Longhorns recruit Dia Bell named Florida Gatorade Player of the Year

Over the last few months, he has shown why the future in Texas is bright

While Dia Bell is still over a year away from making his collegiate debut, he made headlines over the weekend. The talented junior who is part of the Longhorns 2026 class was named Florida’s 2024-2025 Gatorade Player of the Year on Friday. Over the last few months, he has shown why the future in Texas is bright.

During the 2024 campaign, Bell completed 71 percent of his passes for 2,597 yards. He also recorded 29 passing touchdowns and only threw six interceptions. While Bell was a human highlight reel with his arm, he also made an impact with his legs,

On the ground, he ran for 561 yards on 61 carries, averaging 8.4 yards per carry, and found the end zone five times. Due to his ability to make an impact in multiple ways, Bell was hard to plan against. That is partly why he drew the interest from the Longhorns and some of the top programs in the country.

During the recruitment process, Bell visited Ohio State, Penn State, and LSU before committing to the Longhorns on June 17th. Although the quarterback room is loaded for the foreseeable future with Arch Manning, Trey Owens, and KJ Lacey, Bell should get his opportunities.

This season, Bell has shown why he has the potential to be a special player, and his latest accolade shows why he is one of the best players in his class from Florida.

Arch Manning, Trey Owen – Texas football’s future prepare to take the helm

Arch Manning is set to lead the Texas Longhorns in 2025 as Quinn Ewers eyes the NFL Draft. Discover Manning’s journey and Trey Owens’ rise.

It’s no longer a question of if Arch Manning will take the helm for the Texas Longhorns. It’s when. A viral video from years ago captured a young Manning, proudly sporting a burnt orange Texas shirt, declaring his college choice: “Texas.” That moment came to fruition when Manning officially committed to the Longhorns in 2022.

Manning arrived at the Forty Acres with the understanding he’d play understudy to Quinn Ewers, the sophomore quarterback who has made this team his own. “This is Quinn’s team,” Manning said just weeks ago, acknowledging his current role. But as Ewers eyes the 2025 NFL Draft — where analysts project him as a first- or second-round pick — the focus inevitably shifts to what comes next.

While Ewers’ draft stock isn’t locked into a top-10 spot yet, strong performances in Texas’ remaining games could elevate his position. Even if Ewers leads Texas to an SEC Championship or the College Football Playoff, it’s unlikely he’ll return for his senior season due to the injury risks and his growing NFL potential.

Assuming Ewers departs, Manning will likely make his starting debut on August 30, 2025, in a high-stakes season opener against Ohio State at Buckeye Stadium. While a challenging atmosphere awaits, Manning’s pedigree and preparation inspire confidence. The next question: Who will step up as QB2?

The Rise of Trey Owens

When Manning secures the starting role, Trey Owens is certain to become  the team’s primary backup. The Houston native and Cy-Fair High School graduate brings an impressive résumé. A two-time all-district honoree and All-American Bowl participant, Owens tallied 6,411 passing yards and 81 touchdowns against just 11 interceptions during his high school career.

Owens’ senior season saw him complete 222 of 313 passes for 3,303 yards and 43 touchdowns, earning District 17-6A Offensive MVP honors. His leadership propelled Cy-Fair to an 11-2 record, a district title, and a playoff run. Owens is known for his consistency, poise, and ability to deliver in high-pressure moments, qualities that make him a strong candidate for QB2.

Owens did see a few snaps this year during the UTSA game at DKR. He completed for 19 yards, and completed about half of the passes he threw for. He is still worthy of a start, in the event, Arch is unavailable or needs the rest. After all, he was recruited by Sarkisian for a reason. Just check out his throws in the Spring Game:

What’s Next for Texas Football?

As the Longhorns prepare for a new era, all signs point to Arch Manning becoming the face of the program. But with Trey Owens and a deep quarterback room behind him in the next recruiting class means Texas is building a foundation for long-term success. The future is bright on the Forty Acres, and the SEC will soon see what the Longhorns are made of. It Just Means More.

Texas has one of the top quarterback rooms in the country

Where does Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning rank among the best in CFB?

When it comes to the best quarterback rooms in college football there is little doubt that the Texas Longhorns would be among them. After all, they have a former five-star signee as the starter and his backup was the No. 1 overall prospect of the 2023 recruiting class.

Even with Quinn Ewers returning to the Longhorns for the 2024 college football season, there is still a lot of buzz surrounding backup quarterback Arch Manning. The football world is ready to see the Manning family sion in action.

Behind the pair of former five-star prospects, you can add in incoming freshman quarterback Trey Owens. According to 247Sports, the Cypress product ranked No. 16 in the country as a four-star recruit.

As far as the 2025 recruiting class, head coach Steve Sarkisian has another top prospect heading to the Forty Acres. KJ Lacey of Saraland, Alabama, is the No. 11 overall quarterback according to the composite rankings from 247.

Safe to say there is plenty to be optimistic about with the Texas Longhorns and the quarterback position doesn’t appear to be a concern any time soon.

Recently, Pro Football Focus ranked the quarterback rooms with Texas checking in at No. 3 overall.

What PFF Says…

After leading the Longhorns to the College Football Playoff and their first Big 12 title since 2009, Quinn Ewers returns for his redshirt junior campaign. His 1.7% turnover-worthy play rate ranked sixth among all quarterbacks in college football this past season, while his 85.6 passing grade placed 10th among Power Five signal-callers.

Looking at Texas’ 2024 QB room and how Quinn Ewers is still the clear starter

Texas has one of the best quarterback rooms in the country.

Texas is returning a quarterback in Quinn Ewers who led the Longhorns to their first-ever College Football Playoff appearance and their first conference championship since 2009. Ewers is already a favorite to win the 2024 Heisman Trophy and will likely be one of the top quarterbacks taken in the 2025 NFL draft.

Ewers announced his return to Texas a few weeks ago due to unfinished business. Although the Longhorns finished with their best record in over a decade, winning a national championship is the ultimate goal.

Texas now enters the SEC with a strong chance to make back-to-back College Football Playoff appearances, and now they have arguably the best quarterback room in the nation.

Here is a look at who will be in the quarterback room for the Longhorns in 2024.

Cy-Fair 2024 QB Trey Owens commits to Texas

Cy-Fair (Texas) QB Trey Owens, 2024 three-star recruit commits to Texas.

Texas has put together one of the top 2023 recruiting classes in the nation, highlighted by No. 1 overall recruit, quarterback Arch Manning. Even though Manning projects to be the Longhorns’ starter for the next few years, you can never have too many options at quarterback and the hustle for the next one never stops.

On that subject, they may already have their QB for the class of 2024. Cy-Fair (Texas) QB Trey Owens announced that he’s committed to Texas.

Owens (6-foot-4, 200 pounds) is a three-star recruit who is ranked No. 34 among quarterbacks in his class and No. 69 in the state.

He told 247 Sports that he loves coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff:

“I feel like they’ve been super honest with me throughout the process. They took their time recruiting with me. I thought that was cool they were honest with me about things I needed to fix and it really pushed me because that wasn’t the offer I wanted.”

If nothing else, Owens comes equipped with a big arm.

In 11 games as a Junior, he totaled 2,840 passing yards, 34 touchdowns and just six interceptions.

Owens is the third commit for their class of 2024. The others are four-star athlete Hunter Moddon and four-star cornerback Jaden Allen.

Steve Sarkisian may be honing in on his next quarterback recruit.

Steve Sarkisian may be honing in on his next quarterback recruit. Texas is trending for 2024 three-star signal-caller Trey Owens.

The Cy-Fair High School player received multiple crystal ball projections in favor of the Longhorns on Tuesday. Owens is a rising prospect with offers from Baylor, Texas, Texas Tech and Houston.

Owens stands 6 feet, 5 inches with arm strength that projects well to the collegiate level. He is a lower-rated recruit compared to Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning, but coach Sarkisian has a proven eye for quarterback talent.

Owens enjoyed a breakout junior season where he threw 34 touchdowns to just six interceptions. He took home offensive MVP for the district and led Cy-Fair to the playoffs.

Texas offered Owens in early November, and he appears to be doing a great job in his recruitment thus far.
