Trey Murphy’s mom was the most excited to meet LeBron James even after her son’s huge game

Trey Murphy’s mom got an awesome birthday gift.

It was an extra special night in New Orleans, both for Trey Murphy and his mom.

The Pelicans overcame a 23-point deficit to defeat the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday.

Murphy, who was the No. 17 overall pick in the 2021 NBA draft, scored 21 points off the bench. He connected on four 3-pointers, which is the second-most he has made thus far in his professional career. It is the second time he has made four or more 3-pointers this month.

It was extra special because Murphy’s mother, Albeda, was celebrating her birthday. To help her celebrate, the former Virginia standout introduced her to LeBron James — who suffered an injury during the game.

The New Orleans rookie snapped a photo of the two of them together and according to Orange County Register reporter Kyle Goon, his mother even “screamed” in delight.

As awesome as it was to see her son break 20 points in an NBA game, it had to have been a “pinch me, I’m dreaming!” moment to have him be the one to connect her with LeBron. After all, he has come an incredibly long way over the past few years.

Before he transferred to Virginia, the sharpshooter played college basketball at Rice University. During his pre-draft interview with me, he told me about that long and winding journey (via HoopsHype):

In all honesty, I wasn’t underrecruited in high school. I was where I was supposed to be during the time recruiting was happening going into my senior year. I was like 6-foot-3 and maybe 150 pounds soaking wet. You can’t really say, oh yeah, he’s a high-major player. I didn’t have the body for it. That’s a super important piece of recruiting.”

Now, only in his first professional season, Murphy is already a positive-impact contributor for a team that could make the playoffs. If he has his way, that’s exactly what will happen.

After beating the Lakers, Murphy told reporters about a recent interaction with his barber.

Murphy said his barber told him he thought the Pelicans would be good “next year” and the New Orleans rookie then confidently told him that fans would not even have to wait that long.

Trey Murphy’s mom had a wholesome reaction to meeting LeBron James

Just minutes after leading the Pelicans to a key win over the Lakers, Murphy delivered yet another assist and it wasn’t to a teammate.

Just minutes after leading the New Orleans Pelicans to a key win over the Los Angeles Lakers, Trey Murphy III delivered yet another assist and it wasn’t to a teammate.

Instead, it was to his mother on her birthday.

Murphy produced 21 points and four rebounds off of the bench as the Pelicans defeated the Lakers, 116-108. The Pelicans trailed by 20 points at halftime, but Murphy scored 16 points in the third quarter to lead the comeback.

Pelicans head coach Willie Green credited Murphy for staying ready.

I just think he has been preparing for these moments. He played in some G League games (and is putting) in hard work getting into the gym and working on his craft. He has just been improving more and more as the season has progressed. We’re giving him some games where he is getting acclimated and finding out the rhythm of the NBA. We needed all of his 21 tonight.

The performance marked just the fourth time Murphy scored in double figures. It was his second-highest scoring effort of the season, trailing only his 32-point performance on March 11, and came at a critical time for New Orleans.

With the win, the Pelicans moved ahead of the Lakers to ninth place in the Western Conference with seven games left in the season. They would host L.A. if the season ended now in the play-in tournament in a win-or-go-home scenario.

While Murphy treated his mother, Albeda, to one of his finest outings of the season, the 17th pick also helped her meet LeBron James after the contest, which made for one awesome reaction.

The moment was captured by Bill Oram of The Athletic.

The moment between Albeda and James showed that basketball is more than just a sport and can have a tremendous impact off the court. It was likely even more memorable for her that Murphy helped lead the Pelicans to a key win.

Trey Murphy III sets Pelicans franchise rookie 3-point record

Murphy on Friday became the seventh rookie this season to record at least 30 points in a game.

Trey Murphy III on Friday set new career-highs in points and rebounds to lead the New Orleans Pelicans in a 142-120 loss at home to the Charlotte Hornets.

Murphy erupted for 32 points, nine rebounds and two assists in 28 minutes off of the bench. He shot 12-of-20 from the field and became the first rookie in franchise history to hit seven 3-pointers in a game, surpassing the previous record of six. He went 7-of-12 from beyond the arc.

With the performance, Murphy is just the fifth Pelicans rookie to register a 30-point game, joining Darren Collison, J.R. Smith, Marcus Thornton and Zion Williamson. He is the seventh rookie this season to record a 30-point game.

The result versus the Hornets was certainly not what the Pelicans wanted, but the outing by Murphy gave the team at least one positive to carry into its next game. Murphy entered the season known to be a knock-down shooter and the 17th pick showed just that on Friday.

Pelicans’ Trey Murphy III placed in health and safety protocol

Murphy did not play Monday during a win over the Pacers after entering the NBA’s health and safety protocol.

New Orleans Pelicans rookie Trey Murphy III did not play Monday during a win over the Indiana Pacers after entering the NBA’s health and safety protocol, the team announced.

Murphy is the lone player on the roster currently in the health and safety protocol. The team previously had several players sidelined because of the protocol, including Jonas Valanciunas, Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Naji Marshall among others.

Players and coaches entered into the health and safety protocol that are vaccinated can be cleared to return after six days, compared to the previous 10-day isolation period. Individuals can still be cleared sooner if they return two negative PCR tests at least 24 hours apart.

Murphy just returned to the Pelicans after a stint with their affiliate in the NBA G League, the Birmingham Squadron. He recorded 33 points, 11 rebounds and three assists in a win on Sunday over the Austin Spurs, his third appearance with the Squadron.

The 17th pick has played sparingly with the Pelicans, averaging 3.8 points and 2.1 rebounds in 36 games. He had not logged significant minutes with New Orleans since recording three points and one steal in 19 minutes on Dec. 28 in a win over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The omicron variant of the coronavirus swept through the NBA last month with over 200 players and at least a dozen head coaches placed into the protocol. The league and its teams and players seem to be through the worst of it with very few cases active as of Monday.

Pelicans’ Trey Murphy adjusting to teams’ scouting reports

Murphy can shoot with the best of them but knows he will have to adjust his game as teams limit his space.

New Orleans Pelicans forward Trey Murphy III can shoot with the best of them, but the rookie knows he will have to begin to adjust his game as teams work to limit his space.

Murphy drained 17 3-pointers during the preseason, which was tied with Stephen Curry for the second-most among all players. He converted on 53.1% from beyond the arc, and has carried that hot shooting into the regular season.

The 17th pick is averaging 6.2 points and 2.6 rebounds on 42.9% shooting (9-of-21) from 3-point range this season. He is hitting 1.8 3s in 22 minutes per game and has made at least two in all but one of his five games to this point.

He knows teams will be keying in on his shooting as the year progresses.

The scouting report is out. Everybody knows I can shoot the ball. I’m not getting a whole lot of clean looks anymore. I just have to find ways to get my shot off, and also use my gravity to get other people shots. If people are not helping, then there is more space on my side so anyway I can help the team that’s the best thing for me.

The Pelicans view Murphy as a key player off the bench with his ability to space the floor. His shooting can help open things up for others on the team and that will give them the ability to really expand their playbook throughout the year.

Murphy likely won’t have huge numbers on a consistent basis this season but his production off the bench will prove to be very beneficial for New Orleans.

2021 NBA draft: 10 bold predictions for incoming rookie class

Rookie Wire decided to put on our thinking caps and predict the future so we made 10 bold predictions for the 2021-22 rookie class.

The 75th anniversary season of the NBA officially tipped off on Tuesday with four of the top teams in the league taking the court to much fanfare in front of a national audience.

The league will return to some level of normalcy this season following a challenging 2020-21 campaign amidst the coronavirus pandemic. With a new season upon us, there is a new opportunity for teams and players to leave their mark in the league.

The incoming rookie class had the luxury of playing in summer league, with a full training camp and preseason schedule that should help smooth the transition to the NBA. We have already caught a glimpse of what the group has to offer in the preseason alone.

Rookie Wire decided to put on our thinking caps and predict the future. We made 10 bold predictions for the rookie class and offered an opinion on what we might see. To make this exercise fun, we will come back at the end of the season and see how we did.

Here is how we fared last season. We didn’t do particularly well.

Pelicans’ Trey Murphy III to sign shoe endorsement deal with Nike

Murphy becomes the latest rookie to sign with Nike, joining Cade Cunningham, Scottie Barnes and Jonathan Kuminga among others.

New Orleans Pelicans rookie Trey Murphy III will apparently sign a multiyear shoe and apparel endorsement contract with Nike, he announced this week on Twitter.

Murphy becomes the latest rookie to sign with Nike this year, joining Cade Cunningham, Scottie Barnes and Jonathan Kuminga among others. They join a star-studded roster of athletes, including LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving.

The crop of rookie players this year are expected to help Nike usher in their new Greater Than series, wearing player-exclusive models such as the GT Cut, GT Run and GT Jump.

It is estimated that 68% of NBA players wear Nike on the court.

The 17th overall pick is off to a hot start with the Pelicans in the preseason. He is averaging 20.5 points and six rebounds on a blistering 63.2% shooting (12-of-19) from 3-point range through two games. His 12 3s lead all players so far this preseason.

Pelicans’ Trey Murphy III knows his scouting report will soon change

Murphy leads all NBA players in 3-pointers through the first two games of the preseason.

Trey Murphy III knocked down six more 3-pointers on Wednesday to lead the New Orleans Pelicans to a 104-86 victory over the Orlando Magic, continuing a hot start to his preseason run.

Murphy finished the contest with 20 points, six rebounds and one assist in 29 minutes of work as the Pelicans improved to 1-1 this preseason. He converted on 7-of-13 shot attempts from the field, including 6-of-9 from beyond the arc.

The 17th overall pick went 6-of-10 from 3-point range during the Pelicans’ preseason opener on Monday, and is now shooting 12-of-19 through his first two games. Though it is a small sample size, Murphy leads all players in 3s made.

He attributes his hot start to the work he has put in and his confidence.

I’m shooting open shots and I can shoot the ball pretty well, I can’t lie to you. I’m going to keep shooting it. They are going in and I’m staying confident. That is the main thing for me.

The Pelicans value his floor spacing as it will help create opportunities for other players. They are playing without Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram during the preseason but they figure to benefit by the added floor spacing once they can return.

Murphy knows teams likely won’t continue to leave him open from the perimeter. He will have to adjust his game to continue to get shots but is going to let it fly every time he is open.

In all honesty, I could go 0-for-20 and I’m still shooting that next one. It’s nice putting the ball in the basket, for sure. I think my scouting report is going to be a little different than I expected in Game 1 so I just gotta be prepared for that.

While Murphy has proven to be a very good shooter, the 6-foot-8 forward can do more than just that. He threw down a dunk versus the Magic and also had a nice drive to basket, in which he needed to weave around a couple of defenders.

He will be looking to showcase more of that in the future.

It has been a minute since I got a dunk, it is crazy. I promise you, I have a lot of athleticism, too. I smoked a layup first so that was one of the problems but then I got the rebound. I’m just trying to channel my inner Zion, I guess.

Murphy gives the Pelicans a great floor-spacing option, something that has been on full display this week. Whether it’s in the starting lineup or off the bench, Murphy could be in store for a strong rookie campaign as a 3-and-D option.

Pelicans’ Trey Murphy III was automatic from deep in preseason opener

Murphy drained six 3-pointers on Monday as the Pelicans lost to the Timberwolves in their preseason opener.

New Orleans Pelicans head coach Willie Green last week commended rookie Trey Murphy III for the way he has shot during training camp. On Monday, Murphy seemingly carried that momentum into the first game of the preseason.

Murphy registered 21 points and six rebounds in 30 minutes of action during a 117-114 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves. He converted on 6-of-10 shot attempts from 3-point range, and hit four alone in the fourth quarter as the Pelicans attempted to come back from a 17-point deficit.

The effort by Murphy earned some praise from Green afterward.

“He looked good,” Green said. “He was a little uncomfortable in the first half but he got it going in the second half and knocked down shots. His teammates were looking for him and that’s what we need him to do. He is a floor spacer. He knows how to play. He was in the right spots the majority of the time in the second half and I liked what I saw from him.”

With Zion Williamson recovering from offseason foot surgery, the Pelicans will be looking at their options when replacing him in the starting lineup. The team is considering Murphy in that spot, and his performance on Monday certainly helped his chances.

Murphy gives the Pelicans a great floor-spacing option, something that was on full display in his debut game. Whether it’s in the starting lineup or off the bench, Murphy could be in store for a strong rookie campaign as a 3-and-D option.
