2 Cardinals players snubbed as Pro Bowl alternates

Budda Baker made the Pro Bowl but Trey McBride and Matt Prater weren’t even Pro Bowl alternates.

The NFL announced the AFC and NFC rosters for the 2024 Pro Bowl Games and one Arizona Cardinals player, safety Budda Baker, made the squad.

It was the sixth time he has made the Pro Bowl and the fifth season in a row.

It is no surprise that Baker is the only player to make the Pro Bowl.

What is surprising is that they had zero alternates.

The Cardinals always announce Pro Bowl selections and Pro Bowl alternates, so the lack of an announcement indicates that they did not have any this year.

Two Cardinals warranted consideration as possible alternates — tight end Trey McBride and kicker Matt Prater.

TE Trey McBride is lone Cardinal in top 10 in fan voting for Pro Bowl

McBride finished 10th in fan voting among tight ends for the Pro Bowl.

The NFL announced its rosters for the 2024 Pro Bowl Games. The Arizona Cardinals have a singular representative — safety Budda Baker, selected to the Pro Bowl for the fifth straight year as a starter and for the sixth time in his career.

He was selected because of the respect he has from coaches and players around the league. In past years, he has also been among the top votegetters at his position.

That was not the case this year.

Only one Cardinals player cracked the top 10 at his position and that is tight end Trey McBride.

He finished in 10th place among tight ends in fan voting.

Fan voting comes down to two things usually. One is how popular or good the player’s team is and the other is fantasy impact.

McBride’s statistical surge over the last several weeks has not gone unnoticed by fans.

His rising popularity combined with steady production to finish the year and hopefully into next season can hopefully propel him to more recognition in the future.

He had three receptions for 61 yards in the first quarter against the San Francisco 49ers but exited the game in the second quarter.

He was taken to the locker room and it was announced he was questionable to return with a shoulder injury.

The Cardinals trailed the 49ers 14-10 at that point.

Trey McBride sets new single-season record vs. 49ers

His catch on the second play of the game gave him 57 on the season, the most by a tight end in a season in franchise history.

Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride is already having one of the best seasons a tight end has had in franchise history. After tying the franchise’s single-season record for receptions by a tight end with 56.

It didn’t take long to set the record against the 49ers.

He caught an 11-yard pass from Kyler Murray on the second play from scrimmage, giving him 57 on the season. He added a 38-yard catch on the possession before Arizona took a 7-0 lead on a James Conner two-yard touchdown.

McBride, who started the season with only eight receptions in the first five weeks, has emerged as a budding star.

He will continue to set a record with every catch he makes the rest of the season. He entered the game with 610 receiving yards. Only one player — Hall of Famer Jackie Smith — had more receiving yards in a season.

McBride, if he reaches 811 yards, will have the second-highest single-season total by a tight end. Smith’s 1,205 receiving yards is the highest total by a tight end in franchise history.

TE Trey McBride cracks top 10 in Pro Bowl voting at his position

McBride is the only Cardinals player in the top 10 vote-getters at any position for the Pro Bowl.

Last week, with the first revealing of Pro Bowl fan voting results, not a single Arizona Cardinals player was found in the top 10 of their positions. No Budda Baker, no James Conner.

That changed this week, according to Darren Urban for the Cardinals’ official team site.

Second-year tight end Trey McBride made it into the top-10 fan vote-getters at tight end, coming in at No. 8 this week.

Unsurprisingly, the two tight ends with the most fan votes are the 49ers’ George Kittle and the Chiefs’ Travis Kelce.

McBride is having one of the best receiving seasons for a tight end in franchise history. With 56 receptions for 610 receiving yards, he has tied the franchise single-season record for receptions by a tight end and has the seventh-highest single-season yardage total by a tight end. Only Hall of Famer Jackie Smith has had more receiving yards in a season, and the Cardinals still have four games remaining.

Every reception McBride has will set a new franchisee record this season. With 201 yards over the final four games, he would have the second-most receiving yards.

Pro Bowl fan voting is still going on.

Trey McBride is having one of Cardinals’ best seasons ever for a tight end

Every catch he makes will set a new single-season franchise record for tight ends and he should finish with the second-highest total in yards.

The Arizona Cardinals have been searching for a very good tight end for a long time. Over the last decade or so, they thought they had them in players like Rob Housler, Troy Niklas, Ricky Seals-Jones, Dan Arnold and more.

They have gone the older veteran route with Todd Heap, Jeff Carlson, Charles Clay and Zach Ertz.

But it appears that they finally have found their guy in Trey McBride.

By the end of this season, he will have had one of the best tight end seasons in franchise history.

McBride has 56 receptions for 610 yards. He already has tied the single-season franchise record for receptions by a tight end. Every catch he has over the final four games of the season will set a new record.

With 610 receiving yards, only one tight end in franchise history has had more in a season. Hall of Famer Jackie Smith has the six highest single-season totals for receiving yards by a tight end. His highest total was 1,205 yards in 1967.

McBride, though, if he stays healthy, will likely end up with the second-highest yardage total.

Smith’s second-best season was 810 receiving yards. With 201 yards over the final four games, McBride will surpass that.

Only in his second season, the Cardinals appear to have a player they will want to keep on the team for years to come.

Trey McBride ties record in win over Steelers

McBride’s eight catches on Sunday gives him 56 on the season, tied for the most in a season by any Cardinals tight end.

The Arizona Cardinals surprised the league with a 24-10 road win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. It was their first road win of the season and first since Week 10 of last season.

In the win, tight end Trey McBride tied a single-season franchise record.

He tied the franchise’s single-season record for receptions by a tight end.

He had eight receptions for 89 yards and a touchdown, giving him a total of 56 receptions for 610 yards on the season.

The 56 catches match Zach Ertz’s 56 catches in 2021 and Jackie Smith’s 56 in 1967.

His 610 yards are the most by a tight end since Smith had 687 in 1970. He is only the third Cardinals tight end to have 600 receiving yards in a season.

The passing game went through McBride on Sunday. There were only 13 catches by the Cardinals as a team. He had eight of them.

With seven games to go, he will set a new single-season record with every catch he has.

The single-season record for receiving yards by a tight end is 1,205, set by Smith in 1967. He needs 595 yards in the final seven games to tie that record.
