitment, LSU still has 15 commitments in the class of 2024, which ranks seventh nationally per 247Sports.

Where LSU stands in the 247Sports composite recruiting rankings for 2024 in early May

The Tigers added three new recruits to their 2024 class in the month of April.

It didn’t take long for [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] to get the recruiting at LSU back to a good spot.

He signed a strong transition class in 2022 and hauled in a top-10 group in the 2023 cycle. We’ve still got a lot of time between now and early signing day for the 2024 class, but Kelly is off to an excellent start with what could be his best class yet.

He’s already got a quarterback committed in [autotag]Colin Hurley[/autotag], and the Tigers added three new commits during the month of April: Kicker [autotag]Aeron Burrell[/autotag] (who ranks as the No. 1 kicker in America), safety [autotag]DaShawn McBryde[/autotag] and tight end [autotag]Trey’Dez Green[/autotag].

As the calendar turns to May and we inch ever closer to the start of football season, here’s how the top 25 in the 247Sports composite recruiting rankings currently look.

2024 4-Star TE Trey’Dez Green chooses LSU over Alabama

2024 tight end Trey’Dez Green committed to LSU, but Alabama is expected to continue recruiting him.

Tight end Trey’Dez Green of the 2024 class recently revealed his top-five schools, which Alabama made. However, he chose a different SEC program.

The Louisiana native stars in both football and basketball at East Feliciana High School. As a junior, he performed well on the gridiron. Green hauled in 42 receptions for 864 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns. His basketball stats are currently unavailable.

Green recently spoke with On3’s Sam Spiegelman about the Tide and why they were listed as a finalist.

“I know Alabama is a great university that’s shown a lot of love to me,” Green said. “They’ve shared many insights about the university as well as a lot about the rise of their basketball program.”

According to On3’s RPM, he was heavily favored to land at LSU at 99.4% likelihood. I would expect the Alabama coaching staff to continue to pursue Green even after his commitment to the Tigers.

NEW: 4-star TE Trey’Dez Green commits to LSU

The Tigers picked up their highest-rated commitment so far in the 2024 cycle on Wednesday.

LSU has the makings of a phenomenal tight end class in 2024.

On Wednesday, the Tigers secured the commitment of Jackson (La.) East Feliciana prospect [autotag]Trey’Dez Green[/autotag]. A four-star recruit who ranks as the No. 52 player nationally per On3, Green is the second-best prospect in the state of Louisiana in the cycle.

He chose the Tigers over Alabama, Tennessee, Texas A&M and Miami.

Listed at 6-foot-6.5 or 6-foot-5.5 depending on the recruiting service, Green is mainly considered a tight end though some sites list him as a receiver. He’s also a two-sport athlete and standout basketball prospect who plays power forward, and based on his announcement, it appears he intends to play both in college.

His addition gives LSU 14 commitments in a class that ranks in the top five nationally, per the 247Sports composite rankings.

With Green’s commitment, LSU holds pledges from three of the top 10 prospects in the state of Louisiana in 2024, and the Tigers hold Crystal Ball projections for two more in linebacker [autotag]Tylen Singleton[/autotag] and cornerbacks [autotag]Wardell Mack[/autotag] and [autotag]Ju’Juan Johnson[/autotag].

Nation’s No. 3 tight end includes Tennessee as top-five school, sets commitment date

The nation’s No. 3 tight end includes Tennessee as a top-five school and sets commitment date.

Four-star tight end Trey’Dez Green announced his top-five schools.

Tennessee, LSU, Miami, Texas A&M and Alabama are Green’s top-five schools.

The 6-foot-5.5, 225-pound tight end is from East Feliciana High School in Jackson, Louisiana.

Green is the No. 59 overall prospect in the class of 2024. He ranks as the No. 3 tight end and No. 2 player in Louisiana, according to the On3 Sports industry rankings.

As a junior in 2022, Green finished the season with 864 receiving yards and 14 receiving touchdowns. He earned LFCA 2A All-State honors and was named a preseason MaxPreps Junior All-American entering the season.

Here’s where every recruiting service ranks LSU following latest addition

The Tigers added their 13th commit over the weekend in safety Dashawn McBryde.

LSU’s 2024 class grew on Saturday with the addition of four-star defensive back [autotag]Dashawn McBryde[/autotag].

McBryde, one of the top in-state prospects, is the 15th-best safety in the class according to 247Sports.

Despite being a safety, it was quarterbacks coach [autotag]Joe Sloan[/autotag] who played a big role in his recruitment. Sloan, who has coached in the state for a decade now, saw his Louisiana connections pay off with the Denham Springs prospect.

McBryde is the 13th commit of LSU’s 2024 class.

With spring ball over, recruiting is about to heat up. The summer is when a lot of dominos fall with some prospects looking to make a commitment before their senior year of high school.

Let’s look at where LSU stands in the latest recruiting rankings now.

LSU makes the cut for TE Trey’Dez Green’s top 5

Four of the five finalists for the dual-sport star are in the SEC.

The nation’s No. 3 tight end, [autotag]Trey’Dez Green[/autotag], has included LSU in his final five schools. His commitment date has been set for this Wednesday, April 26th.

The 6-foot-6, 225 tight end is one of the best pass catchers in the country. Per On3, Alabama, Tennessee, Texas A&M and Miami round out his top five.  With four of his top five schools residing in the SEC, I would be surprised to see him land in the ACC at Miami.

With his physically dominant frame, fans can expect a player who can go up and grab a ball in traffic and overwhelm defensive backs. The offensive scheme should include plays designed specifically for him, intended to create mismatches with smaller corners.

LSU has plenty of hooks in the water and should expect a highly-ranked final recruiting class for this upcoming year.

LSU in 4-star tight end’s top 12

LSU made the cut for Caleb Odom

Four-star tight end [autotag]Caleb Odom[/autotag] revealed his top 12 schools, and LSU made the cut.

Odom, a Georgia native, is the eighth-best tight end in the class according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

Brian Kelly’s staff has put a lot of effort into tight end recruiting since arriving in Baton Rouge. [autotag]Mason Taylor[/autotag] was a standout freshman last fall and LSU signed three tight ends in the 2023 class. In 2024, LSU already has a commitment from four-star [autotag]Tayvion Galloway[/autotag] and is trending in the right direction with [autotag]Trey’Dez Green[/autotag].

According to On3’s Prediction Machine, Ole Miss in the driver’s seat with Odom. Behind Ole Miss, On3 gives Penn State and Tennessee the next best shot.

It’d be a surprise if he were to eventually end up at LSU, but the Tigers are in a good position with their tight end group, especially if it can close the deal on Green’s recruitment.
