Which of LSU’s young tight ends will emerge behind Mason Taylor?

Which tight end will emerge behind Mason Taylor as LSU’s No. 2?

Big things are expected from LSU tight end [autotag]Mason Taylor[/autotag] in 2024. He burst on the scene with a strong showing as a true freshman in 2022 and followed it up with 36 catches for 348 yards in 2023, despite the bulk of the targets going to [autotag]Malik Nabers[/autotag] and [autotag]Brian Thomas Jr.[/autotag]

Taylor has proven himself as a blocker too. He’s the SEC’s only returning tight end to post a run block over 70 last year. His blend of skills at tight end is hard to find and it earned him preseason second-team All-SEC at media days earlier this month.

But LSU has a group of young tight ends behind Taylor. For this offense to go where it wants to go, at least one needs to emerge in 2024.

The safest pick is [autotag]Mac Markway[/autotag]. According to ESPN, Markway was the No. 3 tight end in the 2023 class. He played 160 snaps as a true freshman last year and got the start against Mississippi State. He was targeted just four times over the course of the season, catching three passes for 16 yards and a touchdown.

But according to PFF, Markway struggled when it came to blocking. Markway posted a run block grade of just 46.2, ranking 27th out of the 33 SEC TEs with 100 or more run block snaps.

Markway’s development was slowed late in his high school career after an injury ended his senior season. Now, with another year in LSU’s system and a new tight ends coach in Slade Nagle, Markway could turn a corner.

The first thing 247Sports mentioned in Markway’s original high school scouting report was his ability to block. I’d bet on Markway taking a step forward in that department this year. If so, Markway can be a valuable piece when LSU runs out of 22 personnel.

After Markway, you have [autotag]Ka’Morreun Pimpton[/autotag] and [autotag]Trey’Dez Green[/autotag]. Strictly speaking from a talent perspective, Pimpton and Green have the highest ceilings of the entire group.

Pimpton was a late addition to LSU’s 2023 class, flipping from Vanderbilt on signing day. 247Sports and On3 both ranked him as a top-six tight end in the class.

Like Markway, he didn’t factor into the receiving game last year and struggled as a blocker. If Pimpton is the athlete he was projected to be, there’s a chance he can emerge as LSU’s No. 2 TE.

This is an offense that wants to spread the field. A TE athletic enough to threaten defenses in all areas of the field will find their way into the rotation.

But Green might fit that billing better than anyone. Green was the top TE in the 2024 recruiting class. He’s young, but Kelly has shown a tendency to play young TEs while in Baton Rouge.

Green is nearly 6-7 and was a star on the basketball court too. He has the ability to win on the outside and fight for jump balls at the point of attack. Not many TEs can do that.

Again, the report here was the blocking needs to get to an SEC level. Green won’t be out there unless he can handle SEC defenders on a week-to-week basis.

Kelly’s programs have a history of producing tight ends. Michael Mayer, Tyler Eifert, Tommy Tremble, Kyle Rudolph and Troy Niklas all went to play NFL football after playing for Kelly at Notre Dame. At Cincinnati, Kelly had a player named Travis Kelce, who you may have heard of.

Taylor was banged up throughout the season last year and there’s no guarantee he’ll stay healthy throughout 2024. LSU has plenty of talented options behind him, but Kelly and tight ends coach [autotag]Slade Nagle[/autotag] would like to see that talent realized.

LSU football’s star signee Trey’Dez Green set to play basketball for Tigers

LSU’s five-star tight end will also play basketball for coach Matt McMahon.

LSU basketball announced its official 2024-25 roster on Tuesday afternoon, and with the announcement came the news that five-star LSU tight end [autotag]Trey’Dez Green[/autotag] will take his talents to the court, too.

Green was one of the top recruits in LSU football’s 2024 class. According to the On3 industry rankings, he was a five-star while earning the top ranking at his position.

All four major recruiting services ranked Green as the No. 2 player in Louisiana, just behind his current LSU teammate [autotag]Dominick McKinley[/autotag].

If you’ve seen Green’s football highlights, the fact that he’s a basketball standout too comes as no surprise. He’s listed at 6-7 and 237 pounds and showed some of the best jump ball skills in his class. That’s the type of talent and ability that translates to the basketball court.

Green was a star on the AAU circuit in Louisiana, playing for the Broncos Basketball Club in Zachary, LA. According to On3, Green averaged 27 points and 11 rebounds during his junior basketball campaign.

Green, who wears No. 14 on the football field, will don the No. 8 jersey for the basketball program.

LSU’s tight end room is crowded with the return of [autotag]Mason Taylor[/autotag], but with some development as a blocker, Green could factor into the rotation as soon as this fall.

LSU tight end Connor Gilbreath enters transfer portal

Connor Gilbreath appeared in 13 games for the Tigers last fall, but he did not make any receptions.

For the 2023 recruiting class last season, [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] and his recruiting staff picked up a commitment from a big tight end out of Butte College by the name of [autotag]Connor Gilbreath[/autotag].

Gilbreath is a 6-foot-5, 265-pound tight end who came to LSU with the tools to have a lot of playing time. He got exactly what he wished for as he appeared in 13 games for the Tigers last fall but he did not make any receptions. He was mainly used in short-yardage blocking situations.

Now, Gilbreath has decided to move on to greener pastures.

He has entered his name into the transfer portal for 2024. LSU has a few good tight ends still on the team starting with [autotag]Mason Taylor[/autotag] who served as a hero in LSU’s win over Alabama two years ago. [autotag]Mac Markway[/autotag], [autotag]Ka’Morreun Pimpton[/autotag], and [autotag]Trey’Dez Green[/autotag] could all see significant playing time this fall for the Tigers.

LSU signee Trey’Dez Green finishes as No. 2 tight end in final On3 rankings

Trey’Dez Green could be the next great LSU tight end.

LSU landed a lot of talented players in the 2024 cycle, but not many have the chance to be as impactful a player as tight end [autotag]Trey’Dez Green[/autotag].

One of the best overall signees in the class for the Tigers, Green ranks as the No. 31 player nationally in On3’s industry rankings and the No. 1 tight end in the nation.

In On3’s own rankings, he isn’t far behind. He ranks 32nd overall, though he ranks as the No. 2 tight end in the class behind Alabama signee Caleb Odom, who sits just two spots higher in the overall rankings.

Here’s the overall scouting breakdown on Green, who stands at 6-foot-6.5 and 230 pounds.

“High flying tight end prospect who plays above the rim on the football field as well as the basketball court. Highly rated basketball player who has serious bounce on the hardwood. 50-50 balls are closer to 70-30 for him with his ability to high point the football. Has rare body control and balance for someone his age with his size. Will have some growing pains as a blocker, but his ability to move and go up and get the football with his size is rare for the position. Arguably the top pass-catching mismatch in the 2024 cycle.”

As On3 notes, Green also demonstrates his athletic ability as a high school basketball player.

The Tigers have seen a lot of success from tight end [autotag]Mason Taylor[/autotag] under coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag], and Green has the potential to be the next great player at the position for the Tigers.

LSU finishes with a top-three class in 2024 according to On3

Despite a slow start, LSU ultimately finished with one of the best classes in America.

While it looked like the Tigers may struggle to land a top 10 class in the 2024 cycle, coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] and the staff closed things out nicely.

Some moves late in the cycle, including some Texas A&M flips headlined by five-star defensive lineman [autotag]Dominick McKinley[/autotag], changed the class’ trajectory. Now, as things are set to wrap up next week, On3 has released its final recruiting rankings.

That included a boost for tight end signee [autotag]Trey’Dez Green[/autotag], who became a five-star recruit, and that gave LSU the No. 3 class in 2024, according to On3. The On3 industry rankings are currently not as high as the site’s own rankings, putting the Tigers at seventh.

LSU’s class currently sits behind just Georgia and Alabama.

LSU signee Trey’Dez Green finishes as five-star in final On3 rankings

An LSU signee picked up his fifth star this week.

An LSU signee picked up his fifth star this week per On3’s updated rankings.

The recruiting service released its final prospect ratings for the 2024 class, going from 21 five-stars to 32. LSU’s [autotag]Trey’Dez Green[/autotag] was one of the beneficiaries, now ranking 32nd overall with five stars.

Green had always been one of the top-ranked tight ends, but a five-star rating was elusive as he hovered around the 35-45 overall range. Now, he has it.

On3 is the only service to give Green five stars, but he is a consensus blue-chip recruit and top 100 across the board.

According to On3’s Charles Powers, “Green will have some growing pains as a blocker, but his ability to move and go up and get the football with his size is rare for the position.

Green continues LSU’s run of success recruiting tight ends. Two years ago, LSU added [autotag]Mason Taylor[/autotag]. Last year, the Tigers signed [autotag]Mac Markway[/autotag] and [autotag]Ka’Morreun Pimpton[/autotag].

With Taylor, Markway and Pimpton set to return, along with the addition of Green, LSU’s tight end room is prepared to take center stage this fall.

LSU signee pushing for top tight end spot in 2024 class at All-American Bowl

Trey’Dez Green could be the consensus No. 1 tight end by the end of the week.

The nation’s top high school talent has arrived in San Antonio for the All-American Bowl, which will take place on Saturday.

LSU has a few commits in attendance, including tight end [autotag]Trey’Dez Green[/autotag], one of the top tight end prospects in the entire nation and the No. 2 player in the state of Louisiana behind defensive lineman [autotag]Dominick McKinley[/autotag], who flipped to the Tigers from Texas A&M on Sunday night.

Some services rank Green as the No. 1 tight end in the 2024 cycle, though On3’s rankings currently have Alabama signee Caleb Odom in that spot. The battle for the top tight end spot is one On3 highlighted ahead of the All-American game.

Two of On3’s top three tight end prospects are set to be at the All-American Bowl with LSU signee Trey’Dez Green (No. 36) and Penn State signee Luke Reynolds (No. 39) making their way to San Antonio. The battle for the nation’s top tight end is one of the more interesting rankings questions. Could Green or Reynolds challenge Alabama signee Caleb Odom as the No. 1 tight end? A converted basketball player with a 6-foot-6.5, 230 pound frame and high-end play speed, Green is one of the bigger mismatches in the 2024 cycle. Reynolds has a prototypical skill set for the position as a top athlete who can change directions within his routes and has a grittiness to his game.

The All-American Bowl will be held at the Alamodome on Saturday and will be televised on NBC.

Who was the most important player in LSU’s 2024 signing class?

The Tigers addressed the secondary on early signing day after struggles in 2023.

The 2024 early signing period is in the books, and while LSU may not be completely done adding players, all 28 committed players have signed their national letters of intent.

It’s not an elite class, but it’s certainly a very solid one that ranks either just inside or outside of the top 10, depending on the recruiting service. It addressed several key areas of need, including the secondary, which struggled quite a bit in 2023.

The headliner in that group was four-star safety [autotag]Dashawn McBryde[/autotag], who ESPN listed as the most important addition in the 2024 signing class. McBryde is the No. 2-ranked player in LSU’s class behind tight end [autotag]Trey’Dez Green[/autotag].

The Tigers have been looking for help in the secondary the past two seasons, and while they have added some playmakers in the portal, including Texas A&M safety Jardin Gilbert, McBryde is still a valuable addition. LSU ranked 104 among all FBS teams in passing yards allowed per game this past season, giving up 245.4 yards through the air. McBryde will give the coaches long-term help in fixing that problem, whether it’s this coming season or the next.

The Tigers’ class was also headlined by four-star quarterback [autotag]Colin Hurley[/autotag] and four-star offensive tackle [autotag]Weston Davis[/autotag].

LSU lands top tight end in 2024 recruiting class according to On3

Trey’Dez Green joins a tight-end room at LSU that has some very talented players.

On3 recently released a list of the top 10 tight ends in the 2024 recruiting class and the schools that they committed to. [autotag]Trey’Dez Green[/autotag] was the No. 1 tight end on the list and thankfully, he signed with the LSU Tigers.

Green is a 6-foot-7, 225-pound, four-star tight end who is ranked as the No. 1 tight end in the country by Rivals and by the 247Sports Composite ratings. He is ranked as a top 100 overall player on every recruiting site. He is as high as the No. 36 overall player by On3.

Green joins a tight-end room at LSU that has some very talented players. [autotag]Mac Markway[/autotag], [autotag]Mason Taylor[/autotag], [autotag]Ka’Morreun Pimpton[/autotag], [autotag]Jackson McGohan[/autotag], and [autotag]Connor Gilbreath[/autotag] are all guys who could see playing time and make a big impact in the passing and running game for the Tigers in 2024.

Adding Green to that squad makes the LSU tight end room one of the best rooms in the NCAA.

Where does LSU’s 2024 recruiting class rank on the eve of early signing period?

There is just one more day until early signing day is here, and dominoes are falling all across college football.

There is just one more day until early signing period is here, and dominoes are falling all across college football.

Usually, this time of year would be reserved for the hype centered around high school recruits, but the transfer portal has taken the place of that hype. Where some of the players in the portal decide to go may dictate where some of the top class of 2024 players decide to go.

With that being said, where does the LSU 2024 recruiting class rank before early signing period? According to 247Sports, LSU’s 2024 class is ranked as the No. 12 class in the country. The class does not have any five stars and it is headlined by four-star tight end [autotag]Trey’Dez Green[/autotag] from Zachary, Louisiana.

That No. 12 overall ranking ranks as the sixth-best class in the SEC. Georgia, Alabama, Texas, Florida and Auburn are all ahead of the Tigers class and the Tennessee Volunteers are right behind LSU at 13th.
