Penn State RB Trey Potts invited to mini-camp with defending Super Bowl champs

Former Penn State and Minnesota RB Trey Potts was invited to a rookie minic-amp with the Kansas City Chiefs following the NFL draft.

The Kansas City Chiefs appear to have had their eyes on a few Penn State players during this NFL draft season. After using a fifth-round pick on center Hunter Nourzad and signing linebacker Curtis Jacobs to an undrafted free-agent contract, the Chiefs have now handed out an invitation to the team’s next mini-camp to one more Penn State player.

[autotag]Trey Potts[/autotag] has received an invite to join the Chiefs for a mini-camp as a bit of an open audition for a spot on the Chiefs roster. At the very least, getting a chance to go through a mini-camp with the Super Bowl champions should be a terrific experience for Potts and an opportunity to get some NFL feedback that will help him in the long run with the Chiefs or potentially another NFL franchise when training camps start up this summer.

Potts spent one season at Penn State after transferring from Minnesota. Potts served as a top option behind Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen. After rushing for 1,195 career yards with 11 touchdowns for Minnesota, Potts rushed for just 155 yards and 2 touchdowns in his one season with the Nittany Lions.

Penn State RB Trey Potts declares for 2024 NFL draft

Penn State running back announces his plans for 2024.

Penn State’s running game will be losing one key veteran in 2024. [autotag]Trey Potts[/autotag] who spent one season in Happy Valley, has announced he will be passing on his remaining eligibility at the college level and enter the 2024 NFL draft pool.

“I am excited to announce my decision to declare for the 2024 NFL Draft,” Potts said in a statement shared on his Instagram account on Thursday evening. “The lessons learned, the challenges overcome, and the memories created have prepared me for my next chapter.”

Potts carried the football 25 times for 155 yards with 2 touchdowns in his one season for Penn State. Potts was a third option behind the duo of Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen despite his experience as a veteran Big Ten running back.

Potts transferred to Penn State from Minnesota, where he rushed for 1,195 yards with 11 touchdowns in four seasons with the Gophers.

Potts could have returned for one more season to take advantage of a sixth year of eligibility allowed by the NCAA as a result of being impacted during the 2020 COVID-19 season.

Potts will wrap up his college football career with 1,350 yards and 13 rushing touchdowns and 114 receiving yards and 1 receiving touchdown.

Check out the best images from Penn State’s road win at Northwestern.

The game itself may not have been the prettiest of performances from the Penn State Nittany Lions, but a 41-13 win at Northwestern had plenty of terrific images from a hard-fought victory. Penn State’s second road game of the year sent Penn State to a 5-0 record overall and 3-0 in the Big Ten on what looked like a beautiful afternoon for some college football.

Penn State’s defense racked up 7 sacks against Northwestern and held the Wildcats offense to fewer than 200 yards. The Penn State offense took a while to get things going but did its part to help pull away after being tied 10-10 at halftime.

Here are some of the best images from Penn State’s latest road victory against Northwestern.

Penn State defense leads the way in 41-13 win at Northwestern

Penn State’s defense leads the way as Nittany Lions improve to 5-0 with 41-13 win at Northwestern.

Penn State improved to 5-0 on the year and 3-0 in Big Ten play with a road win at Northwestern that was, as they say, closer than the experts expected. Penn State overcame a solid fight from Northwestern on Saturday afternoon in Evanston and returned home with a 41-13 win fueled by another strong defensive showing.

Penn State’s defense turned in another fine outing for the Nittany Lions. It was the defense that bailed Penn State out right from the start of the game. After [autotag]Nick Singleton[/autotag] fumbled the opening kickoff away to the Wildcats, the defense came on the field, drive the Northwestern offense a couple of yards, and forced the home team to settle for a field goal. While it was the first deficit of the season for Penn State, the defense answered the call.

Northwestern quarterback Ben Bryant was knocked out of the game following a sack by [autotag]Zane Durant[/autotag] on a third down deep in Penn State territory in the fourth quarter. The sack by Durant knocked Northwestern out of position to consider going for a touchdown and forced the Wildcats to settle for a field goal. But any threat of a comeback by Northwestern for a second week in a row may have been put to rest with the loss of Bryant for the remainder of the game.

Penn State’s defense racked up a total of 7 sacks for a loss of 47 yards for the Northwestern offense.

[autotag]Drew Allar[/autotag] had a tough outing, similar to his last road test at Illinois two weeks ago. Allar did not turn the football over and he did pass for 152 yards and a touchdown, but the passing game was out of sync for the majority of the afternoon. Singleton led the team with 5 receptions and [autotag]KeAndre Lambert-Smith[/autotag] had 3 catches despite being targeted 7 times by Allar.

Penn State also dealt with some injury concerns during the game. [autotag]Kaytron Allen[/autotag] left the game in the first half and did not return to the field. [autotag]Trey Potts[/autotag], who scored a game-tying touchdown in the second quarter stepped up to help the running game alongside Singleton.

Penn State will get next week off before returning to action in Week 7. Penn State will host UMass at that time for the final non-conference game of the year in the regular season. A massive road trip to Ohio State is on deck after the home game with the Minutemen.

Trey Potts relieves social media with game-tying TD vs. Northwestern

This Trey Potts touchdown calmed some nerves for Penn State Twitter, at least for the moment.

The first half of football in the early afternoon window has been anything but pretty for the Penn State offense. Down 10-3 against Northwestern, the Nittany Lions did manage to climb out of the hole and tie things up at 10-10 before going to halftime. But Penn State has had to fight for every yard and every point in a disappointing showing by the offense early on.

Trey Potts came in to provide a bit of a spark for the Penn State offense after Kaytron Allen got a little banged up on a second-quarter drive. Potts got into the endzone for the first Penn State touchdown of the game to tie the game up.

Potts took a handoff from [autotag]Drew Allar[/autotag] worked his way out of traffic around the right side of the offensive line and ran into the endzone for the score. For the moment, it was a slight bit of relief for Penn State fans on social media, which had spent much of the first half ripping the Nittany Lions for sleepwalking through the first half, at least on offense.

Here’s a sampling of social media reactions to Potts’ game-tying touchdown for Penn State.

Penn State running back throws much-needed touchdown vs. Illinois

Penn State running back Trey Potts delivered on this trick play for a Penn State touchdown vs. Illinois.

This may not have been the reason why Penn State wanted to bring [autotag]Trey Potts[/autotag] into the program out of the transfer portal this past offseason, but they may be glad he did. With Penn State’s offense having some trouble establishing much of a rhythm in a defensive battle with Illinois, Potts delivered a halfback pass to tight end [autotag]Tyler Warren[/autotag] for a massive touchdown late in the third quarter.

Warren did a great job of catching the ball before stepping out of the end zone, even keeping both feet just inside the lines as he made the catch.

This appears to be the first career pass attempt by Potts, now in his fifth year of college football. Potts transferred to Penn State as a graduate transfer from Minnesota in the offseason. His first pass, and first touchdown pass, could not have come at a better time for Penn State.

The touchdown pass put Penn State up 23-7 as the Nittany Lions started to establish full control of the game. Nick Singleton rushed for a touchdown following an Illinois interception on the ensuing possession to put the Nittany Lions up 30-7 early in the fourth quarter.

2023 Penn State position previews: Running Backs

Penn State’s running back situation is very promising in 2023 with Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen leading the way.

After a few tough years without getting much consistency out of the running game, Penn State saw the light in 2022 in the form of two impressive freshmen, [autotag]Nick Singleton[/autotag] and [autotag]Kaytron Allen[/autotag]. Singleton and Allen quickly elevated their game and took control of the ground attack as the team’s leading rushers as returning players Devyn Ford and Keyvone Lee struggled to stay on the field. Both Ford and Lee have since moved on from the Nittany Lions in search of other opportunities to play while Singleton and Allen moved forward as the core of the Penn State running game.

And there is a lot to look forward to in the form of a sophomore encore from each. But Penn State also added to the running back room with help from the transfer portal and the recruiting efforts have continued to bring in talented running backs like London Montgomery and Cam Wallace in the Class of 2023.

Here is a look at Penn State’s promising running back situation heading into the 2023 season.

2023 Penn State football snapshot profile: No. 23 Trey Potts

Trey Potts may not be Penn State’s top running back in 2023, but he fills a valuable role on the roster.

Going into the 2023 football season, Nittany Lions Wire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Penn State roster. Over the preseason, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for James Franklin this season.

Up next is one of the new faces in the crowd this fall, but not one without a full dose of experience behind him. [autotag]Trey Potts[/autotag] committed to Penn State out of the transfer portal this spring and the former Minnesota running back will fill a big need on the roster and depth chart with his arrival. Here is a quick look at one of Penn State’s newer but veteran running back options on the roster this fall.

Penn State already had one of the best young running back duos the Big Ten has to offer going into the 2023 season, but the Nittany Lions added a veteran presence from the transfer portal with the addition of former Minnesota running back [autotag]Trey Potts[/autotag]. Potts committed to Penn State out of the transfer portal after four seasons with the Gophers.

Penn State has a dynamic running back combo with [autotag]Nick Singleton[/autotag] and [autotag]Kaytron Allen[/autotag], both having shined in their freshmen seasons for the Nittany Lions in 2022, but the position was lacking depth and upperclassmen leadership after Keyvone Lee opted to enter the transfer portal at the end of the bowl season. Devyn Ford had previously stepped away from football as well, leaving Penn State’s depth a bit of a concern during the spring.
